Stick your diagram in
the middle of your
page. You will use the
mind map on the
bottom of page 18 to
annotate your
diagram and explain
why each of those
features is there.
The scenery in volcanic areas
is often very beautiful,
attracting tourists and
creating jobs.

Annotate the other
half of your
diagram to explain
the formation of
the hazards shown,
together with facts
and statistics.
Pyroclastic flow is a fast-
moving current of hot gas and
volcanic that moves away
from a volcano about 100
km/h. Can reach up to
1,000 °C

GCSE Style Question
Why Are People Risking it?
LO: To explain the reasons why people continue to live in areas at risk from a tectonic
hazard.
Stick the structure strip down the left
hand side of the margin. You will need
to use your diagram to help explain why
some people choose to live in areas
affected by tectonic hazards. The length
of the section shows how much you
should be writing.
Using figure 1 and your own knowledge, explain why people might
choose to live in areas at risk from tectonic hazards.[6]
Figure 1. Yokohama, a city in Japan. Yokohama is close to Mount Fuji, an active
volcano. The area is also prone to earthquakes.
Figure 1 shows Tokyo, a city of nearly 13 million people. The city
itself is on a destructive plate boundary, resulting in volcanoes
(Mt. Fuji), and earthquakes (2011).
Using figure D, evaluate the benefits of
Iceland's location on a plate margin.

Positive– Write down areas of the lesson you have been successful in,
name the key terms or named examples you are now confident in using. What
areas have you worked hard on improving? Named examples, geographical
terms, facts, statistics, explanations, comparison?
Error – Write down areas you are less confident with, certain case studies
or examples you may need to go over again to fully understand. Do you use
enough explanation using named examples and facts in all your answers? Do
you push yourself or are you reliant on the teacher for guidance or pressure
to progress?
Next – Where can you move yourself forward over the next lesson, week or
month. What are you going to start including which will improve your detail
and work?
