4. Crossing Requests UpdatesCrossing Requests Updates
• Oakton/Barton: Crossing guard assigned, LED Blinker signs and
temporary crash cushions to be installed by November 30th
.
• Central/Broadway: Will discuss at the 7th
ward meeting on
October 11th
.
• Church/Wesley: Stop for pedestrian state law sign including “in-
street” sign installed.
• Main/Custer: 2 meters removed for better pedestrian visibility.
• Crawford/Thayer: New sidewalk project was submitted for 2013
CIP.
• Oakton/Hartrey: Expand Passenger Loading Zone on the south
side of Oakton by December, 2012, and recommend expanding
parking within James Park by about 30-35 spaces in the future.

5. • Oakton/Florence: Establish Passenger Loading Zone on the south
side of Oakton for drop offs by December 2012; four parking spaces will
be need to be removed to accommodate the change.
• Dodge/Monroe: Crosswalk installed, ramps and signs are complete.
• Main/Pitner: Crosswalk installed; ramp work and signs being
completed.
• Ridge/Colfax: The highest pedestrian activity (eight adults) was
observed between 6:00 to 7:00 PM. Staff have concerns establishing
crossings at low pedestrian crossing locations on major arterial streets
where there are traffic signals within a block or two. Establishing a
crossing would also require the elimination of four parking spaces in a
high demand area to ensure proper visibility of the signs.

6. • Grant/Cartwright Park: Residents working on a Stop sign petition
as part of the Neighborhood Traffic Calming program.
• Oakton: Between Ridge and Custer: Upon review, a general
crossing will be established at Sherman intersection by November 30th
.
• Forest/Davis: Crosswalk/Sidewalk to be installed November 30th
.
• Payne/Hartrey: Upon review, a general crossing will be established
by November 30th
.
• Sheridan/Emerson: NU has no interest in placing a crossing
guard at the location.
• Crain/Oak: Very limited pedestrian activity with plenty of gaps in
traffic flow to cross the street. Parking can be restricted for improved
pedestrian visibility.

7. • Benson: Church to Davis: Options: One-way south, modified
two-way (buses/taxicabs only in southbound direction) or maintain
existing
• Dewey/South Blvd: Low traffic volume street, standard warrants
for stop sign will not be met. Residents can request a petition for stop
signs as part of the Neighborhood Traffic Calming program.

8. Education & EncouragementEducation & Encouragement
Safety marker sticker distributed the first
day of school. Installation on the sidewalk
underway.
City Manager and staff met with School District 65
Superintendent and school staff. School children safety
and education/encouragement programs discussed.
School Board approval needed for parent volunteers
/maintenance staff to act as crossing guards.
Safety flyers prepared and placed on website and
provided to the school district for distribution to parents.
