An essential part of ensuring the preservation of old places is ensuring community support. In this installment of the How to Save a Place series, we’re sharing ways you can draw attention and build support for your project. Methods range from public relations to community tours. While these strategies are not a replacement for community participation in the preservation process (which is paramount for any any preservation project) here are a variety of tools, techniques, and tips to help you shine a light on the places you love.

The report notes that transnational organized crime groups are active in some illicit wildlife markets, where they exploit inconsistencies and weaknesses in regulation and enforcement, adapting their methods and routes continuously to evade detection and prosecution. Corruption also plays a key role in undermining regulation and enforcement actions against wildlife trade

Bees and other pollinators are essential for our existence, sustaining agriculture and biodiversity worldwide. With over 20,000 species of bees and various other wild pollinators, they face challenges from human activities, such as habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change.World Bee Day 2024 highlights and celebrates the role of youth in beekeeping and pollinator conservation. This year’s theme emphasizes global cooperation to engage young individuals in protecting these vital species. By doing so, we safeguard food security, preserve agricultural livelihoods, and combat biodiversity loss.Use this guide to get inspired and get involved!

Water is critical for meeting commitments of the Paris Agreement and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Our economies rely on water, with recent estimates putting the economic value of water and freshwater ecosystems at USD 58 trillion - equivalent to 60% of global GDP. At the same time, water related risks are increasing in frequency and scale in the context of climate change. How are investments shaping our economies and societies exposure to water risk? What role can the financial system play in supporting water security? And how can increased understanding of how finance both impacts and depends on water resources spur action towards greater water security? This OECD Green Talks LIVE on Tuesday 14 May 2024 from 15:00 to 16:00 CEST discussed the evolving landscape for assessing water risks to the financial system. OECD Policy Analyst Lylah Davies presented key findings and recommendations from recent OECD work on assessing the financial materiality of water-related risks, including the recently published paper “Watered down? Investigating the financial materiality of water-related risks” and was joined by experts to discuss relevant initiatives underway.

UCPCOG Executive Director Robert Hiett advocated for funding for this study to assess current conditions, and for it to recommend actions and strategies to prepare for future growth and development for the region. IEA publication, May 2024 Critical minerals, which are essential for a range of clean energy technologies, have risen up the policy agenda in recent years due to increasing demand, volatile price movements, supply chain bottlenecks and geopolitical concerns. The dynamic nature of the market necessitates greater transparency and reliable information to facilitate informed decision-making, as underscored by the request from Group of Seven (G7) ministers for the IEA to produce medium- and long-term outlooks for critical minerals. The Global Critical Minerals Outlook 2024 follows the IEA’s inaugural review of the market last year. It provides a snapshot of industry developments in 2023 and early 2024 and offers medium- and long-term outlooks for the demand and supply of key energy transition minerals based on the latest technology and policy trends. The report also assesses key risks to the reliability, sustainability and diversity of critical mineral supply chains and analyses the consequences for policy and industry stakeholders. It will be accompanied by an updated version of the Critical Minerals Data Explorer, an interactive online tool that allows users to explore the latest IEA projections.

Wildlife trafficking impacts a very wide range of species of wild animals, plants and fungi, traded locally for domestic use and to international markets. It encompasses a diverse range of commodities, including those used for food, medicine, construction, adornment, display and keeping as live specimens. It includes trafficking in contravention of laws governing large volume and high value natural resource trade sectors, such as those producing timber and fisheries goods. Although sometimes perceived as somehow distinct from other wildlife trade sectors, most food fisheries still come from wild sources, and most timber comes from natural forests rather than plantations, including from illegal sources (Box 2.1). In practice, most of the analysis in this and previous editions of the World Wildlife Crime Report focuses on the trafficking of species subject to trade regulation under CITES.
