Sexism In Huck Finn
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is an adventurous story following Huck and
Jim's adventures along the Mississippi River and the unfamiliar characters they come across.
Through the strong focus on adventure, Huck Finn's childlike innocence most Americans desire, the
important lessons that can benefit everyone, and the illustration of the United State's history through
racism and sexism, Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn proves to be a good model
for an American classic novel.
A strong focus in the novel is Huck's desire for adventure. Adventure plays such an enormous role in
our modern society, with the huge quantity of action movies, a large focus on fast–paced, exciting
commercials, and an enormous market for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One key lesson indicated is what's easy, isn't always the right thing to do. When Jim gets caught and
brought to the Phelps's house, Huck is faced with the dilemma of helping Jim escape, or to leave
him there and write to his owner, Miss Watson. When Huck writes a letter, he feels "good and all
washed clean of sin for the first time I had ever felt so in my life," (Twain 213). But after thinking
back on all the kind things Jim has done to help him, Huck begins to feel conflicted. Realizing that
sending the letter is only the easy way out, and the right thing to do is to help Jim is an important
step for Huck. Huck's shift in his decision to do what's right, not what's the easiest is a very
important lesson to learn for all readers. Although the book is filled with problematic and racist
statements, it does encourage equality between races, an important lesson at the time of it's
publishing. By creating Jim to be a much stronger father figure to Huck than his own father, it
contradicts negative stereotypes about African Americans. Through writing about Huck overcoming
his moral predicaments associated with helping Jim escape Missouri, Mark Twain encourages the
audience to conquer these problems as well. Because of the moral messages The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn is filled with, it helps to promote ethical behavior in society, an important concept
in a classic novel. Through the obvious racist and

Huck Finn Women's Role
"The widow she cried over me, and called me a poor lost lamb, and she called me a lot of other
names, too, but she never meant no harm by it. She put me in them new clothes again, and I couldn't
do nothing but sweat and sweat, and feel all cramped up. Well, then, the old thing commenced again.
The widow rung a bell for supper, and you had to come to time(Twain 1–2)."
The widow was one of Huck's first somewhat stable parental figure in his life. She feels the need to
take him in and educate him. Her main jobs include clothing him, washing him, feeding him, and
teaching him. The widow is an important example of what women's roles were supposed to be.

Bless you, child, when you set out to thread a needle don't hold the thread still and fetch the needle
up to it; hold the needle still and poke the thread at it; that's the way a woman most always does, but
a man always does t'other way(Twain )."
This is vise versa to "throwing like a girl". Men might be good at playing sports, but women are
good at the house jobs. Even though these jobs may seem "gross" to men, women have still
perfected it and become really good at it. This is an attribute women should be proud of.
"when you throw at a rat or anything, hitch yourself up a tiptoe and fetch your hand up over your
head as awkward as you can, and miss your rat about six or seven foot. Throw stiff–armed from the
shoulder, like there was a pivot there for it to turn on, like a girl; not from the wrist and elbow, with
your arm out to one side, like a boy. And, mind you, when a girl tries to catch anything in her lap she
throws her knees apart; she don't clap them together, the way you did when you catched the lump of
lead(Twain )."
Women, or girls, are known for being bad at things. Men are superior to women in how the can
work, and play and basically everything. This quote shows how many look down on girls based on
"how they throw". It is not a bad thing to throw differently, people just view it as

Huckleberry Finn : American Literature And Culture

The Boy Who Couldn't Tell the Truth
As kids grow and mature through the different stages of life, they live through experiences which
help them create a moral and ethical identity for themselves, based on honorable values.
Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer are the first kids depicted in American literature, and through
them, Mark Twain develops the concept of kid, by having them participate in comical manipulation
and deception. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has two principal lies, imaginative lying and
deceitful lying. Lying and deceit are central themes Twain uses to develop the blueprint of a child.

Huck and Tom mastered the definition of youth; savage, fearless, adventure loving, witty, clever,
and masters of their environment by means of lying. A lie is described as "a false statement or
action, especially one made with intent to deceit others", and this definition is brilliantly depicted
through Twain's characters within the novel. Huckleberry and Tom are portrayed as youthful
fourteen year olds, while one is characterized as a kid, the other is considered a child, respectively.
While they are similar, there are distinguishing difference between a kid and child. Tom Sawyer is
the perfect child character. Mark Twain highlights Tom's character as a perfect depiction of a child; a
vivid imagination, as he portrays what he reads in books to his imagination. Being the leader of his
gang, Tom was regarded with respect as he mastered a leadership role all kids aspire towards. Tom
grew up in a civilized home, where he was to behave properly and politely, yet he was still a free–
natured kid that loved risk and adventure. Tom was daring, imaginative, and inventive, and he
created an imaginative world of robbery and fun, a world where no one actually got hurt as he
explains, "We played robber...we hadn't robbed nobody, we hadn't killed any people, but only just
pretend" (41). His lies were just plain fun, with no intended harm, but his own amusement, showing

Huckleberry Finn Chapter 1 Journal
Chapter I Reading Log (7/23/15)
The novel starts off by creating the premise in which the narrator and main protagonist, Huckleberry
Finn introduces himself and the other characters in their current circumstances. He explains that in
the previously written book, he and his friend Tom Sawyer had discovered money that robbers had
hidden in a cave, making them wealthy. The Widow Douglas had taken Huckleberry into her care as
her son, attempting to civilize his behaviors and demeanor. Huck couldn't stand this change of
lifestyle and tried to run away only to be chided by Tom, urging him to respectfully return to her.
She has been teaching him etiquette and manners yet has failed to fully reform Huck and mold him
into the son she wanted him to be. He didn't like praying before dinner, engaging in religious
studies, and was prohibited from smoking. Her sister, Miss Watson gives him spelling lessons and
reprimands Huck for his restlessness. She teaches Huck about a "bad ... Show more content on

Chapter II (7–23–15) When Tom and Huck attempt to sneak out, Huck accidentally trips on a root,
creating a noise and alerting one of the slaves named Jim. The two boys crouch down and stay still,
hoping to not be detected. Huck soon becomes overcome with irresistible itches all over his body,
struggling to fight the urge to scratch them. Jim then declares that he wouldn't be leaving his
position until he discovered where the sound came from but soon falls asleep. Tom wants to tie Jim

Albert C. Barnes : A Man Beyond His Time
Albert C. Barnes was a man beyond his time. While the post–impressionists were being scrutinized
and just starting to become better known, Barnes was collecting their work and amassing a huge
collection of post–impressionist and early modern art. The Barnes Foundation, created by Barnes in
1922 to "promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts and
horticulture."1, has one of the greatest collections of post–impressionist and early modern art in
existence. With extensive collections from Renoir, Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso, and many more art
masters of the time. These collections were artfully arranged for display in a building Barnes crafted
specifically for the display and study of his collection. Barnes willed his collection to never be sold,
rented, or lent to any extent and to stay where he left it. Since his sudden death in 1951, this
statement has been scrutinized and debated, ultimately leading to turmoil and conflict even in the
courts, and the collection was eventually moved from Barnes' space in Merion County, Pennsylvania
to the center of Philadelphia. This decision to move the Barnes Foundation, while questionable in
process, was ultimately the right decision because the Barnes collection is so fantastic that everyone
should be able to see it, opening to more viewers promotes the education that Barnes was passionate
about, it was the best way to keep the Barnes Foundation open for business financially, and it is best

Contradictions
One of the oldest problems of humanity is the contradiction between beliefs and actions. The
Shepardsons and the Grangerfords act out this contradiction in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by
Mark Twain.
Although these families attend church and pay lip service to the teachings of the church, they do not
live by these teachings. The act of Christian men and woman, such as in the Catholic faith, is often
contradictory as to how they believe they should live their lives.

This consistent routine has embedded itself within the individual with no possible chance of exodus.
The feud and church goers are similar even in their dress attire, yet another entity these two have
share in. Col. Grangerford is described as a "gentleman all over; and so was his family" (Twain, 96).
The
Colonel was kind, well–mannered, quiet and far from frivolish. The
Colonel dressed well, was clean–shaven and his face had "not a sign of red in it anywheres" (Twain,
96). These qualities are similar to those that one would find at a religious service. The person would
most probably attend in their best outfit, clean shaven, and cleaned from head to toe. Their manners
would be comparable to Col. Grangerford as well, acting like a gentleman at all times during while
attending the service. Both the feud and the attendance of church are this consistent routine, and
both are followed till without understanding until the individual who partakes in them parish. For
thousands of years, people have attended some type of liturgical service without full understanding
of it, and for several generations, the Shepardsons and
Grangerfords have been feuding with no real basis or understanding as to why.

Satires of Education in The Adventures of Huckleberry...
In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck is not educated, but through his adventures he proves
himself to be more quick–witted by outsmarting the educated people throughout the novel. Huck
was not raised in what you would consider a "proper home" and as a result of that he has a lack of
education. Huck's pap was the town drunk and for a short period of time, in paps absence, Huck was
taken in by Widow Douglas as an attempt to civilize him. The Widow put Huck into school and
shortly after his admission he was forced to leave school due to the returning of pap. Pap did not
treat Huck in anyway like a father figure would treat his son, "I was all over welts." (Twain 24) pap
beat on Huck and locked him up whenever he went out just so that ... Show more content on

The only thing that distinguishes the two characters is that Tom's motives were based off of the
adventure books he's read, whereas Huck has more common sense because all of his motives are
based on experience and not fiction. Tom's common sense is compared to Huck's in chapter 3 of The
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn when Tom claims that (he fought a pack of Spaniards and A–rabs)
"[Huck says], But there warn't no Spaniards and A–rabs, and there warn't no camels nor no
elephants. It warn't anything but a Sunday– school picnic..." (Twain 13) "So then I judged that all
that stuff was one of Tom Sawyer's lies. I reckoned he believed in the A–rabs and elephants, but for
me I think different"(Twain 14).
Mark Twain satires society and portrays it as being uncivilized with drunkenness (Nyirubugara). As
mentioned in the beginning of the novel, Pap is the first person introduced as being a drunk. Pap did
not like the fact that Huck was becoming smarter than him and when he regained custody of Huck
he made sure that Huck stopped going to school. Since Huck was no longer in school, he spent most
of his days protecting himself from his drunken father's abuse, so once he ran away it was not hard
for him to shift into adulthood.
Huck's morality started to change soon after he allowed Jim, a runaway slave, to come along with
him on his adventure to freedom. This decision shocked me but, as a result of Huck meeting

What Is The Mood Of Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon?
"Time is gone the song is over", now what? In life humanity craves more time. Time is the one
fixation we cannot get enough of. Since humanity is required to age, time seems to slip away. We
don't comprehend how time is synthesized. Society knows it goes on forever, regardless of what
happens in life. Pink Floyd's album, Dark Side Of The Moon, had immense success. It was recorded
in the summer of 1972 on Capital records. The song Time was written by Roger Waters and
recorded in the progressive era of rock and roll. The song is important because it demonstrates how
people don't realize that time slips away. The song displays this by means of engineering,
instruments, lyrics, and arrangement. Therefore, taking us into how this song fits the historical
context of the progressive era of rock and roll.
The song Time had aesthetic engineering that sets the mood of time ticking away. The band
consisted of David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Rick Wright, and Nick Mason. At first glance Pink
Floyd made the decision not to do use quadraphonic mix. Quadraphonic sound consists of four
channels, right front, left front, right rear, and left rear. This provides you with the impression of
sound coming from a corresponding number of separate sources. Pink Floyd realized that
quadraphonic sound was just beginning to develop at that time making them change their minds and
incorporate a quad mix. Which was arranged by their engineer Alan Parsons. The song starts with

Analysis Of A Simple Heart
Taneka .D.G. Evelyn
ENG–212–042
Dec.12th, 2011
The realist period was a time of the nineteenth century in which authors, artists and other people in
literature provided in–depth accounts of events that occurred during that time period. In Gustave
Flaubert's "A Simple Heart," he explored the lives of two fictional women of different classes
(middle and lower) during the realist period. Through characters like Madame Aubain, a rich woman
and Felicite, her poor, gentle maid, he provided the reader with a sneak peek of nineteenth–century
France.
The first sentence of "A Simple Heart" gives the reader an ironic insight of the protagonist Felicite.
It states "Madame Aubain's servant Felicite was the envy of the ladies of Pont–l' Évëque for half a
century"(2208, A Simple Heart).By giving a brief synopsis of the protagonist, it makes the reader
wonder why was she the envy of the other women around her. She was serving another woman.
What was there to envy? Flaubert must have done this on purpose to get the reader to put a price on
happiness. Even the words used to describe the other women "ladies" would bring a great deal of
doubt to the reader.
Flaubert introduced the seemingly simpler character, Felicite first, with a rather vivid and detailed
description. He portrayed her as a woman that was different from the others. Being a maid, Felicite
was not expected to be complex and Flaubert did her much justice. He described "She rose at
daybreak to be in time for Mass, and worked till evening without stopping. Then, when dinner was
over, the plates and dishes were in order, and the door shut fast, she thrust the
Evelyn 2
log under the ashes and went to sleep in front of the heath with a rosary in her
hand"(2209, A Simple Heart). He made her seem very uniformed, as though she had nothing
important to do. She appeared religious and organized but lacked that complexity that comes with
being a woman. The routine was the same and therefore proved that a woman of lower class was
bounded to the house.
Felicite became so accustomed to her routine that she decided to stay in the house to the very end.
According to

What Is The Controversy Of Huckleberry Finn
Some literary critics agree with Ernest Hemingway that "all modern American literature comes from
one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn... it's the best book we've had. All American
writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since,"
(Hemingway). While others feel that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn does not belong in the
literary canon and that it "is itself literally incoherent" (Jehlen). Unquestionably, it is now one of the
"most often debated major work in American literature" (Fertig). Although The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn has caused several controversies, one major debate is whether if it is racist or not.

Not only is the King selling Jim back into slavery cruel treatment in itself, but Twain portrays the
Phelpses as kind–hearted, gentle Christians. Huckleberry mentions that Silas Phelps "was the
innocentest, best old soul [he] ever see. But it warn't surprising; because [Silas] warn't only just a
farmer, he was a preacher, too" and when his wife Sally Phelps sees Tom walking up to the house,
who she does not know is Tom, she does not hesitate to having him over and excitingly states, "why,
I do believe it's a stranger... put on another plate for dinner" (Twain 229). Even though they treat Jim
better than others have, they still treat him fit to their beliefs and keep him locked up in a shed since
they believe that it is right to own him as their property because the color of his skin makes him
worth less than a white person. The Phelpses are depicted as good, big–hearted people even if they
embrace the South's institution of slavery. Tom Sawyer is actually harsher than the Phelpses, and
decides to help Huck free Jim. Unbeknownst to Huck and Jim, Jim's former owner actually passed
away right after he ran away so Jim has been free this whole time. There were multiple instances
when the boys could have set Jim free and all they had to do was "to lift up the bedstead and slip off
the chain" to get him freed, but Tom needed "a lot of difficulties and dangers" to free Jim

The Adventures of Huck Finn: A Coming Of Age Novel The novel ‘The Adventures of Huck Finn'

the good of the plan that ain't no more trouble than that?" The final sign of maturity occurs at the
end of the novel when Tom and Huck are mistaken for thieves and Tom is shot. If this occurred at
the beginning of the novel, Huck would have probably tried to fix it himself, making up a grand
story to go along. Now, at the end of the novel, after Huck has matured, he decides to blow their

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain Essay
Huck Finn, the protagonist in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, comes from the lowest level of
society and yet his personality is more pure than anyone else. Huck's father is the town drunk, and
because he avoids his father, Huck is frequently homeless. The difference in background distances
Huck from the mainstream society making him skeptical to change, as he is when the Widow

moral outlook on life that is pure. Huck encounters the slave Jim who is a factor into his parting

My Experience Of High School Experience In Middle School
When I was in middle school, I was on the quiz bowl team. The tournaments were nonchalant, the
questions were manageable, and the teams all competed to have a good time, not just to advance.
Due to the enjoyable nature of my middle school experience, I decided that I would brave the
unknown murky waters of high school scholars bowl. I was under the assumption that it would be
the same for the most part; however, this assumption was severely misguided. Strolling into the
classroom for my first day of practice, I realized I was surrounded by people who seemed to be far
more knowledgeable than me. A prime example would be Macy Davis. Sitting at the front of the
room, Mr. Kucharik was manning the buzzer system. Frightened because I was a young naïve
freshman, I hesitantly sat down as rumor led me to believe that Mr. K despised freshman. The
practice was not at all what I expected and was demanding to say the least. Asking us impossible
college level questions, Mr. Kucharik seemed to love watching us struggle; furthermore, the man
was sadistic as he transitioned from questions such as "What kind of clouds produce

Huck Finn: The Character Of Huckleberry Finn
Huckleberry Finn: he is the main character and narrator of the novel. He is an poor boy who runs
away from the house of the Widow Douglas and her sister Miss Watson, his adoptive family to be
free of society and civilization. Huck is Tom Sawyer's best friend and sidekick. In the novel, Huck
had many adventures with Jim, Miss Watson's slave during their journeys down the Missouri River.
Together they have many adventures while they hide out and travel along the river. Huck is
attentive, intelligent (despite not being formally educated), and willing to come to his own
conclusions about important matters, even if these conclusions contradict society's norms.
Nevertheless, Huck is still a boy, and is influenced by others, particularly by his imaginative friend,
Tom.

Jim is superstitious and occasionally sentimental, but he is also intelligent and practical. Jim's
frequent acts of unselfishness, his longing for his family, and his friendship with both Huck and Tom
demonstrate to Huck that humanity has nothing to do with race.
Tom Sawyer: Tom is Huck's best friend. He enjoys having adventures and fantastic stories. Tom is
imaginative, dominating and stubborn.
Pap: Huck's abusive and alcoholic father who plots to steal his son's reward money. When he
appears at the beginning of the novel, he is disgusting, has ghostlike white skin and ragged clothes.
Pap is against Huck being educated and torments and beats him frequently. Pap has a lot of
prejudice and represents the failure of family structures in the novel.
Miss Watson Widow Douglas's sister who tries to civilize Huck through manners and religion. She
is thin, demanding, and severe.

Huckleberry Finn Morality Analysis
The Choice of Morality
In Michael Lackey's essay, "Beyond Good and Evil: Huckleberry Finn on Human Intimacy", Lackey
argues that Mark Twain's novel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, seeks to destroy and abolish
morality and considers morality socially, psychology, and politically destructive. I agree with
Lackey's points that in the case of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn accepting morality means
rejecting friendship and accepting friendship means rejecting morality. However, I don't believe
such an argument adequately addresses the base of morality and human culture. In the course of this
essay, I will argue that morality is not evil and acts as a good force more often than a bad. I believe
that morality has to be determined by each person ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lackey says that, "without the culture's valorization of morality, Tom could not effectively justify
his systematic abuse of Jim." (498) I disagree with Lackey's statement. I believe that even though
the culture during this time period had an obstructed view of morality, I predict that Tom wouldn't
have been able to get away with Jim's abuse. I believe that Aunt Sally or another character (if they
knew), would have stepped in and stopped Tom's antics. I do not think the way Tom acted reflects
the morals, per say, of a majority of people in this era, rather the "game" of a child. With that being
said, I do think that the view of morality that most people had during this time, allowed them to
have and control slaves without feeling guilty. Their view between right and wrong was obstructed.
Rather than binding everyone as a culture under common ground, they split apart, alienating humans
from each other based on skin color.
One of Lackeys major points in his essay is that Huck ultimately has to make the choice between
friendship and morality. If Huck wants to be moral, he can't free Jim, and if Huck want's to have a
friendship with Jim, he will suffer a loss of morality. We witness Huck's inner turmoil throughout
the novel, especially when Jim is talking about his family and how he's going to work his way to
free them, and if that doesn't work, steal them. (Twain __)

Essay about Huck Finn
Racism and Slavery in Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn Throughout Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn,
racism and slavery are two major thematic concepts pulsing through the novel. Through incidents,
comments made by the characters, and statements by the narrator, Twain enables the readers to
observe the attitudes of the people concerning discrimination and involuntary servitude before the
Emancipation Proclamation. Not only does his use of language and comments help the reader better
comprehend the social attitudes of the time period, it also enlightens the audience of Twain's attitude
towards slavery and racism. Twain is known for voicing his opinions and observations through
characters, and in this novel it is no different. The audience is ... Show more content on

Twain uses Pap's stupidity to show how racism was for the uneducated. Huck does not describe Jim
as harshly as Pap suggesting, through traits and characteristics, he is a better person that Pap. He
does not say anything negative about his physical appearance. He does call him a "nigger," however
that was socially acceptable at that time. In fact, Twain makes Jim a better, more caring father figure
to Huck. Jim actually cares for Huck's well–being when he says, ""Goodness gracious, is dat you,
Huck? ... It's too good for true, honey, it's too good for true. Lemme look at you chile, lemme feel o'
you. No, you ain' dead! you's back agin, 'live en soun', jis de same ole Huck–de same ole Huck,
thanks to goodness!" (63). Twain makes Jim the good guy and Pap the bad guy to show how
African– Americans are not all bad and whites are not all good. He expresses through these two
characters that blacks can actually be better people than whites, going against most beliefs back
then. Next, when Jim escapes from Miss Watson and finds Huck, Huck is happy he has someone to
pass time with. Forgetting about the moral standards of society he says, "I was ever so glad to see
Jim. I warn't lonesome now...Then I says, 'It's good daylight. L'es get breakfast. Make up your
campfire good'" (31). Again Twain used the relationship between Huck and Jim to show true caring.

The Sun Also Rises is a novel by Ernest Hemingway (1926). Hemingway deliberately shaped the
protagonists in The Sun Also Rises as allegorical figures (Bloom, 1985, pp. 107). The novel
symbolizes the impotence felt by the main characters after World War I.
Jake Barnes, the narrator, had a wound from an "accident" that happened during the war. The injury
damaged his genitalia. As a result, Barnes could no longer make love, but could still feel the desire.
Barnes felt physically less than a man. Barnes made a comment about hating "homos". This shows
that Barnes was insecure about his masculinity. For this reason, he later found himself strongly
attracted to the young bullfighter, Pedro Romero, whose manhood stood without women.

Berkhan recommends intense resistance training be performed no less than two and no more than
four times per week, eating the vast majority of calories after training. This diet suggests aiming for
higher protein and carbohydrate consumption on training days and, on rest days, still focusing on
protein but, instead, consuming more fat than carbohydrate. 2. The Alternate–Day Diet This
intermittent fasting protocol was developed by Dr. James Johnson. The idea is that food is consumed

Uncle Tom's Cabin
Rarely does a one work of literature change a society or start it down the road to cataclysmic
controversy. One such work is Harriet Beecher Stowe's, Uncle Tom's Cabin. Considered by many,
one the most influential American works of fiction ever published. Uncle Tom's Cabin contracts
many different attitudes that Southerners as well as Northerners shared towards slavery. It shows the
evils and cruelties of slavery and the cruelty, in particular how masters treat their slaves and how
families are torn apart because of slavery. Before the publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin, information
regarding the evils of slavery and the treatment of slaves was not readily available. Uncle Tom's

Shelby's view of slavery. Mrs. Shelby, who lives according to the cult of domesticity, tries to teach
her slaves how to raise a family and establish a home. Nonetheless, later in the novel her husband's
business transactions destroy the emotions she has tried to instill in her slaves, her one chance at
domesticity on the plantation.
It is noted, by an unknown White Northern author, that prejudice between the white and black races,
primarily the first, is a main theme of the book. Stowe infers that no matter how benighted or
besotted their character, a slave will ultimately get to heaven. But at the same time Stowe is unable
to look upon a white face without tracing in it something sinister and repulsive. An example of this
can be seen as follows, "Some flowers of Eden they still inherit, but the trail of the serpent is over
them all." (Stowe, 255)
Stowe's novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, had a much more major impact on African Americans than any
other group of Americans. Stowe convinced her readers that the institution of slavery itself was evil,
because it supported people like Simon Legree and enslaved people like Uncle Tom. In Uncle Tom's
Cabin, Simon Legree was the prime example of the group opposed to the idea of abolition. He was a
Louisiana cotton–plantation owner that brutally beat his slaves, who in all situations did not deserve
the beatings issued. Legree believed in working his slaves until death,

Peyton Manning: Journey to Greatness Essay example
Some people are born with natural god given skills and ability while others who are not that lucky
and have to work twice as hard just to get the same result. And then there are those rare individual
who even though they are born with the talent, they still work just as hard and sometimes even
harder to keep improving. It is called determination and that is a trait that all the great athletes share
and it is what separates the great ones from the just good ones. This is perfect way to describe
Peyton Williams Manning, who is considered to be one of the most prolific passers in NFL history.

was largely viewed as the nation's number one football recruit in his senior season.
"I'm proud to be Archie's son. Being a quarterback, I had my mentor and hero living in the same

In the fall of 1994, Manning enrolled at the University of Tennessee. Over his four–year career,
Manning torched opponents with a big arm and dead–on accuracy, setting an astounding 42
conference, school and NCAA records. In all, he passed for 11,201 yards, registered 863
completions, and connected for 89 touchdowns. Manning also developed a reputation as a voracious
student of the game, poring over game film to analyse his opponents. In 1998, the Indianapolis Colts
selected Manning with the first overall pick in the NFL draft and that would be the moment that
turned the franchise fortunes around. His rookie year, however, was far from perfect. Moments of
brilliance were often followed by bouts of struggle as Manning experienced some expected growing
pains. While establishing new NFL records for completions (326), attempts (575), passing yards
(3,379) and touchdowns (26), he also threw an NFL–leading 28 interceptions for a team that
struggled to a 3–13 finish. In an

Starbucks and notes that wine sales could bring in "latte–like" profits" (Horovitz, 2010). The biggest
challenges for Starbucks is gaining entry into this new market and retaining customer loyalty.
Starbucks understands the coffee and the liquor markets both require government regulation. Since
most of Starbucks coffee is grown by the company in/out of the U.S. it's the percentage that is
imported from foreign producers that will cause the most challenge to Starbucks manufacturing
revenue. In order of Starbucks to gain entry to the wine and beer industry it will have to rely on its
advantage on handling government regulation, but the blending of markets will require some
creative strategies. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in the United Sates mandates what
products are sold for consumption in U.S. markets. Starbucks marketing executives and
shareholders know that imposing certain restrictions of foreign imports by the government will limit
competition by making it more costly. More subtly, a firm can favor laws that raise its costs but raise
competitors' costs by more. Health,

Engineering : The Ideas And Aspects Of Engineering
Students after finishing their study in high school tends to study engineering because they believe
that their skills in science and mathematics are good enough to be an engineering student. Although
it is a good chance to study engineering, students underestimate the work that is waiting for them. In
addition, they underestimate the importance of communication, negotiation, and the amount of
responsibility they have to make their own decisions in a company or in a society. To be an engineer,
you must use your imagination first. You as an engineer, you are obliged to be the problem solver,
you have to use your own skills and abilities to fix any design problem without referring to any
other source like e–books. E–books are likely to give you some ideas on how you can fix the issue.
In the future, students have to understand that engineering does not require only science and
mathematics skills as it requires imagination and innovation. As an engineer, you have a lot of work
and responsibilities that insure that your work is safe and can't damage the surrounding. In our
world, population is increasing every year. Till this year, we have about seven billion people, all
needing food, water, education, employment, and safe shelter. However as the number of people is
increasing, the number of human issues is increasing. In this complex world, engineers can be
described by the problem solvers. First of all, to be an engineer you somehow must be creative and

What Aspects Of The Museum Provide The Visitor With An...
"When we say that something is original ... we are referring to the aspect of what can be called
authenticity or genuineness, that which is unique not because it is necessarily different in topic or
technique, but because it embodies one person's experience with deep particularity." This statement,
made by the poet Jane Hirshfield, has provoked a reevaluation of my ideas of an authentic work of
art, especially within the museum. Authenticity has some definite, and some more vague definitions.
In the following paper, I plan to explore what aspects of the museum provide the visitor with an
authentic experience, allowing them to access something authentic. Three institutions will be
examined: Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library (Winterthur), the Barnes Foundation, and
Philadelphia's Magic Gardens (PMG); each institution provides the visitor with a different type of
experience, some more authentic than others. I would first like to start by examining Winterthur
within the context of the article, "The Precession of Simulacra," by Jean Baudrillard. Baudrillard
describes different levels and types of simulacra that exist, which I view as a sort of scale between
simulation and hyperreality, where the real is something entirely separate. Authenticity falls within
this model in the real. Winterthur exists in a state of hyperreality. It is a historic house, which was
once the home of Henry Francis du Pont, a collector of American decorative arts. In the 1950s the
house was converted

Legalizing Steroids Is Dangerous
Legalizing steroids is dangerous because they are not controllable. Steroids are becoming popular,
but no one is stopping to take a look at all the facts about the use of them. Remy an avid steroid user
who regrets using steroids suggests, "There is no controlled way to use steroids" (Campbell 3).
Everyone's bodies react different to what steroids can do. Some more dangerous than others.
Controlling steroid use is impossible because everyone uses different amounts and even a little can
be dangerous. Harrison Pope a professor of psychiatry at Harvard's McLean Hospital says, "The
preliminary data on steroids suggest that long–term use damages the muscle of the heart,
significantly increasing the risk of an attack" (Butterworth 2). A continued use of steroids would do
damage not only on the heart but the whole body as well. Heart damage is very likely while using
steroids. Views of the opposition suggest that they are not worried about the un–controlling factors.
Tim Cowlishaw a sports writer for the Pittsburgh Post–Gazette states, "I think if we made
everything legal, we would learn eventually which drugs and creams, and heaven forbid, antler
sprays actually have benefits and what their risks are" (Cowlishaw 1). If society made steroids legal,
controlling amounts would not be imaginable. Anyone could get their hands on it, which could lead
to over–use and endangerment of human health.

Analysis Of Gustave Caillebotte 's Paris Street
The general understanding of subjects in Impressionist paintings are often linked to a new
representation of a newfound modernized society. Beyond modernization in the nineteenth century
Impressionist paintings also discloses the newer economic and social state of that time: Capitalism.
By the mid–1800s people were divided into various classes, the most popular being the upper class
bourgeoisie and the working class proletariat. Industrialization increased the lust for commodities,
which in turn overburdened the working class. The division between status and wealth induced
strong social effects at the time, which resulted in a new sense of isolation.
Gustave Caillebotte's Paris Street; Rainy Day begun production in 1876 and was finished early in
1877, showing a flaneur's–eye view of an ordinary slice of bourgeois life. The painting shared
spotlight with Auguste Renoir's Ball at the Moulin de la Galette, and was first exhibited along with
Le Pont de L'Europe and Claude Monet's series of the Saint–Lazare train station at the third
Impressionist exhibition in 1877.
Paris Street; Rainy Day places us upon a rain–soaked sidewalk directly in front the Place de Dublin,
an intersection made up of eight streets near the Gare St. Lazare. A fashionably dressed bourgeois
couple who are often referred to as 'Flaneur's' are the major figures in the painting as they politely

Huck Finn Satire Essay
Satire in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Many authors use satire to discuss issues in society
that they have opinions on. These authors express their opinions by mocking the issues in a subtle
way in their writing. Throughout The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain satirizes many
societal elements. Three of these issues include the institution of slavery, organized religion, and
education. By satirizing slavery and the prejudice placed against blacks in Huck's society, Twain
takes a stance against these institutions. There are many situations throughout the novel that mock
slavery in different ways. Miss Watson's telling Huck to "pray every day," (10) yet she owned a

This causes him to be frustrated and to start resenting prayer and religion altogether. Later, when
Huck contemplates turning Jim in, he has an epiphany. Huck decided to get "a piece of paper and a
pencil," (213) and write a letter to Miss Watson, but he began to think about his actions, and he
decided that he will "go to hell" (214) anyway, so he "tore it up" (214). Organized religion and
society has taught Huck that turning Jim in is the right thing to do, but he cannot bring himself to do
it. Huck realizes that everyone's life is important. Huck's life–changing realization represents
Twain's own opinion on the issue of slavery. By mocking the issue of education, Twain's own ideas
are incorporated into the novel. When Tom and Huck form a gang, Tom is chosen as the leader.
When asked what "ransomed" (8) means, Tom claims that he does not know but they have "got to
do" (9) it, because he has "seen it in books" (9). The gang blindly follows Tom's orders because he is
the most educated out of the group. They believe that Tom's education automatically makes him
more intelligent than them. Later in the novel, Jim gets captured by the Phelps family. While trying
to break Jim out of his temporary jail, Tom claims that they must use "picks and shovels" and not
"modern conveniences" because it will be more authentic to a real jail–break (243). Huck goes along
with Tom's overly–elaborate and inconvenient plan to free Jim because he believes that

Dialectical Journal Chapter 4-14
7–4–15 Chapter 2 The chapter continues with the two boys, Tom and Huck, carefully walking
through the path. They walk past the kitchen, where they try to avoid Jim, Miss. Watson's slave. Jim
hears them and comes to investigate. The two boys are hiding, while Jim comes close to them, but
doesn't see them. Jim decides to stay in that position until he hears the noise again. While Huck is
debating whether he should scratch his nose, Jim falls asleep. Tom tells Huck about Jim, that he is
respected by the other slaves, for going against the devil. But Jim had begun to become cocky for
seeing the devil and fighting the witches. Tom and Huck go to a nearby village and get their recruits
for their gang. These recruits include Jo Harper, Ben Rogers,

Tom Sawyer Vs Huck Finn Analysis
In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Huck), author Mark Twain exposes antebellum society
ignorance and exploits the lack of education to his satirical advantage. Twain was adverse to slavery
and used the aforementioned problem to comment on slavery in Huck. Twain uses satire on
ignorance and the difference between book–smart and street–smart to show that slavery is morally
wrong. Twain shows the difference between two characters, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, to
illustrate his point. Tom Sawyer represents book–smarts and the educated, "civilized" general
population, whereas Huckleberry Finn represents street–smarts and the uneducated, underbelly of
the population that nonetheless provides a path to redemption in the southern society. Twain presents
Tom Sawyer as a very illogical, dramatic, by–the–book character. Tom believes the stories and tales
in book to be equal to the word of God himself. For Tom, everything has to happen exactly as it did
in the books he has read or else it is incorrect: "Why, blame it all, we've got to do it. Don't I tell you
it's in the books? Do you want to go to doing different from what's in the books, and get things all
muddled up?" (Twain 19). This rigid belief of Tom's leads him to act in very illogical ways and gets
him into trouble. When Huckleberry and Tom are trying to help Jim escape, Tom makes them do
many unnecessary things like make a rope ladder and and inscribe a coat of arms purely because
that's what happened in the books he

Barnes Foundation Controversy
Alfred Barnes, who had a passion for collecting famous artworks for educating and developing
character within individuals, founded The Barnes Foundation in 1922. He housed his collection in
his estate, which was located in the suburbs of Merion, Pennsylvania. Barnes believed that the
everyday man should have the opportunity to visit and appreciate honored artworks as well as to
improve from the estate's educational courses. Education is the priority; in fact, Barnes believed that
the foundation should not be considered an art museum. As stated by Barnes, the purpose of the
foundation was, "to be maintained perpetually for education in the appreciation of the fine arts and
as an educational experiment." The controversy arises decades after Barnes death. Barnes passed
away in 1951 and contained in his will, he specifically stated that in the Barnes ... Show more

Glanton started to increase admission prices, added a gift shop, and took other commercialized steps
to create a more standard art museum. All of these measures went against Alfred Barnes's original
intent for the educational facility, where he specifically stated the collection should not be used for
commercial display. Glanton argues that the purpose was to raise money for the renovation and care
for the building and collection. Add why his argument is discredited. Another ethical breach Glanton
spearheaded in, was the decision to move the entire Barnes collection to downtown Philadelphia,
rather than following Barnes's instruction to preserve the artworks perpetually in his estate. Again,
Glanton argues that the decision was to create more revenue for the artworks themselves; however
Alfred Barnes's legacy was disrespected beyond belief as there were other ways to fund the
collection while still staying true to Barnes's endowment. It is clear that Glanton went against

barnes and noble Essay
Barnes & Noble does business –– big business –– by the book. As the #1 bookseller in the US,
it operates about 650 superstores throughout 49 states and the District of Columbia under the
banners Barnes & Noble, Bookstop, and Bookstar, as well as about 200 mall stores using the
names B. Dalton, Doubleday, and Scribner's. The company's GameStop subsidiary is the #1 US
video game retailer with about 1,500 stores under the names Babbage's Etc., GameStop, and
FuncoLand. Barnes & Noble owned about 75% of online book seller barnesandnoble.com after
purchasing Bertelsmann's interest in 2003; Barnes & Noble then purchased all remaining
shares and took the company private in May 2004.

BDB changed its name to Barnes & Noble in 1991. With superstore sales booming, the retailer
went public in 1993 (the college stores remained private). It bought 20% of Canadian bookseller
Chapters (now Indigo Books) in 1996 (then sold in 1999).
The bookseller went online in 1997, and in 1998 sold a 50% stake in its Web operation subsidiary to
Bertelsmann (which it re–purchased in 2003) in an attempt to strengthen both companies in the
battle against online rival Amazon.com.
Also in 1998 Barnes & Noble agreed to buy #1 US book distributor Ingram Book Group, but
the deal was called off in 1999 because of antitrust concerns. Also in 1999 barnesandnoble.com
went public and Barnes & Noble bought small book publisher J.B. Fairfax International USA,
which included coffee–table book publisher Michael Friedman Publishing Group. Later that year the
company bought a 49% stake in book publishing portal iUniverse.com (later reduced to 22%). It
also bought Riggio's financially struggling Babbage's Etc., a chain of about 500 Babbage's, Software
Etc., and GameStop stores, for $215 million.
The company's Babbage's Etc. subsidiary (renamed GameStop, Inc.) acquired video game retailer
Funco for $161.5 million in 2000. In 2001 Barnes & Noble joined barnesandnoble.com in
acquiring a majority stake in magazine subscription seller enews.com.
In February 2002 the company completed an initial public offering of its

Huckleberry Finn Quotes
The widow she cried over me, and called me a poor lost lamb, and she called me a lot of other
names, too, but she never meant no harm by it. (1.3)
Tom he made a sign to me – kind of a little noise with his mouth – and we went creeping away on
our hands and knees. When we was ten foot off Tom whispered to me, and wanted to tie Jim to the
tree for fun. (2.6)
"But mind, you said you wouldn' tell–you know you said you wouldn' tell, Huck." "Well, I did. I
said I wouldn't, and I'll stick to it. Honest INJUN, I will. People would call me a low–down
Abolitionist and despise me for keeping mum–but that don't make no difference. I ain't a–going to
tell, and I ain't a–going back there, anyways. So, now, le's know all about it." (8.52, 8.53)

When we was ten foot off Tom whispered to me, and wanted to tie Jim to the tree for fun. (2.6) This
reminds me of when me and my cousins would mess around after we were done helping our
grandparents. Once we were playing a game and we ended up tying one of my cousins to a light
pole. Even though, my cousins and I said some mean words, we always knew that we were just
joking around and could not take anything to heart. "But mind, you said you wouldn' tell–you know
you said you wouldn' tell, Huck." "Well, I did. I said I wouldn't, and I'll stick to it. Honest INJUN, I
will. People would call me a low–down Abolitionist and despise me for keeping mum–but that don't
make no difference. I ain't a–going to tell, and I ain't a–going back there, anyways. So, now, le's
know all about it." (8.52, 8.53) This reminds of all the times me and my cousins would do or say
senseless things. Sometimes we do not always trust each other, but at the end, we remember that we
are family. Family should be able to trust and have each others backs no matter the situation. After
reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn I learned that Huck has been through so much.
Throughout the story I found many quotes that reminded me of fun times and family. Huck had
some hard times from getting beat by his father to learning how to rob people and becoming part as

Sexism In Huck Finn

  • 1. Sexism In Huck Finn The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is an adventurous story following Huck and Jim's adventures along the Mississippi River and the unfamiliar characters they come across. Through the strong focus on adventure, Huck Finn's childlike innocence most Americans desire, the important lessons that can benefit everyone, and the illustration of the United State's history through racism and sexism, Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn proves to be a good model for an American classic novel. A strong focus in the novel is Huck's desire for adventure. Adventure plays such an enormous role in our modern society, with the huge quantity of action movies, a large focus on fast–paced, exciting commercials, and an enormous market for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One key lesson indicated is what's easy, isn't always the right thing to do. When Jim gets caught and brought to the Phelps's house, Huck is faced with the dilemma of helping Jim escape, or to leave him there and write to his owner, Miss Watson. When Huck writes a letter, he feels "good and all washed clean of sin for the first time I had ever felt so in my life," (Twain 213). But after thinking back on all the kind things Jim has done to help him, Huck begins to feel conflicted. Realizing that sending the letter is only the easy way out, and the right thing to do is to help Jim is an important step for Huck. Huck's shift in his decision to do what's right, not what's the easiest is a very important lesson to learn for all readers. Although the book is filled with problematic and racist statements, it does encourage equality between races, an important lesson at the time of it's publishing. By creating Jim to be a much stronger father figure to Huck than his own father, it contradicts negative stereotypes about African Americans. Through writing about Huck overcoming his moral predicaments associated with helping Jim escape Missouri, Mark Twain encourages the audience to conquer these problems as well. Because of the moral messages The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is filled with, it helps to promote ethical behavior in society, an important concept in a classic novel. She put me in them new clothes again, and I couldn't do nothing but sweat and sweat, and feel all cramped up. Well, then, the old thing commenced again. The widow rung a bell for supper, and you had to come to time(Twain 1–2)." The widow was one of Huck's first somewhat stable parental figure in his life. She feels the need to take him in and educate him. Her main jobs include clothing him, washing him, feeding him, and teaching him. The widow is an important example of what women's roles were supposed to be. "If Emmeline Grangerford could make poetry like that before she was fourteen, there ain't ... Bless you, child, when you set out to thread a needle don't hold the thread still and fetch the needle up to it; hold the needle still and poke the thread at it; that's the way a woman most always does, but a man always does t'other way(Twain )." This is vise versa to "throwing like a girl". Men might be good at playing sports, but women are good at the house jobs. Even though these jobs may seem "gross" to men, women have still perfected it and become really good at it. This is an attribute women should be proud of. "when you throw at a rat or anything, hitch yourself up a tiptoe and fetch your hand up over your head as awkward as you can, and miss your rat about six or seven foot. Throw stiff–armed from the shoulder, like there was a pivot there for it to turn on, like a girl; not from the wrist and elbow, with your arm out to one side, like a boy. And, mind you, when a girl tries to catch anything in her lap she throws her knees apart; she don't clap them together, the way you did when you catched the lump of lead(Twain )." Women, or girls, are known for being bad at things. Men are superior to women in how the can work, and play and basically everything. This quote shows how many look down on girls based on "how they throw". It is not a bad thing to throw differently, people just view it as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer are the first kids depicted in American literature, and through them, Mark Twain develops the concept of kid, by having them participate in comical manipulation and deception. Huck and Tom mastered the definition of youth; savage, fearless, adventure loving, witty, clever, and masters of their environment by means of lying. A lie is described as "a false statement or action, especially one made with intent to deceit others", and this definition is brilliantly depicted through Twain's characters within the novel. Huckleberry and Tom are portrayed as youthful fourteen year olds, while one is characterized as a kid, the other is considered a child, respectively. While they are similar, there are distinguishing difference between a kid and child. Tom Sawyer is the perfect child character. Mark Twain highlights Tom's character as a perfect depiction of a child; a vivid imagination, as he portrays what he reads in books to his imagination. Being the leader of his gang, Tom was regarded with respect as he mastered a leadership role all kids aspire towards. Tom grew up in a civilized home, where he was to behave properly and politely, yet he was still a free– natured kid that loved risk and adventure. Tom was daring, imaginative, and inventive, and he created an imaginative world of robbery and fun, a world where no one actually got hurt as he explains, "We played robber...we hadn't robbed nobody, we hadn't killed any people, but only just pretend" (41). His lies were just plain fun, with no intended harm, but his own amusement, showing that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Huckleberry Finn Chapter 1 Journal Chapter I Reading Log (7/23/15) The novel starts off by creating the premise in which the narrator and main protagonist, Huckleberry Finn introduces himself and the other characters in their current circumstances. He explains that in the previously written book, he and his friend Tom Sawyer had discovered money that robbers had hidden in a cave, making them wealthy. The Widow Douglas had taken Huckleberry into her care as her son, attempting to civilize his behaviors and demeanor. Huck couldn't stand this change of lifestyle and tried to run away only to be chided by Tom, urging him to respectfully return to her. She has been teaching him etiquette and manners yet has failed to fully reform Huck and mold him into the son she wanted him to be. While the post–impressionists were being scrutinized and just starting to become better known, Barnes was collecting their work and amassing a huge collection of post–impressionist and early modern art. The Barnes Foundation, created by Barnes in 1922 to "promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts and horticulture."1, has one of the greatest collections of post–impressionist and early modern art in existence. With extensive collections from Renoir, Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso, and many more art masters of the time. These collections were artfully arranged for display in a building Barnes crafted specifically for the display and study of his collection. Barnes willed his collection to never be sold, rented, or lent to any extent and to stay where he left it. Since his sudden death in 1951, this statement has been scrutinized and debated, ultimately leading to turmoil and conflict even in the courts, and the collection was eventually moved from Barnes' space in Merion County, Pennsylvania to the center of Philadelphia. This decision to move the Barnes Foundation, while questionable in process, was ultimately the right decision because the Barnes collection is so fantastic that everyone should be able to see it, opening to more viewers promotes the education that Barnes was passionate about, it was the best way to keep the Barnes Foundation open for business financially, and it is best for the art itself ... The Colonel dressed well, was clean–shaven and his face had "not a sign of red in it anywheres" (Twain, 96). These qualities are similar to those that one would find at a religious service. The person would most probably attend in their best outfit, clean shaven, and cleaned from head to toe. Their manners would be comparable to Col. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck is not educated, but through his adventures he proves himself to be more quick–witted by outsmarting the educated people throughout the novel. Huck was not raised in what you would consider a "proper home" and as a result of that he has a lack of education. Huck's pap was the town drunk and for a short period of time, in paps absence, Huck was taken in by Widow Douglas as an attempt to civilize him. The Widow put Huck into school and shortly after his admission he was forced to leave school due to the returning of pap. As mentioned in the beginning of the novel, Pap is the first person introduced as being a drunk. Pap did not like the fact that Huck was becoming smarter than him and when he regained custody of Huck he made sure that Huck stopped going to school. Since Huck was no longer in school, he spent most of his days protecting himself from his drunken father's abuse, so once he ran away it was not hard for him to shift into adulthood. Since humanity is required to age, time seems to slip away. We don't comprehend how time is synthesized. Society knows it goes on forever, regardless of what happens in life. Pink Floyd's album, Dark Side Of The Moon, had immense success. It was recorded in the summer of 1972 on Capital records. The song Time was written by Roger Waters and recorded in the progressive era of rock and roll. The song is important because it demonstrates how people don't realize that time slips away. The song displays this by means of engineering, instruments, lyrics, and arrangement. Therefore, taking us into how this song fits the historical context of the progressive era of rock and roll. The song Time had aesthetic engineering that sets the mood of time ticking away. The band consisted of David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Rick Wright, and Nick Mason. At first glance Pink Floyd made the decision not to do use quadraphonic mix. Quadraphonic sound consists of four channels, right front, left front, right rear, and left rear. This provides you with the impression of sound coming from a corresponding number of separate sources. • 17. Analysis Of A Simple Heart Taneka .D.G. Evelyn ENG–212–042 Dec.12th, 2011 The realist period was a time of the nineteenth century in which authors, artists and other people in literature provided in–depth accounts of events that occurred during that time period. In Gustave Flaubert's "A Simple Heart," he explored the lives of two fictional women of different classes (middle and lower) during the realist period. Through characters like Madame Aubain, a rich woman and Felicite, her poor, gentle maid, he provided the reader with a sneak peek of nineteenth–century France. The first sentence of "A Simple Heart" gives the reader an ironic insight of the protagonist Felicite. It states "Madame Aubain's servant Felicite was the envy of the ladies of Pont–l' Évëque for half a century"(2208, A Simple Heart).By giving a brief synopsis of the protagonist, it makes the reader wonder why was she the envy of the other women around her. She was serving another woman. What was there to envy? Flaubert must have done this on purpose to get the reader to put a price on happiness. Even the words used to describe the other women "ladies" would bring a great deal of doubt to the reader. Flaubert introduced the seemingly simpler character, Felicite first, with a rather vivid and detailed description. He portrayed her as a woman that was different from the others. Being a maid, Felicite was not expected to be complex and Flaubert did her much justice. He described "She rose at daybreak to be in time for Mass, and worked till evening without stopping. Then, when dinner was over, the plates and dishes were in order, and the door shut fast, she thrust the Evelyn 2 log under the ashes and went to sleep in front of the heath with a rosary in her hand"(2209, A Simple Heart). He made her seem very uniformed, as though she had nothing important to do. She appeared religious and organized but lacked that complexity that comes with being a woman. The routine was the same and therefore proved that a woman of lower class was bounded to the house.

What Is The Controversy Of Huckleberry Finn Some literary critics agree with Ernest Hemingway that "all modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn... it's the best book we've had. All American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since," (Hemingway). While others feel that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn does not belong in the literary canon and that it "is itself literally incoherent" (Jehlen). Even though they treat Jim better than others have, they still treat him fit to their beliefs and keep him locked up in a shed since they believe that it is right to own him as their property because the color of his skin makes him worth less than a white person. The Phelpses are depicted as good, big–hearted people even if they embrace the South's institution of slavery. Tom Sawyer is actually harsher than the Phelpses, and decides to help Huck free Jim. Huckleberry Finn Morality Analysis The Choice of Morality In Michael Lackey's essay, "Beyond Good and Evil: Huckleberry Finn on Human Intimacy", Lackey argues that Mark Twain's novel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, seeks to destroy and abolish morality and considers morality socially, psychology, and politically destructive. I agree with Lackey's points that in the case of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn accepting morality means rejecting friendship and accepting friendship means rejecting morality. In the course of this essay, I will argue that morality is not evil and acts as a good force more often than a bad. I believe that morality has to be determined by each person ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lackey says that, "without the culture's valorization of morality, Tom could not effectively justify his systematic abuse of Jim." (498) I disagree with Lackey's statement. I believe that even though the culture during this time period had an obstructed view of morality, I predict that Tom wouldn't have been able to get away with Jim's abuse. I believe that Aunt Sally or another character (if they knew), would have stepped in and stopped Tom's antics. I do not think the way Tom acted reflects the morals, per say, of a majority of people in this era, rather the "game" of a child. With that being said, I do think that the view of morality that most people had during this time, allowed them to have and control slaves without feeling guilty. Their view between right and wrong was obstructed. Rather than binding everyone as a culture under common ground, they split apart, alienating humans from each other based on skin color. One of Lackeys major points in his essay is that Huck ultimately has to make the choice between friendship and morality. If Huck wants to be moral, he can't free Jim, and if Huck want's to have a friendship with Jim, he will suffer a loss of morality. We witness Huck's inner turmoil throughout the novel, especially when Jim is talking about his family and how he's going to work his way to free them, and if that doesn't work, steal them. He does not say anything negative about his physical appearance. He does call him a "nigger," however that was socially acceptable at that time. In fact, Twain makes Jim a better, more caring father figure to Huck. Jim actually cares for Huck's well–being when he says, ""Goodness gracious, is dat you, Huck? ... Twain makes Jim the good guy and Pap the bad guy to show how African– Americans are not all bad and whites are not all good. He expresses through these two characters that blacks can actually be better people than whites, going against most beliefs back then. Next, when Jim escapes from Miss Watson and finds Huck, Huck is happy he has someone to pass time with. Forgetting about the moral standards of society he says, "I was ever so glad to see Jim. I warn't lonesome now...Then I says, 'It's good daylight. L'es get breakfast. Make up your campfire good'" (31). Again Twain used the relationship between Huck and Jim to show true caring. With so many diets out there to choose from, it can be difficult to figure out which will work best for your body's individual needs. Also, there are a lot of scam diet programs out there to watch out for. So, how do you know which diet to choose? How about losing weight without dieting at all? Sound impossible? This diet suggests aiming for higher protein and carbohydrate consumption on training days and, on rest days, still focusing on protein but, instead, consuming more fat than carbohydrate. 2. The Alternate–Day Diet This intermittent fasting protocol was developed by Dr. James Johnson. The idea is that food is consumed every other day. Considered by many, one the most influential American works of fiction ever published. Uncle Tom's Cabin contracts many different attitudes that Southerners as well as Northerners shared towards slavery. It shows the evils and cruelties of slavery and the cruelty, in particular how masters treat their slaves and how families are torn apart because of slavery. Mrs. Shelby, who lives according to the cult of domesticity, tries to teach her slaves how to raise a family and establish a home. Nonetheless, later in the novel her husband's business transactions destroy the emotions she has tried to instill in her slaves, her one chance at domesticity on the plantation. It is noted, by an unknown White Northern author, that prejudice between the white and black races, primarily the first, is a main theme of the book. Stowe infers that no matter how benighted or besotted their character, a slave will ultimately get to heaven. But at the same time Stowe is unable to look upon a white face without tracing in it something sinister and repulsive. An example of this can be seen as follows, "Some flowers of Eden they still inherit, but the trail of the serpent is over them all." (Stowe, 255) Stowe's novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, had a much more major impact on African Americans than any other group of Americans. Stowe convinced her readers that the institution of slavery itself was evil, because it supported people like Simon Legree and enslaved people like Uncle Tom. In Uncle Tom's Cabin, Simon Legree was the prime example of the group opposed to the idea of abolition. He was a Louisiana cotton–plantation owner that brutally beat his slaves, who in all situations did not deserve the beatings issued. Legree believed in working his slaves until death, ... Engineering : The Ideas And Aspects Of Engineering Students after finishing their study in high school tends to study engineering because they believe that their skills in science and mathematics are good enough to be an engineering student. Although it is a good chance to study engineering, students underestimate the work that is waiting for them. In addition, they underestimate the importance of communication, negotiation, and the amount of responsibility they have to make their own decisions in a company or in a society. To be an engineer, you must use your imagination first. You as an engineer, you are obliged to be the problem solver, you have to use your own skills and abilities to fix any design problem without referring to any other source like e–books. E–books are likely to give you some ideas on how you can fix the issue. In the future, students have to understand that engineering does not require only science and mathematics skills as it requires imagination and innovation. As an engineer, you have a lot of work and responsibilities that insure that your work is safe and can't damage the surrounding. In our world, population is increasing every year. Till this year, we have about seven billion people, all needing food, water, education, employment, and safe shelter. "When we say that something is original ... we are referring to the aspect of what can be called authenticity or genuineness, that which is unique not because it is necessarily different in topic or technique, but because it embodies one person's experience with deep particularity." This statement, made by the poet Jane Hirshfield, has provoked a reevaluation of my ideas of an authentic work of art, especially within the museum. Authenticity has some definite, and some more vague definitions. In the following paper, I plan to explore what aspects of the museum provide the visitor with an authentic experience, allowing them to access something authentic. Three institutions will be examined: Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library (Winterthur), the Barnes Foundation, and Philadelphia's Magic Gardens (PMG); each institution provides the visitor with a different type of experience, some more authentic than others. I would first like to start by examining Winterthur within the context of the article, "The Precession of Simulacra," by Jean Baudrillard. Baudrillard describes different levels and types of simulacra that exist, which I view as a sort of scale between simulation and hyperreality, where the real is something entirely separate. Authenticity falls within this model in the real. Winterthur exists in a state of hyperreality. • 65. Analysis Of Gustave Caillebotte 's Paris Street The general understanding of subjects in Impressionist paintings are often linked to a new representation of a newfound modernized society. Beyond modernization in the nineteenth century Impressionist paintings also discloses the newer economic and social state of that time: Capitalism. By the mid–1800s people were divided into various classes, the most popular being the upper class bourgeoisie and the working class proletariat. Industrialization increased the lust for commodities, which in turn overburdened the working class. The division between status and wealth induced strong social effects at the time, which resulted in a new sense of isolation. Gustave Caillebotte's Paris Street; Rainy Day begun production in 1876 and was finished early in 1877, showing a flaneur's–eye view of an ordinary slice of bourgeois life. The painting shared spotlight with Auguste Renoir's Ball at the Moulin de la Galette, and was first exhibited along with Le Pont de L'Europe and Claude Monet's series of the Saint–Lazare train station at the third Impressionist exhibition in 1877. • 69. Huck Finn Satire Essay Satire in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Many authors use satire to discuss issues in society that they have opinions on. These authors express their opinions by mocking the issues in a subtle way in their writing. Throughout The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain satirizes many societal elements. Three of these issues include the institution of slavery, organized religion, and education. By satirizing slavery and the prejudice placed against blacks in Huck's society, Twain takes a stance against these institutions. There are many situations throughout the novel that mock slavery in different ways. Miss Watson's telling Huck to "pray every day," (10) yet she owned a slave "named Jim" (4). Organized religion and society has taught Huck that turning Jim in is the right thing to do, but he cannot bring himself to do it. Huck realizes that everyone's life is important. Huck's life–changing realization represents Twain's own opinion on the issue of slavery. By mocking the issue of education, Twain's own ideas are incorporated into the novel. When Tom and Huck form a gang, Tom is chosen as the leader. Later in the novel, Jim gets captured by the Phelps family. While trying to break Jim out of his temporary jail, Tom claims that they must use "picks and shovels" and not "modern conveniences" because it will be more authentic to a real jail–break (243). • 73. Tom Sawyer Vs Huck Finn Analysis In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Huck), author Mark Twain exposes antebellum society ignorance and exploits the lack of education to his satirical advantage. Twain was adverse to slavery and used the aforementioned problem to comment on slavery in Huck. Twain uses satire on ignorance and the difference between book–smart and street–smart to show that slavery is morally wrong. Twain shows the difference between two characters, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, to illustrate his point. Tom Sawyer represents book–smarts and the educated, "civilized" general population, whereas Huckleberry Finn represents street–smarts and the uneducated, underbelly of the population that nonetheless provides a path to redemption in the southern society. Twain presents Tom Sawyer as a very illogical, dramatic, by–the–book character. Tom believes the stories and tales in book to be equal to the word of God himself. For Tom, everything has to happen exactly as it did in the books he has read or else it is incorrect: "Why, blame it all, we've got to do it. Don't I tell you it's in the books? Do you want to go to doing different from what's in the books, and get things all muddled up?" (Twain 19). This rigid belief of Tom's leads him to act in very illogical ways and gets him into trouble.
