Q1 digipack
1. Discuss how your products have
borrowed/developed/challenged conventions from existing
products and how you have used your research to help you
Digipak
Charlie Kowalik
3. Front cover
The image includes, image of the artist, album name, the artist
names and a spine which is a continuation of the image, all of these
features are common on all CD covers, I used these features to
create a more commercial product and is more identifiable as a
CD. A photo shoot was planned in order to capture an image of the
artist who would appear on the front of the digipak however, a
layer was created in photoshop and then segmented using the crop
tool cutting the image into pieces, the creative intention behind
this was to show the secret and abstract persona of the artist this is
reinforced as artist does not feature anywhere else on the printed
media products other than through cartoon outlines and only
appears shortly in the video. The creative way in which we have
designed our front cover, conveys the indie genre we were trying to
represent as it has directly borrowed designs from other indie CD’s
such as Floarine’s new wave tunes.
4. Front cover
We created a questionnaire using survey
monkey which enabled me to quickly send
digital copies of the survey to my target
audience, this helped us gain inspiration for the
front cover which would be appropriate for our
target audience. We looked at the imagery, text,
colours
Our research found, differently to the poster,
that an image if the artist was more desired than
artwork , this was a result of a questionnaire
where 70% agreed with this statement.
5. Inside cover
We struggled as to how we could use the inside cover
at first however, we then came up with the idea to
have a short message from the artist to all of his fans
(customer) this was written and placed over the iconic
cartoon face as on the poster, this link the two
products. Research was conducted to find if this was
desirable and we found that most people liked the
idea. The concept appealed to us as it was
unconventional and was something new and stylish
we could add. The background is blurred to create
depth and relates to the artist in the video nicely
linking all three media products together. The font we
chose appear handwritten which implies it is a
personal messsage.
6. CD
We stripped the CD right back to basics. The
complexity of the design and the other areas of the
digipak supply emotion and create a mood through
the imagery which we felt did not need to continue
on to the CD. This was a creative decision to
indicate that the contents of the CD were pure and
simple and represents the raw topics discussed
through by the artist, this is different to the rest of
the digipak which represents much more complex
issues and subjects much like the artist himself by
surrounding it with complex and abstract imagery.
The style of the CD was inspired completely by the
‘Night Visions’ album by Imagine Dragons
7. Back cover
The back cover is quite conventional as it follows a
similar vertical pattern as do most albums however, I
have added in some details to improve the appearance
and make it more genre appropriate, as to just leave it
untouched would give a plain minimalist look often
seen in pop music. The image used to create the
textured background is sample of the wall edited to fill
the space from the front cover, this helps reinforce the
house style and continue the flow of creativity
throughout the digipak. In addition the font used is
the same as that of the inside cover which continues
the idea of a personal touch suggesting the songs are
perhaps personal.
