Ms. Tiffany, their strict but loving instructor, gathered the dancers around her to have a brief meeting. She announced that every senior dancer was
required to audition for a principal role of their choice, and that she will announce the cast two weeks before the show. Ever since last year, the
dancers already knew which role they wanted, and practically already knew the choreography. They quickly began to go over the choreography and
rehearse for the upcoming audition.
Anna Beth has dreamed of dancing the dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy ever since she tried on her first pair of ballet slippers on. She was mesmerized by
the tenderness of the Sugar Plum Fairy and would rehearse for hours until she got it perfect. Her only competition was Ellen, her best friend. The two

It is incredibly hard to take a classic, a piece known by thousands, recognizable by the first few notes of music, and change a single thing without
inducing wrath. The Hard Nut by Mark Morris is a contemporary dance piece choreographed in the early 1990s. It is a piece based off of the
Nutcracker, following a slightly altered story, though keeping the original music and much of the original concept. Thedance focused on will be The
Waltz of the Snowflakes. This dance, in particular, reflects concepts of beauty beyondgender, while also reflecting how the concepts of gender were
challenged during the time period that this was originally choreographed and performed in, reflected through both the choreography and the set. The
Hard Nut is a stunning piece of contemporary ballet alters the original concepts of the Nutcracker while still honoring the original. The modernized
version is meant to take place in possibly 1960s or 1970s, opposed to the Victorian Era most use, but the setting isn't the only thing that is
modernized in this piece. The Waltz of the Snowflakes is a fan favorite of the original Nutcracker, where the snowflakes, donned in beautiful white
tutus, dance around Clara and the prince, creating a stunning winter scene. The original and the modernized version do have the costuming in
common, which wouldn't be surprising was it not for the dancers involved. While the Waltz of the Snowflakes is traditionally a rather feminine
piece, Mark Morris chose here to use the entire ensemble, regardless of gender, in the dance, all of whom wore the same white tutu costumes with
headpieces that further hid their gender and sex. Additionally, the choreography in the dance, unlike most ballet pieces, is not separated by gender.
Each dancer dances the same choreography regardless of their sex or gender. The choice of contemporary ballet is perfect for the message and

the cask of amontillado signifies that Montresor feels remorse for his actions but rapidly recomposes himself, as the em dash allows him to blame his
feelings "on account of the dampness of the catacombs" (pg.854). But, in doing so proves that perfect revenge is unattainable, and Montresor is left to
pretend that he is unable to feel empathy.
The em dash in this story suggests Montresor feels remorse but wills it away. But in doing so, proves that perfect revenge is nonexistent. No matter
how deep the hatred may be for Fortunato, Montresor is only human and as such, his consciousness and empathy take control of him. This new–found
realization and remorse is quickly overcome, regaining his composure by stating his feelings occurred "on account of the dampness of the catacombs"

happy that I am finally embracing who I was truly meant to be. Ballet was always fun for me, it was an escape. Until I started pointe. Oh, pointe was a
dream come true. I had dreamed of being that girl on stage with a pancake tutu, never in my life did I think it would happen. I attended Canada's
Jorgen Ballet two years in a row by request. There I learned new techniques including partner work from famous performances of The Nutcracker,
Romeo and Juliet, Beauty and The Beast and, so much more. During the camp I was the shortest and strongest girl, therefore, I got the privilege of
dancing with Luca. Luca was the most handsome boy a 13–year–old girl could have met. He was super tall, 16 years old, handsome and he had a
dreamy French accent (he was from Quebec). I didn't really know anything about him because I was too scared to talk to him about anything other than
dance, but one thing I knew for sure was he really knew how to dance with a girl like me. Goodness!
Ballet, however, became less of an escape as I got older. By the time I had quit dance I was presented with over 8 certificates from the Queen of

She handed me something that looked like socks, with everything cut off except for the toes. She mentioned they are called toe pads. Then she gave
me a plastic bag with four small, clear, jelly–like things called toe spacers. She showed me that the jelly– like –things go between my big–toe and my
second–biggest–toe. Then I put the toe pads on my toes. I wiggled my toes to see how they felt. I wrinkled my nose.

Brent Staples memoir "Just Walk on By" is a short powerful story of what his daily life is like as a black man in America. Staples works for the New
York Times as an editorial writer and also an author. He has written two books, the first a memoir named Parallel Time: Growing up In Black and
White and second called An American Love Story (wikipedia.org). He is a well–educated man who not only received his BA in behavioral science but
also continued his education as far as receiving his Ph.D. in psychology (thehistorymakers. org). Due to his successes, it makes his memoir more
shocking to see that despite his life accomplishments, he still struggles in a world that has racial stigmas. Brent Staples is a great example of how to
write a memoir due to his organization of the text, literary devices, and his use of rhetorical appeals. In the following essay, these rhetorical strategies
Staples uses will be broken down further to show why his essay is a strong mentor text. The first way Staples accomplishes his well–written memoir is

nations all over the world. Ballet has been around for hundreds years, and has a very important meaning to many people. It would be a satisfying

Giselle And The Romantic Era
The romantic era had begun in the early 19th century and was the most innovative era for the ballet. Known for the reflection of art and literature, the
romantic era was the time of fantasy, etherealism and supernaturalism. Female dancers became the superstars of the ballet especially with the
introduction of pointe work, the iconic romantic tutu and themes of a love that could never be. On a softly lit stage lights flickered over ghostly forms.
Throughout the romantic era many innovative features were introduced such as gas lighting, trap doors and fly wires. Gas lighting was used as the
transition light from sunshine to moonlight for the ballet acts. Gas lighting created a mood to tell the story of a love that was destined to fail, especially
in Giselle. The dark light of the second act filtered across the willis as they haunted the graveyard. Trap doors and fly wires were innovative as it gave
the effect of the ballerina's disappearing and flying through the air delicately.
The ballet Giselle is a romantic ballet based on a forbidden love between a royal and a commoner. Giselle is a young girl who has a weak heart and
falls deeply in love with a royal named Albercht. Giselle has a strong passion for dancing however, her heart limits her from doing what she loves.
Later in the ballet she finds out that the man she loves dearly is engaged with another woman.
In the romantic era the costuming had a large impact on performances. The costumes complimented the ballerinas.
