1. In order to produce a digipak we will not only need an overall
understanding of digipak conventions, however we also need to
take inspiration from more specific album artwork within the
rock genre. Album artwork is the fulcrum upon which the design
of the overall product is based; it is one of the most important
features. We‟ve gathered together some existing album artwork
to create a mood board, which will hopefully influence the
design of our product.
2. Looking at a variety of digipaks as well as those above it's
plausible that the majority of "rock" artists exploit their name in
various places on the album cover assisted with images of all the
band members. The album covers also consist of “funky” designs
that are unique and extravagant.
At the top of the artwork and the album title at the bottom, over
or aside, between or aside an image of the artist. Most of the
artistis/bands still place their name at the top of the album or
use of an image of themselves to stand out, reinforcing the idea
that "star image" is key, helping audiences to associate a name to
a face and vise versa: a lot of sales rely purely on the artist's
name and reputation.
I will be creating a new brand identity for my artist and as such it
will be essential to include her name. She will not be well known
enough to do otherwise.
Interestingly, The Rolling Stones album does not include an image
of the band; it‟s an image with their name written above a toilet
in a public bathroom. Perhaps this is because, as a male band,
they are less focused on image than their female and solo
counterparts. The band does, however, like
to portray themselves as being quite unique and individual.
All album artworks, and thus respective digipaks, have very
carefully considered colour schemes in which elements
complement and contrast each other to emphasise certain
aspects and to create a more cohesive product. For example, in
kiss‟ album, they have bright, bold colours that are eye-catching.
The whole design is informal and „wild‟ which is also like the
music in the „rock‟ genre, moreover it adds a bit of visual
interest.
