The Use of Balanced Scorecards at WalMart
For Setting and Measuring Performance Objectives
Introduction
As the leading discount retailer in the United States, WalMart (NYSE:WMT) has consistently
shown an exceptional ability to master the complexities of logistics, supply chain management,
retailing and pricing management. The WalMart supply chain is among the most advanced and
sophisticated in its use of analytics and information systems globally, often computing pricing
variation and analysis literally overnight based on satellite uploads of information (WalMart
Investor Relations, 2013). WalMart has also successfully taken a capital–intensive business model
and transformed it into a retailing business capable of generating high profitability from low margin
products based one efficiency alone (Zhu, Singh, Manuszak, 2009). WalMart is also one of the
most–researched companies in the world, and continues to provide in–depth financial data on their
Investor Relations site (WalMart Investor Relations, 2013). The purpose of this analysis is to
evaluate the mission, vision, and overall strategy of WalMart and also define three objectives for
improving the organization's financial position, showing how the objectives defined relate to the
mission, vision and strategy of the company. In addition for each objective, meaningful performance

Effective Followers
Effective Followers Effective followers are a key component to the success of an organization.
Some characteristics that make up an effective follower are ambition, enthusiasm, intelligence,
selflessness, and self–reliance. These five characteristics are all desirable traits that form an
immaculate effective follower. A faultless company is the result of effective followers being hired on
to a company. A strong leader is also required as they would help the efficiency and success of a
company. Although, it is the effective followers that are the key components to the success and
progress of a business. Effective followers push forward the development of a corporation and are
the backbone to any successful business. The first characteristic that makes up an effective follower
is ambition. An ambitious individual is determined to work hard in order to achieve success. Many
people have intellect but they lack ambition. Intellect without ambition is like a fire without a flame.
Have you ever tried to drive a vehicle without an engine? Ambition is the engine to a vehicle like an
effective employee is the engine to a company. Without the engine there is no drive to get work
complete. For instance, a company could hire an individual that is extremely intelligent but if that
employee lacks ambition, the employee's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

frustration. Later the employee discovers that the manager had recently lost his son in a car

Goodwill Impairment Report
Amortization Versus Impairment of Goodwill: Impact on Accounting Quality, Financial Statements'
Economic Value, Investors, and Auditors Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) replaced all
U.S. financial accounting standards in July 2009. Consequently, ASC 350, Intangibles – Goodwill
and Other, replaced SFAS 142, Goodwill and Other Intangible Assets in September 2011. Under
ASC 350, goodwill must be periodically tested for impairment. Goodwill impairment is determined
through the standard detailing a two–step process. However, in January 2014, ASC 350 was updated
by authorizing an alternative method of accounting for goodwill servicing private companies that
could consequently reduce their costs and simplify their accounting methods. Additionally, ... Show

The research specifically examined firms' when SFAS 142 (today ASC 350) required companies to
conduct goodwill impairment testing. Goodwill impairment testing detailed under the U.S. FASB
and international IASB revealed that goodwill impairment testing under both bodies can illustrate
firms' economic conductions and that managers are precise in working to decrease costs associated
with contracting (Godfrey and Koh 117). The authors further explain that their findings are in
support of those who believe that the phenomenon of goodwill impairment testing required through
the introduction of SFAS 142 (now ASC 350) are "a means of providing information relevant to
users of financial statements. These findings are supplemented by evidence that the amount of
goodwill written off is associated with firm size and leverage" (Godfrey and Koh 138).
Consequently, this could be linked to the study concluding that investors view recognition of
goodwill impairment as a indicator of decreased financial health for a firm and consequently, greater
risk as an investment. Therefore, these companies underperformed when they publicly announced
their respective recognition of goodwill impairment. This study illustrates how the goodwill testing
system under the FASB and IASB provides useful information to investors promoting intelligent
investing decisions based on the economic

Growth and Value – Two Sides of the Same Coin?
– "The central principle of investment is to go contrary to the general opinion on the grounds that if
everyone agreed about its merit, the investment is inevitably too dear, and therefore unattractive." –
John Maynard Keynes
Many money managers feel they must distinguish themselves as either "growth" or "value"
investors. While an apparently benign distinction, this simple act can have unintended
consequences. This article will address conventional definitions of growth and value and then look
to the market oracles for a dose of worldly wisdom.
Value investing: The strategy of selecting stocks that trade for less than their intrinsic values. Value

So, when is it appropriate to distinguish between growth and value?
Another very famous investor, Peter Lynch, pioneered a hybrid of growth and value investing with
what is now commonly referred to as a "growth at a reasonable price (GARP)" strategy. Here we see
that the two approaches can be synthesized in the way Buffett describes.
Successful growth investing, which more often than not will bring with it longer holding periods,
requires two distinct elements:
1) The business must have a legitimate long–term competitive advantage.
2) The business most possess the ability to grow earnings on a long–term basis.
Conversely, to be successful in the long term, it is incumbent upon the value investor to sell average
companies (Like company B) when the market price approaches or exceeds fair value.
All investors need to pay attention to the price they pay for equities. Companies that hold large
competitive advantages and exhibit steady growth can be poor growth propositions if they are
"priced to perfection" just as 'value propositions' must incorporate a significant disparity between
price and discerned value. All investments: growth, value or other, should be bought with a Margin
of Safety.
Conclusion:
The stock market may be likened to the field of horse racing. Most punters are focused on picking
the best horse in the race. The error here is in assuming that the best horse comes with the best odds.

The Skimming Of A Business Plan
The Skimming Three
The Skimming Three
The Skimming Three
The Skimming Three simply requires flipping through the pages of the plan and looking at a few
sections. These three of the Top Ten Fatal Flaws also land plans in the "reject" pile.
5. Poorly Written Plan
5. Poorly Written Plan
This ranks up there with sloppy. When you submit a plan, it does not need to be textbook perfect
English. Investors understand that business plans are not written by English professors. The sort of
misspellings that should be caught in a spell check are unforgivable. It shows a tremendous lack of
effort if a business plan isn't even spell checked.
Is the plan clearly written? When an investor reads a plan, is it clear enough to make sense quickly?
Investors don't want to de–code a business plan. They just want to read it. Poor grammar, poor word
choice, wrong words, and too many proofreading errors make a business plan too much of a chore to
get through. It gets the plan tossed into the "reject" pile quickly.
6. Too Much Detail
6. Too Much Detail
This is a common sin of technology, medical and some product start–ups. If you have too much
technical information or too much supporting material in the body of your plan, it bogs down the
reader. Talk about what the Technology DOES for the user first, before going into details. Then go
deeper into the technology or product only enough to let someone know what you're doing, what
problem you're solving, and that your people can deliver. Leave

What Can you Expect to Gain?
Is it a purely financial venture or do you envisage yourself as being in charge of your own little
kingdom? Doing something useful and productive in the community can often provide a motive but
the figures need to stack up and you must never let sentimentality or idealism lead you into financial
meltdown. There's no more worthy a cause to fulfil than to keep the roof over your head – and
remember this can be at stake if you get it wrong.
As well as gaining a sense of purpose in life and hopefully providing your family with long–term
financial security (emphasis on the phrase 'long–term' because being a property investor is no easy
way to a fast buck) you'll be your own boss and avoid the daily grind of the usual nine–to–five
routine.

doctoral students building the most amazing internet success of our time? Only this story entails
transforming a mathematical term into a popular verb used in daily conversations for research and
web surfing by students and business professionals. All of this and much more has been compiled in
a chronology of events associated with the early beginnings in The Google Story. The story tends to
follow a similar tone and theme to the movie Pirates of Silicon Valley, but with less drama and
industrial espionage. The founders are portrayed as the "rock stars" of the technology world. The
book details the early lives of Sergey Brin and Larry Page, beginning when they met as computer
science doctoral students at Stanford University. Ironically, the derivation of the company's name,
(googol, one followed by 100 zeroes) equates to the depth of the journey to build the technology
phenomenon called Google. Throughout the book, it is clear that the indelible influence of their
families provided the strong foundation of work ethic, character, and respect for education. Sergey

Free Third-Level Education In The United States
In the US we are offered education as a right, but with a cost to it. Countries like Norway, Finland,
and Sweden cover the education of their citizens every step of the way. I am an enormous advocate

reasons: everyone can benefit, a workable policy has been proposed, and our country could benefit.
Sen. Bernie Sanders pulled the attention of many young voters with their plans of getting rid of
college tuition. The advantages of free third–level education are endless.

Secondly, Hong Kong offered an open and friendly investment policy. It played a role of market
regulator with less government intervention rather than market participant with more intervention.
For example, Hong Kong did not impose regulation on working hours and terms of contracts, and it
only regulated the statutory minimum wages per hours for labours (Hong Kong business forecast
report 2015).Thus, the labour costs in Hong Kong are flexible and company has more rights on
contract when hire employees. Moreover, government allowed foreign investors to legally acquire
the ownership of property in most industrial sectors except for broadcasting industry (Country
profile 2015) and to freely select investment area without restriction. Furthermore, government
optimized the procedures of business registration, and it helped investors save time from application
process. Besides, there is no different treatment between local investors and foreign investors.
Government set the same business regulation to the same industry. Thus, foreign investors have
equal chance to compete with local investors.
In addition, Hong Kong had 'simple and low tax regime'. Company only need to pay the tax amount
based on their revenue earned in Hong Kong, and they did not need to pay 'sales tax, capital gain tax
and withholding tax on dividends' (InvestHK 2016). These tax exemptions would obviously reduce

"Wall Street is the only place that people ride to in a Rolls Royce to get advice from those who take

Stock market is the arena where people indulge in buying and selling stocks trading on the
exchange, thus creating the dynamics of stock price through demand and supply of the stocks.
9:15 the bell rings and there are money flooding into and out of the market. This is what generally
people do who are new to the market. They make money, lose more than they gain and still have
anxiety to trade in the market just in the thought that they would be Warren Buffett trading the
stocks and that is where most of them go wrong. All of the human unhappiness comes from one
single thing, not knowing how to remain rest in the room. And to bring back their lost money, they

Yes, this is the dynamics of the stock market where people want to become rich overnight. They

In the stock market, the best stock investment strategies are usually the ones that have been proven
reliable over a period of time and the longer the better. Sadly, in the investment industry, there are
numerous vendors that recommend investment strategies based on everything from planetary

difficult not to mention frustrating for many investors. Combine that with countless TV shows,

Change management is designed to ensure the effective transition of an organization and its people
from the current to future states, and is about effectively leading and managing individuals, teams
and organization to successfully adopt the changes needed to achieve required or desired business
results. Kotter's eight–step can be used to transform SEC successfully. 1, establishing a sense of
urgency As initiators of the strategy, there is a need to establish a sense of urgency.
Visible crises can be enormously helpful in catching people's attention and pushing up urgency
levels. Admissions of significant failures at the SEC extend back over many years and cover
multiple areas of SEC operations, the credibility of the SEC as a financial regulator has never been
lower. The SEC failed to discover a $50 billion Ponzi scheme at Madoff Investment Securities,
despite having received allegations of wrongdoing for over a decade, suggests fundamental
weaknesses in its core enforcement
2, forming a powerful guiding coalition It is critical to create a guiding coalition to build urgency
and momentum for the change, it is crucial to identify key people from different areas of the
organization who would be willing and able to manage the change. It is important to get this group
operating as a team early in the process.

Amortization And Impairment Of Goodwill
Amortization Versus Impairment of Goodwill:
Impact on Accounting Quality, Financial Statements' Economic Value, Investors, and Auditors
Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) replaced all U.S. financial accounting standards in July
2009. Consequently, ASC 350, Intangibles – Goodwill and Other, replaced SFAS 142, Goodwill and
Other Intangible Assets in September 2011. Under ASC 350, goodwill must be periodically tested
for impairment. Goodwill impairment is determined through a two–step process outlined in ASC
350. However, in January 2014, an update to ASC 350 was released, which authorized an alternative
method of accounting for goodwill servicing private companies that could consequently reduce their
costs and simplify their accounting methods. Additionally, the international standard for goodwill
impairment, IFRS 3, specifically mandates that companies must annually test goodwill for
impairment. The specifics of the impairment test are entailed in IAS 36 Impairment of Assets, the
international standard for accounting for goodwill associated with business combinations. This
paper will analyze the effects of the accounting policies enacted under these standards and in
particular analyze the efficiency of impairment testing methods versus amortization of goodwill and
the connection of impairment methods with managerial and CEO compensation and earnings

When it comes to investing, millennials adhere to a different approach than their parents. Young
investors, who have been through two market crashes, have developed skepticism and mistrust
towards banks and traditional advisory services. Many millennials prefer to save and forgo investing
all together. For those willing to test the market, technology and social trends play a significant
impact on their decision making. With millennials now outnumbering baby boomers in the U.S.,
many traditional financial services strive to connect with the younger generation. This comes on the

the use of technology, robo–advisors have built a successful foundation for attracting young
investors.
Technology
Given their love of technology, it comes as no surprise that millennials are gravitating towards
financial technology. Young investors are accustomed to using technology for every aspect of their
lives and investing is no different. Their relationship with technology makes digital asset
management more appealing. Young adults are more inclined to make choices via a smartphone over
in person interactions. Not only do millennials prefer accessible apps and web based platforms, but
automation has played a major factor in the success of robo–advisors. Millennials are accustomed to

Nato Entry Into The European Union
Croatia is one of the most likely candidates for entry into the European Union within the next few
years and as a result it is also one of the more exciting of Europe 's emerging economies in terms of
potential property price growth because with pre–EU entry comes serious foreign direct investment
and political and economic stability, and post–EU entry comes greater worldwide confidence in a
country and a nation 's ability to trade more directly and favourably with the rest of the European
Union.
When you add to this positive news the fact that Croatia has 5,835 kilometres of coastline (1,777 km

Another advantage that the ease of availability of mortgages has is that it means the local population
has more access to property based finance and the local market in Croatia also demands property
stock...this is good news for an investor. Why? Because tourism potential is good, but having a local
market willing and able to take real estate stock off an investor 's hands in the future is even better
news. Targeting this increasingly affluent nation an investor has a chance of generating sustainable
and consistent returns from a commitment to Croatia for the medium term at least.
Another reason why property in Croatia will be big business in 2007 and beyond is because of an
increase in the number of international businesses choosing locations such as Dubrovnik and Zagreb
in Croatia as centres for near–shoring back office operations for example. Croatians are hard
working, intelligent people who will currently work for lower rates of pay that their counterparts in
the EU–15 for example and some companies are establishing operations in Croatia to tap into this
labour force and are demanding commercial premises as well as pushing up local demand for
residential stock.
Levels of foreign direct investment as well as the number of international companies setting up
regional hubs in Croatia also represents a positive factor for investors to bear in mind. FDI and more

Mentioned below are three important factors most people face with marketing techniques: Cultural,
Political, and Business Ethics. Cultural: In the U.S. there are many cultural variations. One of the
things I've found to be a factor with marketing, is the basic cultural and language variations between
people from different countries. The complex details of a variable annuity are difficult to explain in
any language, so when the client may not speak and understand the broker's language well enough,
there may be a high level of insecurity over the whole purchase process. Also, imagery used in
marketing materials may not have the same impact on people from different cultures, and may even
be offensive or unrealistic. These same anxiety inducing factors may also prevent the investor from
asking questions they feel are relevant, but don't want to be perceived as uneducated or
unsophisticated. Consumer behavior differs in each culture, in which one might use everything from
body gestures, long periods of silence, and empathy to exchange communications. People might
have a hard time with reading investment materials, writing and speaking a less than familiar
language, but might have very clear listening abilities that could increase their comfort with and
comprehension of the product. Political – We've all seen the stock markets rise and fall with the

Reducing Capital : The Problem Of Capital And Crowd...
There are a countless number of ways for startups to try and raise capital for their new ventures, but
not all of them are the right fit for each startup. Most entrepreneurs have the initial reaction that they
need to go out and find capital as quickly as possible. Inexperienced entrepreneurs do not realize the
repercussions that can happen by selecting the wrong funding outlet. Crowd funding is becoming
increasingly popular because of the ability to microfinance investments. This industry shift makes

business. Getting the financial resources for your business is extremely important for its long term

clearly understand what to do with the investment. Venture capital and angel investments are often
not properly allocated even with guidance. Crowd funding makes this problem even worse.
One is you, two is company, and three... well... three(+) is a crowd. When it comes to relationships,
the middle option is perhaps best as it decreases complexity and the number of moving parts.
Alternatively, when it comes to sourcing cash to support your idea, product, or dream, you

Already in poor financial shape from a downturn in the economy, Bank of America compounded its
problems by acquiring Countrywide Financial, the largest mortgage originator in America (at the

proved to be a very huge mistake for the bank. Countrywide lacked integrity when it came to
underwriting and selling mortgages and had very unethical loan origination processes. Its property
appraisers inflated home values, its loan officers helped applicants falsify income and assets on their
mortgage applications, and its capital markets teams misrepresented the quality of the resulting

there are also times where those genius ideas are shelved because no one has an interest in that

According to the third theory, Tax Preference Theory, capital gains are preferred over dividends.
Due to time value of money, a dollar paid in the future on taxes has a lower cost than a dollar paid
on taxes in the present. Capital gains typically have better tax advantages than dividends which is
why some investors prefer to invest in companies that minimize dividends.
Based on the scatter plot, I would have to say that Haveloche has chosen a variety of these different
theories over the years since they have been paying dividends. When the company needed to
reinvest the money back into the company, they dividend was lowered. When the company had
plenty of extra cash lying around, the dividend payout increased. Haveloche has been paying a
dividend since its initial IPO, but those dividends vary from year to year. One could argue that the
dividend is guaranteed each year based on past history, but the investor does not have a clue as to
how what that dividend will be based off of.
And if you take a look at the stock price from year to year, it widely fluctuates up and down.
Investors in this do not know from year to year if the company's patents are going to strike it rich or
if they are just going to be shelved. It being an R&D company, it is a risky company, which
investors know prior to taking the plunge with investing their hard earned money.

The Pros And Cons Of Robots
My entire life, from what I can remember, has always been accompanied by technology or robots.
From a young age I played the newest video game consoles: Playstation 1, Playstation 2, Nintendo

To justify this claim, during the past twelve months, Yum received a revenue figure, according to
Reuters, of $9.56 billion. This number was a 5.05% increase compared to the previous year number.
While this increase in margin was a bit below the average year–to–year increase of 6.58%, the
difference in growth decline was only a 23% difference. Other companies like Brinker saw a 43%
deceleration during this same time period. In addition, while some investors may critique the
industry 11.31% growth in sales during the past to Yum's lower numbers, it is also important to
realize that Yum supports the seconds highest sales figure in its industry, and appreciation of revenue
growth will be much difficult than smaller–capitalization companies to come–by. This is in addition
to the fact that many lower–revenue companies in this industry are actually seeing negative sales
growth (not deceleration) during the same time frame as the aforementioned analysis. With these
thoughts on sales at hand, these numbers can be used at the broadest of levels to illustrate that the
steady increase and influx of money into Yum over its career has aided in the appreciation of its

there are large numbers of rational, profit–maximizers actively competing, with each trying to

1934 Dbq
The effects of the economic market crash of 1929 appeared in how the public sustained severe
losses at the hands of securities traders and corporations. With the unmistakable need to restore
financial specialist trust in the securities market President Roosevelt pushed for a huge securities
regulation and the creation of the Securities Act of 1933 sprouted along with the approval of
Congress. Then in a year later in 1934 Congress observed the need to make modifications to the
1933 Act by establishing an independent governmental regulatory body the Securities and Exchange
Commission (SEC). The SEC main responsibility came to be to ensure and protect the public
against malpractices in the securities and financial markets. As the years passed businesses and
technology advances developed and the economic market expanded. With the economy market

The Securities Exchange Act of 1934 is primarily concerned is requiring companies to disclosure
their material information to investors. Different from the 1933 Act, which consisted mainly on a

the 1933 Act it requires only for the term of an issuance of

Some characteristics that make up an effective follower are ambition, enthusiasm, intelligence, selflessness, and self–reliance. These five characteristics are all desirable traits that form an immaculate effective follower. A faultless company is the result of effective followers being hired on to a company. A strong leader is also required as they would help the efficiency and success of a company. Although, it is the effective followers that are the key components to the success and progress of a business. Effective followers push forward the development of a corporation and are the backbone to any successful business. The first characteristic that makes up an effective follower is ambition. An ambitious individual is determined to work hard in order to achieve success. Many people have intellect but they lack ambition. Intellect without ambition is like a fire without a flame. Have you ever tried to drive a vehicle without an engine? Ambition is the engine to a vehicle like an effective employee is the engine to a company. Goodwill Impairment Report Amortization Versus Impairment of Goodwill: Impact on Accounting Quality, Financial Statements' Economic Value, Investors, and Auditors Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) replaced all U.S. financial accounting standards in July 2009. Consequently, ASC 350, Intangibles – Goodwill and Other, replaced SFAS 142, Goodwill and Other Intangible Assets in September 2011. Under ASC 350, goodwill must be periodically tested for impairment. Goodwill impairment is determined through the standard detailing a two–step process. However, in January 2014, ASC 350 was updated by authorizing an alternative method of accounting for goodwill servicing private companies that could consequently reduce their costs and simplify their accounting methods. Additionally, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The research specifically examined firms' when SFAS 142 (today ASC 350) required companies to conduct goodwill impairment testing. Goodwill impairment testing detailed under the U.S. FASB and international IASB revealed that goodwill impairment testing under both bodies can illustrate firms' economic conductions and that managers are precise in working to decrease costs associated with contracting (Godfrey and Koh 117). The authors further explain that their findings are in support of those who believe that the phenomenon of goodwill impairment testing required through the introduction of SFAS 142 (now ASC 350) are "a means of providing information relevant to users of financial statements. These findings are supplemented by evidence that the amount of goodwill written off is associated with firm size and leverage" (Godfrey and Koh 138). Consequently, this could be linked to the study concluding that investors view recognition of goodwill impairment as a indicator of decreased financial health for a firm and consequently, greater risk as an investment. Therefore, these companies underperformed when they publicly announced their respective recognition of goodwill impairment. This study illustrates how the goodwill testing system under the FASB and IASB provides useful information to investors promoting intelligent investing decisions based on the economic ... While an apparently benign distinction, this simple act can have unintended consequences. Another very famous investor, Peter Lynch, pioneered a hybrid of growth and value investing with what is now commonly referred to as a "growth at a reasonable price (GARP)" strategy. Here we see that the two approaches can be synthesized in the way Buffett describes. Successful growth investing, which more often than not will bring with it longer holding periods, requires two distinct elements: 1) The business must have a legitimate long–term competitive advantage. 2) The business most possess the ability to grow earnings on a long–term basis. Conversely, to be successful in the long term, it is incumbent upon the value investor to sell average companies (Like company B) when the market price approaches or exceeds fair value. All investors need to pay attention to the price they pay for equities. Companies that hold large competitive advantages and exhibit steady growth can be poor growth propositions if they are "priced to perfection" just as 'value propositions' must incorporate a significant disparity between price and discerned value. All investments: growth, value or other, should be bought with a Margin of Safety. Conclusion:

The Skimming Of A Business Plan The Skimming Three The Skimming Three The Skimming Three The Skimming Three simply requires flipping through the pages of the plan and looking at a few sections. These three of the Top Ten Fatal Flaws also land plans in the "reject" pile. 5. Poorly Written Plan 5. Poorly Written Plan This ranks up there with sloppy. When you submit a plan, it does not need to be textbook perfect English. Investors understand that business plans are not written by English professors. The sort of misspellings that should be caught in a spell check are unforgivable. It shows a tremendous lack of effort if a business plan isn't even spell checked. Is the plan clearly written? When an investor reads a plan, is it clear enough to make sense quickly? Investors don't want to de–code a business plan. They just want to read it. Poor grammar, poor word choice, wrong words, and too many proofreading errors make a business plan too much of a chore to get through. It gets the plan tossed into the "reject" pile quickly. 6. Too Much Detail 6. Too Much Detail This is a common sin of technology, medical and some product start–ups. If you have too much technical information or too much supporting material in the body of your plan, it bogs down the reader. Young investors, who have been through two market crashes, have developed skepticism and mistrust towards banks and traditional advisory services. Many millennials prefer to save and forgo investing all together. For those willing to test the market, technology and social trends play a significant impact on their decision making. Its property appraisers inflated home values, its loan officers helped applicants falsify income and assets on their mortgage applications, and its capital markets teams misrepresented the quality of the resulting mortgages to institutional investors like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (Maxfield, A Brief History of Bank of America in Crisis, 2015). The result of this one poor business acquisition alone was years of legal issues and losses. The legal woes created by Countrywide alone amounted to $40.3 billion of the $91.2 billion levied against the bank since 2008 (Maxfield, A Brief History of Bank of America in Crisis, ... There are times when genius ideas bring in lots of cash flow for the company. But there are also times where those genius ideas are shelved because no one has an interest in that patent. The ever changing cash flows prove to be difficult for decision making, especially when it comes to whether the company should give back to its investors or not. Haveloche is constantly faced with the predicament of deciding what dividend policy is best for the organization and the investors. According to the third theory, Tax Preference Theory, capital gains are preferred over dividends. Due to time value of money, a dollar paid in the future on taxes has a lower cost than a dollar paid on taxes in the present. Capital gains typically have better tax advantages than dividends which is why some investors prefer to invest in companies that minimize dividends. Based on the scatter plot, I would have to say that Haveloche has chosen a variety of these different theories over the years since they have been paying dividends. When the company needed to reinvest the money back into the company, they dividend was lowered. When the company had plenty of extra cash lying around, the dividend payout increased. Haveloche has been paying a dividend since its initial IPO, but those dividends vary from year to year. One could argue that the dividend is guaranteed each year based on past history, but the investor does not have a clue as to how what that dividend will be based off of. And if you take a look at the stock price from year to year, it widely fluctuates up and down. Investors in this do not know from year to year if the company's patents are going to strike it rich or if they are just going to be shelved. From a young age I played the newest video game consoles: Playstation 1, Playstation 2, Nintendo DS, Gameboy. Along with those game consoles I would play on the computer we kept in my parents bedroom. I got my first flip phone in 5th grade with the IPhone 4 following 6th grade year. My very own laptop came 7th grade year. As you can see, I have had many experiences with a variety of consoles and devices. Technology has just always fascinated me, when I would play games, I would be left with a certain greed to play more and more. Now a days, you have robots like Amazon Alexa or Siri in the IPhones that can talk to you, do commands, and even answer questions. Every year companies make robots with more intelligence, but lets look at robots from a smaller standpoint. I believe everyone has a general idea what a robot looks like; I can guarantee you see a human like figure that's more intelligent than the average joe. To justify this claim, during the past twelve months, Yum received a revenue figure, according to Reuters, of $9.56 billion. This number was a 5.05% increase compared to the previous year number. While this increase in margin was a bit below the average year–to–year increase of 6.58%, the difference in growth decline was only a 23% difference. Other companies like Brinker saw a 43% deceleration during this same time period. In addition, while some investors may critique the industry 11.31% growth in sales during the past to Yum's lower numbers, it is also important to realize that Yum supports the seconds highest sales figure in its industry, and appreciation of revenue growth will be much difficult than smaller–capitalization companies to come–by. This is in addition to the fact that many lower–revenue companies in this industry are actually seeing negative sales growth (not deceleration) during the same time frame as the aforementioned analysis. With these thoughts on sales at hand, these numbers can be used at the broadest of levels to illustrate that the steady increase and influx of money into Yum over its career has aided in the appreciation of its share price. Since 2003, not once has Yum seen a calendar year decrease in price. This comes with a 25% appreciation in 2006 and a 12% escalation so far in 2007––despite the recent economic turmoil. Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) which published in Eugene Fama's 1965 paper "Random Walks In Stock Market Prices". It is based on a "random walk theory" which earliest examined by Maurice Kendall in 1953, he concluded that the movement of security prices on the security market was random.
