Elizabeth Bennet Archetypes
By diving deeper into literature, movies, and television series it becomes clear that characters and specific traits are repeating throughout the years.
Archetypes are a base for countless characters throughout literature, the common traits of a character assist the audience into drawing conclusions
about the character. Throughout the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen it becomes clear that Elizabeth Bennet is modeling the smart and moral
young lady of this story, unlike her promiscuous and family shaming sister, Lydia, both women are fighting to find happiness. The typical good girl
character is a young lady who is moral, smart, and makes the right choices for herself in life. Elizabeth Bennet embodies these traits and lives her ...

The traits of being smart, moral, and making the correct choices for herself and her own personal happiness seen in the main character, Leslie
Knope. Knope works in the government and closely with the public, meaning being smart and moral are necessities in her character type. Knope
mirrors Elizabeth in her search for happiness, despite all rules. Often times Knope puts her work first, as she was raised by her mother to do so,
however she eventually realizes that family and friends should come before work, no matter what her mother believes. Elizabeth, also puts her
happiness first by rejecting Mr. Collins' proposal, because she knew she wouldn't be happy with him. The archetype of being an indecent and easy
woman is also represented in this show, by the character Tammy. Tammy is a librarian and is constantly trying to brainwash different men through
sex. Lydia may not be as obvious about her promiscuity, but both characters share the archetype of being that type of woman. The archetypes of being
a good girl and a bad girl has been and will continue to be repeated for countless years throughout numerous plot lines.
In the vast majority of storylines they are full of archetypes, such as the good and bad girl characters that are applied in Austen's Pride and Prejudice.
Austen employs these two archetypes to show that breaking rules can lead be freely and lead

Elizabeth Proctor Conflicts
The Crucible
"The witch–hunt was not, however, a mere repression. It was also, and as importantly, a long overdue opportunity for everyone so inclined to publicly
express his guilt and sin, under the cover of accusations against the victims." (Page 7 of Act One). These conflicts result and produce even more tragic
occurrences. These conflicts are between either those have sinned and been accused – John Proctor, those who have been sinned against and accused
out of jealousy and fear – Elizabeth Proctor, and those who conducted an act of rage, jealousy, ignorance, and hatred, as Abigail Williams had. The two
relationships between the Proctors and then John and Abigail and the conflict that tie in with all three situations make up the ... Show more content on

John knows he did wrong and had repented his ways, while Abigail only wished to be with him and refused to repent or forget what happened between
her and John. After John admits that he wants nothing to do with her, she stirs up a revenge plan and accuses both John and Abigail of dealings with
the Devil. Through jealousy, revenge and resentment, Abigail cooks up chaos in Salem– the sort of chaos that could have been easily prevented
considering the contributions to the event.
The conflicts between Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail are quite evident in the fact that Elizabeth is fully aware of John's affair with Abigail. Abigail
hates Elizabeth for firing her and taking her away from the close proximity to John. So, essentially, the conflict between the two derives from the love
they both have for John, causing great animosity between the two. Elizabeth is conflictingly threatened by Abigail's youth and beauty and the
assumption that she may still desire her husband. From that obsessive desire, Elizabeth's life, along with her husband's life, may be at stake. Clearly,
because of Abigail's desire, Elizabeth was accused, causing John to involve himself in the case to save his wife, but then losing his one.
John wants to get over his mistakes, to do just that he has decided to refuse Abigail's love. He is dealing with relationships with two women, which is
a huge crime under the strict rules of the Puritans. In regards to

My uncle has spoken to me about that of witchcraft. I assured him that there weren't no witchcraft and that it was just common dancing and nothing
more. I went to the woods with Tituba and we danced in the forest. We danced as Tituba sang her Barbados songs it was only common dancing and
nothing more, nothing bad came of it but my uncle he was sure there was more to it than mere dancing. It was early in the morning when we were

She is witty, loyal, and clever but also impulsive, stubborn, and outspoken. She is Elizabeth Bennet. The protagonist in the famous Jane Austen novel
'Pride and Prejudice' remains to be one of the most famous women in English Literature to date. Girls everyday say that Elizabeth Bennet is such an

Darcy, himself. From then her true colors start to shine across each page and she comes into herself fully. Darcy begins by ignoring her at a public
dance and then further on for disturbing the possible link between Jane, her sister, and Charles Bingley. There is definite reasoning behind it but
Elizabeth is quick to judge those she encountered making it an important part of her overcoming her obstacles to become the romantic of the
novel. For a while the reader sits there as she judges these first impressions of Darcy and his actions so hard when all they can think about is how
they are going to fall in love so hard at the end. Since her father is not wealthy enough to carry on his estate with no sons she practically must marry
to get some money back to the Bennet's. Darcy starts to fall for her, because apparently how could you not, and proposes to marriage right away.
He brings up their differences in class and how it would basically be a good investment to marry him. With Elizabeth's judgement, the reader wants
to take her side since she is quick to read a situation and react in a way that present how she is feeling with ease. She's no often wrong so as the
reader we like to think if she can do this, why can't we and it pushes us to this ideal version of ourselves modeled after her. Darcy gives Elizabeth a

Queen Elizabeth I : Queen Elizabeth I
Queen Elizabeth I: Queen Elizabeth I was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Coming to rule in 1558, the Queen was now succeeding
half–sister Mary I of England–– also known as "Bloody Mary". Elizabeth had been noted for a multitude of things during this reign. The survival in a
time in which government was at its worst, accomplishing the greatest military victory in English history, and the ability to hold the throne for a stable
forty–four–year reign are merely a few. These do not even come close to how the Queen was embedded in history as a great ruler. Due to the profound
changes under Elizabeth I, this unique approach to ruling a newly constructed era is what led the Queen to be considered England's greatest monarch.
Elizabeth, being a devout Protestant, had proposed to remove laws favoring Catholicism. Many factors had played parts in the reasoning to go against
the Catholic religion. One mainly being that during Mary's reign Elizabeth was jailed due to being suspected of supporting Protestant rebels. Though
much of that faithfulness came from the fact Catholic jurisdiction had not recognized her majesty's birth as legitimate. Even with being against the
church, not once was there a fight. Only when threatened by extremists did the royal court get riled. Outcomes of this plan had resulted in a
complicated and divided government. The top national bodies included the monarch, the Privy Council, and the Parliament. Each of these dealt with
the ruling, advising,

She was also well known for her acquisitive "explorations and political and commercial expansion, extended into Wales, Lowland Scotland, Ireland,

literature, and scholarship (Wagner. 1999, p. 101).
The tales of her Majesty and love towards marriage not sitting well together is indeed a juicy story, told by Sarah Gristwood, in her book. During the
time between 1565–1567 there was quite a tempest brewing, between, Elizabeth and Mary regarding one Robert Dudley, who was trying ungraciously,
to get Elizabeth's attention and he hoped to influence her into marriage, but Elizabeth was no fool. She was one ... Show more content on

Rivalry Of Elizabeth
Rivalry between Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots
Religion is a main reason why Elizabeth executed Mary. Evidence which supports this reason is that some English Catholics would have preferred
Mary as Queen of England. This would have made Elizabeth feel as she would need to execute Mary because Mary gave Catholics a reason to rebel
against Elizabeth. Elizabeth was a protestant queen and most Catholics preferred a queen of their own belief. Thus, this was the best time to rebel
against Elizabeth and gain a new catholic queen who lead the country. All they had to do, was releasing her from imprisonment. An argument in
support of this evidence is that in 1570 the Pope issued a Bull ordering. Catholics should disobey Elizabeth because she was heretic. Catholics must
follow the Pope and believe in him as the legitimate head of church. McLaren describes that not solely the papal bull had consequences in the year
1570, but also James Stewart's assassination:
If the near conjunction of the papal bull and the Northern Rebellion does not explain the change in character of English anti–Catholicism, 1570 still
remains a key date in its career. The key event, however, belongs to a British history whose parameters and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This would give the Catholics courage to take Elizabeth off the throne and crown a catholic queen instead, as this is what the Pope wanted. A
further piece of evidence is the Northern rebellion of 1569. It was a catholic attempt to replace Elizabeth with Mary. This would have made
Elizabeth feel that she would need to execute Mary because this event happened so quickly as she has only been there for a year. Mary did not agree
to it because she knew it would fail. Religion links to other factors such as dynastic reasons, because Mary said she was the rightful Queen of England
and Elizabeth was illegitimate because the Catholics did not believe in

In fact, "The greatest achievement in English history, the "breaking the bonds of Rome", and the establishment of spiritual independence, was
completed without bloodshed under Elizabeth's auspices, and Elizabeth may have the glory of the work" (Time.com, 2). The people of England were
in no need of a government that was more concerned about it more than it was for the people.
Elizabeth was Queen but she established good ties with parliament. England did not need the rule of a monarchy that controlled strictly, took the
people's wealth, and taxed. By taxing the people parliament could control the people (Funk & Wagnalls vol. 9, 193). However, this was the exact
opposite of what Queen Elizabeth did. She was wealthy, however, she allowed the people of England to have the opportunity to gain wealth. Without

Elizabeth Bennet Individualism
The society of 18th century England was incredibly rigid and defined. There was little to no movement between classes and every person's role was
clearly outlined. However, in the novel, Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy do not adhere to the typical
behaviors of this society. Elizabeth is individualistic and opinionated while Darcy transcends class barriers. While both Elizabeth and Darcy stray from
the social norm, through their love story and subsequent marriage, Austen shows that individualism should be rewarded. Elizabeth has a unique,
outspoken, and willful nature that sets her apart from other characters. She represents "individualism, bourgeois initiative, natural energy, and a

He has a deep admiration for the social hierarchy, which is in stark contrast with Elizabeth's individualistic nature. His 10,000 pounds a year, coupled
with his pompous behavior, separate him from others. Due to Darcy's wealth, aloofness, and disdain for those beneath him, he "incarnates social
tradition, the aristocracy, stability, and respect for the past" (Wilkes). Darcy exemplifies the highest rank in the social order and because of this,
exhibits an air of superiority. While speaking to Sir William at the Lucas's party, Darcy states that he is "fond of superior society" (Austen, 28). This
shows that Darcy would rather not interact with people in the lower classes, which serves as an obstacle toward his eventual engagement to Elizabeth.
His tendencies toward arrogance and self–importance are not typical to people such as the Bennet's. Darcy's contempt for the lower classes alienate
him from Elizabeth. While expressing his love for her, he says, "In vain I have struggled. It will not do" (Austen, 285). This suggests that Darcy did
not want to love Elizabeth because of her status. Darcy is attracted to Elizabeth because of her unusual behavior, however, in his first proposal to her,
he shows that he has tried to suppress his feelings. Darcy knows that he loves her, yet he tried to convince himself that he does not have any feelings
towards her, because he believes that she is beneath him. This stems back to his traditional values. Darcy knows that he has a high status and is
extremely powerful, so he cannot understand why he is experiencing feelings toward someone who is so significantly less wealthy than he is. Darcy is
disdainful toward Elizabeth's status and connections, and his temperament initially prevents them from being

Personality Polarity of Elizabeth Bennet: A Pride and Prejudice Character Analysis
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is a revolutionary novel that portrays the social expectations of women during this time. In Pride and Prejudice,
women were expected to married to a successful and wealthy young man that could provide them comfort and economic security. Austen contrasts this
social standard by creating the main protagonist of the book, Elizabeth Bennet. Elizabeth Bennet, who is headstrong and clever, believes that the
purpose of marriage is to find love rather than economic security. Because of her beliefs, she is viewed as very unorthodox and stubborn. As a result,

be inferred that he liked Elizabeth dancing with him. Ms. Bingley also says that she must walk properly. When entering the Bingley estate she
interrupted the environment with her presence and walked sloppily. For her voice and the way in which she talked it can be seen that most normal
people considered this to be a bad trait when relating to her. An example of this can be when Elizabeth and Lady Catherine are talking.Jane Austen
makes the relationships between Elizabeth and those that she was close to define her personality. The biggest sole example could be the interaction
between Elizabeth and her sister Jane because of how close Elizabeth was to her. When Jane fell sick during her journey to the Bingley's, it was
Elizabeth that made the treacherous 3 mile journey on foot to care for her sister. This kind of dedication to her sister is seem by the reader that

Elizabeth Bennet Changes
The main characters in the story show case that, we as humans, have the ability to change our perspectives and personalities that ultimately guide us.
Jane Austen wrote the novel in a time where our social norms were so radical compared to today. The change in society allows us to greatly
appreciate the author's work. The main characters are Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. The characters develop as the story progresses because of the
events that lead to their drastic changes. Elizabeth has 4 sisters and comes from a poor family background. Although her father owns land, the sisters
cannot inherit any of that as only males do during that time. So this puts the emphasis on marrying a rich person that is well off and well ultimately
take care of her and her offspring. Due to this, Ms. Bennet is anxious to marry off all her 5 daughters. Elizabeth can be described as a witty and
intelligent person. She is her father's favorite daughter. In the beginning of the story, she misjudges Mr. Darcy by how he acted at the Ball. Mr. Darcy

Elizabeth The 1998 movie "Elizabeth," directed by Shekhar Kapur, from a script by Michael Hirst, is a historical epic that takes place during and after
the mid–16th–century period when England's Princess Elizabeth was nearly eliminated by her half–sister, Queen Mary. It portrays the events of Mary's
death, Elizabeth's ascension to the throne, and the struggles and events that she must overcome in order to preserve the strength of the English

They believe that she is part of a conspiracy to kill Mary, ascend the throne, and reinstate Protestantism. The movie shows Elizabeth being captured
and taken to the Tower of London, where she is kept for short period of time. During the time when she is imprisoned, Mary's advisors, namely
Norfolk, attempt to persuade her to put Elizabeth to death, but Mary is reluctant to do so. Elizabeth is taken to see Mary, who at this point knows
that she is dying of ovarian cancer. Mary begs Elizabeth to promise that when she becomes Queen, she will preserve Catholicism in England.
Elizabeth promises only to "do as her heart tells her to do," which angers Mary, and she is then put under house arrest at the royal manor of
Woodstock in Oxfordshire, where she stays until Mary's death. In reality, these events followed somewhat of a different course. Elizabeth was
suspected of plotting the reinstatement of Protestantism with a French ambassador and other Protestant activists, and Mary's advisors suggested that
Elizabeth be put under surveillance, as it might be then possible to find reasons for sending her to the tower. Investigations proceeded, and Elizabeth
was finally sent to the tower, where she was held for two months in a suite of four rooms, where only her servants could visit her. When she was

Jane Bennet. Through confiding in Jane, Elizabeth shares more. She allows Jane to share her pleasure and distress. As Elizabeth's confidante, Jane
influences the plot, theme, and message that Jane Austen conveys in the novel.
Jane is a natural confidante for Elizabeth. She is a relative and therefore more inclined to be understanding of Elizabeth's disposition and, often, her

Elizabeth expresses her love of Jane by explaining that she "only wants to think her perfect" (Austen 116).
The mutual trust between the women creates an environment that encourages openness with one another and the ease of revealing information to each
other. It is because of the pivotal aspect of trust that Elizabeth is able to confide in her sister. This is proven when she "related to Jane the next day
what had passed between Mr. Wickham and herself" even though she kept the exchange secret from everyone else and Jane "listened with astonishment
and concern" (Austen 73).
Elizabeth's trust in Jane is strengthened by the weakening of trust in her dear friend Charlotte Lucas. Elizabeth is, naturally, shocked when she hears
that Charlotte is engaged to be married to Mr. Collins mere days after Elizabeth herself had refused his hand in marriage. "In as short a time as Mr.
Collins's speeches would allow, everything was settled between them to the satisfaction of both" (Austen 106). Jane's role as confidante is strengthened
by this sudden marriage arrangement because Elizabeth's "disappointment in Charlotte made her turn with fonder regard to her sister, of whose

along very well, in fact it seems as if they are the exact opposite of each other; which leads to them starting to enjoy the challenges they both bring
to one another. Mr. Darcy first influences her when disrespects her family for being odd and unusual, saying how (quote), her sister Jane is not a
good fit for Mr. Bingley and how he shouldn't waste his time with people who aren't as rich, educated, or as sophisticated as him. This influences
Elizabeth in a positive way because it finally gets her to speak up for herself and her family, and by her debating against Mr. Darcy, it influences the
both of them to get to know one another, because he finally sees someone who might be interesting enough for him to enjoy. Another way Mr. Darcy
influences Elizabeth is when he splits up her sister Jane and Mr. Bingley because he thought she wasn't serious about him because she never openly
expressed how she felt about him. This affects Elizabeth in a negative way because she is the only one who truly understands her sister, and know that

neither Darcy nor Wickham could she think without feeling she had been blind, partial, prejudiced, absurd" (122). Elizabeth now realizes just
how prejudiced she's been and how unfair towards Darcy she has felt. Her prejudice changes here once she is revealed all of the facts. When
Darcy asks Mr. Bennet for Elizabeth's hand in marriage, her father is very skeptic because all of the time she has known Darcy, she has completely
hated him. When questioned, Elizabeth answers, "I love him. Indeed he has no improper pride... You do not know what he really is; then pray do
not pain me by speaking of him in such terms" (219). At this point in her life Elizabeth has finally realized that all of her feelings of hate were
misplaced and that she completely misjudged Darcy. Now that she realizes this she has to deflect the same judgments that she had once made herself.
She realizes what a wonderful person he is and how in love she truly is with him. All of the time she has known him she has spent speaking

Elizabeth I: The Monarchs Of Elizabeth I
England has a long line of monarchs, succession, and religious conflict. One Monarch that stands out from the rest is Elizabeth I, who can
arguably be considered one of the greatest Monarchs in recorded history. With a humble beginning, and a long troublesome journey in her life, she
has never faltered or allow the situations in her life affect her person. When she succeeded Mary Tudor, England was in a chaotic state, Elizabeth I
had a lot to do to earn the trust of the people, that a female Monarch is possible to be successful. As a monarch and person she broke boundaries and
demonstrated religious tolerance, more so than previous. During the reign of Elizabeth I, England's economic status stabilized and she was apart of
the Renaissance period, which was one of the most significant and transformative periods. She represents the ideal woman and maintains the idea of
purity. Elizabeth I, is a queen that is well known and is seen as England's savior sent from Heaven to save them... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

As successor of Mary Tudor, it became clear that the people were not keen on having a women rule over them. At this time, women are seen as
lower and unfit to hold a powerful position such as a monarch. This would be one of the challenges Elizabeth would face, since as a female
monarch, she would need to prove that she is fit to rule. Elizabeth I is probably one of the most celebrated Monarchs and beloved of her Century.
Growing up from a broken home and becoming bastardized by her own father, she became the second Queen of England and arguably to some the
first. The question arises if Elizabeth was in all that great of a sovereign that History plays it out to be. Elizabeth I can be arguably one of the greatest
Monarchs in the history, because of what she has proved and done for England. Establishing the Protestant faith in England while adhering to those
comfortable in Catholicism. Elizabeth I

Elizabeth is a young girl with ambitious aspirations. It has always been her dream to be a doctor and help people. However, Elizabeth lives in an

with the constant thought of how to survive in a place where as time progresses the rich get richer while the poor suffer. Currently, millions of people
are living in poverty while the government hides and ignores the reality. Poverty has been part of human history. Literature often allows experts to note
that poverty has been around for quite a long time. For example, In the 19th century, William Graham Sumner, an advocate of social Darwinism,

The Queen Elizabeth And Elizabeth
I dropped my bag in the hallway of my grandmother's house and went to throw my arms around her as she sat at the table, looking through a pile
of family papers and photos. She looked up and smiled at me, explaining that she had been looking through old papers that my great grandmother
had kept. My eyes fixed on a photo of some people standing on a balcony, waving to a huge crowd. Grandma explained that this was George VI
and Queen Elizabeth with the two princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. It was taken by someone my great grandmother knew, who was employed at
the palace. Apparently those two little princesses were always into mischief; they were into everything. As with most siblings they used to fight all
the time but if anyone tried to come between them, they'd stick together like glue. The younger sister was forever getting into scrapes that her elder
sister, Elizabeth, had to try to get her out of. While Margaret was the fun sister, Elizabeth was the responsible one. Elizabeth had no choice: she was
to grow up to become the Queen of Britain. I looked at Grandma enquiringly. "Yes, the present Queen", she responded. "That reminds me of your
great grandfather Phillip and his brother Alan", she said picking up some pages from a timeworn diary. "Philip, the older brother always the
adventurous one, signed up to defend the Mother Country as soon as World War I was declared. His brother, Alan, who had a quieter, more reflective
nature, felt the need to follow his brother, just

Elizabeth Bennet Flaws
Too flawless, or too flawed. This is what the characters of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen wrestle with. Pride and Prejudice is an intriguing love
story between two characters, Mr. Darcy, and Elizabeth Bennet. Throughout the story the characters realize the biggest problem holding them back
from being together, are their flaws. Mr. Darcy struggles with a flaw of pride. He is overwhelmingly prideful, believing that he is higher than anyone
else, that he is never to be laughed at or even mocked. Because of this, Mr. Darcy doesn't let himself be surrounded with people who aren't good
enough for him, including Elizabeth. Elizabeth struggles with a different flaw, a flaw if prejudice. She is stubborn with her opinion, and has a quick

Darcy is a character who overflows with pride. Darcy is extremely high on the social class ladder, and because of this he believes himself to be
better then others that surround him, he even says himself that "[his] temper would perhaps be called resentful" (49). Throughout the book he
allows himself to keep building his pride even though he knows that it is not right. He treats others like they are less then him, and doesn't make
time to get to know them because he thinks that it is a waste. Darcy and I both struggle with this. I have caught myself to many times putting others
below me because I feel that they are not smart enough, or that they are too different then me to be worth my time. I know that I am a smart and
accomplished young lady, and I am very proud of that. I have always felt that I am more mature than those in my grade and that I am essentially "to
good" to be associated with them. I pity my classmates most of the time for their lack of worldly experience and immaturity. I find myself dreaming
of the day where I get to go to college. Smart, worldly, mature– these are those who I want to surround myself with. This is something that I am
ashamed of. I know that I do this and I don't feel good about it. However, I feel as though I can't stop feeling this way. Darcy and I both are trapped in
a world where we think that we are better than those who surround us. This is unhealthy. Its unhealthy for me to think and behave in this way, I know

Elizabeth In Pride And Prejudice
After reading through Mr. Darcy's letter, Elizabeth is bombarded with mixed emotions. Her mind was already decided to dislike him, but now there
was evidence that she had greatly misjudged him and his character. Having a physical letter instead of a brisk conversation allows Elizabeth to think
everything other, apply logic, and allow her to find the truth. Elizabeth eventually reaches the conclusion that her assumptions about Mr. Darcy were
all wrong and cries "How despicably have I acted...I, who have prided myself on my discernment...Had I been in love, I could not have been more

Darcy as an unpleasant and arrogant man, therefore Elizabeth was more inclined to also thing badly of him. While touring the mansion, Mrs.
Reynolds, the housekeeper, tells Elizabeth and her companions "If I was to go through the world, I could not meet with a better [master]. But I have
always observed, that they who are good natured when children, are good–natured when they grow up; and [Mr. Darcy] was always the sweetest

can give his sister any pleasure, is sure to be done in a moment. There is nothing he would not do for her." (167). Mrs. Reynolds gives Elizabeth a
different way of seeing Mr. Darcy; not as an egotistical man of wealth, but a responsible and caring gentleman. Also while atPemberley, Darcy
exemplifies other gentleman like qualities, such as being polite, attentive, and gracious, to a degree never before witnessed by Elizabeth. Elizabeth's
aunt, Mrs. Gardiner, remarked "[Mr. Darcy] has not an ill–natured look. On the contrary, there is something pleasing about his mouth when he speaks.
And there is something of dignity in his countenance, that would not give one an unfavorable idea of his heart." (173). After so much evidence

Elizabeth Bennet Traits
In the book, Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen, I chose Elizabeth Bennet in order to deepen my understanding of her characteristic traits.
Elizabeth Bennet is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, who wanted her or one of the sisters to marry the rich bachelor, Mr. Bingley. I chose
Elizabeth because she is a strong woman who likes to take risks and enjoys challenging others. She is different from her other sisters because she is
an independent woman who thinks for herself as well as helping others. Elizabeth has her own opinions of herself and does not let anyone belittle her.
Not only is she a brave woman, she is also a beautiful lady that has attracted the ruthless Mr. Darcy. Even with her beauty, she is feisty towards Mr.
Darcy. For example, when Mr.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

example, Mr. Darcy is best friends with Mr. Bingley, who has a sister that really likes Mr. Darcy. Mr. Darcy likes Elizabeth, while Miss Bingley
dislikes Elizabeth. Then Jane is in love with Mr. Bingley as well as Miss Lucas, and Mrs. Hurst is the sister of Mr. Bingley and Miss Bingley. In
other words, Elizabeth has certain relationships with these people, and all the characters connect through friendships, relationships, or are family.
Then for the photos that she has are relevant to her traits. I drew nature scenes to portray the peace and calmness of Elizabeth. Nature can be
interpreted as free which relates to Elizabeth who likes to do things her way, freely. For example, instead of taking a coach or ride a horse, instead
Elizabeth said "'No, indeed. I do not wish to avoid the walk. The distance is nothing when one has a motive; only three miles."'(21). In other words,
Elizabeth prefers to endure the walk rather than taking the horses. This shows that Elizabeth makes her own choices and decisions for she likes to do

Bennet is a anxious, senseless, and woman, who is the mother of Elizabeth and her four sisters. While Mrs. Bennet has five unmarried daughters,
she tries to arrange a marriage between Charles Bingley and her eldest daughter Jane. Mrs. Bennet is so foolish that she would put her daughters
at risk just for the chance of a proposal, "...if she should die, it would be a comfort to know that it was all in pursuit if Mr. Bingley, and under your

greedy woman who will use anything as a weapon to tempt men, even her daughter Jane's illness, "She will be taken very good care of. As long as
she stays there , it is all very well. " (30) Austen exposes the flaws of Mrs. Bennet, to display a mother's view of marriage, which was a woman
should marry for money and social status not for happiness. Another character that illustrates satirical elements in Pride and Prejudice is Lydia

Elizabeth Bennet Individuality
Pride and Prejudice, a novel by Jane Austen published in 1813. It is, to this day, universally loved and revered. A classic, one may say. This tells the
story of the prejudice that occurred in the 19th century and the pride which kept lovers apart. The lovers in this story are Elizabeth Bennet and Mr.
Darcy. Elizabeth was a quick–witted girl, but her wits took her to make quick judgments. Mr. Darcy was a man born into wealth, with a strong ego.
They, however, put their differences behind them. The eighteenth century British novelist Laurence Sterne wrote, "Nobody, but he who has felt it, can
conceive what a plaguing thing it is to have a man's mind torn asunder by two projects of equal strength, both obstinately pulling in a contrary direction
at the same time." This story proves this quote... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She wanted to be expressive and take a stance, but in her time and age, it was unrealistic. A struggle she faced, for example, was when Jane was ill
at Netherfield Park. Elizabeth was torn between her sister, and being a proper lady. She didn't know whether to sit at home and wait, or run
through the muddy fields to her sister. Elizabeth's mother was against her going through fields as she said, "How can you be so silly, as to think of
such a thing, in all this dirt! You will not be fit to be seen when you get there."(Austen 24) Her mother did not want her to go, because it would look
very poorly on her behalf. Elizabeth however not caring about her reputation, was insistent on walking to Jane. Elizabeth did not want to conform to
society, ever. So when Collins asks for Elizabeth's hand in marriage, she, among the pressure from her family, promptly refused. To Elizabeth, Collins
was foolish and pompous, and she could stand to think to ever marry someone so humiliating. Even when Darcy proposes to her for the first time, she
refuses. Her hasty judgments led her to think that he was an arrogant man who only cared for his

Elizabeth Bennet is shown to be a very outspoken character throughout Pride and Prejudice. This trait of hers naturally leads her to unapologetically
challenge the values of Regency England in chapters 34 and 56 of the novel. Elizabeth challenges the views on marriage and status at the time of the
Regency era by acting completely against them and this rebellion is conveyed through various language techniques. Elizabeth's most significant point
of resisting the beliefs of Regency England happens when Darcy has just proposed to Elizabeth and she refuses the marriage. Elizabeth's resistance is
exhibited through caesura in "But I cannot – I have never desired your good opinion, and you have certainly bestowed it most unwillingly". In Regency

of characterisation in "He is a gentleman; I am a gentleman's daughter: so far we are equal." This is the first time in the novel Elizabeth has stood up
for herself and her family concerning their social class. Austen shows development in the character of Elizabeth through this characterisation which

Elizabeth Bennet Satire
Pride and Prejudice is a book that has great meaning, if the tone is understood. The story follows the main character, Elizabeth Bennet, as she deals with
issues of upbringing, financial problems, morality, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of the British Regency. Jane Austen points out the
flaws in human society during this time period. In Pride and Prejudice, Austen uses the tone of satire; this includes oodles of sarcasm, denouncing, and
irony, she uses these techniques of tone with not only the plot of the story but the characters as well. The biggest theme Austen focused on was the
silliness of women being expected to marry. In the book, Mrs. Bennet's hopes and dreams are set on all five of her daughters marrying, and if ... Show

During the beginning of the book, Elizabeth's confidence in her own judgments resulted in a poorly–made, preconceived idea of Mr. Darcy. Upon their
initial meeting, Mr. Darcy came off as a high–handed, arrogant man. Because of this, Elizabeth based her judgment of him on their first encounter. In
Chapter 3, after the two were acquainted, Darcy said to Mr. Bingley, "'She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me'" (13). This comment
made Elizabeth feel that she had been disrespected by Darcy, causing her to establish a poor judgment of him based on this rude remark he had made.
As the story continued Elizabeth's judgment remained unyielding. She was quick to believe anything that would maintain the idea that Mr. Darcy was
a cold man. In Chapter 16, Elizabeth meets a man named Mr. Wickham and quickly sees that the two have something in common: their hatred toward
Darcy. As Wickham and Elizabeth talked, Mr. Darcy became the topic of conversation. Wickham told Elizabeth a story establishing why he hates

Bingley leaves and does not contact Jane, she is disappointed. Elizabeth meets Mr. Wickham and is drawn to him. They converse and begin to like

Elizabeth Bennet Enlightenment
Elizabeth Bennet As An Enlightenment Figure
During the Regency Period of 19th century England, traditions and strict social standards characterized society. The lower class were inferior to the
wealthy, and the sentiment of male superiority suppressed the potential of women. However, these standards were challenged by the Age of
Enlightenment, which occurred prior to the Regency Period and inspired the use of independent thinking. Enlightenment figures "questioned traditional
authority and embraced the notion that humanity could be improved through rational change," therefore providing the impetus for others to diverge
from set customs (History.com Staff). InJane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet demonstrates the qualities of ... Show more content on

Initially, she has a tendency to prematurely judge a person's character and establish an opinion of them. Upon first meeting Mr. Darcy, she overhears
a distasteful conversation between him and Mr. Bingley, which leads her to assume that she has "no very cordial feelings towards him" (Austen 14).
Elizabeth's negative opinion of Mr. Darcy intensifies when Mr. Wickham tells her stories that appear to confirm his overly prideful demeanor. Mr.
Darcy, however, believes that Elizabeth is too rash in her judgements, and says, "I can readily believe [...] that reports may vary greatly with respect
to me; and I could wish Miss Bennet, that you were not to sketch my character at the present moment" (Austen 92). Darcy knows that Wickham's
stories are false, but Elizabeth's flaw initially prevents her from listening to his reasoning. She firmly turns down his first marriage proposal, claiming
that she has "every reason in the world to think ill of [him]" (Austen 186); however, in a subsequent letter, Darcy gives a thorough explanation
concerning Elizabeth's misgivings. After reading over his message multiple times, Elizabeth finally realizes her mistakes. She grows "absolutely
ashamed of herself," and admits, "Until this moment, I never knew myself" (Austen 201–202). Such profound self–awareness is not often demonstrated
by other characters, and Elizabeth breaks from the conventional way of thinking by learning how to accept and overcome her

Elizabeth Proctor Characteristics
Elizabeth Proctor "He have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him now!" Elizabeth Proctor said this at the end of The Crucible when her
husband John Proctor goes to hang. Elizabeth a very honest and loving mother of three boys, and wife to John Proctor. She was also a very religious
person that would never lie. The personality of Elizabeth Proctor is very similar to mine because we both portray the traits of being quiet, caring, and
a pushover. Elizabeth Proctor and myself both associate with being quiet. The way Elizabeth shows how she is quiet is when she is talking to her
husband. When she found out about her husband having an affair with Abigail Williams she kept a cold house, barely speaking more than one
word to him. A time I kept to myself was when I went to county chorus. The first day I didn't stray far from the people I knew even though there
were a ton of new people I could talk to. Another time was when I didn't have enough confidence to talk to a cute guy I saw at the store. I was way to
shy to go up to him so I missed my chance to talk to him and possibly get his number. Both myself and Elizabeth exhibit the trait of being quiet. ...

When Elizabeth got to talk to her husband John to try and talk him into confessing to witchcraft, she show'd him how much she cared about him
even after everything that's happened. She had told him that she supported him with whatever decision he made. The way that I'm a caring person is
that I'm a good listener. Any time I know one of my friends is upset I will call them or sit down and talk with them letting them spill everything that's
on their mind and I'll sit there and listen to all of it, not judging at all. Another way I'm caring is that I always put other people before myself. On my
birthday my friend was upset so I spent the day with her and we went to the movies then walked around the mall. The common trait between myself
and Elizabeth Proctor is

Elizabeth Bennet Archetypes

  • 1. Elizabeth Bennet Archetypes By diving deeper into literature, movies, and television series it becomes clear that characters and specific traits are repeating throughout the years. Archetypes are a base for countless characters throughout literature, the common traits of a character assist the audience into drawing conclusions about the character. Throughout the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen it becomes clear that Elizabeth Bennet is modeling the smart and moral young lady of this story, unlike her promiscuous and family shaming sister, Lydia, both women are fighting to find happiness. The typical good girl character is a young lady who is moral, smart, and makes the right choices for herself in life. Elizabeth Bennet embodies these traits and lives her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The traits of being smart, moral, and making the correct choices for herself and her own personal happiness seen in the main character, Leslie Knope. Knope works in the government and closely with the public, meaning being smart and moral are necessities in her character type. Knope mirrors Elizabeth in her search for happiness, despite all rules. Often times Knope puts her work first, as she was raised by her mother to do so, however she eventually realizes that family and friends should come before work, no matter what her mother believes. Elizabeth, also puts her happiness first by rejecting Mr. Collins' proposal, because she knew she wouldn't be happy with him. The archetype of being an indecent and easy woman is also represented in this show, by the character Tammy. Tammy is a librarian and is constantly trying to brainwash different men through sex. Lydia may not be as obvious about her promiscuity, but both characters share the archetype of being that type of woman. The archetypes of being a good girl and a bad girl has been and will continue to be repeated for countless years throughout numerous plot lines. In the vast majority of storylines they are full of archetypes, such as the good and bad girl characters that are applied in Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Austen employs these two archetypes to show that breaking rules can lead be freely and lead ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Elizabeth Proctor Conflicts The Crucible "The witch–hunt was not, however, a mere repression. It was also, and as importantly, a long overdue opportunity for everyone so inclined to publicly express his guilt and sin, under the cover of accusations against the victims." (Page 7 of Act One). These conflicts result and produce even more tragic occurrences. These conflicts are between either those have sinned and been accused – John Proctor, those who have been sinned against and accused out of jealousy and fear – Elizabeth Proctor, and those who conducted an act of rage, jealousy, ignorance, and hatred, as Abigail Williams had. The two relationships between the Proctors and then John and Abigail and the conflict that tie in with all three situations make up the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... John knows he did wrong and had repented his ways, while Abigail only wished to be with him and refused to repent or forget what happened between her and John. After John admits that he wants nothing to do with her, she stirs up a revenge plan and accuses both John and Abigail of dealings with the Devil. Through jealousy, revenge and resentment, Abigail cooks up chaos in Salem– the sort of chaos that could have been easily prevented considering the contributions to the event. The conflicts between Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail are quite evident in the fact that Elizabeth is fully aware of John's affair with Abigail. Abigail hates Elizabeth for firing her and taking her away from the close proximity to John. So, essentially, the conflict between the two derives from the love they both have for John, causing great animosity between the two. Elizabeth is conflictingly threatened by Abigail's youth and beauty and the assumption that she may still desire her husband. From that obsessive desire, Elizabeth's life, along with her husband's life, may be at stake. Clearly, because of Abigail's desire, Elizabeth was accused, causing John to involve himself in the case to save his wife, but then losing his one. John wants to get over his mistakes, to do just that he has decided to refuse Abigail's love. He is dealing with relationships with two women, which is a huge crime under the strict rules of the Puritans. In regards to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I assured him that there weren't no witchcraft and that it was just common dancing and nothing more. I went to the woods with Tituba and we danced in the forest. We danced as Tituba sang her Barbados songs it was only common dancing and nothing more, nothing bad came of it but my uncle he was sure there was more to it than mere dancing. It was early in the morning when we were dancing it was foggy and somewhat dark as we stood in the clearing of the forest so I can see how he may have gotten the idea that it was witchcraft as it follows the myths and stories that float around that of witchery. • 4. Essay Elizabeth Bennet She is witty, loyal, and clever but also impulsive, stubborn, and outspoken. She is Elizabeth Bennet. The protagonist in the famous Jane Austen novel 'Pride and Prejudice' remains to be one of the most famous women in English Literature to date. Girls everyday say that Elizabeth Bennet is such an inspiration. They say they want to be just like her or to at least be friends with her. Admittedly, she is a pretty kick butt character with arcs that have you rooting for her and supporting her questionable excursions. In the end, the readers just wanted the best for her so that she would be happy in the end. Remaining relevant for hundreds of years, Elizabeth Bennet is practically a role model for girls reading the book. What exactly is it that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Darcy, himself. From then her true colors start to shine across each page and she comes into herself fully. Darcy begins by ignoring her at a public dance and then further on for disturbing the possible link between Jane, her sister, and Charles Bingley. There is definite reasoning behind it but Elizabeth is quick to judge those she encountered making it an important part of her overcoming her obstacles to become the romantic of the novel. For a while the reader sits there as she judges these first impressions of Darcy and his actions so hard when all they can think about is how they are going to fall in love so hard at the end. Since her father is not wealthy enough to carry on his estate with no sons she practically must marry to get some money back to the Bennet's. Darcy starts to fall for her, because apparently how could you not, and proposes to marriage right away. He brings up their differences in class and how it would basically be a good investment to marry him. With Elizabeth's judgement, the reader wants to take her side since she is quick to read a situation and react in a way that present how she is feeling with ease. She's no often wrong so as the reader we like to think if she can do this, why can't we and it pushes us to this ideal version of ourselves modeled after her. • 5. Queen Elizabeth I : Queen Elizabeth I Queen Elizabeth I: Queen Elizabeth I was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Coming to rule in 1558, the Queen was now succeeding half–sister Mary I of England–– also known as "Bloody Mary". Elizabeth had been noted for a multitude of things during this reign. The survival in a time in which government was at its worst, accomplishing the greatest military victory in English history, and the ability to hold the throne for a stable forty–four–year reign are merely a few. These do not even come close to how the Queen was embedded in history as a great ruler. Due to the profound changes under Elizabeth I, this unique approach to ruling a newly constructed era is what led the Queen to be considered England's greatest monarch. Elizabeth, being a devout Protestant, had proposed to remove laws favoring Catholicism. Many factors had played parts in the reasoning to go against the Catholic religion. One mainly being that during Mary's reign Elizabeth was jailed due to being suspected of supporting Protestant rebels. Though much of that faithfulness came from the fact Catholic jurisdiction had not recognized her majesty's birth as legitimate. Even with being against the church, not once was there a fight. Only when threatened by extremists did the royal court get riled. Outcomes of this plan had resulted in a complicated and divided government. The top national bodies included the monarch, the Privy Council, and the Parliament. Each of these dealt with the ruling, advising, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Elizabeth Gristwood Analysis She was also well known for her acquisitive "explorations and political and commercial expansion, extended into Wales, Lowland Scotland, Ireland, and America" (Wagner. 1999, p. 100). When Elizabeth's accession took place in 1558, the English language was the language of government law, literature, and scholarship (Wagner. 1999, p. 101). The tales of her Majesty and love towards marriage not sitting well together is indeed a juicy story, told by Sarah Gristwood, in her book. During the time between 1565–1567 there was quite a tempest brewing, between, Elizabeth and Mary regarding one Robert Dudley, who was trying ungraciously, to get Elizabeth's attention and he hoped to influence her into marriage, but Elizabeth was no fool. She was born just three years prior to the universal female suffrage that was for everyone, including people outside the United State of America. Margaret went attended one of the best Universities in the world, Oxford yet, she was not allowed to be a part of the debate team, because she was a woman. Then, there is the fact that her first job, which was in her trained field of study science, she was a scientist for BX Plastics, but she did not receive equal pay for equal work, again because she was a woman. On every hand in the 1950s, Margaret ran into prejudice and arrogance against her because 'she was a woman' I know, I have said this repeatedly, for a good reason (p 79). During Elizabeth's time she experience bigotry and the men during her time, tried to marry her off, and showed contempt for her being a woman in power, now we see it again in the life and time of Margaret Thatcher. When Margaret was allowed to speak at the Conservative Association's annual general meeting a month after her adoption in 1949, she argued, about the Beveridge report of 1942, in this argument she pointed out the fact that women had specific skills in the matter of public affairs, she stressed the fact that women who ran her household knew how to secure the modern social security problem. • 7. Rivalry Of Elizabeth Rivalry between Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots Religion is a main reason why Elizabeth executed Mary. Evidence which supports this reason is that some English Catholics would have preferred Mary as Queen of England. This would have made Elizabeth feel as she would need to execute Mary because Mary gave Catholics a reason to rebel against Elizabeth. Elizabeth was a protestant queen and most Catholics preferred a queen of their own belief. Thus, this was the best time to rebel against Elizabeth and gain a new catholic queen who lead the country. All they had to do, was releasing her from imprisonment. An argument in support of this evidence is that in 1570 the Pope issued a Bull ordering. Catholics should disobey Elizabeth because she was heretic. Catholics must follow the Pope and believe in him as the legitimate head of church. McLaren describes that not solely the papal bull had consequences in the year 1570, but also James Stewart's assassination: If the near conjunction of the papal bull and the Northern Rebellion does not explain the change in character of English anti–Catholicism, 1570 still remains a key date in its career. • 9. Elizabeth Bennet Individualism The society of 18th century England was incredibly rigid and defined. There was little to no movement between classes and every person's role was clearly outlined. However, in the novel, Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy do not adhere to the typical behaviors of this society. Elizabeth is individualistic and opinionated while Darcy transcends class barriers. While both Elizabeth and Darcy stray from the social norm, through their love story and subsequent marriage, Austen shows that individualism should be rewarded. Due to Darcy's wealth, aloofness, and disdain for those beneath him, he "incarnates social tradition, the aristocracy, stability, and respect for the past" (Wilkes). Darcy exemplifies the highest rank in the social order and because of this, exhibits an air of superiority. While speaking to Sir William at the Lucas's party, Darcy states that he is "fond of superior society" (Austen, 28). This shows that Darcy would rather not interact with people in the lower classes, which serves as an obstacle toward his eventual engagement to Elizabeth. His tendencies toward arrogance and self–importance are not typical to people such as the Bennet's. Darcy's contempt for the lower classes alienate him from Elizabeth. While expressing his love for her, he says, "In vain I have struggled. It will not do" (Austen, 285). This suggests that Darcy did not want to love Elizabeth because of her status. Darcy is attracted to Elizabeth because of her unusual behavior, however, in his first proposal to her, he shows that he has tried to suppress his feelings. Darcy knows that he loves her, yet he tried to convince himself that he does not have any feelings towards her, because he believes that she is beneath him. This stems back to his traditional values. In reality, these events followed somewhat of a different course. Elizabeth was suspected of plotting the reinstatement of Protestantism with a French ambassador and other Protestant activists, and Mary's advisors suggested that Elizabeth be put under surveillance, as it might be then possible to find reasons for sending her to the tower. Investigations proceeded, and Elizabeth was finally sent to the tower, where she was held for two months in a suite of four rooms, where only her servants could visit her. This is proven when she "related to Jane the next day what had passed between Mr. Wickham and herself" even though she kept the exchange secret from everyone else and Jane "listened with astonishment and concern" (Austen 73). • 27. Elizabeth Bennet Individuality Pride and Prejudice, a novel by Jane Austen published in 1813. It is, to this day, universally loved and revered. A classic, one may say. This tells the story of the prejudice that occurred in the 19th century and the pride which kept lovers apart. The lovers in this story are Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. Elizabeth was a quick–witted girl, but her wits took her to make quick judgments. Mr. Darcy was a man born into wealth, with a strong ego. They, however, put their differences behind them. The eighteenth century British novelist Laurence Sterne wrote, "Nobody, but he who has felt it, can conceive what a plaguing thing it is to have a man's mind torn asunder by two projects of equal strength, both obstinately pulling in a contrary direction at the same time." This story proves this quote... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She wanted to be expressive and take a stance, but in her time and age, it was unrealistic. A struggle she faced, for example, was when Jane was ill at Netherfield Park. Elizabeth was torn between her sister, and being a proper lady. She didn't know whether to sit at home and wait, or run through the muddy fields to her sister. Elizabeth's mother was against her going through fields as she said, "How can you be so silly, as to think of such a thing, in all this dirt! You will not be fit to be seen when you get there."(Austen 24) Her mother did not want her to go, because it would look very poorly on her behalf. Elizabeth however not caring about her reputation, was insistent on walking to Jane. Elizabeth did not want to conform to society, ever. So when Collins asks for Elizabeth's hand in marriage, she, among the pressure from her family, promptly refused. To Elizabeth, Collins was foolish and pompous, and she could stand to think to ever marry someone so humiliating. Even when Darcy proposes to her for the first time, she refuses. • 29. Elizabeth Bennet Quotes Elizabeth Bennet is shown to be a very outspoken character throughout Pride and Prejudice. This trait of hers naturally leads her to unapologetically challenge the values of Regency England in chapters 34 and 56 of the novel. Elizabeth challenges the views on marriage and status at the time of the Regency era by acting completely against them and this rebellion is conveyed through various language techniques. Elizabeth's most significant point of resisting the beliefs of Regency England happens when Darcy has just proposed to Elizabeth and she refuses the marriage. Elizabeth's resistance is exhibited through caesura in "But I cannot – I have never desired your good opinion, and you have certainly bestowed it most unwillingly". In Regency England, ... Elizabeth challenges social class values through Austen's use of characterisation in "He is a gentleman; I am a gentleman's daughter: so far we are equal." This is the first time in the novel Elizabeth has stood up for herself and her family concerning their social class. Austen shows development in the character of Elizabeth through this characterisation which defines the fiery and independent woman that Elizabeth has become. • 30. Elizabeth Bennet Satire Pride and Prejudice is a book that has great meaning, if the tone is understood. The story follows the main character, Elizabeth Bennet, as she deals with issues of upbringing, financial problems, morality, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of the British Regency. Jane Austen points out the flaws in human society during this time period. In Pride and Prejudice, Austen uses the tone of satire; this includes oodles of sarcasm, denouncing, and irony, she uses these techniques of tone with not only the plot of the story but the characters as well. The biggest theme Austen focused on was the silliness of women being expected to marry. In the book, Mrs. Bennet's hopes and dreams are set on all five of her daughters marrying, and if ... Although, this was totally inappropriate and humorous, it is ironic she is the only financially independent women in the whole novel. Pride and Prejudice shows the humanistic flaws and the reality of this era, and while doing so it is also humorous. Austen speaks to the audience through Elizabeth, as she explains society should accept marriage for love and not marriage being defined through social classes. When she wore her gladiator sandals she felt like an ancient warrior leaving home and making their way to battle with a full heart and steady pace. On the other end, the gladiators could be wonderfully impractical on her escapades. There was the day she had stopped along a path of trees to recline against a well–supported base. One hand bracing one of the other branches around her, one knee bent to keep the scrappy Gurung's off the ground, one long white gossamer dress from Chanel cascaded around her. Upon their initial meeting, Mr. Darcy came off as a high–handed, arrogant man. Because of this, Elizabeth based her judgment of him on their first encounter. In Chapter 3, after the two were acquainted, Darcy said to Mr. Bingley, "'She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me'" (13). This comment made Elizabeth feel that she had been disrespected by Darcy, causing her to establish a poor judgment of him based on this rude remark he had made. As the story continued Elizabeth's judgment remained unyielding. She was quick to believe anything that would maintain the idea that Mr. Darcy was a cold man. In Chapter 16, Elizabeth meets a man named Mr. Wickham and quickly sees that the two have something in common: their hatred toward Darcy. As Wickham and Elizabeth talked, Mr. Darcy became the topic of conversation. Upon first meeting Mr. Darcy, she overhears a distasteful conversation between him and Mr. Bingley, which leads her to assume that she has "no very cordial feelings towards him" (Austen 14). Elizabeth's negative opinion of Mr. Darcy intensifies when Mr. Wickham tells her stories that appear to confirm his overly prideful demeanor. Mr. Darcy, however, believes that Elizabeth is too rash in her judgements, and says, "I can readily believe [...] that reports may vary greatly with respect to me; and I could wish Miss Bennet, that you were not to sketch my character at the present moment" (Austen 92). Darcy knows that Wickham's stories are false, but Elizabeth's flaw initially prevents her from listening to his reasoning. She firmly turns down his first marriage proposal, claiming that she has "every reason in the world to think ill of [him]" (Austen 186); however, in a subsequent letter, Darcy gives a thorough explanation concerning Elizabeth's misgivings. After reading over his message multiple times, Elizabeth finally realizes her mistakes. She grows "absolutely ashamed of herself," and admits, "Until this moment, I never knew myself" (Austen 201–202).
