2. My set will be a bricolage set constructed from randomly found obects, attained from skips, junkyards etc., brought
together and painted all white. Sachs did a similar thing in his Space Program: Mars installation, creating a rocket
type form from random objects. The bricolage nature of the set where the objects are all out of their original
context represents the characters in the play who find themselves on the island, out of their usual context/habitat.

3. Peter Brook’s version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is often
describes as one of the most forward thinking and best
interpretations of Shakespeare’s plays yet to date. I like how
the use of a plain white set gives the idea of a space in which
to play with, and has a sense of purity and cleanliness, linking
to the island’s purity and potential.
4. The Way of the World, shown at the Crucible theatre in
Sheffield employed this idea of a plain all white set and it
was very dramatic and playful. The white set provided
the perfect canvas for interesting mood creating lighting
and was a stark contrast to the flamboyant and brightly
coloured costumes of the strong characters.
This would work well with the Tempest to contrast the
foolishness and pettiness of the characters to the
straight up, innocent, pure nature of the island which
they pollute with their evil behaviour.

5. I am interested in symbolising the displacement of the characters from their hometowns and their state of
diaspora, with a chemical displacement reaction resulting in the forming of ugly, bulbous crystals. The ugliness
mirrors their nasty behaviour and actions that are caused when they are displaced onto the island.

6. Looking further into this, I would like my set to be partially submerged in copper sulphate solution, which causes a
crystalline copper sulphate to form on the outside of the white set, giving the illusion of a parasite taken it
over, representing the characters’ evil ways and plotting destroying the purity and innocence of the island.

7. I really like the lighting employed
by Pipilotti Rist. The overall
darkness and coloured lighting
creates strong moods, and the
feeling of being in a bizarre world.
I also like her style of the work to
be more installation based where
the audience can walk around it
and view it from different
angles, submerging themselves in
the art. I would like my
interpretation to incorporate this
immersive style.

8. Examples of the gender swapping that takes place in Pantomime productions
for the Dame and Principal Boy characters. The swapping of genders allows an
over-performance of character traits, mocking the characters and making it
comedic. This would be for the Tempest to make a mockery of the characters
to emphasise the comment on their foolish behaviour.

the style of bright and bold
costumes they would wear and
the use of masks for some
characters.

10. This modern interpretation of a commedia
dell’arte performance shows the
playfulness of the performance. I like the
lack of seriousness about it and the way
the characters look foolish.

11. The Enchanted Island opera of the Tempest performed at
the MET. The really elaborate costumes really exude
character and I particularly like the odd way Caliban (far
right) is depicted. He doesn’t look like he is male or even
human but he has his own sort of half man half monster
identity.
