MTV
MTV was first broadcast on August 1st 1981 and is owned by Viacom media
networks and is American based, however across all MTV channels they reach
387 million households.
On the main MTV channel they broadcast mainly reality shows which are
targeted at young adults and teens. However on the other MTV partner
channels they play solely music and depending on the genre of the channel the
target audience varies, but MTV’s sole target audience is young teen to adult.
Many bands and artists are featured throughout the MTV channels, allowing
them a larger target audience through genre.
MTV have been seen as very controversial throughout the years within the
content shown. They used to not show videos of urban contemporary r&b
music artists, which prevented the company from producing the promotional
vehicle. They also censor videos to eliminate drugs, sex, racism and violence
within both lyrics and video.
Around 1991, Nirvana broke through the music industry with alternative music,
which hit the charts and more alternative bands having more air time on TV.
Kerrang
Kerrang first broadcast in Spring 2001, and is owned by Box television part of Bauer media
group.
The music played is mainly metal, rock and pop punk, and heavy metal/death metal and black
metal get less air time. The channel also plays featured programmes focusing on a compilation
of one bands songs or one bands greatest songs against another's, e.g. fall out boy vs. sum
41. Alongside a 30 minute program that features a band greatest hits, they also have shows
featuring a band/artist who introduce either a show about their top songs or a show featuring
their favorite song of all time or songs that have inspired them throughout their career, e.g. fall
out boys top ten anthems. This shows engagement between the band and the station, also
encourages fans to watch more as they get to have an insight into their favorite artist and also
see them introduce the songs. Kerrang also does a weekly chart segment much like other
music channels, but focuses on that weeks top rock videos. Also at the end of the year they
have an annual Rock 100, consisting of most requested videos from the year.
In terms of censorship Kerrang often have to dub over lyrics or blur certain aspects of a video.
Also many videos are heavily censored to remove profanity, violence and reference to religion.
Kerrang is broadcast on Sky and Virgin alongside the other music channels, often closer to
similar music channels such as scuzz.
The target audience of Kerrang is commonly 16-24 years old but many other people will listen
in or buy the magazine as they often feature older bands with a different target audience such
as ACDC or Aerosmith.. The main viewers of the channel are 40% female and 60% male.
Magic
Magic first broadcast on 13th September 2001 and is owned by
Box television, part of Bauer media group.
The music played consists of easy listening music ranging from
the 80’s, 90’s and some 00’s.
The channel also takes song requests, allowing viewers to get
the music played of their choice, which is a common feature of
channels owned by Bauer media group.
Magic airs on Freeview, Sky and Virgin media, which targets
their demographic more suitably. As their main audience is
around the age of 35+ due to the music played, they also feature
a segment called todays magic hits, which therefore appeals to a
wider audience, allowing them to gain a variety of viewers
throughout the day.
