Footloose Movie Analysis
Footloose "Tonight I gotta cut loose, footloose, kick off my sunday shoes. Jack, get back, come on
before we crack." (Footloose, Kenny Loggins) For this essay, I chose to watch Footloose made in
1984 and directed by Herbert Ross and Footloose made in 2011 directed by Craig Brewer. Both
movies centered around the town of Bomont, a secluded town with out of the ordinary beliefs. In
this town, dancing and partying of any sort was strictly against the law and teenagers were
seemingly miserable. There was little to no self expression and even listening to provocative music
or any music too loud, could get you a ticket with a hefty fine. The reason behind the strict rules is
that several years back, five teens from Bomont High School died in a car wreck after they were
drinking and dancing too much. Each of these movies have some things in common, but have more
differences than anything. Some of the main differences are the opening credits of each movie, how
and who Ren arrives to Bomont at the beginning of the movie, the "chicken" races between Ren and
Jeff, and the book burning in town square. In the 1984 version, the movie opens with the song
"Footloose" and the first thing the viewers see is the shoes and feet of many different people
dancing. One of the major things that you notice is the type and style of the shoes such as leg
warmers and socks with heels which tells you what era the movie was made in. As the credits roll
across the screen, the music continues to

Essay On Melinda's Life
In the start of the novel, Melinda's life is completely frozen. She struggles in school, fights with her
parents, and most importantly, doesn't open up to anyone about her feelings. As the novel extends to
the middle point, Melinda slowly begins to thaw. Not only does she start to unfreeze, she begins to
open up to specific and important people in her life. Opening up allows her to feel true happiness
and trust. FInally, as the book starts to make way towards the ending, Melinda is starting to fully
unveil and open up to important people in her life. The author is explaining that if the character
thaws out instead of holding it all in, the character's life will become much better. Melinda will have
people by her side for the next tough situation that heads her way. ... Show more content on

She struggles in school, fights with her parents, and most importantly, doesn't open up to anyone
about her feelings. The protagonist doesn't know how to express her feelings to others, so she
expresses them differently. "I bite my lips... they bleed." (Anderson 5) Also, Melinda believes
expressing feelings makes it worse and that things are better left unsaid. The story stated, "It is
easier not to say anything. Shut your trap, button your lip, can it. All that crap on TV about
communication and expressing feelings is a lie. (Anderson 9) "I knew you were trouble the first
time I saw you. I've taught here for twenty–four years and I can tell what's going on in a kid's head
just by looking in their eyes... You just earned yourself a demerit."
(Anderson 9) This quote is explaining how in the novel, Melinda continuously ignores authority and
her parents. In conclusion, throughout the start of the novel, Melinda's life is completely frozen. She

Narrative and Genre Features in the Opening Sequence of Pulp Fiction
A narrative is the story itself and generic features are elements expected to be contained within a
certain category of film.
Pulp Fiction is labeled as a gangster film; however gangster films follow very precise generic
elements such a death, contraband's, violence, wealth and strong family loyalties.
Pulp Fiction doe follow the above mentioned elements but the locations of the action are
unorthodox. Screen gangster activities tend to take place in sophisticated up market places as
gangsters tend to be perceived as sophisticated and highly respected and feared individuals in
society. This is a generic convention which is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However these two sit and weigh up the pro's and con's before they engage in the activity. The male

'.... no–body ever robs restaurants'
This illustrates they are breaking conventions.
In a traditional narrative we expect to see characters that have prominent roles in the film to be in
the opening sequence; also you'd expect the story contained in the opening sequence to be followed
up. This is not the case in Pulp Fiction. We leave the opening scene in a moment of action.
Therefore we are set up with the expectation of what happens next? In a traditional linear narrative
this is a question which is likely to be answered. However in Pulp Fiction the next scene contains
different characters and a different plot. We do not return to the opening story till the end of the film.
The next scene contains the opening credits. The music is upbeat and compliments the emotional
intensity of the two thieves' situation. The music also suggests we are still with the two thieves'
story.
In the middle of the title track we hear a radio changing dial and a new track plays 'Jungle Boogie.'
This suggests unpredictability. This is also a subversion of traditions in itself as it doesn't happen in
any other film.
We enter the next scene mid–way into a conversation. We do not know of they're related to the
couple in the restaurant. A

The Descent Grade a
The film the descent uses a range of shots, sound, editing and symbolisation to create an ominous
atmosphere; in effect this makes the horror aspect in the film really stand out as it leaves the viewer
deciding what happens in specific parts of the film, which all ties in with the films ending.
This all makes the film very subjective and leaves much of the opening scenes open to interpretation
which is very enticing for a horror movie.
The films opening sequence contains many things which symbolise the events in the movie and
starts to define what genre the movie is, because the music is fairly ambient and deep suggesting
danger which implies it's a horror or a thriller movie. When the opening credits appear light effects

Also in the final scene Sarah leaves Juno for dead to get revenge on what she did to Beth which also
shows how what they are wearing indicates the loyalty aspect of their relationship. This subtle
costume difference is very clever because even at the very start of the film characters are already
being divided and given a specific role in the film to play.
Throughout the whole boating scene there are many different shots, edits, sounds and effects which
make the whole scene upbeat and adventurous. A shot type which does this is the aerial (bird's eye)
view which in effect presents the tight squeezes in the waterfalls and the sheer size of the waterfall
that they in. Also the edits in this scene are very fast keeping everything upbeat and to show how
Sarah, Beth and Juno would be seeing things. These edits are also giving a very clear representation
of white water rafting as a sport on a whole and that it is generally a very courageous, brave,
adventurous thing to do. Through out the scene we see several shots of the little girl as if its Sarah's
point of view and she is looking at her keeping most of her attention on her showing that Sarah and
her have a very strong emotional bond and yet again that the film is going to be a very female
orientated film. There is one effect which is used in the

The Opening Sequences of David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron's Film Version of Great Expectations
In this media assignment I shall be analyzing and comparing the similarities and differences of two
famous directors' film versions of 'Great Expectations'. The two directors are David Lean and
Alfonso Cuaron. David Lean's version was more popular and well known than Alfonso Cuaron's
because Lean was the first director to actually direct 'Great Expectations'. This made it more
difficult for Alfonso Cuaron because he had to bring the film up to date by making the film more
modern and there have also been 10 other films based on the novel 'Great Expectations'. David Lean
had directed his version of 'Great ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is revealing to the audience that the film fits into the horror genre and is giving the audience
clues about what the film will include, such as an ominous atmosphere and scenes of violence and
gore. Lean has created this mood and theme so that the audience would want to know what the film
actually contains, whether it is horror or drama.
David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron are using the different techniques to keep the audience interested in
the movie. The soundtrack of both versions is different because Alfonso Cuaron has played music
throughout his opening frames. He has introduced sound effects such as waves that give the
audience a pleasant sound to their ears; this same effect is employed with seagulls. The music that is
actually played has a joyful and happy mood, which encourages the audience to think that the film is
a non–violent film. But when Magwitch appears from underneath the water in the tenth frame and
grabs Pip, at this point the music changes from joyful and happy to dramatic and shocking. Cuaron
deliberately did this to shock and alarm the audience from a happy and cheerful atmosphere to an
explicit and up–tempo atmosphere, this technique also keeps you interested in the film.
On the other hand David Lean has only played music in his opening

Descriptive Essay On An Abandoned House
A group of friends walked up to an old, seemingly abandoned house. They couldn't see inside
because of the dirt and cobwebs on the windows. When they turned the doorknob to see if it was
locked, the door creaked open as if it has been closed for years. Me and my friends , Hayden ,Annie
,Kacy , and Rush were walking up old stairs to this abandoned house . As we walk in the house the
door shut Annie screamed and I told her to ,''shut up ,'' we all didn't think about the door closing on
its on except Annie . So we keep walking around to see if there is light willed Annie keeps yapping
about the door. As we were walking around to see if there was light , we did not proceed that we
were in a abound house so the light will not work because no one lives here so no one could pay the
bills . So we looked in Rush's bag to get the flashlights . As we walk around Kacy started to joke
around like what if we die , or what if theres ghost ,or what if we get trap here , so that made Annie
really scared . kacy loves to try to scarier use but it doesn't work expect Annie . So we went upstairs
into a room that look like someone had redone the house and the room and the lights work we were
lowkey kinda scared . So we walk into the the room we were look around until the door slammed
we all jump , then we heard something fall from the ceiling so we turn around to see a old doll that
was cracked and it was creepy looking , waller lying down on the ground . So we ran to the door

Personal Narrative: My Decision To Close The Tualatin Haggen
I am incredibly disappointed in the decision to close the Tualatin Haggen which has been a part of
the Tualatin community for many years. Our Haggen has been around for my entire life and I
always feel at home when I go there; a feeling I believe I share with many of its other customers.
I'm friends with many of the employees and am incredibly saddened to hear that almost all of them
will have no place to work after the store closes. The people who work there are some of the kindest
and hardest working people I have ever met and deserve to have a feeling of security knowing
where their next paycheck is coming from. If the Tualatin Haggen does indeed close I hope there is
some way to allow the 73 people who work at the store to find new jobs within your company. ...

It's a place where people feel happy and are always surrounded by employees who care. It's a
friendly environment that's hard to find at other stores these days. There are many families I have
talked to who have no idea where they are going to shop after the store has closed. Additionally, it
seems impractical to close the store before the lease is up. There will be an empty grocery store in
the heart of our town causing our economy to suffer drastically. If the lease was up, a new company
could buy the location and add a new store to our community, but, instead, the building will now sit
there until the lease is up. Also, it is unfair to refuse to restock the store. It is unfair to the employees
who might be out of a job weeks before you told them they would. Being out of a job sooner than
expected can be detrimental to many of the employee's lives, especially those with families to
support. Lastly, it is unfair to the customers who wish to enjoy Haggen until the closing date on

Analysis Of Shakespeare In Love
The film Shakespeare in Love is a wonderful movie directed by John Madden. The film seems
pretty straightforward at the beginning, but there are subtle things that make the film more enticing.
John Madden added these things to make the film look and feel more real. I will be discussing more
about this film white discussing its impact on myself and the audience.
This film was set during 1590`s and that is a very important fact that must be remembered while
reviewing, especially when thinking of Madden's vision of the film while directing. In the opening
sequence, we see the director using subtle hints that help set the tone of the film. The opening
credits are in black and white and because of this, we know that the film is set in an early time
period. This, as well as the font, is what we would associate with old England. Although this was an
interesting effect used to create the setting, the opening sequence as a whole, was extremely boring.
Even though it was boring, the music was there to fill the gap and not leave the audience lulled to
sleep. The instruments chosen and the frequent melodic tones helped further shape the setting of old
England. It is obvious that Madden loved music because it is almost omni–present throughout the
film. The instruments are mostly string instruments which are often accredited to classical music.
The pitch, the tempo, and the loudness of the music play major roles along with the selection of
instruments. If there is an important part of

Falling Down Sequence
The opening sequence in the film "Falling Down" portrays how everyday activities can take a turn
for the worst. It begins with the main character William Foster stuck in a traffic jam on the highway
caused by construction. The first shot that opens the scene is an extreme close up of Foster's face,
which allows the audience to see him in great detail. We see by his heavy breathing and sweat
dripping down his face that he is in a hot environment. The camera starts to zoom out and go into a
tracking shot, which allows us to see the environment that surrounds him. This is also an
establishing shot. The car directly in front of Foster has a young girl starring out the back window
towards him. There is a school bus two lanes over to his right that ... Show more content on

As the scene progresses, you see how each event is causing Foster's temper to rise and his patience
to grow thinner. Foster constantly plays with his AC unit, which is broken, reinforcing that the
temperature outside is hot. Another factor adding to his frustration is the fly stuck in his car. It is
buzzing around him and repeatedly landing on his neck causing him to keep swatting at it. The
usage of quick cuts gives the impression of tension building up for the character throughout the
scene. This gives off the impression that something worse is constantly happening to Foster and he
is unable to escape his uncomfortable reality. The AC breaking, window roller broken, kids
screaming, cars honking and the heat wave itself are all shown so quickly so that the viewer is
seeing that everything is being thrown at Foster at once and that he is starting to feel very
claustrophobic and cannot seem to escape it. When everything hits its peak he decides to quickly get
out of his vehicle, which serves as his escape as the music and sounds subside to a normal level and
he is now calmer and decides to just walk home

Why The Pandorca Opens?
"The Pandorica Opens" is an episode where the Doctor finds out about a painting of his spaceship
that blows up. The painting contains coordinates of a time and place. The coordinates lead to the
Stonehenge in 2 A.D. The romans play a part as the Doctor's protectors against the aliens who want
the Pandorica for themselves. The Pandorica sounds similar to Pandora's Box, which the character
Amy Pond references. She turns out to be correct as the Pandorica is Pandora's Box, but in modern
time. It was a myth made real. One of the multiple messages in this episode is that united you can

Evaluation of the Opening Scenes of an Episode of the X–Files
The opening sequence of the 'X–Files' episode 'Tooms' uses a variety of techniques to capture the
attention of the audience.
The 'X–Files' is a very popular television series written by Chris Carter. The series can be described
as a 'hybrid' genre because it reflects a number of different genres. The obvious genre is Science
Fiction because one of the main themes of the series is the paranormal. However there are strong
elements of the Mystery/Detective genre as the two main characters, which are FBI investigators,
seek to find the truth of the paranormal. There is also a Horror/Gothic element to the series because

The affect of this is that the man seems vulnerable, and raises the audience's suspicion of what is
going to happen to him.
There is then a tracking shot of the man inter–cut with a close up of a roadside drain, where the
creature 'Tooms' is lurking. When focused on the drain, the camera slowly zooms in. when the
camera cuts back to the man; it is a low angle tracking shot. This low angle shot gives the
impression to the audience that they are looking through the eyes of whatever is in the drain. This
gives the scene a sinister and foreboding atmosphere.
This is emphasised when the camera zooms in of the businessman in a low angle shot and gradually
becomes slow motion. The entire colour is then drained out of the frame except for the man. This
emphasises the earlier point, and suggests the creature in the drain is focusing all his attention and
malice on the man. At this point there is a section of music that sounds computer generated, almost
alien. This adds to the malice of the creature and is repeated throughout the opening scene when
there is evidence that the creature in the drain is near.
This shot is then followed by a close up of the drain, showing two strange pale eyes. This maintains
the audiences attention because it makes them want to discover what is in the drain and why it is
there.
The camera then cuts to a shot of a

Opening Scene In Arrival
The first scene of Arrival is a montage of a child's life and early death. This montage is suggested to
be a flashback that our protagonist experiences before the events of the film. However, this
introductory scene actually encourages the formation of a false hypothesis, since the montage is
actually of the future, not the past. The primacy effect ensures that this hypothesis will be accepted
as fact until an overwhelming amount of information is presented by the narration to overturn it.
Over the course of the film, the narration does present overwhelming information, however it does

Louise's visions are always shown, but her own thoughts on the visions are not revealed until near
the end of the movie. Since her thoughts on the visions are not stated until the very end of the
movie, it is difficult to tell exactly what the visions are of, but, every vision releases some clues. For
example, in the visions that feature Louise and baby Hannah or young girl Hannah, Louise is always
wearing a wedding ring, whereas in reality she is not. In one vision, Hannah has made a Heptapod
out of clay, which would obviously not be possible if the vision were a flashback. Also, almost
every vision starts as Louise is studying the Heptapod's written language. It seems to be an odd
coincidence at first, but slowly it becomes clear that the language is what triggers the visions. On
top of that, the idea that language can affect the way an individual thinks and perceives time is
introduced very early in the film, and reiterated several times. This is another clue the narration
offers that the Heptapod language itself may be the cause of Louise's visions. The narration drops all
these clues as to what the visions really are, but it is not until the very end of the film where they

In this essay I will be comparing the opening sequences of 'The Italian Job (1969) and its modern–

famous actors such as Michael Caine. It was a huge success and gained a massive cult following.
The remake in 2003 was directed by Gary Gray and stared Mark Wahlberg and Seth Green. Again
this was a huge success and introduced the film to a new generation. The opening sequence is a very

ideas on this person's personality as he has been in jail.
In the 2003 version the action is quite different; as the credits are rolling, fast paced orchestral music

The music builds up to a climax before stopping and going into the movie. A man in his mid sixties

such as the gondolas and Rialto Bridge. He meets up with work colleagues and they begin to initiate
their plan. All of this creates a sense of anticipation, you are expecting something to happen shortly.

Stylistic Devices In The Opening Ceremony
Another tendency noted in the British newspapers is the frequent use of stylistic devices such as
oxymoron, antithesis or paradoxes, in order to describe the opening ceremony and Britain. Most of
them were retrieved from The Guardian, but they were present in all the newspapers:
The latter sentence suggests that the opening ceremony, and by extension the country itself, tends to
be described as a contradictory entity. This tendency is confirmed above all in The Guardian and in
The Times. As far as the adjectives are concerned, one can see that The Guardian is more objective
than The Independent, which only showcased Britain and the opening ceremony under a very
positive light. However, a majority of positive qualifications were used, and Matthew Caines, from
The Guardian, pointed out that the newspaper was "pretty much all out of adjectives" to describe the
spectacle.

Reaction to Boyle's Socialist Vision of the United Kingdom
Whereas the majority of the audience praised the opening ceremony, some did not agree with the

that was used in all of the newspapers that have been analysed is the word "leftie".
That controversy ensued from a series of tweets posted by the British Conservative Member of
Parliament for Cannock Chase, Aidan Burley, on July 27, 2012, during the London 2012 opening
ceremony. The MP fiercely denounced the social and multicultural aspect depicted in the spectacle,
labelling it "leftie, multicultural crap". The actual tweets were:

Comparison Between The Others and The Sixth Sense Essay

The blockbuster movies 'The Sixth Sense' and 'The Others' are two of the best examples of
supernatural thrillers you will ever see. Both storylines are gripping and compelling and there are
many unsuspected twists and turns along the way.
'The Sixth Sense' and 'The Others' have comparable storylines because they are both based on the

From the opening credits, with their white–on–black minimalism and the stealthy, suggestive music,
it's clear that 'The Sixth Sense' is going to have you on the edge of your seat the whole way through.
The black of the background symbolises darkness and the feeling of unawareness and the
contrasting glowing white writing stands out against it. As the scrolling credits fade into the
background followed by shadows; it sets an eerie atmosphere, which prepares you for the rest of the
movie. The haunting music gets more intense as the credits roll on, which builds tension towards the

The opening credits in 'The Others' also create a similar ghostly setting as in 'The Sixth Sense'
although I feel that the credits in 'The Others' are more chilling and quite shocking. They start
relatively harmless, however we are still tense and edgy because we know there is irony behind this

images become more disturbing and terrifying. The gentle voice over is also ironic because it leaves

Example Of Endgame Theory
Opening Theory– this commonly refers to a consensus or a repertoire of common chess openings
that have been analyzed line per line and are proven to be effective. Opening theory involves
multiple lines of one opening (Hooper and Whyld, 1992).
Middlegame Theory– often refers to maxims or principles applicable to the middlegame. There are
few universally applicable principles (Hooper and Whyld, 1992).
Endgame Theory– refers to the maxims or principles applicable to the endgame. Endgame theory
involves the review of passed games and application of concepts obtained from reviewing these
games into similar positions (Hooper and Whyld, 1992).

A clear thought process is described in the book, an ideal thought process for developing calculating
skills and the creation of an analysis tree. It is also discussed that in every game there is always one
"critical position" in which the slightest edge in accurate calculation can change the flow of a game
(Gormally, 2010).
Modern Chess Openings: 13th Edition The third part of chess theory is the opening theory. Opening
theory is mostly concerned with memorizing lines to see which openings can give you a slight edge
in the beginning. Though memorizing specific openings is favorable, there are also chess principles
that can guide a player to find moves that can give them an edge in an equal matchup (Firman,
2013).
Creating a Chess engine from Scratch A chess engine is a basic tool in improving chess skills when
you reach a higher level of playing. Chess engines assist you in analyzing certain positions to allow

The syuzhet reveals definitively that the opening sequence was a vision of the future rather than a
flashback. The first time the narration offers a little depth of knowledge of Louise is when she asks
Costello "Who is this child?". That is the exact moment the plot reveals with absolute certainty that
the visions are not flashbacks. This is the first time Louise comments on her visions, unleashing the
slightest bit of depth of knowledge on her character. Costello immediately responds: "Louise sees
future." Now the gaps begin to fill themselves quickly. Louise tries to explain to Weber that the
weapon the heptapods are trying to give humanity is their language, which causes whoever learns it
to begin to perceive time nonlinearly. Louise also begins to control these visions so she can receive

Francis and Mary finally got to see each other after some many years has passed. They had been

on the tone went from optimistic to negative. Nostradamus's visions were to the point where he
predicted everything that would and should happen. Queen Catherine got very frustrated with his
visions and told him to leave French Court immediately. Ultimately, the tone of the show is what
brings the story, plot, and purpose altogether; it is also a very important factor when you're watching

The overall ratings of the show are what makes the audience want to watch it. If the show has a bad

I feel like having to ask her so many questions made Jane kind of uncomfortable. I think in this
situation, most patients would not open up, but rather shut down. I think that Jane could've stopped
answering the questions before, but thankfully she decided to open up instead.
Why is this therapy the best therapy for the disorder?
This is the best therapy for depression because patients need to feel like they are safe and able to
talk about their problems. In a closed environment, they will probably feel more comfortable
opening up about what is on their mind. I think a lot of people with depression believe they are
insignificant, or that no one cares about them, but having a person they can always rely on and talk
to will definitely change their minds about that. Their therapist will also be able to give them advice
about their situations, so they don't stay in their bad situations. With any other type of therapy, the
patient would not have these types of opportunities to talk.
How do you feel this type of therapy could be improved or more effective?
I think this therapy could be more effective if the therapist already knew why they were talking to
the patient. Perhaps they could have the patient fill out a questionnaire so the therapist has a better
idea of what is going on in their lives. I think it would also be helpful if the therapist got to know the
patient before they asked them about their problems.

Impromptu Research Paper
Have you ever been tapped to make an impromptu group presentation with a half hour's notice?
When is the last time someone asked you for a "brief update" on the status of an upcoming project
in "about an hour"?
Did you ever stand up in the heat of a membership meeting where negativity prevailed and asked
members to consider a more positive stance on an issue?
These scenarios require you to "think on your feet" – give an impromptu speech – if you do not
want to embarrass yourself, and want to demonstrate your knowledge and mental organization.
A well–prepared presentation is possible at the last minute. Be the envy of your organization and
become the go–to person with the strong communication skills by taking initiative and being willing

You can apply the same mantra to impromptu presentations. Sear the basic structure of a
presentation into your memory and volunteer to give speeches on the spot. The more you practice
giving impromptu presentations, the more comfortable you become doing so. Just as people trained
to respond to emergencies at a moment's notice, you will be able to respond with a solid
presentation at a moment's notice.
Consider the following key points as well as how to best communicate the content that is necessary
for the requested presentation.
Please With Threes
A lesson I teach early in my presentation skills workshops, and that I learned in school and in
Toastmasters clubs, is to "please with threes". Otherwise called the rule of threes, this means that
you create a presentation using a speech structure that consists of three main components: an
opening, a body, and a closing. Manage these three major parts of a presentation and your speech
will be organized every time.
Get Off on the Right Foot
Develop an attention–grabbing opening. On short notice, few people expect you to be witty or
humorous. Typically, last–minute presenters are expected to address a specific issue or concern.
Implement the following techniques, however, and you just might come across as witty and
instantly engaging in spite of your last–minute

Pretty Little Liars: Opening Credit Analysis
Reading a Media Text
Pretty Little Liars' Opening Credits
I have chosen to interpret, in both connotatively and denotatively ways, the opening credits to one of
ABC Family's most acclaimed TV show, Pretty Little Liars. It premiered in the early summer of
2010. Based on a teen/drama/mystery series, this show has rapidly gained success. When you watch
the opening credits for the first time without knowing anything about the show, it's easy to guess
what the show is about; but once you know or at least have a clue of the drama, it's easier to notice
the relationship between the introduction and the content. The introduction starts off with a girl,
getting ready for something; her nails, hair and makeup are being done. Then, ... Show more content

The girls standing behind the casket are a dressed in black because it's the correct attire for a
funeral, but they represent the "pretty" in the title of the show, meaning that they still keep their
style and sexiness at peak. Finally, the title of the show is placed over dark clouds symbolizing that
something bad has, or will happen. As state before, the theme song of the introduction is a song
called "Secret". This song and, more specifically its lyrics, link perfectly everything from the intro
to the drama and conflict of the show. The song has a kind of scary and mysterious melody. The
lyrics of the song say: "Got a secret, can you keep it, swear this one you'll save. Better lock it in
your pocket, taking this one to the grave ... and to can keep a secret if one of them is dead". The
lyrics of the song help the viewer analyze the intro and because of this they may come to the
conclusion that the four girls in the back of the casket may have something to do with the death of
the girl.
The girls' faces give the viewer a lot of information. Their facial expressions gives away the fact that
they are hiding something. Their posture, and the way they move implies that they have some sort of
secret they are trying not to give away. It can be implied that the four girls are hiding the same thing
and that that is what is keeping them close together. I remember the first time I saw the introduction,

Media Text Analysis
Identify some elements of the media text that are operating as signifiers and what their signifieds
are.
Firstly, the Fresh Meat opening titles begins with a notice which states that "All University housing
is strictly Non– Smoking." The prefix 'non' is crossed out and replaced with the "weed". This
linguistic sign of the word 'weed' can be signified as a slang term for marijuana, an illegal drug.
Next, the iconic signs of a bicycle helmet, bullet holes and wine shown. Following on from this is a
television set with an abstract green visual. This visual could be signified as similar to a computer
screensaver. A metallic toy robot is indicated which creates sparks.
Furthermore, the iconic signs of a pin board with photos of people attached to it are presented. The
linguistic sign of an actor's name then disappears through a hole in the wall.

This may connote a character who is a computer nerd. This characterisation may also be

Following on from McHigh's character is Kimberley Nixon's. Above Nixon's name is a photo frame

personality. The actor's name disappearing through the hole in the wall may suggest an imperfect
character with flaws. A hole in the wall may also enable communication between two rooms that are
separated by the wall.
The blue lights above Charlotte Ritchie's name may symbolise a mysterious character as this shade
of blue is sometimes seen this way. The mirror may indicate a character who is self–conscious. It
could be perceived by the audience that Josh Thomas' character enjoys listening or playing music.
The toiletries may also suggest that the character values looking after his appearance. The model

Establishing the difference between the story and the plot allows one to determine the effect each
element has on the understanding and interpretation of the piece. It also provides a way of tracking
the continuation of events and the relationship between seemingly isolated moments in time. Film
Art clearly defines both story and plot but acknowledges that there is a significant overlap between
the two functions and allows a flow within the film. The plot is the presentation of the events, in
chronological order and includes the events that are seen, inferred and assumed by the viewer as

The opening scene introduces us to the person we later learn is John 'Scottie' Ferguson, something
that does not play out until much later in the film relates to the demonstration of the debilitating
extent of Johns inability to act in the face of heights, once with the police officer and then with his
love whom he cant stop because of his fear. The opening scene builds on the credits by creating the
expectation of suspense and thrill and mystery shrouding the true identity and relation of characters
and setting up the disposableness of characters in the film, this adds to the complexity of Madeline's
disease as the audience cant tell whether, or more when, she will die.
The rooftop chase creates an expectation of dark drama, which moves into the scene with Midge in
a light filled room where Scottie appears to be in control of his fear and the relationship between the
two characters is established, whilst not technically part of the opening scene it instantly makes the
viewer question whether their interpretation of the initial segment of the film was correct, already
one is questioning their ability to pick the direction of the film.

The Use of Narrative in Film Essay
The Use of Narrative in Film
The use of Narrative in film and other forms of media is commonplace; it has become such that the
media viewer has not only come to expect it but rely on it somewhat. There are two elements in
narrative film today that combine in the engaging of the audience; 'story' and 'production' elements.
One example in the Australian film industry of the use of production and story elements in such a
way as to engage the audiences' attention is the film 'Two Hands'. The film Two Hands was directed
in 1999 by Gregor Jordan, a then virtual nobody. The film boasts an all–Australian cast and is full of
Australian humor and irony. It is a film that was loved by critics and the public alike and has been

The dialogue in this scene is the most helpful in terms of establishing the storylines and grabbing
the attention of the viewer. We learn that Jim owes Pando $10,000 for which he will soon be killed,
we learn that Jim will give Pando $15.000 if he lets him go ("I'm doing a job tomorrow. Let me go
and I'll give you 15"), we learn that Pando is willing to give Jim a chance by letting him try 013, and
that Pando really doesn't want to have to kill him but it seems like he has little choice ("sorry
Jimmy").
The next section of the opening sequence takes us back to what is seemingly the beginning of the
film, to the heart of King's Cross. Jim is standing out the front of a strip joint with a friend of his. It
seems the two are employed by the club to entice male passer–buyers into the club. Through their
dialogue the viewer can deduce that Jim intends on doing some work for someone name Pando, who
incidentally is someone 'you don't want to get mixed up with'. The viewer may also conclude that
Jim is unhappy with his current line of work and wishes to move up through the King's Cross
'hierarchy', so to speak, by doing this job.
During this scene Jim's relationship with Pando and Alex are established, or re–established in the
case of Pando. Jim's first impressions of Alex, an Alex's first impressions of Jim are evident through
the production elements involved. Through the use of cuts between and the

The Math Code: Numbers
In the film: "The Math Code: Numbers," we start out in a creepy setting that immediately pulls the
viewer in. Especially because this film is about numbers, the creepy settings gives the viewer a
different impression. Professor Marcus de Sautoy explains how numbers represent the entire
universe. In the film, viewers learn about many things. Marcus tells how numbers and ratios make

viewers how numbers are involved in music. The film focuses a lot on the math code, or Pi. In this
film, I learned many things. Some things were very interesting, and others were confusing. Overall,
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I found many things that were interesting in this film. Right from the
start I was pulled in. Marcus talked about the number 7, which is my favorite number. He said that
the number 7 represents the entire universe. He went on to explain that the number 10 is beyond the

I already knew a lot about stars, but I still learned some cool things that I haven't heard before. I
found it interested that Marcus went to Switzerland Sphinx Observatory to watch the stars. I learned
that stars fall back to patterns, and patterns fall back to numbers. It was especially cool to find out
that a person can use the math code to find out where the stars will be positioned in the far future.
Overall, the section on stars, was my favorite part of this film. This film also leaves me with
multiple questions. If numbers can predict multiple things, why are so many things about the
universe left unanswered? Who discovered Pi, and why is it never ending? After watching this film,
I feel as if Pi is relevant to everything that surrounds us. If Pi is so important, why isn't it taught
more in schools? The film covered multiple areas, but leaves the viewer with unanswered

Opening Scenes Of Opening Scene
Part One: Opening and Closing Scenes
Significance of Opening Scene (Briefly describe the opening scene. Explain how it introduces the
themes of the novel.)
The introduction to the novel is presented in the form of letters from Robert Walton to his sister on
his expedition to the North Pole, and these letters present an idea of the loneliness and heartache that
he feels since he believes that he is all by himself without anyone to really talk to. These letters
reveal a sad opening tone that will continue to manifest itself throughout the novel.
Significance of Closing Scene (Briefly describe the closing scene. How does it resolve and/or
finalize the themes of the novel? How does it connect to or contrast with the opening scene?)
The closing scene also ends with letters from Walton, however they also reflect the ideas and themes
made in the opening scene. The ending closes with a general feeling of loneliness, as both
Frankenstein and the monster die after facing lives filled with despair and loss. Just as Walton felt
alone during his voyage at sea, Frankenstein felt alone after the deaths of his close family and
friends, and the monster felt alone because he lived a life of being rejected by all of society. The
opening scene foreshadows the overall tone of the novel which remains clearly present in the
closing.

The Room
The Room I was sleeping soundly in my new house. My mother and I recently moved out from our
old house after my parents got divorced. I loved our old house. I lived in there ever since I could
remember. All the memories still so clear. Like, under the big oak tree in our front yard where my
first dog named Daisy is buried. Or the treehouse in the backyard where I used to play with my
dolls, and read my favorite childhood book "Red light, green light." Which is also of the game me
and my friends down the road used to play on the paved driveway in my front yard that my
handprint is molded in. But anyway, back to the story. I was in my room sleeping soundly when all
of the sudden I heard a big crash downstairs. My eyelids popped open, I sat up quickly and spun my
head both ways. The room was black as pitch. The only light was the reflection of the moonlight
shining through the the window. I lifted my blanket and moved my legs off of the bed. I rubbed my
eyes with my hands as I stood up. It was still pitch black. Now I have only been in this house for 3
days, but I still know my way around the place. I walked in a straight path feeling around for the
light switch. After I found it, I flicked the switch and the lights came on with a quiet buzzing noise. I
spun the doorknob and gave the door a little push, but the door still seemed to creak loudly. I looked
ahead of me. The hallway I was standing in was a lot brighter then my room had been because the

Business Opening
Opening up a business may be one of the hardest things one can do. There is a great amount of
effort that goes into creating a business and even greater effort to make it successful. Before opening
a business, owners are obligated to keep fresh, open ideas, have good management, and being able
to financially sustain their business. Even this may not be enough to create a striving, successful
business. There are many factors that go into whether a business is successful or a failure.
One of the main reasons why small businesses fail is because of the owners/entrepreneurs
themselves. This mainly goes for poor management skills that bring businesses to their demise.

customers. St. Marseille worries about the success of the New Sudbury location once West 49 opens
and estimates that in fiscal year 2004 annual store sales at this location would total $350,000 and all
other expenses would remain comparatively stable.

Skateboarding became a popular sport and by 2004 there were nine city skateboard parks and plans

Chakra Opening – What Is The Right Way To Achieve This?

Our chakra system consists of eight main chakras with each chakra situated at a different body
points. If you need to check the health of the chakra, it is reflected by the health of body region
where chakra is positioned. The chakras are connected with our personality traits and are centers of
energy within our body. Our body consists of eight main chakras, each located at different positions
and associated with a color.

There are energy healers who help in opening of the chakras, balancing them as well as putting
energy in them. But there are some other ways too to achieve the same. In the preceding paragraphs
we will learn different ways to open up the chakras.
To open the chakras you need to first imagine light glowing at each chakra and the beginning of this
is done at the root chakra or the base. The color of this light is red due to this chakra color being red.
One way to open the chakras is by making use of binaural beats whose effect is immediately seen.
This method also saves you from years of intense meditation training for opening of the chakras.
Isochronic tones and monaural beats are some other ways to open the chakras.
The next way is to practice meditation for opening the chakras. Anyone can get into this practice.
There are spiritual masters who have all their chakras open and our three chakras positioned at the
spine bottom are already open. The heart chakra, the fourth chakra is closed for many people. If this
heart chakra is open, then you are able to give out love and compassion. By practicing meditation
you will be able to open the higher chakras which are the centers of

Law And Order: Special Victims Unit
The opening credits of a television show can convey significant meaning concerning what topics
and themes the show will be discussing. While it's true that some opening credits, for example One
Tree Hill and Gossip Girl, are superficial and paired with nothing but a catchy song, some also offer
potential insight. After examining the introduction for Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, it's
clear this show's opening credits falls under the later category. Law and Order: Special Victims Unit
deals with sexual crimes, which is made evident in the opening, but also focuses on New York City
law enforcements' role in preventing these crimes. Through the us of color and pairing inspiring city

While most of the credits are in black and white, certain images in color stand out. For example, at
the beginning and end strategically placed images of New York buildings are seen in color, as if to
highlight all the darkness and corruption contained inside such a beautiful city. Moreover, although
consistently in black and white, it's evident the child object images flash from a darker version to a
lighter version. This is significant because historically white is a color that symbolizes purity and
innocence. With this color change, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit is further emphasizing the
horrible and disturbing corruption that results from crimes committed against children. In another
instance of color change, there is a moment where a woman's legs are shown in a slightly tinted
brown color with the words "Molestation" beginning to appear. However, the shot changes to a
group of prostitutes, and while the world "Molestation" continues to run cross the screen, the
lettering and image are now in black and white. Since the image switches from a female victim in
color to a black and white shot of a group of women participating in an illegal activity, the change
appears to symbolize loss of light and thus the rise of darkness and corruption. Hence, color is used
effectively to create a dark versus light tone and reflect themes of

applicable to the credit scene.
At the beginning of the sequence the audience is greeted with the visuals of a woman's face however

All these effects contribute and reflect the thriller genre. Firstly an extreme close up is used on the
women's face this specifically on the lips and eyes this straight away conveys the message to the
audience that a female presence will be relevant within the film also a red filter was put onto the
screen this may connote to the audience that there will be a love interest within the film or there will
be gore and violence. However after the filter is placed a pink spiral within the women eyes starts to
emerge and also seems to get bigger and bigger this strongly foreshadows that there will be a female
protagonist and also a love interest as the colour red and pink strongly symbolise love/lust and
femininity. Also to complement this the background colour is very DE saturated and dark this makes
the visuals look more bold and highlighted thus making the overall effect greater. The black DE

Alexandria, VA 22314 February 27, 2011 Dear Store Manager, Due to rising gas prices store policy

All stores will be closed on Sundays. By cutting down on days and hours this allows us to keep the
great low prices that our customers are use to and it also allows for all existing locations to stay
open so that you can continue to shop with us at any of your favorite locations. Your business is
highly valued to us and we will continue to provide the same great service that we pride ourselves
in. Implementing these changes will allow for us to provide the same great prices. We look forward
to your business and are proud to offer you the best retail experience available. Best wishes, Jordan
Pappas Pubic relations Manager Part III: In writing this portfolio I found it extremely difficult to put
myself in the position of the Manager, Employee, and Consumer. I found it important to do so, so
that I could effectively deliver the bad news in an effective manner without disappointing anyone
and also showing how the cuts in hours could be beneficial to everyone affected. In most academic
writing assignments you only have to think of one type of audience but in this case we were forced
to think about multiple audiences. The difference with this paper compared to the writing
assignments that I've had to do in the past is the papers that I've done before required research in
order to gather appropriate information to put into the assignment. With this one I had to learn to put

Character Analysis Of Amc's Breaking Bad
First aired in January 2008, AMC's Breaking Bad, was when audiences were initially introduced to
protagonist, Walter White, in the driver's seat of an old RV wearing nothing but a gasmask and his
(AMC regulated) underwear. The middle aged Walter White is a passionate chemist and somewhat
unsuccessful high school chemistry teacher. The poorly remunerated and disrespected educator is
diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and pairs with a former student, Jesse Pinkman, in a life of
crime to produce a highly superior form of crystal methamphetamine, with the attempts of providing
for the financial wellbeing of his wife, Skylar and son, Walter White Jr., who was born with cerebral
palsy.
Shot in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Breaking Bad addresses the ... Show more content on

The narrative complexity in Breaking Bad owes also to the show's enigmatic and transformative
characters. Walt is depicted as an upstanding family man, working two jobs to provide for his family
and enriching young minds as a teacher. However, in the first three episodes Walt's character
changes are dramatic.
The first episode of the show features a scene in which Walt discusses the concepts of chemistry and
specifically the notion of chemistry phases of change to his high school students. This analogy of
chemical change can appropriately be adapted to understand Walt's psychological changes.
The audience is presented with a man who is depicted as a victim of modern day society. Analogous
to many other individuals, Walt is the breadwinner in the White family with financial struggles such
that his teacher's compensation is not enough to cover his expenses. Furthermore, he is a man
having just been diagnosed with terminal cancer and in his turmoil experiences a moment of
weakness and decides to produce drugs, as he is desperate to provide for his family after his death.
This fraught man's motivation turns violent and gruesome just an episode later through a series of
two murders by the

Footloose Movie Analysis

  • 1. Footloose Movie Analysis Footloose "Tonight I gotta cut loose, footloose, kick off my sunday shoes. Jack, get back, come on before we crack." (Footloose, Kenny Loggins) For this essay, I chose to watch Footloose made in 1984 and directed by Herbert Ross and Footloose made in 2011 directed by Craig Brewer. Both movies centered around the town of Bomont, a secluded town with out of the ordinary beliefs. In this town, dancing and partying of any sort was strictly against the law and teenagers were seemingly miserable. There was little to no self expression and even listening to provocative music or any music too loud, could get you a ticket with a hefty fine. The reason behind the strict rules is that several years back, five teens from Bomont High School died in a car wreck after they were drinking and dancing too much. Each of these movies have some things in common, but have more differences than anything. Some of the main differences are the opening credits of each movie, how and who Ren arrives to Bomont at the beginning of the movie, the "chicken" races between Ren and Jeff, and the book burning in town square. In the 1984 version, the movie opens with the song "Footloose" and the first thing the viewers see is the shoes and feet of many different people dancing. One of the major things that you notice is the type and style of the shoes such as leg warmers and socks with heels which tells you what era the movie was made in. As the credits roll across the screen, the music continues to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She struggles in school, fights with her parents, and most importantly, doesn't open up to anyone about her feelings. As the novel extends to the middle point, Melinda slowly begins to thaw. Not only does she start to unfreeze, she begins to open up to specific and important people in her life. Opening up allows her to feel true happiness and trust. FInally, as the book starts to make way towards the ending, Melinda is starting to fully unveil and open up to important people in her life. The author is explaining that if the character thaws out instead of holding it all in, the character's life will become much better. Melinda will have people by her side for the next tough situation that heads her way. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She struggles in school, fights with her parents, and most importantly, doesn't open up to anyone about her feelings. The protagonist doesn't know how to express her feelings to others, so she expresses them differently. "I bite my lips... they bleed." (Anderson 5) Also, Melinda believes expressing feelings makes it worse and that things are better left unsaid. The story stated, "It is easier not to say anything. Shut your trap, button your lip, can it. All that crap on TV about communication and expressing feelings is a lie. (Anderson 9) "I knew you were trouble the first time I saw you. I've taught here for twenty–four years and I can tell what's going on in a kid's head just by looking in their eyes... You just earned yourself a demerit." (Anderson 9) This quote is explaining how in the novel, Melinda continuously ignores authority and her parents. In conclusion, throughout the start of the novel, Melinda's life is completely frozen. Narrative and Genre Features in the Opening Sequence of Pulp Fiction A narrative is the story itself and generic features are elements expected to be contained within a certain category of film. Pulp Fiction is labeled as a gangster film; however gangster films follow very precise generic elements such a death, contraband's, violence, wealth and strong family loyalties. Pulp Fiction doe follow the above mentioned elements but the locations of the action are unorthodox. Screen gangster activities tend to take place in sophisticated up market places as gangsters tend to be perceived as sophisticated and highly respected and feared individuals in society. This is a generic convention which is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However these two sit and weigh up the pro's and con's before they engage in the activity. The male says '.... no–body ever robs restaurants' This illustrates they are breaking conventions. In a traditional narrative we expect to see characters that have prominent roles in the film to be in the opening sequence; also you'd expect the story contained in the opening sequence to be followed up. This is not the case in Pulp Fiction. We leave the opening scene in a moment of action. Therefore we are set up with the expectation of what happens next? In a traditional linear narrative this is a question which is likely to be answered. However in Pulp Fiction the next scene contains different characters and a different plot. We do not return to the opening story till the end of the film. The next scene contains the opening credits. The music is upbeat and compliments the emotional intensity of the two thieves' situation. The music also suggests we are still with the two thieves' story. In the middle of the title track we hear a radio changing dial and a new track plays 'Jungle Boogie.' This suggests unpredictability. This is also a subversion of traditions in itself as it doesn't happen in any other film.

  • 5. The Descent Grade a The film the descent uses a range of shots, sound, editing and symbolisation to create an ominous atmosphere; in effect this makes the horror aspect in the film really stand out as it leaves the viewer deciding what happens in specific parts of the film, which all ties in with the films ending. This all makes the film very subjective and leaves much of the opening scenes open to interpretation which is very enticing for a horror movie. The films opening sequence contains many things which symbolise the events in the movie and starts to define what genre the movie is, because the music is fairly ambient and deep suggesting danger which implies it's a horror or a thriller movie. Also in the final scene Sarah leaves Juno for dead to get revenge on what she did to Beth which also shows how what they are wearing indicates the loyalty aspect of their relationship. This subtle costume difference is very clever because even at the very start of the film characters are already being divided and given a specific role in the film to play. Throughout the whole boating scene there are many different shots, edits, sounds and effects which make the whole scene upbeat and adventurous. A shot type which does this is the aerial (bird's eye) view which in effect presents the tight squeezes in the waterfalls and the sheer size of the waterfall that they in. Also the edits in this scene are very fast keeping everything upbeat and to show how Sarah, Beth and Juno would be seeing things. These edits are also giving a very clear representation of white water rafting as a sport on a whole and that it is generally a very courageous, brave, adventurous thing to do. Through out the scene we see several shots of the little girl as if its Sarah's point of view and she is looking at her keeping most of her attention on her showing that Sarah and her have a very strong emotional bond and yet again that the film is going to be a very female orientated film. The Opening Sequences of David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron's Film Version of Great Expectations In this media assignment I shall be analyzing and comparing the similarities and differences of two famous directors' film versions of 'Great Expectations'. The two directors are David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron. David Lean's version was more popular and well known than Alfonso Cuaron's because Lean was the first director to actually direct 'Great Expectations'. This made it more difficult for Alfonso Cuaron because he had to bring the film up to date by making the film more modern and there have also been 10 other films based on the novel 'Great Expectations'. Lean has created this mood and theme so that the audience would want to know what the film actually contains, whether it is horror or drama. David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron are using the different techniques to keep the audience interested in the movie. The soundtrack of both versions is different because Alfonso Cuaron has played music throughout his opening frames. He has introduced sound effects such as waves that give the audience a pleasant sound to their ears; this same effect is employed with seagulls. The music that is actually played has a joyful and happy mood, which encourages the audience to think that the film is a non–violent film. But when Magwitch appears from underneath the water in the tenth frame and grabs Pip, at this point the music changes from joyful and happy to dramatic and shocking. • 7. Descriptive Essay On An Abandoned House A group of friends walked up to an old, seemingly abandoned house. They couldn't see inside because of the dirt and cobwebs on the windows. When they turned the doorknob to see if it was locked, the door creaked open as if it has been closed for years. Me and my friends , Hayden ,Annie ,Kacy , and Rush were walking up old stairs to this abandoned house . As we walk in the house the door shut Annie screamed and I told her to ,''shut up ,'' we all didn't think about the door closing on its on except Annie . So we keep walking around to see if there is light willed Annie keeps yapping about the door. As we were walking around to see if there was light , we did not proceed that we were in a abound house so the light will not work because no one lives here so no one could pay the bills . So we looked in Rush's bag to get the flashlights . As we walk around Kacy started to joke around like what if we die , or what if theres ghost ,or what if we get trap here , so that made Annie really scared . kacy loves to try to scarier use but it doesn't work expect Annie . • 8. Personal Narrative: My Decision To Close The Tualatin Haggen I am incredibly disappointed in the decision to close the Tualatin Haggen which has been a part of the Tualatin community for many years. Our Haggen has been around for my entire life and I always feel at home when I go there; a feeling I believe I share with many of its other customers. I'm friends with many of the employees and am incredibly saddened to hear that almost all of them will have no place to work after the store closes. The people who work there are some of the kindest and hardest working people I have ever met and deserve to have a feeling of security knowing where their next paycheck is coming from. There will be an empty grocery store in the heart of our town causing our economy to suffer drastically. If the lease was up, a new company could buy the location and add a new store to our community, but, instead, the building will now sit there until the lease is up. Also, it is unfair to refuse to restock the store. It is unfair to the employees who might be out of a job weeks before you told them they would. Being out of a job sooner than expected can be detrimental to many of the employee's lives, especially those with families to support. • 9. Analysis Of Shakespeare In Love The film Shakespeare in Love is a wonderful movie directed by John Madden. The film seems pretty straightforward at the beginning, but there are subtle things that make the film more enticing. John Madden added these things to make the film look and feel more real. I will be discussing more about this film white discussing its impact on myself and the audience. This film was set during 1590`s and that is a very important fact that must be remembered while reviewing, especially when thinking of Madden's vision of the film while directing. In the opening sequence, we see the director using subtle hints that help set the tone of the film. The opening credits are in black and white and because of this, we know that the film is set in an early time period. This, as well as the font, is what we would associate with old England. Although this was an interesting effect used to create the setting, the opening sequence as a whole, was extremely boring. Even though it was boring, the music was there to fill the gap and not leave the audience lulled to sleep. The instruments chosen and the frequent melodic tones helped further shape the setting of old England. It is obvious that Madden loved music because it is almost omni–present throughout the film. The instruments are mostly string instruments which are often accredited to classical music. The pitch, the tempo, and the loudness of the music play major roles along with the selection of instruments. If there is an important part of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It begins with the main character William Foster stuck in a traffic jam on the highway caused by construction. The first shot that opens the scene is an extreme close up of Foster's face, which allows the audience to see him in great detail. We see by his heavy breathing and sweat dripping down his face that he is in a hot environment. The camera starts to zoom out and go into a tracking shot, which allows us to see the environment that surrounds him. This is also an establishing shot. It is buzzing around him and repeatedly landing on his neck causing him to keep swatting at it. The usage of quick cuts gives the impression of tension building up for the character throughout the scene. This gives off the impression that something worse is constantly happening to Foster and he is unable to escape his uncomfortable reality. The AC breaking, window roller broken, kids screaming, cars honking and the heat wave itself are all shown so quickly so that the viewer is seeing that everything is being thrown at Foster at once and that he is starting to feel very claustrophobic and cannot seem to escape it. Since her thoughts on the visions are not stated until the very end of the movie, it is difficult to tell exactly what the visions are of, but, every vision releases some clues. For example, in the visions that feature Louise and baby Hannah or young girl Hannah, Louise is always wearing a wedding ring, whereas in reality she is not. In one vision, Hannah has made a Heptapod out of clay, which would obviously not be possible if the vision were a flashback. Also, almost every vision starts as Louise is studying the Heptapod's written language. It seems to be an odd coincidence at first, but slowly it becomes clear that the language is what triggers the visions. On top of that, the idea that language can affect the way an individual thinks and perceives time is introduced very early in the film, and reiterated several times. Stylistic Devices In The Opening Ceremony Another tendency noted in the British newspapers is the frequent use of stylistic devices such as oxymoron, antithesis or paradoxes, in order to describe the opening ceremony and Britain. Most of them were retrieved from The Guardian, but they were present in all the newspapers: The latter sentence suggests that the opening ceremony, and by extension the country itself, tends to be described as a contradictory entity. This tendency is confirmed above all in The Guardian and in The Times. As far as the adjectives are concerned, one can see that The Guardian is more objective than The Independent, which only showcased Britain and the opening ceremony under a very positive light. The black of the background symbolises darkness and the feeling of unawareness and the contrasting glowing white writing stands out against it. This is the best therapy for depression because patients need to feel like they are safe and able to talk about their problems. • 28. Pretty Little Liars: Opening Credit Analysis Reading a Media Text Pretty Little Liars' Opening Credits I have chosen to interpret, in both connotatively and denotatively ways, the opening credits to one of ABC Family's most acclaimed TV show, Pretty Little Liars. It premiered in the early summer of 2010. Based on a teen/drama/mystery series, this show has rapidly gained success. When you watch the opening credits for the first time without knowing anything about the show, it's easy to guess what the show is about; but once you know or at least have a clue of the drama, it's easier to notice the relationship between the introduction and the content. The introduction starts off with a girl, getting ready for something; her nails, hair and makeup are being done. Then, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The girls standing behind the casket are a dressed in black because it's the correct attire for a funeral, but they represent the "pretty" in the title of the show, meaning that they still keep their style and sexiness at peak. Finally, the title of the show is placed over dark clouds symbolizing that something bad has, or will happen. As state before, the theme song of the introduction is a song called "Secret". This song and, more specifically its lyrics, link perfectly everything from the intro to the drama and conflict of the show. The song has a kind of scary and mysterious melody. The lyrics of the song say: "Got a secret, can you keep it, swear this one you'll save. Better lock it in your pocket, taking this one to the grave ... and to can keep a secret if one of them is dead". The lyrics of the song help the viewer analyze the intro and because of this they may come to the conclusion that the four girls in the back of the casket may have something to do with the death of the girl. The girls' faces give the viewer a lot of information. Their facial expressions gives away the fact that they are hiding something. Their posture, and the way they move implies that they have some sort of secret they are trying not to give away. It can be implied that the four girls are hiding the same thing and that that is what is keeping them close together. I remember the first time I saw the introduction, I ... Firstly, the Fresh Meat opening titles begins with a notice which states that "All University housing is strictly Non– Smoking." The prefix 'non' is crossed out and replaced with the "weed". This linguistic sign of the word 'weed' can be signified as a slang term for marijuana, an illegal drug. Next, the iconic signs of a bicycle helmet, bullet holes and wine shown. Following on from this is a television set with an abstract green visual. This visual could be signified as similar to a computer screensaver. A metallic toy robot is indicated which creates sparks. The actor's name disappearing through the hole in the wall may suggest an imperfect character with flaws. A hole in the wall may also enable communication between two rooms that are separated by the wall. The blue lights above Charlotte Ritchie's name may symbolise a mysterious character as this shade of blue is sometimes seen this way. The mirror may indicate a character who is self–conscious. It also provides a way of tracking the continuation of events and the relationship between seemingly isolated moments in time. Film Art clearly defines both story and plot but acknowledges that there is a significant overlap between the two functions and allows a flow within the film. The opening scene builds on the credits by creating the expectation of suspense and thrill and mystery shrouding the true identity and relation of characters and setting up the disposableness of characters in the film, this adds to the complexity of Madeline's disease as the audience cant tell whether, or more when, she will die. The rooftop chase creates an expectation of dark drama, which moves into the scene with Midge in a light filled room where Scottie appears to be in control of his fear and the relationship between the two characters is established, whilst not technically part of the opening scene it instantly makes the viewer question whether their interpretation of the initial segment of the film was correct, already one is questioning their ability to pick the direction of the film. The Use of Narrative in Film Essay The Use of Narrative in Film The use of Narrative in film and other forms of media is commonplace; it has become such that the media viewer has not only come to expect it but rely on it somewhat. There are two elements in narrative film today that combine in the engaging of the audience; 'story' and 'production' elements. One example in the Australian film industry of the use of production and story elements in such a way as to engage the audiences' attention is the film 'Two Hands'. The introduction to the novel is presented in the form of letters from Robert Walton to his sister on his expedition to the North Pole, and these letters present an idea of the loneliness and heartache that he feels since he believes that he is all by himself without anyone to really talk to. These letters reveal a sad opening tone that will continue to manifest itself throughout the novel. Significance of Closing Scene (Briefly describe the closing scene. How does it resolve and/or finalize the themes of the novel? How does it connect to or contrast with the opening scene?) The closing scene also ends with letters from Walton, however they also reflect the ideas and themes made in the opening scene. The ending closes with a general feeling of loneliness, as both Frankenstein and the monster die after facing lives filled with despair and loss. Or the treehouse in the backyard where I used to play with my dolls, and read my favorite childhood book "Red light, green light." I was in my room sleeping soundly when all of the sudden I heard a big crash downstairs. My eyelids popped open, I sat up quickly and spun my head both ways. The room was black as pitch. The only light was the reflection of the moonlight shining through the the window. I lifted my blanket and moved my legs off of the bed. I rubbed my eyes with my hands as I stood up. It was still pitch black. Now I have only been in this house for 3 days, but I still know my way around the place. I walked in a straight path feeling around for the light switch. While most of the credits are in black and white, certain images in color stand out. For example, at the beginning and end strategically placed images of New York buildings are seen in color, as if to highlight all the darkness and corruption contained inside such a beautiful city. Moreover, although consistently in black and white, it's evident the child object images flash from a darker version to a lighter version. This is significant because historically white is a color that symbolizes purity and innocence. With this color change, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit is further emphasizing the horrible and disturbing corruption that results from crimes committed against children. In another instance of color change, there is a moment where a woman's legs are shown in a slightly tinted brown color with the words "Molestation" beginning to appear. However, the shot changes to a group of prostitutes, and while the world "Molestation" continues to run cross the screen, the lettering and image are now in black and white. Since the image switches from a female victim in color to a black and white shot of a group of women participating in an illegal activity, the change appears to symbolize loss of light and thus the rise of darkness and corruption.
