Kenya has a very diverse population that includes most major ethnic, racial and
linguistic groups found in Africa. Bantu and Nilotic populations together
constitute around 97% of the nation's inhabitants.[6]
Swahili and English are official languages. Swahili is compulsory in primary
education, and, along with English, serves as the main lingua franca between
the various ethnic groups. SIL Ethnologue lists 68 languages spoken in
Kenya.[7]
Kenya's largest ethnic group, the Kikuyu, make up less than a fifth of the
population.
