Desert Dbq Analysis
After reading through the Document Based Question I found out some cool things about the Desert such as their physical features, their impacts on
humans, and the amount of time they have surfaced the Earth. If you did not know, a Desert is a very dry place that is not only lonely but also
dangerous. The Desert is also waterless and has no vegetation. While reading through the Document Based Question I found out that Desert's can be
described by their physical features, they can be discussed by their impact on humans, and can be identified by their past, present, and future. While

Desert's impact humans by Something called Desertification, Desertification is when fertile land becomes Desert. " ... Desertification directly affects
1.2 billion people" (Doc 3). This shows that Desert's affect people badly. Desert's are dangerous as they can kill plants and animals. " But even small
changes in temperature or precipitation could drastically impact plants and animals living in the Desert." (Internet). This shows that small changes in
the Desert can affect a lot of living things. To recapitulate, Desert's can be discussed by their impacts on humans. While reading through the
Document Based Question I found out that Desert's can be identified by their past, present, and future. Desert's have been around for a long time. "
Did not begin until the 7th century" (Doc 2). This shows that Desert's have been a thing in society since the 7th century. Desert's have been around
for over millions of years. " The arid Sahara may have existed at least 7 million years ago." (Internet). This shows how long Desert's truly have been

Saguaro: The Sahara Desert
There are roughly 8.7 million known species of plants and animals distributed all over the world. However, there are fewer plant and animal species
found in hot desert areas due to the climate and landform. Living under the arid evnironment is typically difficult because of the extreme climate, the
fluctuation of temperature between night and day is enormous, and sandstorms occur frequently. As well as this, there are very few nutritional
substances for survival. However, the biggest challenge for living things in the hot desert is most likely the dry weather and lack of rain. The annual
rainfall is below 25 mm in the Sahara Desert, the world's biggest desert, compared with the Amazon rainforest which has an average precipitation of
1250 to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, the sandstorms come frequently due to the soil issue and the water resource is limited. Those harsh conditions contribute a real tough
challenge for living in the hot desert, but the desert animals have their own way to survive and succeed. As the water is the basis of life, the first
issue that desert animals need to face is the lack of water. Animals have figured out their way to gain enough water for their diet. Some animals
make water on their own; Merriam's kangaroo rats do not drink water for their entire life, they eat high carbohydrate seeds so that does not need too
much water to process and their faeces is really dry.5 For animals do not have this kind of special function in their metabolic system, like kit foxes
and snakes, gain water directly from the plants they eat. Succulent plants in desert usually have thick leaves to store moisture but their shorn is not as
obvious as catic; without the protection, animals can eat the prey easily. The Texas horned lizards have magical skin structure for collecting rainwater.
The desert animals do not only need to obtain water, but also need to reduce lost of water by avoiding evaporation. The Texas horned lizards have
thick skin to block the moisture from evaporating to the

Ecosystems
Question: What management strategies have been implemented in response to the resilience and vulnerability of a selected ecosystem? The Mojave
Desert is a world famous desert that occupies a signiŠæĀ¬Šƒcant amount of California and smaller parts in surrounding states. Covering thousands of
square kilometers, the ecosystems can range from 100 meters below sea level up to 2000 meters above sea level. The biophysical interactions within
these ecosystems such as earth movements, soil formation, weather and climate lead to very diverse environments, along with the many biotic factors.
With the rapidly increasing impacts of human uses, pollution and urban sprawl the Mojave Desert is consistently becoming more damaged, altered and

This animal thrives as it is highly adaptable, therefore it is perfect for the harshness of the Mojave Desert. Mojave Food Chain
The Plants of the Desert The brittle bush is a bush that grows across most of the Mojave Desert and from March to June it thrives turning the desert
yellow. Growing to around ŠæĀ¬Šƒve foot these plants are suited to this environment as they have a matt of short hairs that cover all the leaves. These
hairs act as an insulating layer against hot and cold, and they also trap moisture. Common saltbush is a grayish white shrub that grows to be
around a meter tall. They are not a pretty plant, but are well adapted to living in dry, alkaline environments. It has scales on the leaves to conserve
water, although it doesn't like to hold large amounts of water. Also in droughts it has the ability to drop all leaves and see the drought through. The
Joshua Tree mainly grows in the Joshua Tree National Park and is only found in the Mojave Desert. With a life span of 200 years, and a maximum
height of just over 12 meters this tree also has 2 root systems. One root systems buries deep and stores water in large bulbs up to 10 meters
underground. The other root system is shallow and gathers nutrients. The spiny leaf system is turned up wards in order to catch any moisture in the air.

Sonoran Desert Ecosystem Lab Report
There are different sorts of environments scattered over the earth, but what and where are they? In World Biodiversity Expedition, the reader is to
collect data about these organisms and the environment they are settled at. A biome is often mistaken as an ecosystem, however, it is defined by
nonā€“living factors such as climate, soils, and vegetation. This unit helped me understand more clearly that there are so many organisms that I did not
know anything about. I learned a lot from this specific unit when it comes to discoverying animals and organisms that I did not know exist.
Firstly, we are going to survey life and environments at the Sonoran Desert with temperatures reaching 118Š²ā€žā€° with over 16 inches of rain each year

The Blue whale has two flippers that are close the chest along with two blowholes that make navigating the ocean better. The Blue whale is the largest
animal known to man with lengths and width of 29.9 meters. Whales bodies coloration is greyā€“white on the ventral side while the dorsal side is
blueā€“gray. Nearly 2,000ā€“9,000 pounds of Krill can fill a fully grown Blue whale daily, nearly 8,000 pounds of Krill is eaten during the whales peak
consumption period. The next organism I identified is the Antartctic krill that is 6 centimeters in length. This animals is consumed by many marine
animals such as the Blue whale, but what does the krill eat? The Antartctic krill consumes phytoplankton which is a componet of the Plankton family.
Although the krill is transparent, it has coloration such as red, pink, yellow and blue.
In conclusion, one can see that there are organisms that they may not have known exist or know anything about. This unit takes the reader around the

Desert Desert Environment
The deserts of central Australia make up a unique ecoregion. As it may be properly assumed, an arid desert environment is not easy to adapt to. Many
different species, including birds, reptiles, mammals, and various plants are able to thrive in such conditions. Human impacts on the island continent
have interrupted the success of some of these species. One group of species that have been very negatively impacted by human interaction are small
digging mammals. These mammals are typically small and almost rodentā€“like. Although small, digging mammals, such as Macrotis lagotis (the Greater
Bilby), have a large impact on the vegetation biodiversity of the ecoregion. They use their front paws to dig into the ground while they search for food.
In the process, diggings capture organic matter, provide habitat for a diversity of microscopic and macroscopic organisms, and increase nutrient
cycling. Diggings also capture plant seeds, increasing seedling germination, recruitment, and plant growth. The overall effect of mammal diggings is
therefore increased plant vigor and resilience, increased biodiversity and consequently improved ecosystem functioning (Fleming et al 2014). Due to
various impacts by human, these small mammals have quickly been declining. The large impact humans have had on the small mammals is the
introduction of invasive species. Felis catus (feral cat) and Vulpes vulpes (fox) are overpopulated invaders who prey on species such as Macrotis lagotis
and other small

Essay about Sun Tzu vs. The Wisdom of the Desert
Sun Tzu vs. The Wisdom of the Desert In the many forms it may take, conflict has been with the human race since the beginning of time. Conflict may
occur within the self or with other; it has caused wars and created strife throughout whole countries as well as in the lives of individuals. The world has
never not known conflict, yet many still seem to be distraught when it occurs in their realm. Conquering conflict then seems to be the conflict itself.
Whether the conflict is spiritual or militaristic, resolving and conquering it sometimes uses the same tactics. The Art of Warand The Wisdom of the
Desert are two books that, though their audiences may lean in opposite directions, the theme of conquering conflict is at the heart of ... Show more

When speaking of tactics, Sun Tzu wrote:
He wins his battles by making no mistakes. Making no mistakes is what establishes the certainty of victory, for it means conquering an enemy that is
already defeated. (Clavell 1983, 7)
So if the commander is thoroughly able to carry out his plans, he will have beaten the enemy before stepping onto the battlefield. Sun Tzu argued
that success was in the hands of the commander since, "the consummate leader cultivates the Moral Law and strictly adheres to method and
discipline; thus it is in his power to control success." (Clavell 1983, 20) Strategy is key to success, not just in war but in any aspect of life. The
monks who lived in lived in the desert felt strategy was important, but used it in an entirely different context. Their strategy was to avoid conflict at
all costs and if it did occur, then it should be resolved peacefully. At the same that they advocated peace, the desert fathers also felt the conflict with
evil should be dealt with actively. In his book The Wisdom of the Desert,Thomas Merton wrote:
The saints of the desert were enemies of every subtle or gross expedient by which 'the spiritual man' contrives to bully those he thinks inferior to
himself, thus gratifying his own ego. They had renounced everything that savored of punishment and revenge, however

PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT
UTEP Dinner Theatre
A Theatre Report by Thomas Sanchez. (Tue/Thu 12ā€“1:20) On Oct. 5, 2016 I attended the UTEP Dinner Theatre's performance of Priscilla Queen of
The Desert. Which is based on a book and movie by Stephan Elliott and Allen Scott. The play's overall theme revolves around the lives of
performing show business Drag Queens, and the overall concept of human understanding. The play was produced and directed by Gregory L.
Taylor, and performed by a hulled cast of both young and old that really did shine. "Tick," played by Jonathon Contreras, who I would place as the
protagonist of the play has found himself in quite the pickle, aside from that he is also getting a gig.. His wife Marion, although totally okay with his
Drag Queen lifestyle, has had enough. She wants him to perform at her casino in central Australia; which is a ways off from Tick's Sydney. The
real pickle is when we find out about Tick's son. Marion wants Tick to come visit his son and try to start some sort of communication with him.
Bernadette, performed by Jay Stratton, is an old(er) drag Queen who knows the ropes and quickly is enlisted for the trip to Alice Springs, Australia.
Bernadette feels iffy, but sure of herself and her performing abilities, that is until Tick relays the news that someone by the name of Adam/Felicia will
be joining them. In a huge hail of colorful glitter bombs we are introduced to Felicia, played by Allen Thompson. To add to the already

Deserts cover 1,371,000 square kilometres (18%) of Australia's mainland. Deserts & their arid climatic conditions are generally found in the central
west & interior lowlands of the continent. There are ten deserts in Australia: the Great Victoria Desert, the Great Sandy Desert, Tanami Desert, Simpson

The area is so underpopulated there is little direct human threat apart from overā€“grazing of cattle & farming operations. Predation from feral cats &
foxes is a direct cause of the decline in the deserts Bilby population, habitat loss also plays another key role.
The escape or deliberate release of domestic cats led to a freeā€“living population, they are now found on the entire continent of Australia; Researchers
have found the Northern Territory's feral cat population exceeds 100,000; they kill an estimated amount of 3.65 million small native animals a year.
Feral camels were originally imported into Australia from India, Afghanistan & Arabia for use in construction during colonisation of parts of central &
Western Australia. The population now exceeds 1 million. Camels ingest 80% of the plant species available leaving little of local indigenous people or
native herbivorous fauna. Their soft padded feet mean they don't erode the earth like feral horses or cattle however they can destabilise duneā€“crests

The Desert Tortoise Essay
The battle between the federal governments, Bureau of Land Management and Cliven Bundy began back in the 1990 's. For several years the
problems between the Bundy family and the BLM went unnoticed until a protest occurred in April of 2014 over confiscated cattle. In Early April of
2014, the BLM rounded up Mr. Bundy 's cattle and took them away, leaving him with nothing to his name and no way to make a living. All this was
done in the name of a tortoise population which has been slowly declining in population numbers for several decades sense the wild west had been
cultivated. While the Center for Biological Conservation believe the desert tortoise is negatively impacted by grazing cattle studies suggest the
stability of the desert tortoise comes from their symbiotic relationship with grazing cattle. Many questioned if Cliven Budy was justified in his actions,
or if the BLM should have acted with more force against Bundy. Though some say he has acted unlawfully, I believe Cliven Bundy 's actions were
necessary to insure the wellbeing of his livelihood. Furthermore, the US government should have attempted to collaborate or compromise with Bundy
before confiscating his cattle. Americans have a right to object to laws they do not support. The U.S Bill of Rights clearly outlines the rights all
American citizens have to safety, security, fair judicial sentencing and freedoms of speech, religion and even gun ownership. Specially Amendment one

How the Simulation Will Unfold
You will be notified of your assignment to a team prior to the start of the exercise. Although the exercise does not take place until Week 4, this gives
you several weeks to establish a communication protocol among team members. This is important so that when we start Week 4 and the simulation,
you are ready to go. There is a collaboration phase that requires you discuss the exercise and reach consensus as a team. If you can't communicate with
each other, then you can't fully participate in the exercise.
This exercise will proceed in three phases. Each phase has a distinct start and stop time. I have also created a suggested timeline for accomplishing the
important steps in this exercise. The timetable can be found at the end of this document.

Descriptive Essay On A Trip To The Desert
We were in the middle of the desert, basically having no sense of direction whatsoever. Riding down the coastline of a twentyā€“mile island off the coast
of Venezuela. Not knowing where to go was an issue but my brother, Ben, and I were on the ATV zooming through the desert seeing various attractions
throughout the trip. Watching animals run everywhere, experiencing the views of little beaches with huge waves it was like a dream come true.
One morning my dad and I woke up in our hotel room watching the glorious sunrise and were quietly walking down the hallway of the hotel to go to
the lobby. In the lobby, there were these huge advertisement banners hanging up that said, "Take a roll through the desert." There were pictures of
people riding ATV's in the desert so we decided to go on an adventure.
My mom, dad, brother, and I were all putting sunscreen on, head to toe like we showered in it while we were waiting for the cab to pick us up to
go pick up the ATV's. Once the cab got to the hotel, we all had to stuff ourselves and our belongings in it because it was one of those mini cars that
only had room for three people, but we were four people not including the driver. At the ATV Rental place, we got sized for helmets and the ATV. My
brother and I were not old enough to drive the ATV so my brother and my father went together while mymother and I went together. Before you know
it, we were out and about zooming through the streets of Aruba to get the California Lighthouse which

Jesus Went Into The Desert Too
Jesus Went Into the Desert Too
Beth Alvarado is notably known for her short story "Emily's Exit". The use of religion sets the tone, and catches the eye of many readers in the essay.
Religion is the belief and worshipping of a preeminent being, while faith is the trust of this preeminent being, not based on truth. Those of a Christian
faith, therefore, have a belief in this greater being who is known as God. They believe the claim that life is an endowment from God, and that once we
die, we continue to live for evermore in heaven. Through close reading, It was clear that the author, Alvarado, wanted to create a faintly disturbing
story full of "tension and anxiety" (Alvarado, n.d.). Religion, often times associated with death and despair, was used in the writing of "Emily's Exit"
to depict a story of dark suffering, "evoke images and emotion..." (Alvarado, n.d.), and force the audience into understanding the seriousness and the
severity of the events that happen.
Religion is an unā€“humorous matter to many people and their faith in God is unbreakable. They couldn't conceptualize a life without God. In "Emily's
Exit", once Emily disappeared, her mother "... became a Buddhist. It was the only way she could deal with it" (Alvarado, 2006, p. 428). This
exemplifies how Alvarado used religion to demonstrate the deepā€“seriousness of the situation. It is assumed that, just like Emily, her mother was a
believer in Christianity as well. The action of Emily's mom dropping her religion, and

Desert Biome : The Desert And The Sahara Desert
Biomes
Introduction
All biomes have a special features that make them all interesting.
A biome is a naturally recurring place, like the desert or the rainforest.
Desert ā€“The desert biome is a huge biome. It covers Š²ā€¦ā€¢ of the Earth's surface. There is two main types of desert biomeā€“ the hot and the cold. The
rainfall is very lowā€“ 8ā€“13 centimetres per annum. The plants are minimal because it is always hard to find and store water and it is a very tough
environment to grow in. Antarctica is the largest cold biome covered in ice and snow. The largest hot biome in the whole world is the Sahara desert,
which is in Africa.
Savannaā€“ A Savanna has a very hot season and a very wet season. The savanna is mostly dry grass and shrubs. This means that there are lots of
grazing animals who eat the grasses. Savannas mostly occur Africa, Australia, India and South America. The African Savanna is the largest of the
Savannas covering nearly half of Africa. The average temperature is 20ā€“30 degrees celsius. The normal rainfall is around 25ā€“75 centimetres per year.
Tropical rainforestā€“Tropical rainforests balance the world's climate. They help to balance climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide. The tropical
rainforest is very wet with 200ā€“1000 cm of rain per year. With this much rain the humidity is rather highā€“ 77%ā€“88%. The temperature is 21ā€“30
degrees celsius. All this makes the tropical rainforest a very lush and beautiful.

Desertsā€“ typically known as very hot, dry places, such as the Sahara Desert in Africa. However, there is a different type of desert that is found all
over the United States, and people reside in them every day. These deserts can be cold, hot, rainy, or dry, as they are not identified based on climate
and nature. Instead of lacking rainfall and vegetation, as normal deserts do, they lack something elseā€“ access to healthy foods.
These deserts are known as food deserts, where residents do not have easy access to fresh fruits, vegetables, and other wholesome foods. Unlike

approximately 9%. In addition, around threeā€“fourths of those tracts are in urban environments, while the other fourth are rural. Approximately 13.6
people live in these areas, and are suffering from food insecurity (Wright, Donley, Gualtieri, & Strickhouser, 2016). Food insecurity is when there is

The Long Side Of Deserts
When people think of deserts, they usually think, how long will I be able to survive? Usually, that time is very short because the wind is constantly
moving sand dunes and covering landmarks. People also underestimate the weather in deserts. They either don't wear enough clothes or they wear
too many clothes. Although this extreme heat means there is not a ton of water or food, many people in the world actually like and prefer to live
their entire lives in deserts all around the world. These people don't think of it as no food or water, they think of it as a challenge to get their food and
water for that day and then they repeat the next day.
Location
Deserts can be found in every continent except for Antarctica. Although there are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Climate In most deserts, it's usually around 120 degrees fahrenheit during the day and only gets down to 70 degrees fahrenheit during the night. Most
deserts get less than 10 inches of rain every year, but some deserts get even less than that. The wind is constantly blowing in deserts. The wind speed
in deserts is annually around 80 miles per hour. The wind is the main reason that so many people get lost in deserts, because it is always reshaping
sand dunes and covering up landmarks with sand (Johansson, 14ā€“16).
Landforms
While most animals get their water from cactus, there are still many that have to get their water from oases. Not every animal in the desert can go to the
same cactus and not be eaten by predators. They also don't think about a group of predators that will take over a cactus and take all of the water
for themselves, although this is a very unlikely event it could still very easily happen. The downside from drinking from oases is that when the
wind starts to pick up and then blows a ton of sand into the oases. Even though it would take a while this could very well happen too and the without
water the prey would die off, with no prey means no food for the predators and with no food the predators would die off leaving the deserts full of
only plants (Wilkins, 9).
Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is used for plants and animals to have food. The plants roots bring in the water from the soil.

Desert Places by Robert Frost
Snow falling and night falling fast, oh, fast
In a field I looked into going past,
And the ground almost covered smooth in snow,
But a few weeds and stubble showing last. The woods around it have it ā€“ it is theirs.
All animals are smothered in their lairs.
I am too absentā€“spirited to count;
The loneliness includes me unawares.
And lonely as it is, that loneliness
Will be more lonely ere it will be less ā€“
A blanker whiteness of benighted snow
With no expression, nothing to express.

In line twelve, the imagery of depression and absence of identity is furthermore supported when the speaker compares himself to the snow to say 'With
no expression, nothing to express' (12) mentioning his lack of identity and him falling into loneliness.
The fourth and last stanza is where the speaker is most confident. The word 'scare' is mentioned twice in this stanza and it denotes fear.
In the first line of the fourth stanza the speaker says he worries no more of empty and lonely spaces. The word 'star' denotes space, but it also
connotes to an example of loneliness 'where no human race is.' (14) The speaker does not coward anymore of lonely empty spaces, he does not need
empty fields covered with formless snow and space filled with loneliness to scare him; it's already inside of him. The last line of the poem 'To scare
myself with my own desert places,' (16) contain an image which displays Frost's thought that fear comes from within oneself rather than without.

Desert Biome Diary Essay
Diary of a Naturalist Dear Diary,
Today, I investigated the incredible desert biome. The two I'm investigating are the hot and cold biome. Both contain a devastating environment. It's a
miracle that organisms are able to survive here. In the hot desert, during the day, the heat is almost unbearable, but during the night, it dips down into
freezing temperatures. It usually never rains, but when it does, it rains in short bursts between rainless periods. The reason for the temperatures
fluctuating so often is due to the atmosphere not having sufficient humidity. The sand there is course, shallow, and rocky with good drainage, but no
subsurface water. In the cold desert, there is a lot of rainfall throughout winter, and little throughout summer. The winters are very cold, and it often
will snow. The average snowfall ranges from 15ā€“26 cm. There sand consists of pebbles and small rocks. It is also very salty. In order to survive in the
desert region, the plants and animals (flora and fauna) need to adapt to the environment. In the hot deserts, prickly pears open their stomata of their
leaves only at night where the evaporation rates are the lowest. Cacti are able retain water. The Joshua tree has extremely ... Show more content on

Great Victoria Desert Analysis
Nearly allā€“large deserts are found away from the coasts, in areas where the oceans moisture rarely reaches. For many of us, the word "desert"
invokes thoughts of a hot and sandy environment. However, not all deserts may be sandy and hot, they do have one thing on common...they are dry.
One type of desert we are focusing on, are the subtropical deserts, which sand dunes are a typical feature, along with the low vegetation and scarcity
of water (KDE). Subtropical deserts are the hottest deserts, which are dry in the summer and cooler but still dry during the winter (Nature Works,
2015). In fact, most deserts receive less than 300mm of water a year (Paleontology U, 2013), much like the Great Victoria Desert in Australia where
annual rainfall ranges from below 150mm to over 250mm (Fund, 2014). Great Victoria desert is the largest desert in Australia ranging to about 163,900
square miles (Hastwell) and during summer temperatures can reach between 32 ā€“ 35 degrees Celsius, whereas come winter it falls to about 18 ā€“ 23
degrees Celsius. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Much of Great Victoria is occupied by many small sand dunes and mostly consists of underlying granite beds thought to be some of the oldest rock in

populated in the continent of Australia due to its lack of agriculture opportunities. Before Great Victoria was a desert it was assumed that it was a
moderately mountainous area, though due to erosion the mountains were eventually worn down (Nature Works,

The Great Basin Desert Research Paper
When thinking of a desert, one would think of a large, dry, and sandy area like the Sahara Desert. The Great Basin Desert is different because it is a
cold desert. A cold desert is completely different from the typical desert with average temperatures of 55ā€“57 degrees Fahrenheit in summer, and in
winter it averages around 4 degrees Fahrenheit. Cold deserts will normally have much more water. Water is the lifeline of The Great BasinDesert
(Pellant), which is a good thing and a bad thing. The term "basin" is used with the meaning no water from the ocean ever reaches this region
(National Park Service). Water rights to the Great Basin Desert have been a problem for a long time and with the risk of water loss and risk of losing

Descriptions And Differences Of The Alpine And Desert...
The world has many ecosystems which has some similarities and some differences to each other. In my essay I am going to contrast and compare the
Alpine and Desert Ecosystems describing climates, soils, plant adaptations and interactions between plants and animals.
First I would like to give an overview of each ecosystem and then compare their attributes.
Alpine Ecosystems can be found all around the world on great mountain ranges at an altitude of 10000 feet or more just below the snow line of the
mountains for example in the Andes, Alps or Rocky Mountains. Around 16% percent of the Earth's surface is part of this ecosystem.
The climate here is generally very cold which leads to the ground being mostly frozen. Due to this dead plants cannot ... Show more content on

They also want to preserve the water they gained so they are mostly slower growing which takes less energy therefore less food which means they do
not use as much water.
They also developed a range of methods to scare animals away, but on the other hand they need pollinators who in these areas are more active in the
night so their flowers open at this time.
The main similarity between the plant adaptations in these ecosystems is that they grow small because of the lack of nutrients in the soil, the wind and
the extreme weather.
They also develop hairy leaves but for different reasons. In the Alpine Ecosystem they are doing it to help them keep the warmth they gained during
the day and also to break the wind and provide a fairly warmer temperature around the plant. However in the Desert Ecosystem they do it to reduce
water loss.
Another similarity is that their leaves or flowers are turning during the day. But again it has different causes. While in Alpine regions they want to
absorb more sun this was, in Desert regions they want to avoid losing water.
They have similarities in growing spine or needles instead of leaves because these are more efficient in absorbing sunlight which is crucial for

The Gobi and Taklamakan are both classified as Arid. The summer temperatures reach into the 80s (day and night temperatures averaged) and the
winter temperatures reach into the 50s. With only 5 inches of rain yearly, they are classified as deserts. The arid regions of China have extremely low
population densities. This is one of the main contributing factors explaining why most of the population of China is extensively focused on the east
coast. The semiā€“arid regions of China generally have a higher population density than the arid regions. This is because it receives 18 inches of rain
yearly, which is above the threshold to not be classified as a desert. They have moderate summers with mild winters. This is also another main reason
why many more people live here than in the arid regions. The northeastern portion of China experiences this climate. Beijing, for example, is a
populated region that lies in the semiā€“arid region of China. The humid continental region of China lies in the very northeastern portion of China (the
portion directly east of Mongolia). Aside from the winters, this region experiences very moderate temperatures and humidity. This specific region in
China receives 28 inches of rain yearly on average. The winters reach down into the twenties, while the summers stretch up into the mid sixties. Due to
the fact that this portion of China lies on a larger parallel, it experiences colder winters than other regions of China. The humidā€“subtropical region of
China experiences very high rates of humidity. It receives 50 inches of rain on average yearly. This region is much more moderate than the humid
continental region due to the fact that it experiences temperatures dipping down only into the high forties in the winter. This is probably because of the
humidity that affects the climate. This climate region lies in the southeastern portion of China. In China also

Descriptive Essay On A Day In The Desert
After working in the field on a scorching summer day I was as thirsty and hot as a lizard in the Atacama Desert, the driest desert in the world,
without water for nine years and nine months and nine days and being beaten down by scaring heat from the merciless sun. The idea of water
seemed foreign to me because there were none around then. Suddenly, I saw a shiny, metallic water fountain and my body urged me in the direction
of the water fountain. When I took a drink of water, my parched mouth felt relieved, as if I took a dive in a crystal clear pool on a hot summer day.
The cold and refreshing water soared from the water fountain into my mouth and moisturized my rough, dry tongue. As the cold liquid sloshes down
my throat, I let a small smile as the icy water alleviated my dehydrated body. However, my body is not only longing for water, but also as well as for
sustenance. My stomach growl in defiance as it was deprived of proper nutritional substance for the next six grueling hours until dinner, which seemed
to be in the distant future.
When dinner time arrived, I was ravenous. I was so famished to point that I could down a full course meal in the time frame of five minutes or even
less. When my mom, my lord, and savior, raining down a plate of juicy steak sided with mashed potato and a bowl of salad upon the table, my primal
instinct urged me to force down the food like a caveman back in the stone age, disregarding any sort of table manner that existed, yet, with a

Mitzi presents another view of gay men. 'She' is more embarrassed about being a drag queen, especially in front of 'her' son stating "Sorry about last
night. I don't always dress up in women's clothes. I mean don't get the wrong idea. I do lots of different stuff......... You know, like Elvis and Garry
Glitter and......." Although in the end 'she' loosens up when 'she' realizes that 'her' son accepts 'her' for whom she is. Mitzi.
Bob contrasts with the gay characters. He represents a gender binary of masculinity. Bob is an openā€“minded mechanic that takes a liking to Bernadette.
Bob travels with the three on their journey after Priscilla brakes down. He was married to a mailā€“order wife, a Filipino prostitute that left him during
the movie stating that he wasn't a good husband.
During the trip the three main characters stop off in Coober Pedy, a small tough town. Bob goes to the local pub to drink with his mates but Felicia
comes along too, dressed as a women. The men at the pub react violently. This is a stereotype about Australian men that are confronted with different
types of masculinity.
"The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" is important to Australian culture not only for a great laugh but because it teaches people that there
are many different types of Australian men and to embrace our diversity. Elliot used the AIDS epidemic as inspiration for this movie and did a very good

Analysis Of Edward Abbey 's Desert Solitaire
I will be reviewing Edward Abbey's memoir during his time spent in southern Utah. In his book, Desert Solitaire, Abbey illustrates how the Arches
National Monument evolves throughout time and including the time he spends there working as a park ranger and observing the change throughout
his adventures. The two thematic concepts I will be incorporating onto his memoir are the urbanization and development lenses. Throughout his
memoir, Abbey ties in many thematic concepts to each other, but only addressing to these two lenses will give a better description. Thus both
urbanization and development do play a role in the main point Abbey portrays in Desert Solitaire. In the beginning of his memoir, Abbey shares his
own opinion, in which he uses to give a very descriptive explanation on why urbanization and development are both hazardous but also carry benefits
to places like Arches Mountains. Abbey gets his point down and uses his time inUtah to back up his argument. Desert Solitaire takes place in a small,
lightly populated city in southern Utah called Moab. Edward Abbey's venture begins when he becomes a park ranger for the Arches National
Monument. Pleased by the fact that the Arches are surrounded only by dry, deserted Canyonlands, Abbey shares in his memoir that this is his
paradise. In addition to his paradise dream, Abbey works twelve miles away from the closest human, in which he says that he is thankful for being in
such solidarity. Being alone in one of the least

The Sonoran Desert : The Desert
1. The Sonoran Desert
The term desert is strongly connected to the image of an extremely harsh environment void of any life. The sand dunes at the Gulf of California would
fit this description of a desert biome, but for large parts the Sonoran Desert has a stunning array of different organisms.
The defining character of a desert is usually low levels of rainfall with under 25 cm per year. Additional to that, the relationship between rainfall and the
evaporated and transpired water must be taken into consideration. "A desert is a biological community in which most of the indigenous plants and
animals are adapted to chronic aridity and periodic, extreme droughts, and in which these conditions are necessary to maintain the community's
structure" (Phillips, Comus, 2000, p. 10). This means that it is the environmental and climatic conditions that have created an evolutionary pressure for
the flora to develop.
The Sonoran Desert is the most biodiverse desert in the world. This is due to the age of it, the subā€“tropical climate in large parts of it, the creation of
microā€“habitats due to the different landforms and the diverse rainfall patterns. There are about 2500 species that can be found in it. It partially has a
very high endemism with for example 552 species being endemic to Baja California. Numerous desert plants have been used by humans for food and
medicine. Some plants like Agave tequilana which is grown to produce alcoholic beverages have some economic importance as

Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire
In Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire, Abbey readily argues for the beauty of the desert and for its complexity, yet simple life. Abbey clearly states
that his purpose for writing this book is not for the mere purpose of making a guide book to the beautiful Arches National Park in Utah, but rather a
eulogy to the dying wilderness of the desert, due to the spread of the commercialism. Similar to Henry David Thoreau, a renowned environmental
essayist in the 1840s, Abbey believes in removing oneself from the life the metropolis lifestyle and secluding oneself in the wilderness of nature and
relishing its simplicity of life. Abbey is no stranger to believing in the ideology that we as a human race inherently belong out in the natural world. In

is a shame, and even a sin to life, to see humanity consuming and exploiting the very thing that sustains us: But the love of the wilderness is more

The plants have been thriving through California, which then would lead to the plants going through parts of the Mojave Desert since it is located in
California. The plants that are unā€“harmful are the ones that are native. The non native plant species are one of the leading causes of the many
wildfires in the area. The ones to look out for are the Russian thistle, cheat grass, saharan mustard, giant reed, and the tamarisk ("Invasive Species").
Along with the non native plant species growing rapidly and out of control, there are also two latter weeds that have been growing along river
channels through the Mojave Desert. Once a desert is damaged, it can take years to regrow the plants let alone centuries to return to the desert and

When native plants die off or get picked by another predator, the non native plants grow in place of the native ones ("Threats to Mojave"). The
reason plants are causing the uproar is they have really fine native woods which tend to burn easily and the plants are so close together the next one

The Desert In The American Dream
Heat, sweat, and dehydration; those are the words that greatly associate with the desert. The desert is portrayed as a barren place that inhabits
occupants with high electricity bills due to the constant running of their air conditioning, or old time western folktales. Cue the western cowboy
standoff music as the comedic tumbleweed makes its appearance across the desert landscape. Now pause the scene and remove all the exterior objects
until the nothing except the desert is visible. With closer inspection of the scene, a godly atmosphere can be exhibited by the barren desert,
thereby causing a desire to drop everything and start over. The desert offers redemption to those who seek it, as well as an opportunity to escape
reality. Places such as Los Angeles and Hollywood are loosely defined as being a desert because it is where they originated from. In comparison to
Hollywood, the desert appears to have nothing to offer, so why do people seek refuge there? The role of the desert in Joan Didion's Play it as it Lays
and Sam Shepard's True West is portrayed as being a sanctuary for both Maria and BZ, as well as Austin and Lee. Therefore, the desert serves a role
in both works by becoming a sanctuary to escape the destructive clutches of Hollywood.

Introduction When we look at the world map with its established deserts, then we notice that all the big deserts are arranged (with little deviance)
along two belts around the globe (Figure1). These two belts are in the areas of around 20ā€“30 degrees of latitude north and south of the equator ā€“ the
soā€“called Horse Latitudes. In the northern hemisphere we have the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts in North America, the Sahara in North Africa, the
Arabian Desert on the Arabian Peninsula, the Turkestan, Dashtā€“Eā€“Lut, Thar, Taklan Makan, and the Gobi Deserts in Asia. In the southern hemisphere
there are the Sechura and Atacama Deserts in South America, the Kalahari and Namib in South Africa, and the Australian Desert.
Hypothesis
Why are the deserts on Earth so neatly aligned? The large majority of water in the air originates from evaporation of ocean water. This water is
transported through air in form of clouds and mist. Desertification requires aridity, therefore areas with significantly less precipitation are predisposed
to turn into deserts. Several factors are responsible to create this necessary aridity along the Horse Latitudes at around 30 degrees north and south of the
equator. Around 60 degrees north and south the most precipitation occurs and at

Analysis Of Edward Abbey's 'Desert Solitaire'
Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey begins in the area surrounding Moab, Utah. He discusses his intense love and adoration for the land. This theme of
laying out the land for the reader continues from Chapters 1ā€“5. It is apparent the Abbey adores nature in its purest form. Abbey rarely has visitors of
the human kind, he is more often visited by snakes, deer, birds, and other wildlife than the parks superintendent, the chief park ranger, and a few
tourists here and there. Abbey finds himself a little lonely from time to time in the beginning of the book but by Chapter 3: The Serpents of Paradise
he finds a friend. He first encounters a not so friendly creature, a faded midget, a poisonous rattlesnake lying underneath his doorstep. Abbey often
finds himself talking to the animals in this book, so he decides to issue the snake a warning and remove it. When it comes back to the trailer a second
time, Abbey keeps his promise and kills the snake. Eventually, he finds another snake, which he recognizes is an enemy to the rattlesnake, and he
sets out to domesticate it. Abbey decides to take it on excursions with him, wrapping the snake around his waist underneath his shirt. Eventually,
the snake was released and never returned. In Chapter 4, Abbey focuses more on the plants in the region, citing his favorite wildflower, the
cliffrose, and going over his weekly schedules. His busiest days are the weekends when campers come, after he cleans, makes his rounds, takes a
couple days off, restocks supplies, and then starts all over again. Chapter 5, is when things start to get heavy. It is at this point Abbey starts
revealing how truly frustrated he is with the US government and the tourists. Abbey is fiercely protective of the park and soon discovers that roads
will be paved in the park to increase tourism. He is horrified at the aspect of a new road because he sees automobiles as an enemy to the National
Park industry. To Abbey, cars limit tourists from actually see the land, stating that a short distance on bike or foot is much more appreciated than a
very long distance in a car. He also suggests a new plan for national parks in order to preserve their authenticity. Abbey thinks that tourists should travel

Desert Island Analysis
Desert Islands
The most imaginary desert islands which he described in novel were like a peaceful paradise where the shipwrecked traveler manages to continue
living pretty much as before used for Robinson Crusoe or Desert Island Discs!
In a book Coral Island by RM Ballantyne which was published in 1857, 100 years before Golding's book, three young British boys are shipwrecked on a
desert island and have to survive without any adults. They were brave and resourceful. They thoroughly enjoy their experience and there is never a hint
of trouble. As one of the characters, Peterkin, says, "There was indeed no note of discord whatever in that symphony we played together on that sweet
coral island."
From his experience as a teacher, Golding knew that the idyllic life of Coral Islandcould never exist in real life. So, he set out to write a novel that
showed his ideas about the darker side of human nature starting from the same basis. Boys stranded on a desert island, away from all civilizing
influences. Lord of the Flies was the result.
Lord of the Flies:
These 5 years of war affected him deeply. Here he knew that even good can become evil. In an interview he said:
"WWII which I spent in Royal Navy had a great influence on my life as well as my work. At that time I was young and now I am old. I was terrified
and it had been taken a long time to gain some understanding of mankind".
He also said
"Before the WWII, I believed in the perfection of social Man. but after the war i did not. I had discovered what one man could do to another. Anyone
who moved to these years without understanding that man produces evil as a bee produces honey, must have been blind or wrong in the head."
At the end of war Golding returned to teaching and moved to Salisbury with his family. One day he said to his wife. "Wouldn't it be good idea if I
wrote a book about child on an Island? children who behave in the way. Children really would behave." when he returned to his post at Bishop
Wordsworth's School in 1945, he began furthering his writing career. He wrote three novels, all of which went unpublished. But his frustration would
not last long. He started working on a novel "The Strangers Within" in 1952. A year later it was sent

  • 2. Saguaro: The Sahara Desert There are roughly 8.7 million known species of plants and animals distributed all over the world. However, there are fewer plant and animal species found in hot desert areas due to the climate and landform. Living under the arid evnironment is typically difficult because of the extreme climate, the fluctuation of temperature between night and day is enormous, and sandstorms occur frequently. As well as this, there are very few nutritional substances for survival. However, the biggest challenge for living things in the hot desert is most likely the dry weather and lack of rain. The annual rainfall is below 25 mm in the Sahara Desert, the world's biggest desert, compared with the Amazon rainforest which has an average precipitation of 1250 to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, the sandstorms come frequently due to the soil issue and the water resource is limited. Those harsh conditions contribute a real tough challenge for living in the hot desert, but the desert animals have their own way to survive and succeed. As the water is the basis of life, the first issue that desert animals need to face is the lack of water. Animals have figured out their way to gain enough water for their diet. Some animals make water on their own; Merriam's kangaroo rats do not drink water for their entire life, they eat high carbohydrate seeds so that does not need too much water to process and their faeces is really dry.5 For animals do not have this kind of special function in their metabolic system, like kit foxes and snakes, gain water directly from the plants they eat. Succulent plants in desert usually have thick leaves to store moisture but their shorn is not as obvious as catic; without the protection, animals can eat the prey easily. The Texas horned lizards have magical skin structure for collecting rainwater. The desert animals do not only need to obtain water, but also need to reduce lost of water by avoiding evaporation. The Mojave Desert is a world famous desert that occupies a signiŠæĀ¬Šƒcant amount of California and smaller parts in surrounding states. Covering thousands of square kilometers, the ecosystems can range from 100 meters below sea level up to 2000 meters above sea level. The biophysical interactions within these ecosystems such as earth movements, soil formation, weather and climate lead to very diverse environments, along with the many biotic factors. With the rapidly increasing impacts of human uses, pollution and urban sprawl the Mojave Desert is consistently becoming more damaged, altered and different to what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This animal thrives as it is highly adaptable, therefore it is perfect for the harshness of the Mojave Desert. Mojave Food Chain The Plants of the Desert The brittle bush is a bush that grows across most of the Mojave Desert and from March to June it thrives turning the desert yellow. Growing to around ŠæĀ¬Šƒve foot these plants are suited to this environment as they have a matt of short hairs that cover all the leaves. These hairs act as an insulating layer against hot and cold, and they also trap moisture. Common saltbush is a grayish white shrub that grows to be around a meter tall. They are not a pretty plant, but are well adapted to living in dry, alkaline environments. It has scales on the leaves to conserve water, although it doesn't like to hold large amounts of water. Also in droughts it has the ability to drop all leaves and see the drought through. The Joshua Tree mainly grows in the Joshua Tree National Park and is only found in the Mojave Desert. With a life span of 200 years, and a maximum height of just over 12 meters this tree also has 2 root systems. One root systems buries deep and stores water in large bulbs up to 10 meters underground. The other root system is shallow and gathers nutrients. The spiny leaf system is turned up wards in order to catch any moisture in the air. • 4. Sonoran Desert Ecosystem Lab Report There are different sorts of environments scattered over the earth, but what and where are they? In World Biodiversity Expedition, the reader is to collect data about these organisms and the environment they are settled at. A biome is often mistaken as an ecosystem, however, it is defined by nonā€“living factors such as climate, soils, and vegetation. This unit helped me understand more clearly that there are so many organisms that I did not know anything about. I learned a lot from this specific unit when it comes to discoverying animals and organisms that I did not know exist. Nearly 2,000ā€“9,000 pounds of Krill can fill a fully grown Blue whale daily, nearly 8,000 pounds of Krill is eaten during the whales peak consumption period. The next organism I identified is the Antartctic krill that is 6 centimeters in length. This animals is consumed by many marine animals such as the Blue whale, but what does the krill eat? • 5. Desert Desert Environment The deserts of central Australia make up a unique ecoregion. As it may be properly assumed, an arid desert environment is not easy to adapt to. Many different species, including birds, reptiles, mammals, and various plants are able to thrive in such conditions. Human impacts on the island continent have interrupted the success of some of these species. One group of species that have been very negatively impacted by human interaction are small digging mammals. These mammals are typically small and almost rodentā€“like. Although small, digging mammals, such as Macrotis lagotis (the Greater Bilby), have a large impact on the vegetation biodiversity of the ecoregion. They use their front paws to dig into the ground while they search for food. In the process, diggings capture organic matter, provide habitat for a diversity of microscopic and macroscopic organisms, and increase nutrient cycling. Diggings also capture plant seeds, increasing seedling germination, recruitment, and plant growth. The overall effect of mammal diggings is therefore increased plant vigor and resilience, increased biodiversity and consequently improved ecosystem functioning (Fleming et al 2014). Due to various impacts by human, these small mammals have quickly been declining. The large impact humans have had on the small mammals is the introduction of invasive species. • 6. Essay about Sun Tzu vs. The Wisdom of the Desert Sun Tzu vs. The Wisdom of the Desert In the many forms it may take, conflict has been with the human race since the beginning of time. Conflict may occur within the self or with other; it has caused wars and created strife throughout whole countries as well as in the lives of individuals. The world has never not known conflict, yet many still seem to be distraught when it occurs in their realm. Conquering conflict then seems to be the conflict itself. Whether the conflict is spiritual or militaristic, resolving and conquering it sometimes uses the same tactics. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When speaking of tactics, Sun Tzu wrote: He wins his battles by making no mistakes. Making no mistakes is what establishes the certainty of victory, for it means conquering an enemy that is already defeated. (Clavell 1983, 7) So if the commander is thoroughly able to carry out his plans, he will have beaten the enemy before stepping onto the battlefield. Sun Tzu argued that success was in the hands of the commander since, "the consummate leader cultivates the Moral Law and strictly adheres to method and discipline; thus it is in his power to control success." (Clavell 1983, 20) Strategy is key to success, not just in war but in any aspect of life. The monks who lived in lived in the desert felt strategy was important, but used it in an entirely different context. Their strategy was to avoid conflict at all costs and if it did occur, then it should be resolved peacefully. At the same that they advocated peace, the desert fathers also felt the conflict with evil should be dealt with actively. In his book The Wisdom of the Desert,Thomas Merton wrote: The saints of the desert were enemies of every subtle or gross expedient by which 'the spiritual man' contrives to bully those he thinks inferior to himself, thus gratifying his own ego. (Tue/Thu 12ā€“1:20) On Oct. 5, 2016 I attended the UTEP Dinner Theatre's performance of Priscilla Queen of The Desert. Which is based on a book and movie by Stephan Elliott and Allen Scott. The play's overall theme revolves around the lives of performing show business Drag Queens, and the overall concept of human understanding. The play was produced and directed by Gregory L. Taylor, and performed by a hulled cast of both young and old that really did shine. "Tick," played by Jonathon Contreras, who I would place as the protagonist of the play has found himself in quite the pickle, aside from that he is also getting a gig.. His wife Marion, although totally okay with his Drag Queen lifestyle, has had enough. She wants him to perform at her casino in central Australia; which is a ways off from Tick's Sydney. The real pickle is when we find out about Tick's son. Marion wants Tick to come visit his son and try to start some sort of communication with him. Bernadette, performed by Jay Stratton, is an old(er) drag Queen who knows the ropes and quickly is enlisted for the trip to Alice Springs, Australia. Bernadette feels iffy, but sure of herself and her performing abilities, that is until Tick relays the news that someone by the name of Adam/Felicia will be joining them. • 9. The Desert Tortoise Essay The battle between the federal governments, Bureau of Land Management and Cliven Bundy began back in the 1990 's. For several years the problems between the Bundy family and the BLM went unnoticed until a protest occurred in April of 2014 over confiscated cattle. In Early April of 2014, the BLM rounded up Mr. Bundy 's cattle and took them away, leaving him with nothing to his name and no way to make a living. All this was done in the name of a tortoise population which has been slowly declining in population numbers for several decades sense the wild west had been cultivated. While the Center for Biological Conservation believe the desert tortoise is negatively impacted by grazing cattle studies suggest the stability of the desert tortoise comes from their symbiotic relationship with grazing cattle. Many questioned if Cliven Budy was justified in his actions, or if the BLM should have acted with more force against Bundy. Though some say he has acted unlawfully, I believe Cliven Bundy 's actions were necessary to insure the wellbeing of his livelihood. Furthermore, the US government should have attempted to collaborate or compromise with Bundy before confiscating his cattle. Americans have a right to object to laws they do not support. • 13. Jesus Went Into The Desert Too Jesus Went Into the Desert Too Beth Alvarado is notably known for her short story "Emily's Exit". The use of religion sets the tone, and catches the eye of many readers in the essay. Religion is the belief and worshipping of a preeminent being, while faith is the trust of this preeminent being, not based on truth. Those of a Christian faith, therefore, have a belief in this greater being who is known as God. They believe the claim that life is an endowment from God, and that once we die, we continue to live for evermore in heaven. Through close reading, It was clear that the author, Alvarado, wanted to create a faintly disturbing story full of "tension and anxiety" (Alvarado, n.d.). Religion, often times associated with death and despair, was used in the writing of "Emily's Exit" to depict a story of dark suffering, "evoke images and emotion..." (Alvarado, n.d.), and force the audience into understanding the seriousness and the severity of the events that happen. Religion is an unā€“humorous matter to many people and their faith in God is unbreakable. They couldn't conceptualize a life without God. In "Emily's Exit", once Emily disappeared, her mother "... became a Buddhist. It was the only way she could deal with it" (Alvarado, 2006, p. 428). This exemplifies how Alvarado used religion to demonstrate the deepā€“seriousness of the situation. It is assumed that, just like Emily, her mother was a believer in Christianity as well. Most deserts get less than 10 inches of rain every year, but some deserts get even less than that. The wind is constantly blowing in deserts. The wind speed in deserts is annually around 80 miles per hour. The wind is the main reason that so many people get lost in deserts, because it is always reshaping sand dunes and covering up landmarks with sand (Johansson, 14ā€“16). Landforms While most animals get their water from cactus, there are still many that have to get their water from oases. Not every animal in the desert can go to the same cactus and not be eaten by predators. They also don't think about a group of predators that will take over a cactus and take all of the water for themselves, although this is a very unlikely event it could still very easily happen. The downside from drinking from oases is that when the wind starts to pick up and then blows a ton of sand into the oases. Even though it would take a while this could very well happen too and the without water the prey would die off, with no prey means no food for the predators and with no food the predators would die off leaving the deserts full of only plants (Wilkins, 9). In the hot desert, during the day, the heat is almost unbearable, but during the night, it dips down into freezing temperatures. The reason for the temperatures fluctuating so often is due to the atmosphere not having sufficient humidity. The sand there is course, shallow, and rocky with good drainage, but no subsurface water. Around 16% percent of the Earth's surface is part of this ecosystem. The climate here is generally very cold which leads to the ground being mostly frozen. Due to this dead plants cannot ... They also developed a range of methods to scare animals away, but on the other hand they need pollinators who in these areas are more active in the night so their flowers open at this time. The main similarity between the plant adaptations in these ecosystems is that they grow small because of the lack of nutrients in the soil, the wind and the extreme weather. They also develop hairy leaves but for different reasons. In the Alpine Ecosystem they are doing it to help them keep the warmth they gained during the day and also to break the wind and provide a fairly warmer temperature around the plant. However in the Desert Ecosystem they do it to reduce water loss. Another similarity is that their leaves or flowers are turning during the day. But again it has different causes. While in Alpine regions they want to absorb more sun this was, in Desert regions they want to avoid losing water. They have similarities in growing spine or needles instead of leaves because these are more efficient in absorbing sunlight which is crucial for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Gobi and Taklamakan are both classified as Arid. The summer temperatures reach into the 80s (day and night temperatures averaged) and the winter temperatures reach into the 50s. With only 5 inches of rain yearly, they are classified as deserts. The arid regions of China have extremely low population densities. This is one of the main contributing factors explaining why most of the population of China is extensively focused on the east coast. The semiā€“arid regions of China generally have a higher population density than the arid regions. This is because it receives 18 inches of rain yearly, which is above the threshold to not be classified as a desert. They have moderate summers with mild winters. This is also another main reason why many more people live here than in the arid regions. The northeastern portion of China experiences this climate. Beijing, for example, is a populated region that lies in the semiā€“arid region of China. The humid continental region of China lies in the very northeastern portion of China (the portion directly east of Mongolia). Aside from the winters, this region experiences very moderate temperatures and humidity. This specific region in China receives 28 inches of rain yearly on average. The winters reach down into the twenties, while the summers stretch up into the mid sixties. Due to the fact that this portion of China lies on a larger parallel, it experiences colder winters than other regions of China. The humidā€“subtropical region of China experiences very high rates of humidity. It receives 50 inches of rain on average yearly. This region is much more moderate than the humid continental region due to the fact that it experiences temperatures dipping down only into the high forties in the winter. This is probably because of the humidity that affects the climate. This climate region lies in the southeastern portion of China. In China also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The play was put on by Performance Network Theatre in Ann Arbor, Michigan directed by David Wolber. I saw this play because I remembered performing in the space before with Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit and I had never heard of OtherDesert Cities before. Descriptive Essay On A Day In The Desert After working in the field on a scorching summer day I was as thirsty and hot as a lizard in the Atacama Desert, the driest desert in the world, without water for nine years and nine months and nine days and being beaten down by scaring heat from the merciless sun. The idea of water seemed foreign to me because there were none around then. Suddenly, I saw a shiny, metallic water fountain and my body urged me in the direction of the water fountain. When I took a drink of water, my parched mouth felt relieved, as if I took a dive in a crystal clear pool on a hot summer day. The cold and refreshing water soared from the water fountain into my mouth and moisturized my rough, dry tongue. As the cold liquid sloshes down my throat, I let a small smile as the icy water alleviated my dehydrated body. However, my body is not only longing for water, but also as well as for sustenance. My stomach growl in defiance as it was deprived of proper nutritional substance for the next six grueling hours until dinner, which seemed to be in the distant future. When dinner time arrived, I was ravenous. I was so famished to point that I could down a full course meal in the time frame of five minutes or even less. When my mom, my lord, and savior, raining down a plate of juicy steak sided with mashed potato and a bowl of salad upon the table, my primal instinct urged me to force down the food like a caveman back in the stone age, disregarding any sort of table manner that existed, yet, with a ... In his book, Desert Solitaire, Abbey illustrates how the Arches National Monument evolves throughout time and including the time he spends there working as a park ranger and observing the change throughout his adventures. The two thematic concepts I will be incorporating onto his memoir are the urbanization and development lenses. Throughout his memoir, Abbey ties in many thematic concepts to each other, but only addressing to these two lenses will give a better description. Thus both urbanization and development do play a role in the main point Abbey portrays in Desert Solitaire. In the beginning of his memoir, Abbey shares his own opinion, in which he uses to give a very descriptive explanation on why urbanization and development are both hazardous but also carry benefits to places like Arches Mountains. Abbey gets his point down and uses his time inUtah to back up his argument. Desert Solitaire takes place in a small, lightly populated city in southern Utah called Moab. Edward Abbey's venture begins when he becomes a park ranger for the Arches National Monument. Pleased by the fact that the Arches are surrounded only by dry, deserted Canyonlands, Abbey shares in his memoir that this is his paradise. In addition to his paradise dream, Abbey works twelve miles away from the closest human, in which he says that he is thankful for being in such solidarity. Being alone in one of the least ... Both contain a devastating environment. It's a miracle that organisms are able to survive here. In the hot desert, during the day, the heat is almost unbearable, but during the night, it dips down into freezing temperatures. It usually never rains, but when it does, it rains in short bursts between rainless periods. The reason for the temperatures fluctuating so often is due to the atmosphere not having sufficient humidity. The sand there is course, shallow, and rocky with good drainage, but no subsurface water. In the cold desert, there is a lot of rainfall throughout winter, and little throughout summer. The winters are very cold, and it often will snow. The average snowfall ranges from 15ā€“26 cm. There sand consists of pebbles and small rocks. It is also very salty. In order to survive in the desert region, the plants and animals (flora and fauna) need to adapt to the environment. In the hot deserts, prickly pears open their stomata of their leaves only at night where the evaporation rates are the lowest. Cacti are able retain water. The Joshua tree has extremely ... • 36. The Sonoran Desert : The Desert 1. The Sonoran Desert The term desert is strongly connected to the image of an extremely harsh environment void of any life. The sand dunes at the Gulf of California would fit this description of a desert biome, but for large parts the Sonoran Desert has a stunning array of different organisms. The defining character of a desert is usually low levels of rainfall with under 25 cm per year. Additional to that, the relationship between rainfall and the evaporated and transpired water must be taken into consideration. "A desert is a biological community in which most of the indigenous plants and animals are adapted to chronic aridity and periodic, extreme droughts, and in which these conditions are necessary to maintain the community's structure" (Phillips, Comus, 2000, p. 10). This means that it is the environmental and climatic conditions that have created an evolutionary pressure for the flora to develop. The Sonoran Desert is the most biodiverse desert in the world. This is due to the age of it, the subā€“tropical climate in large parts of it, the creation of microā€“habitats due to the different landforms and the diverse rainfall patterns. There are about 2500 species that can be found in it. It partially has a very high endemism with for example 552 species being endemic to Baja California. Abbey clearly states that his purpose for writing this book is not for the mere purpose of making a guide book to the beautiful Arches National Park in Utah, but rather a eulogy to the dying wilderness of the desert, due to the spread of the commercialism. Similar to Henry David Thoreau, a renowned environmental essayist in the 1840s, Abbey believes in removing oneself from the life the metropolis lifestyle and secluding oneself in the wilderness of nature and relishing its simplicity of life. • 40. Where Do Deserts Form? Uwe Meyer GEOL 1303 10/12/2016 Where Do Deserts Form? A Term Project submitted in partial fulfillment of the critical thinking skills development component of Physical Geology at Wharton County Junior College Prof. Dale Pinson Introduction When we look at the world map with its established deserts, then we notice that all the big deserts are arranged (with little deviance) along two belts around the globe (Figure1). These two belts are in the areas of around 20ā€“30 degrees of latitude north and south of the equator ā€“ the soā€“called Horse Latitudes. In the northern hemisphere we have the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts in North America, the Sahara in North Africa, the Arabian Desert on the Arabian Peninsula, the Turkestan, Dashtā€“Eā€“Lut, Thar, Taklan Makan, and the Gobi Deserts in Asia. In the southern hemisphere there are the Sechura and Atacama Deserts in South America, the Kalahari and Namib in South Africa, and the Australian Desert. Hypothesis Why are the deserts on Earth so neatly aligned? The large majority of water in the air originates from evaporation of ocean water. This water is transported through air in form of clouds and mist. Desertification requires aridity, therefore areas with significantly less precipitation are predisposed to turn into deserts. Several factors are responsible to create this necessary aridity along the Horse Latitudes at around 30 degrees north and south of the equator. Around 60 degrees north and south the most precipitation occurs and at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Analysis Of Edward Abbey's 'Desert Solitaire' Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey begins in the area surrounding Moab, Utah. He discusses his intense love and adoration for the land. This theme of laying out the land for the reader continues from Chapters 1ā€“5. It is apparent the Abbey adores nature in its purest form. Abbey rarely has visitors of the human kind, he is more often visited by snakes, deer, birds, and other wildlife than the parks superintendent, the chief park ranger, and a few tourists here and there. Abbey finds himself a little lonely from time to time in the beginning of the book but by Chapter 3: The Serpents of Paradise he finds a friend. He first encounters a not so friendly creature, a faded midget, a poisonous rattlesnake lying underneath his doorstep. Abbey often finds himself talking to the animals in this book, so he decides to issue the snake a warning and remove it. When it comes back to the trailer a second time, Abbey keeps his promise and kills the snake. Eventually, he finds another snake, which he recognizes is an enemy to the rattlesnake, and he sets out to domesticate it. Abbey decides to take it on excursions with him, wrapping the snake around his waist underneath his shirt. Eventually, the snake was released and never returned. In Chapter 4, Abbey focuses more on the plants in the region, citing his favorite wildflower, the cliffrose, and going over his weekly schedules. His busiest days are the weekends when campers come, after he cleans, makes his rounds, takes a couple days off, restocks supplies, and then starts all over again. Chapter 5, is when things start to get heavy. It is at this point Abbey starts revealing how truly frustrated he is with the US government and the tourists. Abbey is fiercely protective of the park and soon discovers that roads will be paved in the park to increase tourism. He is horrified at the aspect of a new road because he sees automobiles as an enemy to the National Park industry. To Abbey, cars limit tourists from actually see the land, stating that a short distance on bike or foot is much more appreciated than a very long distance in a car. He also suggests a new plan for national parks in order to preserve their authenticity. Abbey thinks that tourists should travel to the campsites ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Desert Island Analysis Desert Islands The most imaginary desert islands which he described in novel were like a peaceful paradise where the shipwrecked traveler manages to continue living pretty much as before used for Robinson Crusoe or Desert Island Discs! In a book Coral Island by RM Ballantyne which was published in 1857, 100 years before Golding's book, three young British boys are shipwrecked on a desert island and have to survive without any adults. They were brave and resourceful. They thoroughly enjoy their experience and there is never a hint of trouble. As one of the characters, Peterkin, says, "There was indeed no note of discord whatever in that symphony we played together on that sweet coral island." From his experience as a teacher, Golding knew that the idyllic life of Coral Islandcould never exist in real life. So, he set out to write a novel that showed his ideas about the darker side of human nature starting from the same basis. Boys stranded on a desert island, away from all civilizing influences. Lord of the Flies was the result. Lord of the Flies: These 5 years of war affected him deeply. Here he knew that even good can become evil. In an interview he said: "WWII which I spent in Royal Navy had a great influence on my life as well as my work. At that time I was young and now I am old. I was terrified and it had been taken a long time to gain some understanding of mankind". He also said "Before the WWII, I believed in the perfection of social Man. but after the war i did not. I had discovered what one man could do to another. Anyone who moved to these years without understanding that man produces evil as a bee produces honey, must have been blind or wrong in the head." At the end of war Golding returned to teaching and moved to Salisbury with his family. One day he said to his wife. "Wouldn't it be good idea if I wrote a book about child on an Island? children who behave in the way. Children really would behave." when he returned to his post at Bishop Wordsworth's School in 1945, he began furthering his writing career. He wrote three novels, all of which went unpublished.
