On October 17, 1989, an earthquake hit San Francisco, California, killing at least fifty people and
injuring several others. This earthquake registered as a 6.9 on the Richter scale, the largest since
1906. Not only did this earthquake devastate numerous families' homes, it also collapsed the
Oakland Bay Bridge. The damage due to the earthquake resulted in a cost of around ten billion

No design is perfect. The Oakland Bay Bridge consisted of two eight–mile long, suspension bridges.
C. H. Purcell first built it in the 1930's. According to Britannica Online, he originally had structural
issues with the sinking to bedrock in the central anchorage. When repairing the bridge after Loma
Prieta, the challenge was making it more seismically sound. The West Span of the bridge held up
due to its suspension design. This led to the West Span being more flexible than the East. Bridges
must have a certain level of flexibility, but not so flexible that extreme conditions would create
another disaster such as the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Collapse of 1940. The West side of the bridge
was mostly in tension when the earthquake hit. Allowing the bridge to absorb forces and create
equal and opposite forces of its own kept the West side of the bridge intact. However, the stiffness of

The main concern was as to whether the failure had been the cause of assembly (welding) or the
materials and design used to repair the eyebar (Wilson, 2009). They concluded that the brace that
had been used for the repair moved more than had been intended in windy conditions due to the

HISTORY Located at the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, a three–mile–long strait
connects the San Francisco Bay to the nearby Pacific Ocean. This strait (named "Golden Gate" by

Soon after the pier (surrounded by a caisson) was placed in the water, a storm caused the nearby
water to churn. This water raised the caisson and continuously beat it into the fender. After
removing the pier, workers reinforced the fender with concrete; thus making the fender a part of the
final foundation. The pier was completed in January 1935; followed five months by the tower. Two
months after completing the towers, it was time to begin constructing the cables. Two main cables
would stretch from one anchorage to the other: passing over both of the towers. Using technology
from the company John A. Roebling's Sons, workers spun over 25,000 pencil–thin wires into 7,650–
foot–long, 36.5–inch–wide cables. With the advanced technology, workers were able to complete
the construction in less than seven months. In September 1936, workers completed the roadway
steel. Eight months later, workers complete and secure the road deck. This was achieved through the
use of 254 sets of suspender ropes, which were spaced fifty feet apart and extended to the main
cables. These ropes help to secure and support the weight of the new road.

Through a partnership with health clinic, La Clinica and Walgreens, we would like to create a
program that is more suited towards an undocumented population needs that may be overlooked.
The ACA was created to help insure a larger portion of the nation's population and give people
access to affordable and higher quality care. Unfortunately, the ACA completely excludes
undocumented immigrants from the eligibility of the program, even though this population consists
of 11 million, which is a huge chunk of the nation's population. As a result, the undocumented
population is left with Emergency Medicaid, which is a program that is a part of ACA. This program
gives some limited assistance to undocumented individuals in a case of an "emergency" or
pregnancy related issues. Emergency Medicaid does not cover any type of prevention care or offer
primary physicians to patients. It is also important to note that if the hospital determines that the
visit was not an emergency, then the patient is left with a high medical bill that they would not be
able to afford possibly leading to bankruptcy.
Private insurance is a difficult otherworld system that many people whom native language is not
English may feel inadequate to pursue due to language barriers or mixed status families and

Earthquakes are a powerful force of nature. When they strike, it reminds us of how vulnerable we
are to this unpredictable event. On Saturday April 25 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal
killing thousands of people and injuring even more. The number of dead will probably increase, as
thousands remain missing. When a tragedy as this one occurs, society unites in grieving the people
who were injured and those who perished. Everyone sees the devastating effects and the strength of
earthquakes and it incites questions throughout the world as people seek understanding of why this
happened? Moreover, they begin to worry of when this will happen again. California is a state
susceptible to massive earthquakes such as the one that hit Nepal. In California, we are aware the
"big one" might hit soon, and the best way to determine when, is to look at the history of our state.
History of Earthquakes in California
Growing up in Southern California, I remember practicing earthquake drills in elementary school.
Teachers instructed us to protect our head and quickly seek cover under our desks during the drills.
They told us that if a quake happened at home, finding a doorframe to stand under would be the

I like to go there because we will rent a house for a week. The house is on the beach and we bring
boogie boards to go on the waves. The water is very cold but after you get in for a while you get

The current Bay Bridge spans across the San Francisco Bay and through Yerba Buena Island. The
reason the bridge travels through an island is because in the 1930's it would have been nearly
impossible to construct an eight mile long bridge spanning such deep water. During most of the 20th
century, this island was a U.S. Navy base and in order for construction to be allowed, the approval
of Congress was necessary. As a result, there was a great deal of lobbying that occurred in order to
allow California the right to build across the island. After gaining the approval of Congress in
February of 1931, construction started in July of 1933.
In the past construction also took less time. One reason for this is that safety regulations were not
nearly as strict then as they are now. It was understood 80 years ago that any major construction
project would come with the loss of life. According to Lisa Vorderbrueggen from Contra Costa
Times, for every $1 million to be spent on a project regarding high steel work, there would be one
death. In total the bridge cost was $77 million (equivalent to about $1.3 billion in current dollars)
and resulted in 24 deaths (Vorderbrueggen).
The construction was difficult to design so many years ago because there was no surface bedrock.
Engineers were also concerned with both high wind speeds and earthquakes. They did not have

Because of the passing of the Volstead Act in 1920, production and distribution of alcohol became
an extremely profitable business. With this also came a noticeable rise in organized crime in many
of the big cities. Even worse, the crimes committed by members of these gangs became more
violent. Soon prisons were overcrowded and were merely hold facilities.
No correction was in mind for these prisoners. Convicts filled the empty hours with talk, mostly
about the crimes they had committed and ways they could beat the law. Drug addicts and other petty
offenders were mixed with killers and robbers. Young felons, who had taken to crime for no more
than sheer pleasure or pride on a dare, came out of prison with no job skills but with plenty of
advice from more experienced criminals. In 1933, J. Edgar Hoover was made the director of the
recently established FBI agency.
Hoover had plans to crack down on these criminals. The problem Hoover faced was that, no sooner
were the criminals locked up than the crime organizations would bust them out. With this major
problem in mind, the Justice Department began looking into a maximum–security prison that was
not easy to access and therefore inescapable. When they came across Alcatraz, it was almost too
