2. Close up
In 50 Cent’s ‘window shopper’ music
video, one of the first scenes the
audience is introduced to is a close up of
the artists face. I think the use of a close
up is effective as 50 cent is directly
addressing the camera, engaging the
audience in the music video which keeps
them interested. This also draws more
attention to the artist as the audience will
feel they are being directly looked at by
him. This links with the uses and
gratifications theory as the target
audience may feel a relationship forming
between themselves and the artist.
3. Low angle mid shot
This shot was taken from 50 Cent’s
‘Candy shop and is effective as it leads
the audience to feel as though they are
looking up to the artist. This is also
effective as it emphasises the
importance of the protagonist. The use
of this camera shot also keeps the
audience interested as the low angle
shot allows them to see the car the
artist is in, this is effective as it
highlights the luxury lifestyle the artist
is living which the target audience will
find appealing as they aspire to be like
50 Cent.
4. Establishing shotThis establishing shot was taken from 50
Cent’s ‘In Da Club’. An establishing shot
in usually the first shot the audience is
introduced to, however this this
establishing shot comes just after the
first scene. This shot allows the
audience to see where the action is
taking place, this shot is effective as
shows the artists standing almost many
other people. This shot conveys how
small the artist is when surrounded with
people, this also highlights how the
artist doesn’t see him self a superior in
comparison to other people.
5. Extreme wide shot
This shot was taken from 50 Cent’s ‘In Da
Club’. This wide shot is effective and
immediately gets the audience thinking
about the music video as a whole. I think this
shot is effective as it highlights the
dangerous violent side of the artist. This is
because the video it based on the artist is
jail. Mise en scene of the shot shows the
artist to be locked up in the middle of
nowhere which can relate to the rap culture
as many artists started off from nowhere.
The use of this extreme wide/long shot is
also effective as it highlights how small the
artist is in comparison to the large empty
background as well as the world. This shot
also shows a single road which could suggest
there is only one way in and out again
reinforcing the fact that it is in the middle of
nowhere.
6. Medium Long shotThis shot was taken from 50 Cent’s music
video ‘wanksa’. This shot is also recognised at
the three-quarters shot. This shot allows the
audience to see everything of the artist up to
their knees. This shot is effective at it shows
the majority of the artist as well as the
surroundings. This shot is also effective as it
allows the audience to clearly see the
costume as well as expensive jewellery that
the artist is wearing. The artist also appears
to have a women beside him which relates to
Laura Mulvery’s male gaze theory as her
costume is revealing, this is effective at it
would appeal to the younger male target
audience. The artist is also directly looking at
the camera which engages the target
audience ensuring they stay interested.
