Pierce The Veil
Bulls in the Bronx
Video analysis
Dani Gordon
The artist and the song title are introduced at the beginning
of the video. This is something I hadn't really noticed in other
videos and makes it look more like a moving opening than the
beginning of a music video. This could have been done to
show the audience that this will be a video with a story
included in it rather than just a performance video. The font
used for the text reminds me of something you would see in
an old film, so this could link with the theme of the story
The video is both performance and narrative.
The video constantly jumps from scenes with
the actors in to scenes with the band
performing ,close up of the instruments, long
shot of the whole band performing, long shots
of just one member or extreme close ups of
the singer are all used while the band are
performing to make it more interesting for the
viewer
Early on in the video the audience can clearly see who the main characters
will be
• The teenage boy
•The teenage girl
•The teenage girl’s father
The father is shown as a mainly man as the first time the audience see him
he is working on a car. You can also assume the father and daughter have a
close relationship as she is seen greeting him as she walks up to the house
A shot of the whole band is also used early on so the audience can see
who they are
The girl looks like a typically daddy’s girl at the start
of the video, but then goes up to her room taking
off her glasses, undoing her hair, pulling off a
‘daddy’s girl’ necklace, wearing a red top, pulling it
down to expose her cleavage and applying red
lipstick. All of this makes her appear older and gives
her sex appeal. There are close ups of her pulling off
the necklace and off the lipstick to show how the
character is changing
The story that goes along with the video
is a forbidden love story. The boy can be
seen sneaking around the back of the
house, spraying himself with body spray
and climbing up a ladder to the girls
bedroom. The low angle shot of the
ladder shows the audience that he plans
on climbing up to her window. The close
up of his foot while he is climbing tell the
audience what he is doing without having
to show a long shot of him climbing. This
leads to a two shot of them kissing
During one part of the video the girl is dressed as a flamenco
dancer and the boy as a bull fighter. The girl is dancing around
him to the beat of the music and there are close ups of
someone playing the drums and her feet moving. The girl pins
a love heart will bull horns going through it to the boys jacket
then kisses him on the cheek before turning away. The boy
turns around to see a angry bull. The bull is a representation of
the girls father.
The smoke from the bull quickly fades and shows the dad
pushing the boy back on the bed, this makes the father appear
bull like as the boy is pushed back the same way a bull fighter is
pushed back by a bull. There are over the shoulder shots of him
shouting at the boy. The shots are high angled so make the boy
appear weak and vulnerable next to the father. The boy is chased
out the house and continues to run down the street. Red lipstick
can be seen smeared over his face. At the end of the video the
pin can be seen on his jacket again
