The Garden Party Analysis
A Dream's Weary Awakening
Life is as wonderful as death is mysterious. Death holds true promise, the only inevitability for one's
future. With one hand it steals life and with the other it attempts to steal all joyous innocence of any
who knew the departed. It leaves nothing but the promise to one day steal their life as well. In 1915
Katherine Mansfield lived this tragedy when her beloved younger brother passed away, and she was
soon after diagnosed with extrapulmonary tuberculosis, which ultimately lead to her death in 1923.
In her story "The Garden Party" Katherine Mansfield enthralls her readers as she immerses them
into her journey of facing death through the eyes of the lovely young girl; Laura, whose innocence
radiates throughout her enchanting world, discovers the harsh reality of society's selfish heart, the
grief of death, and the wonders it holds.
Laura, an innocent young girl, sees her life as charming and blissful. On a warm, golden hazed
summer day, the Sheridans' home buzzed with excitement. The day of the garden party was "ideal...
[w]indless, warm, the sky without a cloud," perfectly representative of Laura and the author. Her
entire life is charming– utterly bursting with life. Being the "artistic one," she flies about their home
arranging and exploring the chaos. Laura's eyes are attentive to detail and all the "silent splendor"
enveloping nature. In an encounter with several workmen Laura finds them to be "extraordinarily
nice." Although Laura is aware

Katherine Mansfield 's The Garden Party
Foster begins this chapter with Katherine Mansfield's The Garden Party. It is about a girl, Laura,
setting up a garden party. Her mother, Mrs. Sheridan let her prepare the garden party for the first
time, so she wants to make it the best. While doing the preparations for the party, Laura hears about
the recent death of a man in the little cottages down the hill. Because of this, she tries to convince
her sister and mother to cancel the party. How could they celebrate when a neighbor just passed
away? However, the both of them tell Laura that it is not their problem that someone had died and
that it is not worth it to put away all the preparations done for the party. From this, the reader can see
that Jose, the sister and Mrs. Sheridan do not really care about the people who are not as fortunate as
them. Mrs. Sheridan distracts Laura from the topic by giving her a hat. The garden party starts and is
very successful. After it ends, Mr. Sheridan brings up the story about the man that had just died and
Mrs. Sheridan decides that they should give the family their leftover food. Laura walks down to the
cottages with a big basket of food. She wants to cover herself because she is dressed extravagantly
while the other neighbors down the hill are not. Laura goes into the widow's house and meets the
man's sister in law, Em. She takes her to see the deceased man and Laura cries. After this, Laura
leaves and meets her brother, Laurie at the corner of the road. She

The Garden Party Analysis
THE GARDEN–PARTY "The Garden Party" is a 1922 short story by Katherine Mansfield. It was
first published in the Saturday Westminster Gazette on 4 February 1922, then in the Weekly
Westminster Gazette on 18 February 1922. It later appeared in The Garden Party: and Other Stories.
[1] Its luxurious setting is based on Mansfield's childhood home at Tinakori Road, Wellington. Plot
summary The Sheridan family is preparing to host a garden party. Laura is supposed to be in charge
but has trouble with the workers who appear to know better, and her mother (Mrs. Sheridan) has
ordered lilies to be delivered for the party without Laura's approval. Her sister Jose tests the piano,
and then sings a song in case she is asked to do so again later. After ... Show more content on

After the festivities end and the family members gather in the marquee for coffee, Mr. Sheridan
broaches the subject of the fatal accident, saying how horrible it must be for the wife and children to
cope. The family goes silent. Laura thinks, "Really it was very tactless of father . . . ," but does not
finish her thought. Her mother then decides to send a basket of uneaten sandwiches and pastries
down to the Scotts. Whether she sincerely wants to help–or simply wishes to get rid of the leftovers
or assuage a feeling of guilt about the Scotts–is arguable. At any rate, Laura agrees to take the
basket. After walking down the hill from her home, she crosses a wide road and enters the environs
of the common folk. Here, Laura faces a severe test: She wished now she had put on a coat. How
her frock shone! And the big hat with the velvet streamer–if only it was another hat! Were the people
looking at her? They must be. It was a mistake to have come; she knew all along it was a mistake.
Should she go back even now? But she continues on, meets the family, and sees the dead man. The
experience is not at all horrible, as she thought it would be. He was dreaming. Never wake him up
again. His head was sunk in the pillow, his eyes were closed; they were blind under the closed
eyelids. He was given up to his dream. What did garden–parties and baskets and lace

Symbolism In Katherine Mansfield's The Garden Party
"The Garden Party" by Katherine Mansfield is a short story about a wealthy family having, as the
title would suggest, a garden party. More specifically the story follows the inner turmoil of the
youngest daughter, Laura. She has no choice but to see her family's true colors when a poorer
neighbor passes away. Laura's family sees her as childish because of her kind nature but she receives
a rude awakening that causes her to mature greatly at the end of the story.
It appears that Laura has led a very sheltered life, which is the reason she acts so childish. When
presented with the opportunity to "eat out of doors" that the garden party provides, she becomes
excited and feels somewhat rebellious, which implies she follows a strict set of ... Show more

She believes entirely that her mother will agree with her. She feels shocked and asks; "Mother, isn't
it terribly heartless of us?" which shows how disappointed in herself she would be were she to
continue with the garden party. Laura's doubts disappear when her mother presents her with a
beautiful hat and tells her she is being "extravagant" in trying to prevent the party from happening.
Any time the death comes again to her attention, she immediately returns to her guilt over the
situation. Repeatedly her beautiful hat and lace frock receive attention, as in Laura's conversation
with her brother that reads: "'My word, Laura! You do look stunning,' said Laurie. 'What an
absolutely topping hat!'" This repetition may symbolize materialism and the superficial differences
between the rich and the poor. When not influenced by others to prioritize appearances, Laura seems
to understand that none of the rules that dictate who is influential in society matters. The same
kindness that makes Laura's family see her as naive is the precise trait that makes her the most
mature of them.
At the end of the story, Laura seems to have some kind of great revelation upon seeing the dead
man. She marvels at how peaceful he looks and is again ashamed of her own trivial problems such
as the placement of the marquee in front of the trees she found the most beautiful, thinking "What

Compare And Contrast Gilgamesh And The Garden Party
About Ones Decisions In life we are given the opportunity to do whatever we want, and our choices
are dependent on how well we were raised. We either have the choice of being kind individuals that
contribute goodness to the world or become people that commit heinous crimes against our society.
In the literary stories of Gilgamesh and "The Garden party" there were some comparisons and
differences in the ideology of the literary text and some come consequences that arise from the one

said, "There is a plant that grows under the water, it has a prickle like a thorn, like a rose; it will
wound your hands, but if you succeed in taking it, then your hands will hold that which restores his
lost youth to a man. Gilgamesh was strong enough to take a piece of the plant, but a serpent stole it
from him, so he went back to having nothing. He always wanted to help himself rather than help his
people. His mindset was very relative to the literary piece Furthermore, to expound on a interesting
literary piece. A lot of the story is about the preparations and the consequences of the garden party, it
was organized by the daughters of the privileged Sheridan family. As dawn breaks, Laura goes into
the Sheridan's exquisite garden to inspect the proposed site for the marquee. Her encounter with
three workers hired to raise the tent is awkward and confused, as she finds herself torn between
being a snob and her developing sense of morality. This story is perceived as the difference between
life and death, and can sometimes be portrayed in objects. When Laura caught a glimpse of herself
in her mirror after asking her mom about the party¸ she starts to admire herself in the black hat she
was wearing and the thought of the laborer faded farther and farther into the back of her mind.

The St And The Garden Party
The excerpts that given from the stories of " The Garden Party " and " The Saint " share some
similarities in terms of feeling addicted or obliged to something. In the first place , if we start with "
The Saint , the narrator emphasizes that with all his " will " , he do not put his faith in towards
Mr.Timberlake about " walking upon the water ", so , we understand that the narrator take our
attention to the idea of " miracle " , which is one of the major symbols of the story. For example ,
since Mr. Timberlake denies the whole part of the life while embracing , it is possible to consider
him as a " transfigured " person because he is known to be religious person and earns money by

Comparing Sweat And The Garden Party
How many things can a story about a washerwoman in the South have in common with a story about
a girl from a high–class society? There is plenty. The short stories "Sweat" and "The Garden Party"
are both different and similar in more than one way. Although the use of structure and symbolism
are different, but the tones in these stories are quite similar. First of all the use tones. In both
"Sweat" and "The Garden Party", the attitudes the authors have about the topics are sympathetic and
caring, some may even think they are worried or frustrated. "Sweat" focuses on the idea of
feminism, and "The Garden Party" is centered around class. Both of the authors are expressing their
feelings about these topics and it shows through their writing. Neither of them are fond of their
story's theme, and they want the readers to see that. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The two selections are both in chronological order with climaxes at the end, the two main characters
are female, and their oppositions are both members of their own family, in "Sweat", Delia's
opposition is her husband, while Laura from "The Garden Party" is against her family's ideas and
beliefs. "Sweat" does use a lot of dialect when depicting what the townspeople are talking, and it
uses more dialogue than "The Garden Party". There are multiple plots in "The Garden Party",
including Laura's family, the Sheridans, and the family of the man who dies while "Sweat" focuses
mainly on Delia and her life. In "Sweat", the cause of Syke's death is him getting a snake to scare
Delia, his wife; the cause in "The Garden Party" is the villager dying, which led to Laura learning
about living in a high–society

Analysis Of The Garden Party By Mansfield
The main idea for an interpretation of a deeper meaning of the story, The Garden Party by
Mansfield, is relating life, and death to be held hand–in–hand. In other words, one day I can live
happy and think I can be eternal but death is always near. I don't usually like to think about death
because it can be something scary and overwhelming. Although in this story, I can see that Mrs.
Sheridan is a woman from a high–class society. A family that is concerned about with what other
people think and the fact of just having a blast every time they are able to. When Mrs. Sheridan
heard about the death of Mr. Scott she felt pity for a moment, but continued her party arrangements.
In contrast, her daughter, Laura, seemed more humane because when her mother thought about
giving the party's leftovers to her neighbors, she felt that it was rude. Therefore, I can see that she
feels empathy with the death of Mr. Scott.
One of the themes that I can constantly see in society is economic division. Those divisions can
sometimes be harmful directly and indirectly to society. People from high–class society tend to
segregate those who do not compare to them, but not all of high–class people can act for pettiness.
One of the specific characteristics which is imparted to a character in this story is humility and
empathy. I believe that in this specific story, Laura has changed along the story in the eyes of the
reader since at the beginning, she was in charge of the set–up of the Garden Party,

The Garden Party By Katherine Mansfield
Laura Sheridan: A Bright Light in a Dark World
Laura Sheridan is someone described by the narrator who knows how things should be done to be
fair and respectable to others, but she doesn't always get to follow through with how she feels. The
narrator does not give an exact age for her, although it is quite clear she is a young woman living at
home with her parents and siblings. Laura at times gets caught in her own emotions trying to please
others and satisfy herself at the same time. She follows the rules as she was raised to, in a large
home with her wealthy family, and yet she is unsatisfied, seeming to want a simpler life. The short
story "The Garden Party" by Katherine Mansfield suggests Laura Sheridan is very different from her

'Stop the garden–party? My dear Laura, don 't be so absurd. Of course we can 't do anything of the
kind. Nobody expects us to. Don 't be so extravagant." Laura 's mother has almost the same reaction,
pressuring Laura to think the same as them and continue on with the party. The narrator writes of an
area of trees that could be a reflection of Laura herself, a beautiful soul being hidden away: "Then
the karaka–trees would be hidden. And they were so lovely, with their broad, gleaming leaves, and
their clusters of yellow fruit. They were like trees you imagined growing on a desert island, proud,
solitary, lifting their leaves and fruits to the sun in a kind of silent splendour. Must they be hidden by
a marquee? " Laura is the same way, always trying to be seen for doing what is right, but instead
being hidden away for the sake of others feelings and opinions.
Laura battles an inner conflict with wanting to do what 's right in several situations. The moment
Laura hears of the man 's death, she knows the party must be canceled out of respect for the stranger
who has passed and his family. Laura is the only one who feels this way in her home: "But we can 't
possibly have a garden–party with a man dead just outside the front gate. And just think of what the
band would sound like to that poor woman." When Laura addresses this issue with her mother, she

A Comparison Of Death In The Garden Party And Frankenstein
Death as a theme in storytelling has always been popular for centuries. Experiencing someone
important dying is an idea people have an inherent connection to. The difference is how one
perceives death and how one deals with it on an emotional level. There are countless examples of
books with different, unique interpretations of death, but this essay will focus on just two: Katherine
Mansfield's The Garden Party and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Both of these stories have main
characters that must come to terms with death, but the ways they go about it and the conclusions
they come to are vastly different. Death as a literary device to shows the benefits of freedom in
accepting situations that people do not have the power to change in both The Garden Party and
Frankenstein by showing opposite ways one can handle death and the results of those choices.
Death in The Garden Party evolves from being a horrible part of our existence into being a beautiful,
peaceful conclusion of someone's life. This change in perception comes to the main character,
Laura, as she matures from a child into an adult. As Laura changes throughout the story she goes
from treating death as a tragedy to accepting it as a natural event in everyone's life. After she visits
the woman whose husband died the narrator states "What did garden–parties and baskets and lace
frocks matter to him? He was far from all those things" (Mansfield 81). This interpretation of
Laura's feelings by the narrator shows how now she thinks death is not such a horrible event, but
rather can be a positive outcome of sorts. To Laura, death can free a person from the material world
and all of its frivolous inhabitants. Growing up with her well–off family, particularly her mother, put
a great deal of emphasis on money and material possession. Experiencing death for the first time
introduces Laura to the elements of life that are more important than owning expensive stuff. The
theme of death in The Garden Party is a method for demonstrating the growth of Laura as a person.
Loss and death in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is a major plot device throughout the entirety of the
novel. Victor Frankenstein catalyzed the events of the book with his obsession with immortality.

Life can be considered to be unfair. There are rich people and poor people. There are the lucky and
the unlucky ones. There are the dead and there are the alive. "The Garden Party" by Katherine
Mansfield talks about class distinction and the meaning of life. The story starts with the narrator
talking about the early moments that are happening in the garden. The garden is beautiful, laden
with all the pretty flowers and trees. The weather is perfect, like it is meant to be a gift from the
heavens. The future is bright like the weather. Vibrant, but still very serene. There is already a
gardener working in the garden, making sure that it is perfect looking and in tip–top shape. But the

Sheridan. But then again, Mrs. Sheridan is already with the two and intervenes with the situation.
She says that she was just passing the flower shop the other day and was fascinated by all those
lilies when she saw them. And she makes the garden party as a great excuse to buy a lot of lilies.
Laura thinks her mother wouldn't interfere, but her mother says otherwise. While the florist's man
unloads the rest of the lilies, Meg and others are just done moving the piano in the drawing room.
Jose barks orders including moving the sofa and the tables, as she loves giving orders while servants
love obeying her. Now she wants to test out the piano by playing "This Life is Weary". Then again,
she makes a sour expression while singing the song. Before she can continue to sing, Sadie
interrupted the ladies about having the flags for the sandwiches. Mrs. Sheridan tells Sadie that the
cook will have the flags in a little while. Mrs. Sheridan then asks Laura to come with her to write the
names for her, and tells Jose to pacify the cook because she is "terrified of her this morning"
(Mansfield 341). Once Laura wrote the names, she speeds off to the kitchen where she

"The budding rose above the rose full blown," writes William Henry Wordsworth, elevating the
process of emerging, changing and evolving over those already developed, established and matured.
While Wordsworth's remark regards a rose, the statement also accurately describes Katherine
Mansfield's protagonist in The Garden Party. The narrative focuses on a wealthy family from New
Zealand, jaded by elite lifestyle and prominent social standing. The youngest daughter, Laura, "the
budding rose" of the story, seeks to break the constraints of upper class society, causing her to be
both more mature and compassionate than other members of her well to do family.

Mansfield created the story with the intention of allowing it to be open for various interpretations;
though she includes specific detail concerning the characters Mansfield does not elucidate them in a
manner that clearly defines their personalities. The story, like the budding rose, is one that never
peaks to maturity, but rather remains in the developing stage because of its ambiguities which cause
it to be discussed and interpreted in many varying ways.
The Sheridans are an affluent family of New Zealand; they are prominent and social, often hosting
parties and luncheons for other families of the same social rank. They live in a world protected from
the realities of life such as poverty, death, and unhappiness, and this bubble contains all the joy,
perfection, and grandeur that is stereotypically accompanied with having an abundance of wealth.
As a whole, the Sheridan family is one–dimensional; they cannot see beyond their own way of life,
and cannot comprehend the hardships faced by others. The family consists primarily of cold and self
absorbed individuals, but these characteristics are only revealed when their way of life is challenged
or infringed upon; often they appear to be lovely, happy, and fortuitous citizens who are enjoying the
benefits of their propitious life.

Analysis Of Katherine Mansfield 's ' The Garden Party ' Essay
Kelsey Archuleta Ms. Sparks AP Lit p.6 8 December 2016 Title Katherine Mansfield was a
modernist short story writer during the 1920's. She wrote various short stories in the few years as an
author, Mansfield 's stories often commented on class, relationships, families, and sexuality, After
reading a few of her most popular works the common theme of them though out was the central
conclusion of them all is the protagonist coming of age by seeing the more realistic view on life. The
common theme aids Mansfield's in communicating to her readers the idea of one finally seeing the
truths in his or hers personal lifestyles. Mansfield carries this central theme in all stories by using
literary devices such as imagery and symbols. Mansfield's stories contain her protagonist living in a
situation where they are blinded by others or societies standards on how they should think or feel.
For example Laura in 'The Garden Party ', is confronted with the reality of death. Mansfield
introduces the story by explaining the extravagant garden party Laura's mother is allowing her to
plan. The details of Laura ordering around staff and the whole complexity of it all leads readers to
believe that Laura and her family are of higher class. Because of this Laura has not been introduces
to the realities of life such as Death. She has also been taught that because of her class other below

Katherine Mansfield 's The Garden Party
Often time's children are reared to believe in the values and morals of their family. Family traditions
and beliefs are expected to be followed and obeyed. However, Laura Sheridan is a young girl from a
rich family. She has an innocent mind and contradicts her family's morals. The morals that the
reader views about Laura are strong in the fact that she challenges with most of the rich viewpoints
that her family has. Katherine Mansfield's usage of characters in "The Garden Party" illustrates the
contradiction of values between the upper class and lower class, yet it also seems that Laura and
Laurie, who is more like his upper class family, are twins. Laura has different values than her family.
Laura states, "'But we can 't possibly have a garden party with a man dead just outside the front
gate,'" indicating that Laura is willing to throw away the whole big party that she planned, because a
man from the poorer community had dies. However, the rest of Laura's family believes that the party
should go on because the man is below them in class. Laura's mother tells her that they still had to
have the party, so "Laura had to say 'yes' to that, but [Laura] felt it was all wrong." Even though
Laura did not agree with what her mother was saying about the party going on, she had to give in
because nobody was being reasonable or listening to her. This proves that Laura has a different
mindset than the other upper class people at the party. After the party, the mother insists on Laura

critics have talked about. Jennifer Rich says that The Garden Party, was the work of the growth of a

Miss Brill is a spinster who is a very lonely woman who doesn't have much more than the students
she teaches. As in some of her other important works she is a lonely character. The character's
appearance in Miss Brill greatly reflects the thoughts and issues that could have been going on in
her life. Robert Peltier notices how well she conveys herself while she was a young writer. He gives
examples as to how she gives great detail into the lives of her characters in this story. Miss Brill has
a very boring life, she goes through the same routine every single day and when she goes against the
flow of things everything falls apart. It shows how she is not contempt with the life she has and tries
to do something new and shows her the life she has is much better than anything else she could've
been doing. This is a great example of her use in epiphany, which also somewhat shows up in The
Garden Party. The same type problem is prominent in The Garden Party, where the girl is not
contempt with the life she has and finally comes to a realization where other people have it much
worse than she does. Clare Hanson and Andrew Gurr agree that Miss Brill is a very emotional story
that has many good points. They also agree like in many other stories on how she uses symbolism to

Katherine Mansfield 's The Garden Party
Katherine Mansfield's "The Garden Party" tells the tale of a young, affluent Laura Sheridan and her
encounters with the working class when a man dies on the day of her family's social gathering.
Although Laura's sense of self has long been molded by her upper middle class Victorian society,
Laura develops compassion, empathy, and awareness that distinguish her from her family. During
her interactions with the workmen and the dead Mr. Scott, Laura proves through her reactions,
diction, and actions that she will unroot herself from her family's vain lifestyle. Laura's exchange
with the workers as they set up for the garden party is the first indication that she will stray from the
road of ignorance displayed by her family. While some might argue that Laura's interaction with the
workmen is too brief to have a lasting impact on her, it is Laura's response to the workers and her
self–awareness–NOT the brevity of the communication– that distinguish her from her family. After
running out to meet the men, she at first mimics the stilted tone of her mother's "good morning". Yet
without waiting for a reaction from the men, she is instantly aware of how "fearfully affected" she
sounds and becomes "ashamed" (Mansfield, 618). While any grown individual might have had to
wait for a look of disgust or annoyance, Laura is aware of how pretentious her voice sounds when
she speaks like her mother. Instead of holding an air of superficiality like Mrs. Sheridan would have,

main characters that must come to terms with death but the ways they go about it and the
conclusions they come to are vastly different. Death is used as a literary device to show the benefits
of letting go and acceptance of things that people can not change in both The Garden Party and
Frankenstein by showing opposite ways one can handle death and the results of those choices.
Death in The Garden Party evolves from being a horrible thing that happens to be a beautiful,
peaceful conclusion of someone's life.
This interpretation of
Laura's feelings by the narrator shows how now she

Winter Dreams And The Garden Party
Winter Dreams and The Garden Party I have chosen two short stories the first one being F. Scott
Fitzgerald's Winter Dreams and the second one being Katherine Mansfield's The Garden Party.
"Winter Dreams" was written in and published in 1922, and so was "The Garden Party". "Winter
Dreams" takes place during the winter months and we find the main character Dexter Green skiing
on the golf course that he is a caddie for during the golf season. During the offseason, Dexter's
imagination becomes more and more powerful. He thinks of himself as one of the best golfers and
he imagines himself beating some of the more esteemed members of the golf course. When the
spring comes, Dexter runs into a lady by the name of Judy Jones. Judy asks ... Show more content

As the story goes, the book travels back in time to when Dex was twenty–three and when he was
granted a weekend pass back to his old stomping grounds by one of the prominent figures he used to
caddy for. There he runs into Judy and then while waiting to go on a date, he realizes just how much
of a difference there is between their social classes. Dexter realizes he will never be able to marry
her and eventually becomes engaged, but that falls apart, and by age thirty–two Dexter becomes
more successful than ever before. A business associate of his notifies him that his love Judy has
since married and was in a disaster of a relationship. The Garden Party takes place in early in the
20th century at the estate of a wealthy family in New Zealand. It was interesting story in the way
that it portrayed the upper class in a not so fashionable way. In the story, Laura's family is throwing
a huge garden party. However, next door there is a family who is not so well off and they just lost
the family patriarch in a tragic carriage accident, and yet her family insists on having the party
delayed to pay respects to the next door neighbors. However, her self–centered family members
refuse to, saying there is no need to cancel their party. Her sister goes on to even say when referring
to the man who died, "You won't bring a drunk workman back to life by being sentimental."

Epiphary In Katherine Mansfield's The Garden Party
There are many reasons behind an author's story. Mainly it is to portray a message, give a good
laugh, or explain a purpose, but the author will get their point across to their readers. In Katherine
Mansfield's, "The Garden Party," she focuses on a young, upperclass girl, with the name of Laura
Sheridan. During the story, the Sheridan family is preparing to host a very lively garden party.
Unfortunately for the circumstance, there has been a death in their community. The Scott family,
who is of the middle class, had just lost their husband and their father. The wake for Mr. Scott just
so happens to be during the time of the garden party. The separation of classes causes an unsettling
act of sympathy from Laura. She can not decide whether to be on the right side or the wrong side of
the situation. The death of Mr. Scott allows Laura Sheridan to experience an epiphany, as she
encounters the difference's between the upper and middle classes, life and death, and a new
perspective of life. Many people are often judged by their appearances, living arrangements, or
income status. That is how the world views and classifies people to place them in a hierarchical
stature.
There were a few middle class workers hired to set up a marquee at the Sheridan house. Since Laura
was considered to be the "artistic one" (EastoftheWeb 2) of her siblings, she was chosen to conduct
the hired workers on where to set up the marquee. During her time as supervisor, she overhears a
tragic story one of

Sonny's Blues And The Garden Party Analysis
It has been said that in life all a person needs is one person to believe in you or impact you to make
a difference in one's life. In the two short stories: Sonny's Blues and The Garden Party, two
contrasting characters had been impacted by another character in each story. Sonny's Blues by James
Baldwin and The Garden Party by Katherine Mansfield are very different but they have many
similarities. The Garden Party is about the Sheridan family who come from an upper class family in
20th century New Zealand, who are holding a garden party. Sonny's Blues on the other hand is about
a man that is in prison for a heroin addiction and is a story based in Harlem New York, a
predominantly black neighborhood in New York City that was notorious for poverty, crime and
substance abuse. The characters both come from very different walks of life, and both come from
very different cultures, yet they are both similar in other ways. Sonny's Blues by James Baldwin and
The Garden Party by Katherine Mansfield are very different but they both have secondary characters
that exert influence in their stories.
First of all, in the story Sonny's Blues, Sonny exerted influence into the life of his brother (who is
the unnamed narrator) in the story. The story is about two brothers that have two very different lives.
The older brother (which is the unnamed narrator), is an algebra teacher, while his younger brother
named Sonny is in prison for selling and using heroin. Both Sonny and his brother lead

Symbolism In Katherine Mansfield's The Garden-Party
The short story I choose from the book is called The Garden–Party by Katherine Mansfield. The
story takes place in a rich family and they are ready to have a garden party; however, in the poorer
neighborhood across the street, there is a young man just died in an accident, and when the youngest
daughter Laura hears about that, she wants to cancel the party and show some respect to the poor
family, but her mother and sister think Laura's idea is naive and unbelievable; a rich family like
them do not need to sacrifice to the poor family and Laura is being extravagant. In Katherine
Mansfield's story "The Garden–Party" she does not only talk about the party in the family, happiness
atmosphere in the party and family relationship but also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
No doubt, adults from middle–class love to take orders from a junior girl. Through her language, she
feels comfortable to give demands directly to lower class people who are older than her and it seems
like that is the only power Jose has. It later becomes clear she views the lower classes as lesser
beings than her, as when she's confronted by Laura about stopping the party she says "Stop the
garden–party? My dear Laura, don't be so absurd. Of course, we can't do anything of the kind.
Nobody expects us to. Don't be so extravagant" (Mansfield 1309). Jose's reaction would give reader
a clear image that how upper class men treat upper class women as well. However, Laura does not.
At the beginning, Laura tries to act and talk like her mother and sister would do, but in a polite way.
After she notices that those people are nice to her, she changes the way she talks. Due to that, Laura
is a very sensitive girl and kind girl who does not feel she is privileged than lower classes. In
additional, that is probably why Laura is the only one who shows sympathy for the dead man. In the

Mansfield calls as perfectly good food to the dead man's family. Even though Laura thinks that it is

In every story, the journey the hero commences on makes them unique compared to the other
characters in the story. The hero is the main person that grows, changes, and gains new perspective

positive qualities such as being hard working and determined to focus on the negative qualities. In
his eyes the negative qualities he sees is Sonny being an addict, skipping college classes, and
running away from home to join the army. However, when the Narrator sees Sonny play for the first
time in the jazz club, it makes the Narrator see Sonny in a whole new light, for who he truly is.
"And Sonny went all the way back, he really began with the spare, flat statement of the opening
phase of the song. Then he began to make it his. It was very beautiful because it wasn't hurried and
it was no longer a lament. I seemed to hear with what burning he had made his with what burning
we had yet to make it ours, how we could cease lamenting." (Baldwin 49). Sonny reaches
accomplishment by becoming musician like he had always wanted. However, in the story if the

reader does not know who he truly is as a character. In the story The Garden Party unlike Sonny and

Analysis Of ' Barn Burning ' And ' Garden Party '
When does one come of age? This question has been answered and dictated by different cultures
from the beginning of time. Is there a certain number of years? Does one have to participate in an
event or ceremony? Is there a moment of revelation where one suddenly feels different? The stories
of "Barn Burning" and "Garden Party" both offer stories where the protagonist "comes of age."
These tales bring the readers along and has them experience the trials and self–realizing experiences

The And The Garden Party Essay
A social totality is not a concept born of mere delicate measure but of a grand scheme of aspects – of
mixed languages and customs in a society or the social and economic class and the way those two
intertwine. One of the best ways of defining a concept is to understand what it is not, or in a story,
the characters that do not define it. Stories such as Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert and "The
Garden Party" by Katherine Mansfield both define the borders of the social totalities of their worlds
by writing clear characters – Emma Bovary and Laura – that do not belong within that social realm.
When stuck in their respective worlds that they grow up in, Emma and Laura believe they
understand life because they know their places in the familiarity of what they have always known,
but when they become exposed to that breach of their individual worlds, their knowledge is
expanded to that of a social totality beyond what they knew. They no longer understand how to fit
into their worlds because they do not relate to any of it, leaving them with a sense of discomfort and
loneliness, longing for something more. The idea of writing a social totality comes from a process of
building a society believable enough that the reader can immerse themselves into the story without
strain, all the while incorporating solid facts of that society to make it seem realistic. As described
by Georg Lukacs , "The goal for all great art is to provide a picture of reality in which the

Essay on Katherine Mansfield's Garden Party
Set in colonial New Zealand, "The Garden Party" falls into two clearly different parts. A lot of the
story is about the preparations and the consequences of the garden party, it was organized by the
daughters of the privileged Sheridan family. As dawn breaks, Laura goes into the Sheridan's
exquisite garden to inspect the proposed site for the marquee. Her encounter with three workers
hired to raise the tent is awkward and confused, as she finds herself torn between being a snob and
her developing sense of morality. This story is perceived as the difference between life and death,
and can sometimes be portrayed in objects. (Death is symbolized by the broken cakes and dried–out

When Laura caught a glimpse of her self in her mirror after asking her mom about the party¸ she
starts to admire herself in the black hat she was wearing and the thought of the laborer faded farther

Laura's family seems to be unappreciative of the laborers hard work, its seems to not bother any of
the other family member but her. Laura's moms can only think if the worker died in the garden or
not. Her mother being stuck in her own world doesn't dwell on that idea too much and still wants to

okay to go through with the party and she is also stuck in her clouded rich world.
When Laura is sent down to the laborers cottages she feels and is entirely over dressed. When she is

"The Garden Party" Revisions
The first thing a reader notices when reading "Garden Party" by Katherine Mansfield is the title. A
garden party is a social event, which usually implies friends are invited, there is eating, and
exchanging of social niceties, gossip, and other conversation; this can be called communion. In How
to Read Literature Like a Professor Mr. Foster states "whenever people eat and/or drink together it's
communion" and "not all communions are holy". An act of communion brings people together and
provides a place for fellowship. A garden party is also a symbol of wealth, which is also, supported
the main character, Laura. She can be quoted in the following situations; "Laura's upbringing made
her wonder for a moment whether it was quite respectful of a workman to talk to her of bangs slap
in the eye" and "It's all the fault...of these absurd class distinctions". Both of these statements give
proof that in the period this story was set, the wealthy were separated from the poverty–stricken
through social class. As a result of the class distinctions, she was frequently barred from interacting
with what was thought to be the 'lower' class.
The question Laura asks herself and others is whether it is acceptable to have a garden party when a
man died and left his family in such poor circumstances. She is seemingly very distraught when she
hears the news, frantically wondering how she can cancel the party in such short time, this
demonstrates compassion, she is still young enough that she hasn't fully adhered to the attitude of
the wealthy. When Laura confronts Jose with her questions, Jose thinks Laura is being too dramatic
and says that no one expects them to cancel the party. Her mother behaves, in the same manner,
saying, "You are being very absurd Laura, people like that don't expect sacrifices from us." Notice
she says 'people like that' as if their lack of money and social standing is something to be frowned
upon, that because they are not in the same social class they are not worth thinking about or are not
deserving of respect or sympathy. Mansfield is using this short story to call attention to the barring
between social classes

Essay On Weather Plants
Those of us with gardens in Connecticut, especially along the sound, have always been on the edge
of things warmer. We dreamed of warmer weather plants such as camellias, sweet box, gold dust
plant and crape myrtle in our coastal gardens. A few brave gardeners have planted these southern
beauties in protected corners and gone to great lengths to protect their prized garden gems from
winter's cold fingers. Now with warmer temperatures and winters moderating these garden beauties
can be included in our plant palette.

Another staple of southern gardens is Crapemyrtle (Lagerstroemia indica). There are many Crape
myrtles hybrid that are mostly hardy to USDA Zone 7, but can be killed to the ground in severe
winters. There are a few varieties that are root hardy to Zone 6 and can be treated as perennials.
Lagerstroemia fauriei is known to be reliably hardy to USDA Zone 6, but avoid planting them on a
south–facing wall where the winter sun might break their dormancy too early. Zone 6 hardy or root
hardy Crapemyrtles include: Lagerstroemia indica 'Burgundy Cotton', L. indica 'Red Rocket', L.
indica 'Tightwad', L. indica 'Becky's Watermelon Red', L. 'Sarahs Favorite' and L. fauriei cultivars –
'Bashams Party Pink', 'Biloxi', 'Choctaw', 'Hopi'. The Fleming Filigrees cultivars are hardy to USDA
Zone 4.
Local microclimates can affect plant health and survivability in your area so be aware if your area
tends to be colder or warmer than the norm indicated on the USDA Zone Map. Often properties near
to lakes or ponds will have a more moderate air temperature and possibly a zone warmer, whereas if
you are in a valley the cold air tends to settle so you may be a bit colder. Urban areas, because of the
heat island effect of the mass of asphalt and buildings tend to make them a zone warmer than
surrounding non–urban areas. Some areas with more consistent snow cover can consider planting
species that are from a zone warmer, since the root zone is insulated during the winter months.
How will this

Analysis Of Hillbilly Elegy And The Garden Party
A child's family plays a big role in his or her life. Their family may affect the child's future, but
doesn't always have to. Some children choose to break free from their familial molds to become a
better person, and some children do so without realizing it. In the short story "The Garden Party",
and the memoir Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, family plays an
important role in the protagonists' lives. "The Garden Party", written by Katherine Mansfield, is
about an upper class family throwing a party despite the news of the death of a neighbor. Laura, the
protagonist, feels the need to stop the party as to not be disrespectful, but her family insists on
throwing it. Hillbilly Elegy, written by J.D. Vance, is about the struggles of the author as he grows
up in a lower class hillbilly family, and his journey to break free of the restraints his heritage has put
on him. Both Laura and J.D. have found fault within their families and wish to be different from
them, whether doing so consciously or not.
Laura, the main character in "The Garden Party", finds that she disagrees with some of her family
values, when the news gets out about the death of one of their neighbors. The day that the story
takes place, Laura's family is throwing a huge garden party to which many guests will attend. Just
before the party will begin, Laura learns that man has died just outside the property. As soon as she
hears the news, Laura wants to stop the party completely, but her family doesn't understand. "'Jose!'
she said, horrified, 'however are we going to stop everything?'/ 'Stop everything, Laura!' cried Jose
in astonishment. 'What do you mean?'/ 'Stop the garden–party, of course'" (6–7). Laura is appalled
that a man has just died so close to where she lives, and her family doesn't seem to be phased. When
Laura goes to her other family members, they brush her off, just as Jose did. The fact that Laura
seems odd to her family about how concerned she is with the dead man, shows something about
their values. The Sheridans are very materialistic people and seem not to care about those lower in
class than they are. To try and distract her daughter from the news, Mrs. Sheridan gives Laura a hat

Similar Themes in A Rose for Emily, The Garden Party, and...
Short stories often have various underlying themes and meanings to them and can often be
compared to other stories to find those same meanings. Occasionally, you need to dig deeper to find
these hidden meanings. The three short stories, A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, The Garden
Party by Katherine Mansfield, and Everyday Use by Alice Walker all share some similar themes and
ideas that require some digging to uncover and bring to the surface. The main analysis this essay
with cover is comparing how the three stories discuss and express class and heritage, as well as how
death can cause people to not only think things in a different way but also how death can open your
eyes to something you never would have seen otherwise. Another thing that is potentially easily
missed is how each of the individuals writing styles and backgrounds affect the ground work of the
stories and how they progress. The first of the three stories is called A Rose for Emily (Faulkner,
1993). It is a story focused around Emily Grierson and the author divides the story into 5 parts or
sections. The story has a narrator that goes nameless for the entirety of the story. In section one of A
Rose for Emily (Faulkner, 1993) the narrator is recalling the death of Emily Grierson and how the
collective group of towns folk attend the funeral, which is located in her home. It also talks about
how after the death of Emily's father that the mayor of the town at the time suspended Emily's tax
responsibilities

The word 'Modernity' was first used by Baudelaire in the mid–nineteenth century. He describes
modernity as the fashionable, fleeting and contingent in art, in opposition to the eternal and

Associations with the modernist genre were seen as innovation and novelty. Typical aspects of this

Comparing Miss Brill And The Garden Party By Katherine...
In language, the term 'conversation' is commonly understood as a discussion engaged between two
or more people. This form of verbal communication enables news and new ideas to be exchanged
and shared. However, within literature, a conversation is far more nuanced by a result of written
work having a greater context which lies beneath the words. The construction of a conversation
within the literary text is forever a creation made by the author themselves. The act of creating this
conversation by the author is both revealing for an in–depth reading of the text but most

Therefore in the concise nature of the form, any conversational element must have a significant role
within the text. Within Mansfield's Miss Brill, the contrast in the unreliable narration and dialogue in
conversation, are employed to highlight the stories main theme of reality versus fantasy. The stories
detached narrative style provides a convincing platform for Miss Brill's facade, creating the initial
impression that Miss Brill's life is flawless. In the stories inception, the narration establishes Miss
Brill's delusional fantasy, through the weather much like The Garden Party which begins on a
perfect day. In Miss Brill, the blue sky which is 'powdered with gold and great spots of light' shines
down. The language evokes a description worthy of a painting rather than a true autumn sky. This is
a purposeful technique by Mansfield as the sky is a symbolic mirroring of Miss Brill's attempts to
cloud her harsh reality with delusions of grandeur and beauty. The introduction of a perfect fantasy
is critical to the story as this is juxtaposed when the reader is confronted with the later realisation of
Miss Brill's reality through the role of conversation. (add more) (Free indirect discourse needs to be

turns out that the man who died left behind "five little ones and a wife". The man died because he
was thrown from "his horse and landed on his head". The man was "a carter" and he lived down the
road from Laura and her family. After Laura hears of what has happened to the man she goes to Jose
and says, "However are we going to stop everything?" Laura gets in this fight with her sister about
stopping this party. Her sister says, "You won 't bring a drunken workman back to life by being
sentimental" Jose says this to Laura because she is getting very annoyed with Laura; also she just
wants her to stop trying to cancel the party. Well Laura goes now to tell her mother the same thing
that she tried telling her sister. Laura's mother says this to her "People like that don 't expect

Analysis Of Katherine Mansfield 's ' The Garden Party '
Both L.P Hartley and Katherine Mansfield present the poor as suffering as a result of the happiness
of the rich. Within both texts, 'The Go–Between' and 'The Garden Party', the poor are shown to
suffer but they are presented in two different ways. L.P Hartley presents one of the main characters,
who is a rich, middle class woman manipulating a poor boy who visits from boarding school
through making him a messenger between her and her working class lover. Whereas, Mansfield
presents the rich to ignore the poor suffering rather than as direct victims of the happiness of the
rich.
In 'The Garden Party', Katherine Mansfield presents the rich to show unawareness of the poor within
their neighbourhood in order to contain their happiness. The main character, Laura starts off within a
middle class bubble that she has been isolated within all her life. Through her upbringing she has
been protected which has resulted in her unawareness of the 'real' world. Between them all, the
Sheridan family are organising a party, when it takes a turn for the worse. Laura is faced with death.
Laura is the only one concerned at this point by the death of Mr. Scott, a local working class man.
However, her sister, Jose is not touched by this tragedy. The quote "Stop the garden–party? My dear
Laura, don 't be so absurd" clearly presents the selfishness within her sister's voice, who is also part
of the middle class 'bubble' that she is not prepared to break for the sake of anyone, especially not

(Mansfield, 123) That just

The Garden Party Analysis

  • 1. The Garden Party Analysis A Dream's Weary Awakening Life is as wonderful as death is mysterious. Death holds true promise, the only inevitability for one's future. With one hand it steals life and with the other it attempts to steal all joyous innocence of any who knew the departed. It leaves nothing but the promise to one day steal their life as well. In 1915 Katherine Mansfield lived this tragedy when her beloved younger brother passed away, and she was soon after diagnosed with extrapulmonary tuberculosis, which ultimately lead to her death in 1923. In her story "The Garden Party" Katherine Mansfield enthralls her readers as she immerses them into her journey of facing death through the eyes of the lovely young girl; Laura, whose innocence radiates throughout her enchanting world, discovers the harsh reality of society's selfish heart, the grief of death, and the wonders it holds. Laura, an innocent young girl, sees her life as charming and blissful. On a warm, golden hazed summer day, the Sheridans' home buzzed with excitement. The day of the garden party was "ideal... [w]indless, warm, the sky without a cloud," perfectly representative of Laura and the author. Her entire life is charming– utterly bursting with life. Being the "artistic one," she flies about their home arranging and exploring the chaos. Laura's eyes are attentive to detail and all the "silent splendor" enveloping nature. In an encounter with several workmen Laura finds them to be "extraordinarily nice." Although Laura is aware ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Katherine Mansfield 's The Garden Party Foster begins this chapter with Katherine Mansfield's The Garden Party. It is about a girl, Laura, setting up a garden party. Her mother, Mrs. Sheridan let her prepare the garden party for the first time, so she wants to make it the best. While doing the preparations for the party, Laura hears about the recent death of a man in the little cottages down the hill. Because of this, she tries to convince her sister and mother to cancel the party. How could they celebrate when a neighbor just passed away? However, the both of them tell Laura that it is not their problem that someone had died and that it is not worth it to put away all the preparations done for the party. From this, the reader can see that Jose, the sister and Mrs. Sheridan do not really care about the people who are not as fortunate as them. Mrs. Sheridan distracts Laura from the topic by giving her a hat. The garden party starts and is very successful. After it ends, Mr. Sheridan brings up the story about the man that had just died and Mrs. Sheridan decides that they should give the family their leftover food. Laura walks down to the cottages with a big basket of food. She wants to cover herself because she is dressed extravagantly while the other neighbors down the hill are not. Laura goes into the widow's house and meets the man's sister in law, Em. She takes her to see the deceased man and Laura cries. After this, Laura leaves and meets her brother, Laurie at the corner of the road. She ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Garden Party Analysis THE GARDEN–PARTY "The Garden Party" is a 1922 short story by Katherine Mansfield. It was first published in the Saturday Westminster Gazette on 4 February 1922, then in the Weekly Westminster Gazette on 18 February 1922. It later appeared in The Garden Party: and Other Stories. [1] Its luxurious setting is based on Mansfield's childhood home at Tinakori Road, Wellington. Plot summary The Sheridan family is preparing to host a garden party. Laura is supposed to be in charge but has trouble with the workers who appear to know better, and her mother (Mrs. Sheridan) has ordered lilies to be delivered for the party without Laura's approval. Her sister Jose tests the piano, and then sings a song in case she is asked to do so again later. After ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the festivities end and the family members gather in the marquee for coffee, Mr. Sheridan broaches the subject of the fatal accident, saying how horrible it must be for the wife and children to cope. The family goes silent. Laura thinks, "Really it was very tactless of father . . . ," but does not finish her thought. Her mother then decides to send a basket of uneaten sandwiches and pastries down to the Scotts. Whether she sincerely wants to help–or simply wishes to get rid of the leftovers or assuage a feeling of guilt about the Scotts–is arguable. At any rate, Laura agrees to take the basket. After walking down the hill from her home, she crosses a wide road and enters the environs of the common folk. Here, Laura faces a severe test: She wished now she had put on a coat. How her frock shone! And the big hat with the velvet streamer–if only it was another hat! Were the people looking at her? They must be. It was a mistake to have come; she knew all along it was a mistake. Should she go back even now? But she continues on, meets the family, and sees the dead man. The experience is not at all horrible, as she thought it would be. He was dreaming. Never wake him up again. His head was sunk in the pillow, his eyes were closed; they were blind under the closed eyelids. He was given up to his dream. What did garden–parties and baskets and lace ... • 7. Symbolism In Katherine Mansfield's The Garden Party "The Garden Party" by Katherine Mansfield is a short story about a wealthy family having, as the title would suggest, a garden party. More specifically the story follows the inner turmoil of the youngest daughter, Laura. She has no choice but to see her family's true colors when a poorer neighbor passes away. Laura's family sees her as childish because of her kind nature but she receives a rude awakening that causes her to mature greatly at the end of the story. It appears that Laura has led a very sheltered life, which is the reason she acts so childish. When presented with the opportunity to "eat out of doors" that the garden party provides, she becomes excited and feels somewhat rebellious, which implies she follows a strict set of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She believes entirely that her mother will agree with her. She feels shocked and asks; "Mother, isn't it terribly heartless of us?" which shows how disappointed in herself she would be were she to continue with the garden party. Laura's doubts disappear when her mother presents her with a beautiful hat and tells her she is being "extravagant" in trying to prevent the party from happening. Any time the death comes again to her attention, she immediately returns to her guilt over the situation. Repeatedly her beautiful hat and lace frock receive attention, as in Laura's conversation with her brother that reads: "'My word, Laura! You do look stunning,' said Laurie. 'What an absolutely topping hat!'" This repetition may symbolize materialism and the superficial differences between the rich and the poor. When not influenced by others to prioritize appearances, Laura seems to understand that none of the rules that dictate who is influential in society matters. The same kindness that makes Laura's family see her as naive is the precise trait that makes her the most mature of them. At the end of the story, Laura seems to have some kind of great revelation upon seeing the dead man. She marvels at how peaceful he looks and is again ashamed of her own trivial problems such as the placement of the marquee in front of the trees she found the most beautiful, thinking "What did garden–parties and baskets and ... We either have the choice of being kind individuals that contribute goodness to the world or become people that commit heinous crimes against our society. In the literary stories of Gilgamesh and "The Garden party" there were some comparisons and differences in the ideology of the literary text and some come consequences that arise from the one of the characters the one of the literary story. Utnapishtim said, "There is a plant that grows under the water, it has a prickle like a thorn, like a rose; it will wound your hands, but if you succeed in taking it, then your hands will hold that which restores his lost youth to a man. Gilgamesh was strong enough to take a piece of the plant, but a serpent stole it from him, so he went back to having nothing. He always wanted to help himself rather than help his people. His mindset was very relative to the literary piece Furthermore, to expound on a interesting literary piece. A lot of the story is about the preparations and the consequences of the garden party, it was organized by the daughters of the privileged Sheridan family. As dawn breaks, Laura goes into the Sheridan's exquisite garden to inspect the proposed site for the marquee. Her encounter with three workers hired to raise the tent is awkward and confused, as she finds herself torn between being a snob and her developing sense of morality. This story is perceived as the difference between life and death, and can sometimes be portrayed in objects. When Laura caught a glimpse of herself in her mirror after asking her mom about the party¸ she starts to admire herself in the black hat she was wearing and the thought of the laborer faded farther and farther into the back of her mind. The short stories "Sweat" and "The Garden Party" are both different and similar in more than one way. Although the use of structure and symbolism are different, but the tones in these stories are quite similar. First of all the use tones. In both "Sweat" and "The Garden Party", the attitudes the authors have about the topics are sympathetic and caring, some may even think they are worried or frustrated. • 15. Analysis Of The Garden Party By Mansfield The main idea for an interpretation of a deeper meaning of the story, The Garden Party by Mansfield, is relating life, and death to be held hand–in–hand. In other words, one day I can live happy and think I can be eternal but death is always near. I don't usually like to think about death because it can be something scary and overwhelming. Although in this story, I can see that Mrs. Sheridan is a woman from a high–class society. A family that is concerned about with what other people think and the fact of just having a blast every time they are able to. When Mrs. Sheridan heard about the death of Mr. Scott she felt pity for a moment, but continued her party arrangements. In contrast, her daughter, Laura, seemed more humane because when her mother thought about giving the party's leftovers to her neighbors, she felt that it was rude. Therefore, I can see that she feels empathy with the death of Mr. Scott. One of the themes that I can constantly see in society is economic division. Those divisions can sometimes be harmful directly and indirectly to society. People from high–class society tend to segregate those who do not compare to them, but not all of high–class people can act for pettiness. One of the specific characteristics which is imparted to a character in this story is humility and empathy. I believe that in this specific story, Laura has changed along the story in the eyes of the reader since at the beginning, she was in charge of the set–up of the Garden Party, ... The Garden Party By Katherine Mansfield Laura Sheridan: A Bright Light in a Dark World Laura Sheridan is someone described by the narrator who knows how things should be done to be fair and respectable to others, but she doesn't always get to follow through with how she feels. The narrator does not give an exact age for her, although it is quite clear she is a young woman living at home with her parents and siblings. Laura at times gets caught in her own emotions trying to please others and satisfy herself at the same time. She follows the rules as she was raised to, in a large home with her wealthy family, and yet she is unsatisfied, seeming to want a simpler life. The narrator writes of an area of trees that could be a reflection of Laura herself, a beautiful soul being hidden away: "Then the karaka–trees would be hidden. And they were so lovely, with their broad, gleaming leaves, and their clusters of yellow fruit. They were like trees you imagined growing on a desert island, proud, solitary, lifting their leaves and fruits to the sun in a kind of silent splendour. Must they be hidden by a marquee? Laura battles an inner conflict with wanting to do what 's right in several situations. The moment Laura hears of the man 's death, she knows the party must be canceled out of respect for the stranger who has passed and his family. Laura is the only one who feels this way in her home: "But we can 't possibly have a garden–party with a man dead just outside the front gate. • 19. A Comparison Of Death In The Garden Party And Frankenstein Death as a theme in storytelling has always been popular for centuries. Experiencing someone important dying is an idea people have an inherent connection to. The difference is how one perceives death and how one deals with it on an emotional level. There are countless examples of books with different, unique interpretations of death, but this essay will focus on just two: Katherine Mansfield's The Garden Party and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Both of these stories have main characters that must come to terms with death, but the ways they go about it and the conclusions they come to are vastly different. Death as a literary device to shows the benefits of freedom in accepting situations that people do not have the power to change in both The Garden Party and Frankenstein by showing opposite ways one can handle death and the results of those choices. Death in The Garden Party evolves from being a horrible part of our existence into being a beautiful, peaceful conclusion of someone's life. This change in perception comes to the main character, Laura, as she matures from a child into an adult. As Laura changes throughout the story she goes from treating death as a tragedy to accepting it as a natural event in everyone's life. After she visits the woman whose husband died the narrator states "What did garden–parties and baskets and lace frocks matter to him? He was far from all those things" (Mansfield 81). This interpretation of Laura's feelings by the narrator shows how now she thinks death is not such a horrible event, but rather can be a positive outcome of sorts. To Laura, death can free a person from the material world and all of its frivolous inhabitants. Growing up with her well–off family, particularly her mother, put a great deal of emphasis on money and material possession. Experiencing death for the first time introduces Laura to the elements of life that are more important than owning expensive stuff. The theme of death in The Garden Party is a method for demonstrating the growth of Laura as a person. Loss and death in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is a major plot device throughout the entirety of the novel. Victor Frankenstein catalyzed the events of the book with his obsession with immortality. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Laura thinks her mother wouldn't interfere, but her mother says otherwise. While the florist's man unloads the rest of the lilies, Meg and others are just done moving the piano in the drawing room. Jose barks orders including moving the sofa and the tables, as she loves giving orders while servants love obeying her. Now she wants to test out the piano by playing "This Life is Weary". Then again, she makes a sour expression while singing the song. Before she can continue to sing, Sadie interrupted the ladies about having the flags for the sandwiches. Mrs. Sheridan tells Sadie that the cook will have the flags in a little while. The Garden Party "The budding rose above the rose full blown," writes William Henry Wordsworth, elevating the process of emerging, changing and evolving over those already developed, established and matured. While Wordsworth's remark regards a rose, the statement also accurately describes Katherine Mansfield's protagonist in The Garden Party. The narrative focuses on a wealthy family from New Zealand, jaded by elite lifestyle and prominent social standing. The youngest daughter, Laura, "the budding rose" of the story, seeks to break the constraints of upper class society, causing her to be both more mature and compassionate than other members of her well to do family. The story, like the budding rose, is one that never peaks to maturity, but rather remains in the developing stage because of its ambiguities which cause it to be discussed and interpreted in many varying ways. The Sheridans are an affluent family of New Zealand; they are prominent and social, often hosting parties and luncheons for other families of the same social rank. They live in a world protected from the realities of life such as poverty, death, and unhappiness, and this bubble contains all the joy, perfection, and grandeur that is stereotypically accompanied with having an abundance of wealth. As a whole, the Sheridan family is one–dimensional; they cannot see beyond their own way of life, and cannot comprehend the hardships faced by others. • 25. Analysis Of Katherine Mansfield 's ' The Garden Party ' Essay Kelsey Archuleta Ms. Sparks AP Lit p.6 8 December 2016 Title Katherine Mansfield was a modernist short story writer during the 1920's. She wrote various short stories in the few years as an author, Mansfield 's stories often commented on class, relationships, families, and sexuality, After reading a few of her most popular works the common theme of them though out was the central conclusion of them all is the protagonist coming of age by seeing the more realistic view on life. The common theme aids Mansfield's in communicating to her readers the idea of one finally seeing the truths in his or hers personal lifestyles. Mansfield carries this central theme in all stories by using literary devices such as imagery and symbols. Mansfield's stories contain her protagonist living in a situation where they are blinded by others or societies standards on how they should think or feel. For example Laura in 'The Garden Party ', is confronted with the reality of death. Mansfield introduces the story by explaining the extravagant garden party Laura's mother is allowing her to plan. The details of Laura ordering around staff and the whole complexity of it all leads readers to believe that Laura and her family are of higher class. Because of this Laura has not been introduces to the realities of life such as Death. She has also been taught that because of her class other below her are "unacceptable" as her neighbors the Sheridans were unacceptable and "they were the greatest possible ... • 27. Katherine Mansfield 's The Garden Party Often time's children are reared to believe in the values and morals of their family. Family traditions and beliefs are expected to be followed and obeyed. However, Laura Sheridan is a young girl from a rich family. She has an innocent mind and contradicts her family's morals. The morals that the reader views about Laura are strong in the fact that she challenges with most of the rich viewpoints that her family has. Katherine Mansfield's usage of characters in "The Garden Party" illustrates the contradiction of values between the upper class and lower class, yet it also seems that Laura and Laurie, who is more like his upper class family, are twins. Laura has different values than her family. Laura states, "'But we can 't possibly have a garden party with a man dead just outside the front gate,'" indicating that Laura is willing to throw away the whole big party that she planned, because a man from the poorer community had dies. However, the rest of Laura's family believes that the party should go on because the man is below them in class. Laura's mother tells her that they still had to have the party, so "Laura had to say 'yes' to that, but [Laura] felt it was all wrong." Even though Laura did not agree with what her mother was saying about the party going on, she had to give in because nobody was being reasonable or listening to her. This is a great example of her use in epiphany, which also somewhat shows up in The Garden Party. Katherine Mansfield 's The Garden Party Katherine Mansfield's "The Garden Party" tells the tale of a young, affluent Laura Sheridan and her encounters with the working class when a man dies on the day of her family's social gathering. Although Laura's sense of self has long been molded by her upper middle class Victorian society, Laura develops compassion, empathy, and awareness that distinguish her from her family. During her interactions with the workmen and the dead Mr. Scott, Laura proves through her reactions, diction, and actions that she will unroot herself from her family's vain lifestyle. Laura's exchange with the workers as they set up for the garden party is the first indication that she will stray from the road of ignorance displayed by her family. While some might argue that Laura's interaction with the workmen is too brief to have a lasting impact on her, it is Laura's response to the workers and her self–awareness–NOT the brevity of the communication– that distinguish her from her family. After running out to meet the men, she at first mimics the stilted tone of her mother's "good morning". Yet without waiting for a reaction from the men, she is instantly aware of how "fearfully affected" she sounds and becomes "ashamed" (Mansfield, 618). While any grown individual might have had to wait for a look of disgust or annoyance, Laura is aware of how pretentious her voice sounds when she speaks like her mother. • 41. Epiphary In Katherine Mansfield's The Garden Party There are many reasons behind an author's story. Mainly it is to portray a message, give a good laugh, or explain a purpose, but the author will get their point across to their readers. In Katherine Mansfield's, "The Garden Party," she focuses on a young, upperclass girl, with the name of Laura Sheridan. During the story, the Sheridan family is preparing to host a very lively garden party. Unfortunately for the circumstance, there has been a death in their community. The Scott family, who is of the middle class, had just lost their husband and their father. The wake for Mr. Scott just so happens to be during the time of the garden party. The separation of classes causes an unsettling act of sympathy from Laura. She can not decide whether to be on the right side or the wrong side of the situation. The death of Mr. Scott allows Laura Sheridan to experience an epiphany, as she encounters the difference's between the upper and middle classes, life and death, and a new perspective of life. Many people are often judged by their appearances, living arrangements, or income status. That is how the world views and classifies people to place them in a hierarchical stature. In the two short stories: Sonny's Blues and The Garden Party, two contrasting characters had been impacted by another character in each story. Sonny's Blues by James Baldwin and The Garden Party by Katherine Mansfield are very different but they have many similarities. The Garden Party is about the Sheridan family who come from an upper class family in 20th century New Zealand, who are holding a garden party. The characters both come from very different walks of life, and both come from very different cultures, yet they are both similar in other ways. Sonny's Blues by James Baldwin and The Garden Party by Katherine Mansfield are very different but they both have secondary characters that exert influence in their stories. First of all, in the story Sonny's Blues, Sonny exerted influence into the life of his brother (who is the unnamed narrator) in the story. I seemed to hear with what burning he had made his with what burning we had yet to make it ours, how we could cease lamenting." (Baldwin 49). Sonny reaches accomplishment by becoming musician like he had always wanted. However, in the story if the Narrator's dream after the army was to become a high school teacher or not since we do not know much about his character. • 53. The And The Garden Party Essay A social totality is not a concept born of mere delicate measure but of a grand scheme of aspects – of mixed languages and customs in a society or the social and economic class and the way those two intertwine. One of the best ways of defining a concept is to understand what it is not, or in a story, the characters that do not define it. Stories such as Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert and "The Garden Party" by Katherine Mansfield both define the borders of the social totalities of their worlds by writing clear characters – Emma Bovary and Laura – that do not belong within that social realm. When stuck in their respective worlds that they grow up in, Emma and Laura believe they understand life because they know their places in the familiarity of what they have always known, but when they become exposed to that breach of their individual worlds, their knowledge is expanded to that of a social totality beyond what they knew. They no longer understand how to fit into their worlds because they do not relate to any of it, leaving them with a sense of discomfort and loneliness, longing for something more. The idea of writing a social totality comes from a process of building a society believable enough that the reader can immerse themselves into the story without strain, all the while incorporating solid facts of that society to make it seem realistic. As described by Georg Lukacs , "The goal for all great art is to provide a picture of reality in which the contradiction ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 55. Essay on Katherine Mansfield's Garden Party Set in colonial New Zealand, "The Garden Party" falls into two clearly different parts. Laura's moms can only think if the worker died in the garden or not. Her mother being stuck in her own world doesn't dwell on that idea too much and still wants to go on with this party. The way Laura's mother talks about the workers is really condescending like when her mother says ''you won't bring a drunken workman back to life by being sentimental.'' You can tell that laura is teeter tottering on which way she should lean towards. She doesn't think that its okay to go through with the party and she is also stuck in her clouded rich world. When she is down there she sees all of the half dressed children and she feels as if she is in an entirely different world. • 57. Class Revisions In The Garden Party By Katherine Mansfield Lucia, Alyssa Mrs. Ritter IB English 11 September 18, 2017 "The Garden Party" Revisions The first thing a reader notices when reading "Garden Party" by Katherine Mansfield is the title. A garden party is a social event, which usually implies friends are invited, there is eating, and exchanging of social niceties, gossip, and other conversation; this can be called communion. In How to Read Literature Like a Professor Mr. Foster states "whenever people eat and/or drink together it's communion" and "not all communions are holy". An act of communion brings people together and provides a place for fellowship. A garden party is also a symbol of wealth, which is also, supported the main character, Laura. She can be quoted in the following situations; "Laura's upbringing made her wonder for a moment whether it was quite respectful of a workman to talk to her of bangs slap in the eye" and "It's all the fault...of these absurd class distinctions". Both of these statements give proof that in the period this story was set, the wealthy were separated from the poverty–stricken through social class. As a result of the class distinctions, she was frequently barred from interacting with what was thought to be the 'lower' class. The question Laura asks herself and others is whether it is acceptable to have a garden party when a man died and left his family in such poor circumstances. She is seemingly very distraught when she hears the news, frantically wondering how she can cancel the party in such short time, this demonstrates compassion, she is still young enough that she hasn't fully adhered to the attitude of the wealthy. When Laura confronts Jose with her questions, Jose thinks Laura is being too dramatic and says that no one expects them to cancel the party. Her mother behaves, in the same manner, saying, "You are being very absurd Laura, people like that don't expect sacrifices from us." Notice she says 'people like that' as if their lack of money and social standing is something to be frowned upon, that because they are not in the same social class they are not worth thinking about or are not deserving of respect or sympathy. Mansfield is using this short story to call attention to the barring between social classes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We dreamed of warmer weather plants such as camellias, sweet box, gold dust plant and crape myrtle in our coastal gardens. A few brave gardeners have planted these southern beauties in protected corners and gone to great lengths to protect their prized garden gems from winter's cold fingers. Now with warmer temperatures and winters moderating these garden beauties can be included in our plant palette. Another staple of southern gardens is Crapemyrtle (Lagerstroemia indica). There are many Crape myrtles hybrid that are mostly hardy to USDA Zone 7, but can be killed to the ground in severe winters. There are a few varieties that are root hardy to Zone 6 and can be treated as perennials. Lagerstroemia fauriei is known to be reliably hardy to USDA Zone 6, but avoid planting them on a south–facing wall where the winter sun might break their dormancy too early. Zone 6 hardy or root hardy Crapemyrtles include: Lagerstroemia indica 'Burgundy Cotton', L. indica 'Red Rocket', L. indica 'Tightwad', L. indica 'Becky's Watermelon Red', L. 'Sarahs Favorite' and L. fauriei cultivars – 'Bashams Party Pink', 'Biloxi', 'Choctaw', 'Hopi'. The Fleming Filigrees cultivars are hardy to USDA Zone 4. Local microclimates can affect plant health and survivability in your area so be aware if your area tends to be colder or warmer than the norm indicated on the USDA Zone Map. Often properties near to lakes or ponds will have a more moderate air temperature and possibly a zone warmer, whereas if you are in a valley the cold air tends to settle so you may be a bit colder. Urban areas, because of the heat island effect of the mass of asphalt and buildings tend to make them a zone warmer than surrounding non–urban areas. Some areas with more consistent snow cover can consider planting species that are from a zone warmer, since the root zone is insulated during the winter months. How will this ... • 61. Analysis Of Hillbilly Elegy And The Garden Party A child's family plays a big role in his or her life. Their family may affect the child's future, but doesn't always have to. Some children choose to break free from their familial molds to become a better person, and some children do so without realizing it. In the short story "The Garden Party", and the memoir Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, family plays an important role in the protagonists' lives. "The Garden Party", written by Katherine Mansfield, is about an upper class family throwing a party despite the news of the death of a neighbor. Laura, the protagonist, feels the need to stop the party as to not be disrespectful, but her family insists on throwing it. Hillbilly Elegy, written by J.D. Vance, is about the struggles of the author as he grows up in a lower class hillbilly family, and his journey to break free of the restraints his heritage has put on him. Both Laura and J.D. have found fault within their families and wish to be different from them, whether doing so consciously or not. Laura, the main character in "The Garden Party", finds that she disagrees with some of her family values, when the news gets out about the death of one of their neighbors. The day that the story takes place, Laura's family is throwing a huge garden party to which many guests will attend. Just before the party will begin, Laura learns that man has died just outside the property. As soon as she hears the news, Laura wants to stop the party completely, but her family doesn't understand. "'Jose!' she said, horrified, 'however are we going to stop everything?'/ 'Stop everything, Laura!' cried Jose in astonishment. 'What do you mean?'/ 'Stop the garden–party, of course'" (6–7). Laura is appalled that a man has just died so close to where she lives, and her family doesn't seem to be phased. When Laura goes to her other family members, they brush her off, just as Jose did. The fact that Laura seems odd to her family about how concerned she is with the dead man, shows something about their values. The Sheridans are very materialistic people and seem not to care about those lower in class than they are. To try and distract her daughter from the news, Mrs. Sheridan gives Laura a hat to wear to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Similar Themes in A Rose for Emily, The Garden Party, and... Short stories often have various underlying themes and meanings to them and can often be compared to other stories to find those same meanings. Occasionally, you need to dig deeper to find these hidden meanings. The three short stories, A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, The Garden Party by Katherine Mansfield, and Everyday Use by Alice Walker all share some similar themes and ideas that require some digging to uncover and bring to the surface. The main analysis this essay with cover is comparing how the three stories discuss and express class and heritage, as well as how death can cause people to not only think things in a different way but also how death can open your eyes to something you never would have seen otherwise. Another thing that is potentially easily missed is how each of the individuals writing styles and backgrounds affect the ground work of the stories and how they progress. The first of the three stories is called A Rose for Emily (Faulkner, 1993). It is a story focused around Emily Grierson and the author divides the story into 5 parts or sections. The story has a narrator that goes nameless for the entirety of the story. In section one of A Rose for Emily (Faulkner, 1993) the narrator is recalling the death of Emily Grierson and how the collective group of towns folk attend the funeral, which is located in her home. It also talks about how after the death of Emily's father that the mayor of the town at the time suspended Emily's tax responsibilities ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"The garden party" and "Bliss" are Mansfield's richest creations and most successful short stories."Bliss" with its specifically sense of intensity and power could be the cause of her success. • 69. Comparing Miss Brill And The Garden Party By Katherine... In language, the term 'conversation' is commonly understood as a discussion engaged between two or more people. This form of verbal communication enables news and new ideas to be exchanged and shared. However, within literature, a conversation is far more nuanced by a result of written work having a greater context which lies beneath the words. The construction of a conversation within the literary text is forever a creation made by the author themselves. The act of creating this conversation by the author is both revealing for an in–depth reading of the text but most significantly to provide a contextual understanding of the author and their choices. In the stories inception, the narration establishes Miss Brill's delusional fantasy, through the weather much like The Garden Party which begins on a perfect day. In Miss Brill, the blue sky which is 'powdered with gold and great spots of light' shines down. The language evokes a description worthy of a painting rather than a true autumn sky. This is a purposeful technique by Mansfield as the sky is a symbolic mirroring of Miss Brill's attempts to cloud her harsh reality with delusions of grandeur and beauty. • 75. Analysis Of Katherine Mansfield 's ' The Garden Party ' Both L.P Hartley and Katherine Mansfield present the poor as suffering as a result of the happiness of the rich. Within both texts, 'The Go–Between' and 'The Garden Party', the poor are shown to suffer but they are presented in two different ways. L.P Hartley presents one of the main characters, who is a rich, middle class woman manipulating a poor boy who visits from boarding school through making him a messenger between her and her working class lover. Whereas, Mansfield presents the rich to ignore the poor suffering rather than as direct victims of the happiness of the rich. In 'The Garden Party', Katherine Mansfield presents the rich to show unawareness of the poor within their neighbourhood in order to contain their happiness. Laura is the only one concerned at this point by the death of Mr. Scott, a local working class man. However, her sister, Jose is not touched by this tragedy. The quote "Stop the garden–party?
