Spanish is the official language of Cuba, though some small groups speak other languages. Cuban food blends Mexican influences with rice and beans being staples, and also incorporates African flavors. Cuba's music stems primarily from European and African traditions, with instruments and dances being creolized fusions of Spanish and African styles. In the 1950s, Cuba had a vibrant economy supported by foreign investment with low costs of housing and transportation, and high rates of employment and literacy.
