The Future of Work

Catherine Shinners, Simon Terry and Joachim Stroh from Change Agents Worldwide present a new story on the Future at Work at the FB Workplace event at Facebook HQ in Apr 2017.

Published in: Business
  • I know Change Agents Worldwide. The agents in the network are all practitioners with immense experience, notionally led by Harold Jarche, they produce content of the highest quality. However, this presentation is very much an aggregation of other people’s work, and that’s ok, but they should be given the attribution they deserve. For example, the idea that most of the intelligence in an organisation comes from the edge and the value of information velocity (or flow) comes from John Hagel, who’s been writing about this for at least 15 years. See: http://edgeperspectives.typepad.com/ I detect ideas drawn from John Seely Brown (who works for Deloitte’s Centre For the Edge think tank), Nonaka on tacit versus explicit knowledge, and Frederic Hayek’s seminal paper on the Pretense of Knowledge. Finally no one should talk about the future of work without covering the economic reality of freelance and gig work (I’ll spare you the stats). Thomas Malone gets it right with his vision of the future of work when he says: “Imagine organisations in which most workers aren’t employees at all, but electronically connected freelancers living wherever they want to. And imagine that all this freedom in business lets people get more of whatever they really want in life; money, interesting work, the chance to help others, or time with their families”. Although unlikely to occur in my lifetime, I believe in the future, there will be no jobs, no careers, no corporations, no institutions .... There will simply be things that need to be done ... And the right people coming together to make them happen. (Yours truly: the mouse with dreams that would terrify the cat)
