Summary
Motion, the Fourth Dimension of Design
Nothing new, everything new.
Motion, in its expressive dimension, is born from the melding of digital formats
and the physical, tangible world.
Frame, the Amsterdam magazine that carefully explores this side of design,
coined the term 'Phygital '.
Robert Thiemann, editor and director, said : "In our industry you see a constantly
increasing degree of cross-pollination between digital services and physical
objects, and the impact on product and spatial design is significant."
This edition of the design week installations has highlighted the tendency Phygital
with new product concepts and reflections on materials and their processing.

Summary
Motion, the Fourth Dimension of Design
This can be seen in environments where it was difficult to navigate and where the
illusion of infinite was given by mirrors – a surprising effect with the feel of a 3D movie.
In other situations, the relationship with objects was not limited to observation,
but imposed a physical action and contact, to cross the outer fringes of the surface
and cross borders to discover another world contained within them. The level of
engagement is rising: we are not just spectators, we are all a part protagonist.

Summary
Motion, the Fourth Dimension of Design
And then there's time: there is no way to live the movement without a
temporal narrative. Lights, colors and materials invite us to stop, reflect
and discover transformations.
Sometimes the changes are rapid, fleeting, like the colored reflections of light,
others are as slow as oxidizing metals, or aging wood. But they are always
magical and surprising.
The acquired shape takes on a higher dimension and expresses
the transformation:
as the freeze-frame of a video that alludes to a before and after.
The physical image of an instant in time.

Summary
Volumes and Voids
Volumes and Voids is a pair of languages that tell of the desire for balance and
freedom of expression.
There is no primacy bet ween the two.
We interpreted this contemporary exhibition of contrasting styles as a creative
wealth and a prelude to a search for the new in all directions.
The lightness of lines and absence of the material lets us imagine spaces,
shapes, and objects: freedom and fantasy abound.
Solid materials, heavy and dense, amaze us for their formal dynamism;
even here, unexpectedly, movement finds its own dimension.

Summary
Stories of colors, never color
We know that the colors are endless. Instead, what is much smaller is the set
of 'names' to describe color.
And even fewer are the ways in which we can refer the chromatic harmonies
without falling into doubt.
But we will have to coin new and significant terms, because as we have known
for some years that which makes a color interesting and innovative is the
creation of a new identity, an interesting harmony that exalts it, a theme that
put it in the foreground.
Season after season, a significant number of wonderful and rich palettes and
harmonies alternate and conquer the primacy of color trends.
This year, for the first time, Pantone presented the color of the year 2016 in
the form of a smooth gradient from Rose Quartz to Serenity Blue:
not a color but an emotional story.
Colours describe environments and styles, they tell stories.

Milan Design Week 2016: Motion, Phygital Design and the Fourth Dimension

  • 1. © DESIGN GROUP ITALIA DGI OPINION MILAN DESIGN WEEK 2016 © DESIGN GROUP ITALIA Time is time” installation, Citizen, photo credits@simona.sagripanti
  • 2. © DESIGN GROUP ITALIA Summary Motion, the Fourth Dimension of Design Nothing new, everything new. Motion, in its expressive dimension, is born from the melding of digital formats and the physical, tangible world. Frame, the Amsterdam magazine that carefully explores this side of design, coined the term 'Phygital '. Robert Thiemann, editor and director, said : "In our industry you see a constantly increasing degree of cross-pollination between digital services and physical objects, and the impact on product and spatial design is significant." This edition of the design week installations has highlighted the tendency Phygital with new product concepts and reflections on materials and their processing. • 3. © DESIGN GROUP ITALIA Summary Motion, the Fourth Dimension of Design This can be seen in environments where it was difficult to navigate and where the illusion of infinite was given by mirrors – a surprising effect with the feel of a 3D movie. In other situations, the relationship with objects was not limited to observation, but imposed a physical action and contact, to cross the outer fringes of the surface and cross borders to discover another world contained within them. The level of engagement is rising: we are not just spectators, we are all a part protagonist. © DESIGN GROUP ITALIA COS x Sou Fujimoto installation, photo credits@riccardo.dubitante
  • 4. © DESIGN GROUP ITALIA Summary Motion, the Fourth Dimension of Design And then there's time: there is no way to live the movement without a temporal narrative. Lights, colors and materials invite us to stop, reflect and discover transformations. Sometimes the changes are rapid, fleeting, like the colored reflections of light, others are as slow as oxidizing metals, or aging wood. But they are always magical and surprising. The acquired shape takes on a higher dimension and expresses the transformation: as the freeze-frame of a video that alludes to a before and after. The physical image of an instant in time. • 13. © DESIGN GROUP ITALIA Summary Volumes and Voids Volumes and Voids is a pair of languages that tell of the desire for balance and freedom of expression. There is no primacy bet ween the two. We interpreted this contemporary exhibition of contrasting styles as a creative wealth and a prelude to a search for the new in all directions. The lightness of lines and absence of the material lets us imagine spaces, shapes, and objects: freedom and fantasy abound. Solid materials, heavy and dense, amaze us for their formal dynamism; even here, unexpectedly, movement finds its own dimension. © DESIGN GROUP ITALIA ALBUM "a collection of 10 photos“, SET Architects for Florim Ceramiche, photo credits@Simone Bossi

  • 16. © DESIGN GROUP ITALIA© DESIGN GROUP ITALIA Summary Stories of colors, never color We know that the colors are endless. Instead, what is much smaller is the set of 'names' to describe color. And even fewer are the ways in which we can refer the chromatic harmonies without falling into doubt. But we will have to coin new and significant terms, because as we have known for some years that which makes a color interesting and innovative is the creation of a new identity, an interesting harmony that exalts it, a theme that put it in the foreground. Season after season, a significant number of wonderful and rich palettes and harmonies alternate and conquer the primacy of color trends. This year, for the first time, Pantone presented the color of the year 2016 in the form of a smooth gradient from Rose Quartz to Serenity Blue: not a color but an emotional story. Colours describe environments and styles, they tell stories. ROSE QUARTZ & SERENITY, PANTONE 13-1520 & PANTONE 15-3919
