from the Bible about the
fall of men and describe it
in ‘ Paradise Lost’
• Famous for…
• 1) “paradise lost”
• 2) “paradise regained”
• 3) “samson agonist”
3. Background……
• God created the universe and his best creation
Adam and Eve to live in.
• Satan, the fallen , attempts to destroy the
hierarchy of heaven through his rebellion, so he
decide to spoil the best creation of god.
• Satan comes as a mist and then enters into the
serpant.
• Argumentative Discourse between Eve and
Adam about dividing labor and finally Eve wins.
4. Beauty of eve
• Satan gets her attention and begins flattering
her beauty.
• “wonder not, sovran Mistress,
Thy looks, the heaven of mildness, with disdain
-Fairest resemblance of thy Maker fair”
Eve is amazed, mesmorized at serpant’s power
to speak like man and his reason.
5. Temptation scene
Satan in the form of
serpant, searches for the
couple, and delighted to
find Eve alone
Satan forgets his
revengeful ideas and
lost in the beauty of Eve
But burning hell of
jealousy encourages him
to revenge, hate and
envy
6. Eve looks serpant…
Amazes Eve says,
“How cams’t thou speakable of mute, and how
To me so friendly grown, above the rest
Of brutal kind, that daily are in sight?”
Eve asks him that from where he got his
power?
7. Satan’s flattery …of Eve
• He replied that,
“Empress of this fair world, resplendent Eve,
I was at first as other beast.
But A goodly Tree far distant to behold, loaden with
fruits of fairest colour smixt, Ruddy and Gold.
Of tasting that fair Apples I resolv’d
Means he tells her in enticing language that he gained
the speech and intellect by eating the savory fruit
of one of the tree in the garden.
8. Eve’s argument
Eve argued that God has refused to eat from
this tree.
……..thus Eve, yet sinless: -: “of the fruit
Of each tree in the garden we may eat;
But of the fruit of this fair, tree amidst
The garden, God hath said, “ye shall not eat
Thereof, nor shall you touch it, lest ye die.”
9. Satan’s argument
• But satan persist that,
Queen of this Universe ! Do not believe
Those rigid threats of death. Ye shall not die.
satan argues that God actually want them to
eat from the tree. Satan says that God forbids
it only because he wants them to show their
independence.
10. Eve now seriously tempted...
• Eve is now seriously tempted.
• The flattery has made her desire to know
more .
• She reasoned that God claimed that eating
from this tree meant death, but the serpant
ate and not only does he still live, but can
speak and think.
• God would have no reason to forbid the fruit
unless it were powerful.
11. • ……..Eve thinks, and seeing it right
before her eyes makes all of the
warnings seems exaggerated
• It looks so perfect to Eve
“so saying, her rash hand in evil hour
Forth reaching to the fruit, she plucked,
she eat”
“Earth felt wound, and
Nature from her seat,
Sighing through all her
works,gave signs of
woe
THAT ALL WAS LOST”
