NCAA Division I Initial-Eligibility
Academic Requirements
High School to 4 Year
University
Beginning for student athletes enrolling on or after
August 1, 2016
Changes
The minimum core GPA for full qualification
is now 2.30.
Ten core courses must be completed for full
qualification before the beginning of a
Prospective Student Athlete’s senior year.
The GPA-standardized test score sliding
scale has changed.
Three Scenarios
Full qualifier - competition, athletics aid and
practice the first year.
Academic redshirt - athletics aid the first
year and practice in the first regular
academic term.
Nonqualifier - no athletics aid, practice or
competition the first year.
Full Qualifier Requirements
Competition, Practice and Aid
16 core credits in the following
courses
4 English credits
3 Math credits beginning with
Algebra I
2 Social Science credits
2 Natural Science credits
1 additional English, Math or
Natural Science credit
4 additional credits from previous
content areas or foreign language,
comparative religion or philosophy
Minimum 2.30 core Grade Point
Average in 16 credits and equivalent
sliding scale proportion
Graduate High School
10 core credits must be
passed with 7 credits in the
following content areas
English, Math and Science
These courses are locked
in at the beginning of the
seven semester
After being locked in
they cannot be retaken
to improve the GPA
Academic Redshirts
Practice and Aid
Students who do not meet
core-course progression
requirements may still be
eligible to receive athletics
aid and practice in the initial
year of enrollment by meeting
academic redshirt
requirements.
After the first semester is
complete, in order to
continue to practice for the
rest of the year, the student
must be academically
successful at the collegiate
level.

Nonqualifier
If neither set of requirements for a full qualifier
or academic redshirt are met a student is
deemed a nonqualifier.
After a student is deemed a nonqualifier he/she
will not be able to compete, practice or receive
athletic aid.
New Sliding Scale
Standardized Test Notes
SAT- critical reading and math scores only
ACT- best scores from each subtest will be
added to create the composite score
When registering for the ACT or SAT use the
NCAA Eligibility Center code of 9999 to ensure
scores are reported directly to the Eligibility
Center from the testing agency. Test scores on
transcripts will not be used.

New Initial Eligibility Requirements

  • 1. NCAA Division I Initial-Eligibility Academic Requirements High School to 4 Year University Beginning for student athletes enrolling on or after August 1, 2016
  • 2. Changes The minimum core GPA for full qualification is now 2.30. Ten core courses must be completed for full qualification before the beginning of a Prospective Student Athlete’s senior year. The GPA-standardized test score sliding scale has changed.
