It is the basic unit of writing in which
a group of related sentences develops
one main idea.

STRUCTURE
A paragraph regularly has three parts:
1. Topic Sentence: It is usually the
first sentence in a paragraph.
2. Supporting Sentences: They
support the information of the
topic sentence. It
includes specific details
3. Conclusion: It reminds what the
topic sentence was about.

SAMPLE PARAGRAPH:
My Dog Romeo is so much fun to
play with. One reason he’s fun is because
he loves to play catch. What’s also fun is
that he follows me around the house with
a toy and drops it on my foot, so I will
kick it. Additionally, he can catch just
about anything, but his favorite thing to
catch is a Frisbee. Finally, he loves it
when I pretend like I’m falling dead, and
he runs over to lick me. All these reasons
show why I really have fun playing with
Romeo.

UNITY
Unity means that you discuss just one
main idea in the paragraph. The main
idea is stated in the topic sentence and
the supporting sentences develop that
idea.
SUPPORT
It means that the main idea should be
fully developed in the paragraph.
COHERENCE
It is well organized and easy to
read.(well organized details)
COHESION
It means, the paragraph must be well
connected. (linking words and logical order)
14. THE TOPIC
SENTENCE
• It is usually the first sentences in aparagraph.
• Most general statement in paragraph which gives only the
main idea. It does not give any specific details so it should
be narrowed.
• It introduces the main idea of a paragraph.
• Summarize the main idea of your paragraph. Indicate to
the reader what your paragraph will be about.
• Contains both a topic and controlling idea (key words)
