As the concentration of media rises along side technology so does our exposure to advertisements.
Children are especially vulnerable to the negative effects from advertising as many argue they are
unable to decipher media content from an advertisement. The center for disease control reports that
the obesity rates in children ranging from 2–11 has more than doubled in recent years. The majority
of the research for this critique comes from the United States but can be applied to nations with
similar media exposure like Canada. One predicted cause of the increase of obesity in children is

Advertisements are a way to promote sales of a product or service through visual communication.
Magazine covers, advertisements or any publication embed a set of ideologies. O'Shaughnessy and
Standler describe ideologies as "sets of social values, ideas, beliefs, feelings and representations by
which people collectively make sense of the world they live in" (2012; 174). Ideologies try to
"manipulate people into buying a way of life as well as goods" (Dyer, 1982:5). Adverts such as the
Pravda vodka example above, which appeared in the January 2014 issue of GLAMOUR magazine
add relevance to a product whether it's a certain trend, desire or mutual value in order for the
product to become a highly favoured commodity. Glamour magazine is popular amoungst young
women of all races who are middle class citizens. This specific advert was used to introduce
Pravda's new vodka range aimed at women. It communicates ideologies of feminism, class, leisure,

using Hydroxycut? Although these results may seem extreme this is what many fitness
advertisements promote; portraying unrealistic body images and displaying false results. Fitness
advertising can be found in print and broadcast forms. While fitness advertising can be viewed as
having both positives and negatives, I believe fitness advertising is negative. This paper will discuss
the negatives of fitness advertising, to include creating negative body images and promoting false

Many fitness advertisements proclaim the idea of the "perfect" body. This is done in ads targeting
both women and men. This constant display of the "perfect" body causes women and men to feel

words, "one simple actions," "come together," "save lives." These words appeal to the reader's
ethical values to donate blood and creates awareness that donation can help save many lives.
Furthermore, not only do ads create awareness for blood donation, but it also creates the realization
of specific issues, like smoking. In "Cigarettes" by Eric H. Shaw and Stuart Alan, the two authors
confer about how cigarette advertisers use promotional tools to convince consumers. Shaw and Alan
shed light on the positives of cigarettes when they asserted that "advertising also had other less
quantifiable benefits for cigarette companies: it promoted the continued social acceptability of
smoking and encouraged the incorrect belief that the majority of people smoke" (source B). Shaw
and Alan articulated that cigarette ads create a new perception that smoking is acceptable and that
majority of people do not smoke. These programs show how commercials are efficient at creating

Advertisements play a big role in how Americans consume information, products, and societal
views. Ads are shown in almost every aspect of the average person's life living within the 21st
century; and are shown in commercials, billboards, and even transportation to promote a company's
products and services. They can be very influential in how people consume products, view society,
and personal reflections; by creating different themes and styles to attract the customer's attention.

products and services they are promoting.
The effects on advertising can be very harmful to the consumer by building a materialistic,
narcissistic, or low self–esteem attitude. By promoting products with false information that looks
glamorizing and beneficial can cause consumers to spend money on items that they don't need or
that can be dangerous in the long run. The consumer will try to do whatever they can to purchase
this item to look and feel as if desirable as the people in the ads. By becoming materialistic people
start to associate products and consumerism as the highest level of importance. They become
egotistical and begin to change how they view themselves and the world because of their access to
these services and products. For others it can start to tear down a person's inner feelings and self–
esteem. The way advertisements promote a false narrative of happiness and charisma can inflict a

common argument is that the industry supports the national and global economy, by increasing
product consumption. Additionally, advertisements show consumers their choices. However, on the
other hand, advertising and its pervasiveness have created a consumer society and spread false
needs. Historically, an increase in advertising and an increase in consumerism occurred at the same
time. Although advertising in some form has existed for many centuries, the earliest advertising
specialists and agencies, appeared around the time of the Industrial Revolution. This is when

dominant form of advertising was newspapers. With the rise of modern–day technologies, digital
advertising became common on television and the internet. In this essay, I argue that advertising in

they have on individuals in society. Firstly, I will review the literature on stereotypical gender roles
within media and advertising. This will include traditional roles such as the housewife, and modern
roles such as the sex object. Secondly, I will critically evaluate and examine the effects of these roles
