The Frank Talent of Aretha Louise Franklin Essay
Aretha Louise Franklin was born on March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee (bio 1). She was one of
five children born to Rev. Clarence L. Franklin and Barbara (Siggers) Franklin (Moritz 132). Aretha
was born into a very musical family. Her mother, Barbara, was a gospel singer and her sisters, Erma
and Carolyn, are both vocalists, too (Glickman 1, Moritz 132). Her brothers took a different,
unmusical approach to their lives. Her brother, Cecil, is the Assistant Pastor at his father's church
and her other brother, Vaughn, is a career man in the United States (Moritz 132). When Aretha was
two years old her father took her, and the rest of his family, North (Moritz 132). Five years after they
moved, they settled in Detroit, Michigan ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Touring with her father gave her important performing experiences, but it was also a very tough time
for her (Moritz 132). Her brother told a Time Magazine interviewer: "Driving eight or ten hours
trying to make a gig, and being hungry and passing restaurants all along the road, and having to go
off the highway into some little city to find a place to eat because you're black– that had its effect"
(Moritz 132). Everyone knew Aretha was incredibly talented at a very young age. At twelve years
old, Aretha cut her first record on her first solo for Chess Records. After that she went on tour with
her father. In 1960, Aretha came to New York and took dancing and vocal lessons (Moritz 132). She
signed a five–year contract with Columbia Records one year later in 1961 (Moritz 132). While at
Columbia Records, she recorded nine long–playing albums, only selling moderately (Moritz 132).
Toward the end of 1966 Aretha turned down an offered renewed contract by Columbia, signing with
Atlantic Records instead (Moritz 133). Aretha had "a reputation of being difficult to handle" in the
early part of her career according to Phyl Garland of Ebony in 1967 (Moritz 133–134). She caused a
small riot when she walked out of a concert in Denver because she was only paid half of what she
was promised (Moritz 134). Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, made beautiful, soulful music over
the years. She recorded her first single, "I Never Loved a Man,"

How Did Julie Andrews Impact The Music Community
Julie Andrews has left her mark on a myriad of awards, titles, roles, styles, and even beloved
characters we all know and love with her natural grace and elegance. She has also experienced one
of the most fruitful, illustrious careers of all time. But even more significantly, Andrews has
impacted the music community by bringing a new air of elegance to the stage, raising the bar of
vocal ability standards internationally, and expressing the beauty of music through her impeccable,
crystalline voice. Born on October 1st, 1935, to Barbara Ward Wells (a pianist) and Edward Charles
(Ted) Wells in Walton–On–Thames, Surrey, England. Barbara and Ted divorced soon after the
outbreak of World War II, and Barbara was remarried to Ted Andrews, who would make an essential
and insurmountable impact on young Andrew's life. Back when the now seventy–nine–year old
performer was only eight, her stepfather decided to get her singing lessons. Her teacher Lillian
Stiles–Allen was hired promptly and began instructing young Andrews in operatic techniques. No
sooner did they start training did they discover Andrews possessed a freakish four–octave voice, and
an exceptionally advanced vocal talent and "crystalline" tone quality for an eight year old girl.
Stiles–Allen states Andrews "possessed the rare gift of absolute pitch," and even wrote a ... Show

In Andrew's story, it struck in the worst place it possibly could: her voice. She began developing
ovules on her larynx, and her singing became strained and painful. She sought treatment from
surgery to remove said ovules, but an error was made during the procedure, irreparably damaging
her vocal chords forever. Andrews was devastated. Her singing career was over, after near half a
century of a strong, fruitful run in the show life. But she didn't let her new setback take her down.
She sued the doctor and received more than 30 million dollars as her

Why Is Whitney Houston A Tragic Hero
A tragic hero is an influential character who experienced a privileged life, partook in a rise to fame
or fortune, then declined due to a flaw in personality or life decision. Whitney Houston was a one–
of–a–kind singer who stole hearts across America. She is a perfect example of a tragic hero, due to
her amazing vocal talent, influential role in teaching America that everyone has flaws and
embracing individuality is the key to success, and her ultimate decline in health and fame due to
alcoholism, drug abuse, and poor marital decisions. Whitney Houston grew up in humble
beginnings, with fame on her side, helping her to become the modern–day tragic hero that the public
knows. According to Biography, "Born on August 9, 1963 in Newark, New ... Show more content on

Finally, Whitney had personal and decisive flaws, including a lack of self esteem concerning her
personal character and a poor spouse choice, which ultimately lead Whitney to experience a
downfall that included alcoholism, drug abuse, and, eventually, death. America was left void of their

Trifles By Susan Glaspell Analysis
Music is a short poem or other set of words set to music or meant to be sung. Music can also be
interpreted in so many ways which is why it is a symbolic thing. When I read the play "Trifles"
written by Susan Glaspell, many songs came into my head in relation to the play. There are many
songs I believe that can relate to this story because there is so much emotion involved. Minnie
Foster is whom the story is actually based around, even though she's not in any of the scenes. She
was a happy outgoing person who loved to sing, dress nice, and be around people in general, but
once she married her freedom was taken from her. Her husband did not show her affection and he
didn't even want to have kids, so she was extremely lonely. She did have a pet bird that she felt a
deep connection with because she too felt caged and wanted to be free. In this essay I will be talking
about some songs that I felt represents the lack of women respect during that time period, as well as
focusing on Minnie as a person prior to her marriage and her relationship with her husband.
During the 1900's men were considered the head of the house, even today that still applies, however
back in that time period there was little to no respect for women. In the play, we can clearly indicate
that the two women; Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters were constantly disrespected by the attorney. "Dirty
towels! (kicks his foot against the pans under the sink) Not much of a housekeeper, would you say,
ladies?" (Glaspell 136).

I chose to write about "Respect" song which was released and recording by Otis Redding in 1965.
And in
1967 it became a great song by a Aretha Franklin singer. Otis Redding wrote this song and recorded
it in
1965. Aretha Franklin rewrote it in 1967 and at that time, it became one of the best song in the
world.
Otis Redding was born on September 9, 1941 in Dawson, Ga., he was classic of soul music.
He was posthumously inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Rock & Roll
Hall of

Do the performers' backgrounds impact your experience of the different versions?
The singer loves his wife but he wants to get respect from her. I have a sister and I love her very
much, give her some presents sometimes, and I want to get more respect from her, and my parents
love me very much give me all what I need, and they want to get respect from me, and I try to give
it to them. Actually you should try to give respect to everybody in this world to feel yourself alright.
7. Which version do you prefer? Why? What does this tell us about your musical tastes?
I prefer version by Franklin because she singed it in style which I like to listen .I like jazz music and
this one is exactly jazz. I don't enjoy to listen Redding's version, but I think somebody prefer to
listen version by him because it is original, and most people prefer original version to other, but it is
not my case.
What I learned about this song?
I learned that you should give respects to everybody if you want to get something from them, and
everything what you will do to anybody, everything will return back to you. So you should respect
everybody that way, as you want them to respect yourself. Anyway both songs are perfect, and it

Beneatha's Song In A Raisin In The Sun By Lorraine Hansberry
Beneatha's Song
Hardships and trials help to shape, mold, and create characters in stories, this is evident within the
play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. Hansberry's assertive character, Beneatha, connects
to the messages from classic Motown songs of the time period such as: inequality, identity, and
respect. These songs sing of some characteristics and problems Beneatha holds.
Through the soulful sound of Nina Simone's song, "Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free", a
cry for equality is heard that is similar to the one from Beneatha in A Raisin in the Sun. Hansberry's
play is set in the 1950s and incorporates the social issues prevalent with in the time such as gender
roles which helps to create an underlying theme that Beneatha ... Show more content on

From this snippet of her song she makes known about how she has what it takes to make it in this
world and is worthy of respect so because of this she should receive it. What can also be inferred
from this song is that the audience Franklin is singing out to is not giving it to her properly. This
'loud' behavior and this plight is seen throughout A Raisin in the Sun as Beneatha tries to make her
family and her love interests understand these messages from "Respect". Throughout this story
Beneatha's brother Walter and her fight as she tries to stand up for herself and her beliefs as seen in
the following exchange:
BENEATHA. I have never asked anyone around here to do anything for me!... What do you want
from me, Brother...

The Black Arts Movement And The Civil Rights Movement
The twentieth century was one of the most active periods of social movements, along with the Civil
Rights campaigns of the 1960s was the Antiwar Movement, where most Americans were in
opposition with the government on the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war. Domestically, social
and economic conditions gave voice to the people to embark on a revolution for change. For African
Americans the struggle for equality had been going on for decades. But the movement went to a new
level after the death of Emmitt Till in August 1955, a 14–year–old black boy murdered and
disfigured by white men in Mississippi for allegedly flirting with a white woman, and the arrest of
Rosa Parks December 1955, who refused to give up her seat in the colored section of the bus to a
white passenger. The beginning of the Feminist Movement in 1963 women began to fight for respect
and equality socially and economically. The Black Arts Movement which was the cultural wing of
the Black Power Movement began to play out on college campuses. The 1970s remained tied to the
social experiments and struggles of the 1960s. African Americans were still fighting for education
equality around the country. But signs emerged of another change. January 23, 1973 President
Richard Nixon announces the end of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war. The Civil Rights
Movement and the Women's Movement accomplished many of their goals. The U.S. suffered an
economic recession, interest rates and inflation were high. Music

The Accomplishments Of Whitney Houston
Whitney Houston: From Success to Struggles "As I lay me down, heaven hear me now. I'm lost
without a cause, after giving it my all. Winter storms have come, and darkened my sun. After all that
I've been through, who on earth can I turn to? I look to you." This is a quote from the song "I Look
to You" by Whitney Houston. This song came out right after Houston got out of rehab, making it
seem like it was her recovery song and the way she told the world she was back in the entertainment
world (Oprah Winfrey Show, 2009). In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Houston told her about the
new song and album. She said, "That makes it real. The changes that we go through, being a mother,
becoming a single mother. It all has its ups and downs, but for the most part, I kept my faith and I
kept my head up...I took my time." She later added, "All the triumphs and the ups and downs and
stuff, it's all incorporated on the album, and hopefully not only it inspires me, but it inspires a whole
lot of other people." Whitney Houston was an American singer, actress, and model. She was the
most awarded African American singer and actress of all time (Finkelman, 2009). Houston was also
one of pop music's best–selling music artists of all time, and she estimated selling around 170–200

Demanding Rights from the Beginning: Franklin and Caillat Fight for Respect
We hear all the time that we learn from our past, but is that true? Inequalities have been around for
thousands of years; we are still surrounded by prejudice and differences every day. So do we truly
learn from our past? Women's rights and women's equality issues have been around for a long time
because of the need for respect, equality and voting rights. Two songs relating these issues include
"Respect" by Aretha Franklin (1967) and "Try" by Colbie Caillat (2014). "Respect" was originally
written by Otis Redding (1965), but the reason I chose the Aretha Franklin version (1967) was to use
her voice and her style of music to set and relay the theme of women 's rights. "Try" is a Colbie
Caillat (2014) original which is about being yourself no matter what society thinks of you. Most
women obsess over their image because of how society has shaped us to think that we, as women,
should wear makeup and conform to society. Society has lowered women's confidence levels
because "social norms" consist of women wearing makeup, curling or straightening our hair, or
painting our nails. When we conform to the "social norms" we are lowering our confidence because
we feel as if we cannot go out in public without "making ourselves up". Both songs speak about the
same issue of women's rights; they also have the same tone of being respected, being worthy, and
being confident.
Some people think that respect is a value

Biography of Whitney Houston
Whitney Houston is considered as one of the greatest singers of our generation. According to the
Guinness Book of World Records, she holds the record of being the most rewarded female artist of
all time. I chose her as my topic, because she represents resiliency and tenacity, despite her troubled
experiences with drugs and her personal life. Whitney Houston comes from a family with an
amazing, musical pedigree; her mother, Cissy Houston, was a successful back–up singer for Aretha
Franklin and Elvis Presley. Dionne Warwick is her first cousin and Aretha Franklin is her
godmother. In 1983, Houston was signed to Arista Records and music executive, Clive Davis,
became her mentor and helped launch her successful career. Whitney Houston was ... Show more

If an individual wants to be in the entertainment industry, one must know who they are and to
develop a tough exterior, in order to overcome adversity and negativity. It is evident that Whitney
was a people–pleaser and if she did not please everybody, then it would take a toll on her and as a
result, provided her with a lot of distress and pain. For this reason, possibly drew her into a realm of
drugs and chaos. Psychosocial development was created by Erik Erikson, in which, mentions that
personality is developed in a series of stages, throughout an individual's lifespan. In particular, the
Identity versus Role Confusion was a very profound stage to discuss, in regards to Whitney
Houston's life. Even though, she sold millions of records and won many awards, Whitney still felt
empty in her personal life. In turn, she turned to drugs, as a means of support and to ease the pain of
her emptiness. She mentioned in an interview with Oprah: "I spent my life making records and
touring the world in my 20's and 30's...I totally forgot about singing, I was focused on finding my
young womanhood." (Winfrey, interview, 2009). In the beginning of her career, Whitney was too
busy promoting herself and getting her out there to music executives, in order to start her career.
Clive chose all of the songs for her to sing and her mother picked the clothes that she would wear on
stage. This poses a problem, because Whitney did not have the

Profit Dale is the most pompous person I ever met. He exaggerates everything he does to make him
seem like this great person. Don't get me wrong he literally has the I.Q. of 160+, which is the
equivalent of Einstein. The problem is not that he has it. It is that he lets everyone know. Profit Dale
is what we call genius with no common sense. He walked through poison ivy. As soon as he found
out that's what it was, he called everyone in the family and asked them if they were allergic to it also
(everyone's allergic to poison ivy!). Another example of his no common sense is from a phone call a

because heaven forbid someone misses a call from him.

Black Women in Music Essay examples
Black Women in Music
Music is a reflection of the community from which it came. African American women have been
reflecting the social, economic, and political experiences of the African American community
through thier music past and present. Each era of change in the African American community has
brought about a African American female revoluntionary. Examples of this can be seen through the
blues and jazz singers of the Harlem Renaissance, soul singers of the civil rights movement, and the
Ryhem and Blues, Hip Hop vocalist of the present day. In the early 1900's, America was a place of
racial division and inequality. The early

Respect In The Community : The Role Of Respect In A Community
"R–E–S–P–E–C–T", belted Aretha Franklin, as she poured her voice out in an era where nobody
else was brave enough to do so. She didn't quite know it yet, but those iconic lyrics would later
become the power anthems of the womens' and civil rights movements. In a time where battles had
been commenced, there was an underlying desire between all these different people: the desire for
respect. Whether it be a soldier on the battlefield, or a woman patiently waiting at home, this song
signified just how much "respect" evolved from an individual's battle cry––––to a whole nation's
collective sound. As the meaning of respect has progressed over the years, so has the need for
individuals to practice this idea of good behavior. On an individual level, the constant strive for
acknowledgement and self respect inhibits the role of a catalyst. When examining the role of respect
in a community, we see that for such a diverse group of people to thrive, mutual respect for one
another is necessary. We come to find that without the presence of respect, all the components in a
community began to clash and dissolve. It is often said that everyone has a moral code, a sense of
right and wrong that dictates their thoughts and actions. Our moral code is, after all, what
differentiates us from the wild animals that just coexist. It is after all. the core of our identity, the
little voice that whispers, "You are human". When a successful CEO walks into the meeting room,

Betrayal In Hero Of War
I have read four texts about soldiers being betrayed or sold a fake reality. Those texts are Hero of
War by Rise Against, Dulce Et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen, Rambo by Ted Ketoheff and War
Pigs by Black sabboth. In the film Rambo. The main character was betrayed by his country, Once he
got back from war for serving his country he was treated like scum. An example of this is when he
was getting sprayed with the fire hose, spat on and abused by citizens of the country he had served
for. My evidence for this is at the end of the movie when Rambo says to the army general
"protesting me, spitting, calling me baby killer and all kinds of vile crap". The director put that in
the film to show that even if you served for your country you can come ... Show more content on

Both the characters were betrayed and sold a fake reality by their generals and recruiters. An
example of this in Hero of War is when it says "He said son, have you seen the world? Well what
would you say if I said you could? Just carry this gun you'll even get paid". In War Pigs it says "
death and hatred to mankind, poisoning their brainwashed minds". In both those examples the song
tells you how they are sold a fake reality and betrayed. My evidence for this is when he says "we
took him away, a bag over his face from his family and his friends, they took of his clothes, they
pissed in his hands, I told them to stop, but then I joined in". This is showing how when he went to
war he was told it will be fun but when reality hit him and he realised he was breaking up family's.
And what the recruiters said to him was a lie. Same as War Pigs when it says "Evil minds that plot
destruction, sorcerer of death's construction, in the field bodies burning, as the war machine keeps
turning". The same as the last piece of evidence he was brainwashed into think war was good but
when they got there and saw everyone dying but that didn't stop the war. In the text. In the text War
Pigs the author wants you to think about what the government tells everyday citizens fake
information to get them into their army. In Hero of War the author wants you to think about how the
army sells you a fake reality and tells you more false from true. It tells you all the behind the scenes
information that only soldiers

The Importance Of Competency Skills For Counseling
When I first stated I was interested in counseling, I thought all I had to do was sit in a chair and

1) Be nonjudgmental; 2) be flexible; 3) be resourceful; 4) personal observations; 5) pay attention to

My family teases me with the nickname of "google master", because if there is a need, they know I

highest ranked competencies, being flexible would be another one to mention. I go over and above

see how accommodating I was to others, almost to the stage of being used. I made sure if my phone

Examples Of Rapport And Empathy
Angelica Lai – Discussion #2: Empathy and Rapport Building rapport and empathy with clients is
extremely important no matter what the job is. As mentioned throughout this module, empathy and
rapport fuel the relationship between people. My previous work experience includes working at a
movie theatre and hospital security. Both jobs required rapport and empathy as these jobs required
serving the public. However, even though the jobs itself were different, both had the same
underlying task, which is working with people. Working at the movie theatre, it is directed to more
of a customer service job, where often the guests get upset over issues we as the employee do not

I found if I focus on the interpersonal aspect of the relationship, I can build and maintain positive
working relationships. However, this is not the only skills that are important. It is important to
showcase characteristics, or attributes like trust, respect, humour, and integrity. After reading the
content in Module 2, I have seen skills I use, but also new skills I am going to incorporate. One
suggestions I am going to incorporate is the acronym E.M.P.A.T.H.Y. from the Ted Talk by Helen
Riess (2013). The reason being that, this is an easy acronym to remember and apply when building
both rapport and empathy. I will need to practice this for a while, but as soon as I get it right, it will
be an easy guideline to help build that connection with others. Another skill, which was explained in
this module was the power of powerless communication from the Ted Talk by Adam Grant (2013).
In a security position it is often explained to talk with assertiveness, but sometimes this backfires as
the client becomes more aggressive. By applying the concepts of tentative talking, it may help build
that rapport and empathy as it shows a more humanistic side. I think it is important that we show our
humanistic side, as many individuals just see the uniform and not the person wearing it. By applying
these skills, I

The Life of Aretha Louise Franklin
Aretha Louise Franklin also known as the Queen of Soul was born on March 25, 1942 in Memphis

Amazing Grace Summary
Amazing Grace, the third live music album of Aretha Franklin, was released by the Atlantic Records
in 1972. Twenty years later, the RIAA certified it double platinum and this album went on the to
become the best–selling live gospel music album of all time. With Rev. James Cleveland as the
leader of the choir and a highly accomplished rhythm section band, Amazing Grace is widely
acknowledged to have revitalized the gospel genre. Beyond the immediate musical impact, the
social impact could be felt then and for future generations as Franklin, by going back to her more
traditional roots, emphasized change, respect, and most importantly African American pride.
Hence it came as no surprise when the 33 ⅓ series of books, a series evaluating the most influential
albums of all time, announced an installment on Amazing Grace. Few would have been more suited
to write this book than Aaron Cohen, a man with expertise in jazz, r&b, and gospel, all three of
whose influences can be seen on Amazing Grace. Cohen's passion and knowledge for gospel, and
particularly for this album can be seen in this book as he tracks down nearly everyone alive involved
in the making of the album. He maintains a specific style throughout the book. Cohen provides
numerous interviews, historical records, and various songs throughout the text, and based off of
these accounts, he offers his own musical and sociological analyses, often providing a fresh
perspective on Aretha's background and into the makings of Amazing Grace.
Cohen makes his style clear right from the first chapter. He offers a fascinating take on Aretha's
transition from gospel to pop, and back to gospel. The popular media narrative was that Aretha
began singing gospel in her childhood under the influence of her father, a famous preacher. She then
transferred to pop and jazz, and after struggling and achieving little success, switched to r&b under
the guidance of a street–smart producer (Jerry Wexler), before becoming the queen of soul. But
Cohen's perspective was that Aretha Franklin began in the church and never left (6). She always
accompanied her father on the gospel circuit. Alexander Hamilton, one of the leaders of the choir for
Amazing Grace, in his interview with Cohen,

Aretha Franklin Analysis
Aretha Franklin – Respect
This song written and originally released artist Otis Redding in 1965. It wasn't until 1967 that this
song became a hit when R&B Aretha Franklin sang it. The song itself has the perfect features of a
pop song and more importantly is was a song that was perfect for a political movement theme. One
of the most important messages that is being delivered is that a black and strong woman was seeking
respect: "All I'm askin' Is for a little respect when you get home (just a little bit)". Additionally,
Aretha Franklin was showing her power towards men: "What you want, Baby, I got it".
The initial intent of the lyrics showed a bad dynamic between a relationship, but Aretha Franklin

inspiration for the feminist movement.
Christina Aguilera – Can't Hold Us Down
Christina Aguilera released the song "Can't Hold Us Down" in 2003. The main idea of the song is to

She grew up in an environment where music was always present in her life. At the age of four, she

Franklin and Barbara (Siggers) Franklin (Moritz 132). Aretha was born into a very musical family. Her mother, Barbara, was a gospel singer and her sisters, Erma and Carolyn, are both vocalists, too (Glickman 1, Moritz 132). Her brothers took a different, unmusical approach to their lives. Her brother, Cecil, is the Assistant Pastor at his father's church and her other brother, Vaughn, is a career man in the United States (Moritz 132). Her brother told a Time Magazine interviewer: "Driving eight or ten hours trying to make a gig, and being hungry and passing restaurants all along the road, and having to go off the highway into some little city to find a place to eat because you're black– that had its effect" (Moritz 132). Everyone knew Aretha was incredibly talented at a very young age. At twelve years old, Aretha cut her first record on her first solo for Chess Records. After that she went on tour with her father. In 1960, Aretha came to New York and took dancing and vocal lessons (Moritz 132). She signed a five–year contract with Columbia Records one year later in 1961 (Moritz 132). While at Columbia Records, she recorded nine long–playing albums, only selling moderately (Moritz 132). Toward the end of 1966 Aretha turned down an offered renewed contract by Columbia, signing with Atlantic Records instead (Moritz 133). Aretha had "a reputation of being difficult to handle" in the early part of her career according to Phyl Garland of Ebony in 1967 (Moritz 133–134). She caused a small riot when she walked out of a concert in Denver because she was only paid half of what she was promised (Moritz 134). How Did Julie Andrews Impact The Music Community Julie Andrews has left her mark on a myriad of awards, titles, roles, styles, and even beloved characters we all know and love with her natural grace and elegance. She has also experienced one of the most fruitful, illustrious careers of all time. But even more significantly, Andrews has impacted the music community by bringing a new air of elegance to the stage, raising the bar of vocal ability standards internationally, and expressing the beauty of music through her impeccable, crystalline voice. Born on October 1st, 1935, to Barbara Ward Wells (a pianist) and Edward Charles (Ted) Wells in Walton–On–Thames, Surrey, England. Barbara and Ted divorced soon after the outbreak of World War II, and Barbara was remarried to Ted Andrews, who would make an essential and insurmountable impact on young Andrew's life. Back when the now seventy–nine–year old performer was only eight, her stepfather decided to get her singing lessons. Her teacher Lillian Stiles–Allen was hired promptly and began instructing young Andrews in operatic techniques. No sooner did they start training did they discover Andrews possessed a freakish four–octave voice, and an exceptionally advanced vocal talent and "crystalline" tone quality for an eight year old girl. Stiles–Allen states Andrews "possessed the rare gift of absolute pitch," and even wrote a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Her singing career was over, after near half a century of a strong, fruitful run in the show life. But she didn't let her new setback take her down. • 11. Trifles By Susan Glaspell Analysis Music is a short poem or other set of words set to music or meant to be sung. Music can also be interpreted in so many ways which is why it is a symbolic thing. When I read the play "Trifles" written by Susan Glaspell, many songs came into my head in relation to the play. There are many songs I believe that can relate to this story because there is so much emotion involved. Minnie Foster is whom the story is actually based around, even though she's not in any of the scenes. She was a happy outgoing person who loved to sing, dress nice, and be around people in general, but once she married her freedom was taken from her. Her husband did not show her affection and he didn't even want to have kids, so she was extremely lonely. She did have a pet bird that she felt a deep connection with because she too felt caged and wanted to be free. In this essay I will be talking about some songs that I felt represents the lack of women respect during that time period, as well as focusing on Minnie as a person prior to her marriage and her relationship with her husband. During the 1900's men were considered the head of the house, even today that still applies, however back in that time period there was little to no respect for women. In the play, we can clearly indicate that the two women; Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters were constantly disrespected by the attorney. "Dirty towels! (kicks his foot against the pans under the sink) Not much of a housekeeper, would you say, ladies?" (Glaspell 136). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Beneatha's Song In A Raisin In The Sun By Lorraine Hansberry Beneatha's Song Hardships and trials help to shape, mold, and create characters in stories, this is evident within the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. Hansberry's assertive character, Beneatha, connects to the messages from classic Motown songs of the time period such as: inequality, identity, and respect. These songs sing of some characteristics and problems Beneatha holds. Through the soulful sound of Nina Simone's song, "Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free", a cry for equality is heard that is similar to the one from Beneatha in A Raisin in the Sun. Hansberry's play is set in the 1950s and incorporates the social issues prevalent with in the time such as gender roles which helps to create an underlying theme that Beneatha ... This 'loud' behavior and this plight is seen throughout A Raisin in the Sun as Beneatha tries to make her family and her love interests understand these messages from "Respect". • 23. The Black Arts Movement And The Civil Rights Movement The twentieth century was one of the most active periods of social movements, along with the Civil Rights campaigns of the 1960s was the Antiwar Movement, where most Americans were in opposition with the government on the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war. Domestically, social and economic conditions gave voice to the people to embark on a revolution for change. For African Americans the struggle for equality had been going on for decades. But the movement went to a new level after the death of Emmitt Till in August 1955, a 14–year–old black boy murdered and disfigured by white men in Mississippi for allegedly flirting with a white woman, and the arrest of Rosa Parks December 1955, who refused to give up her seat in the colored section of the bus to a white passenger. The beginning of the Feminist Movement in 1963 women began to fight for respect and equality socially and economically. The Black Arts Movement which was the cultural wing of the Black Power Movement began to play out on college campuses. The 1970s remained tied to the social experiments and struggles of the 1960s. African Americans were still fighting for education equality around the country. But signs emerged of another change. January 23, 1973 President Richard Nixon announces the end of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war. The Civil Rights Movement and the Women's Movement accomplished many of their goals. She was very upset crying hard it was afterschool I went to comfort her and took her aside listened to her issues and comforted her. The next day she sent me an email thanking me for trying to make her feel better even though she was being very unpleasant towards me in tutorial. Demanding Rights from the Beginning: Franklin and Caillat Fight for Respect We hear all the time that we learn from our past, but is that true? Inequalities have been around for thousands of years; we are still surrounded by prejudice and differences every day. So do we truly learn from our past? Women's rights and women's equality issues have been around for a long time because of the need for respect, equality and voting rights. Two songs relating these issues include "Respect" by Aretha Franklin (1967) and "Try" by Colbie Caillat (2014). "Respect" was originally written by Otis Redding (1965), but the reason I chose the Aretha Franklin version (1967) was to use her voice and her style of music to set and relay the theme of women 's rights. "Try" is a Colbie Caillat (2014) original which is about being yourself no matter what society thinks of you. Most women obsess over their image because of how society has shaped us to think that we, as women, should wear makeup and conform to society. Society has lowered women's confidence levels because "social norms" consist of women wearing makeup, curling or straightening our hair, or painting our nails. When we conform to the "social norms" we are lowering our confidence because we feel as if we cannot go out in public without "making ourselves up". Both songs speak about the same issue of women's rights; they also have the same tone of being respected, being worthy, and being confident. Some people think that respect is a value ... She didn't quite know it yet, but those iconic lyrics would later become the power anthems of the womens' and civil rights movements. In a time where battles had been commenced, there was an underlying desire between all these different people: the desire for respect. Whether it be a soldier on the battlefield, or a woman patiently waiting at home, this song signified just how much "respect" evolved from an individual's battle cry––––to a whole nation's collective sound. As the meaning of respect has progressed over the years, so has the need for individuals to practice this idea of good behavior. On an individual level, the constant strive for acknowledgement and self respect inhibits the role of a catalyst. When examining the role of respect in a community, we see that for such a diverse group of people to thrive, mutual respect for one another is necessary. We come to find that without the presence of respect, all the components in a community began to clash and dissolve. It is often said that everyone has a moral code, a sense of right and wrong that dictates their thoughts and actions. An example of this is when he was getting sprayed with the fire hose, spat on and abused by citizens of the country he had served for. My evidence for this is at the end of the movie when Rambo says to the army general "protesting me, spitting, calling me baby killer and all kinds of vile crap". Both the characters were betrayed and sold a fake reality by their generals and recruiters. An example of this in Hero of War is when it says "He said son, have you seen the world? Well what would you say if I said you could? Just carry this gun you'll even get paid". In War Pigs it says " death and hatred to mankind, poisoning their brainwashed minds". In both those examples the song tells you how they are sold a fake reality and betrayed. My evidence for this is when he says "we took him away, a bag over his face from his family and his friends, they took of his clothes, they pissed in his hands, I told them to stop, but then I joined in". This is showing how when he went to war he was told it will be fun but when reality hit him and he realised he was breaking up family's. And what the recruiters said to him was a lie. Same as War Pigs when it says "Evil minds that plot destruction, sorcerer of death's construction, in the field bodies burning, as the war machine keeps turning". The same as the last piece of evidence he was brainwashed into think war was good but when they got there and saw everyone dying but that didn't stop the war. In the text. In the text War Pigs the author wants you to think about what the government tells everyday citizens fake information to get them into their army. In Hero of War the author wants you to think about how the army sells you a fake reality and tells you more false from true. It tells you all the behind the scenes information that only soldiers ... I have learned there is a lot more to counseling than just sitting there and listening, you must learn to use competency skills as well. I was fortunate enough to be educated on how to use the internet to find resources of any kind, so for me being resourceful is another area that I feel I would rate very high. My family teases me with the nickname of "google master", because if there is a need, they know I can locate it without a doubt. I listed more than 3 because it was hard to leave them out, but of the highest ranked competencies, being flexible would be another one to mention. I go over and above to accommodate others. I always make sure those in need can be accommodated. I am a true care giver and I take that to heart. Now that my life has gone through a transitional stage, I look back and see how accommodating I was to others, almost to the stage of being used. I made sure if my phone rung, I answered. If they needed me to watch the kids, I was available. My vocabulary did not include "no" unless you offered me brussel sprouts. As mentioned throughout this module, empathy and rapport fuel the relationship between people. My previous work experience includes working at a movie theatre and hospital security. Both jobs required rapport and empathy as these jobs required serving the public. However, even though the jobs itself were different, both had the same underlying task, which is working with people. Working at the movie theatre, it is directed to more of a customer service job, where often the guests get upset over issues we as the employee do not understand. It is important to showcase characteristics, or attributes like trust, respect, humour, and integrity. After reading the content in Module 2, I have seen skills I use, but also new skills I am going to incorporate. One suggestions I am going to incorporate is the acronym E.M.P.A.T.H.Y. from the Ted Talk by Helen Riess (2013). The reason being that, this is an easy acronym to remember and apply when building both rapport and empathy. I will need to practice this for a while, but as soon as I get it right, it will be an easy guideline to help build that connection with others. Another skill, which was explained in this module was the power of powerless communication from the Ted Talk by Adam Grant (2013). In a security position it is often explained to talk with assertiveness, but sometimes this backfires as the client becomes more aggressive. By applying the concepts of tentative talking, it may help build that rapport and empathy as it shows a more humanistic side. I think it is important that we show our humanistic side, as many individuals just see the uniform and not the person wearing it. By applying these skills, I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Amazing Grace Summary Amazing Grace, the third live music album of Aretha Franklin, was released by the Atlantic Records in 1972. Twenty years later, the RIAA certified it double platinum and this album went on the to become the best–selling live gospel music album of all time. With Rev. James Cleveland as the leader of the choir and a highly accomplished rhythm section band, Amazing Grace is widely acknowledged to have revitalized the gospel genre. Beyond the immediate musical impact, the social impact could be felt then and for future generations as Franklin, by going back to her more traditional roots, emphasized change, respect, and most importantly African American pride. Hence it came as no surprise when the 33 ⅓ series of books, a series evaluating the most influential albums of all time, announced an installment on Amazing Grace. Few would have been more suited to write this book than Aaron Cohen, a man with expertise in jazz, r&b, and gospel, all three of whose influences can be seen on Amazing Grace. Cohen's passion and knowledge for gospel, and particularly for this album can be seen in this book as he tracks down nearly everyone alive involved in the making of the album. He maintains a specific style throughout the book. Cohen provides numerous interviews, historical records, and various songs throughout the text, and based off of these accounts, he offers his own musical and sociological analyses, often providing a fresh perspective on Aretha's background and into the makings of Amazing Grace. Cohen makes his style clear right from the first chapter. He offers a fascinating take on Aretha's transition from gospel to pop, and back to gospel. The popular media narrative was that Aretha began singing gospel in her childhood under the influence of her father, a famous preacher. She then transferred to pop and jazz, and after struggling and achieving little success, switched to r&b under the guidance of a street–smart producer (Jerry Wexler), before becoming the queen of soul. But Cohen's perspective was that Aretha Franklin began in the church and never left (6). She always accompanied her father on the gospel circuit. It wasn't until 1967 that this song became a hit when R&B Aretha Franklin sang it. The song itself has the perfect features of a pop song and more importantly is was a song that was perfect for a political movement theme. One of the most important messages that is being delivered is that a black and strong woman was seeking respect: "All I'm askin' Is for a little respect when you get home (just a little bit)". Additionally, Aretha Franklin was showing her power towards men: "What you want, Baby, I got it". The initial intent of the lyrics showed a bad dynamic between a relationship, but Aretha Franklin tweak and the emphasis on the word RESPECT sang by the chorus led for the initiation and was an inspiration for the feminist movement. Christina Aguilera – Can't Hold Us Down Christina Aguilera released the song "Can't Hold Us Down" in 2003. The main idea of the song is to criticize the gender–related double standards. While going through lyrics, Aguilera talks about the double standard of women being expected to be home and not talk while men could say anything they want: "So what am I not supposed to have an opinion / Should I be quiet just because I'm a woman / Call me a b***h cos I speak what's on my mind / I guess it's easier for you to swallow if I sat and smiled.".
