What is a paragraph?
A group of sentences that
develops an idea
 The idea develops with
supporting sentences and
examples
Paragraph Structure
 Topic sentence
First supporting detail
 Second Supporting detail
Third Supporting detail
 Concluding/ Last detail
The Topic Sentence
 Very first sentence of a paragraph, but it can be other places too
Introduces the main idea of a paragraph
 Should contain only one main idea
Should be specific and detailed
 e.g. A paragraph without a topic sentence is like An Army without its
general
 Always needs to be indented.
 Tells what a paragraph is going to be about.
Supporting sentences support the
information of the topic sentence.
The First Detail
 Should not be the most
important detail.
 Needs to follow directly after
the topic sentence.
The Second Detail
 Still should not be the most
important detail.
 Needs to follow directly after
the first detail sentence
The Third Detail
 Still not be the most
important detail.
 Needs to start differently
than other sentences.
The Last Detail
 Finally!! The most important detail.
 Should start differently than most
of the other sentences.
 Needs to be full of good details!
3 Things Make a Good
Paragraph
1. Unity
2. Coherence
3. Elaboration
Unity
When a paragraph has unity,
all the sentences relate
directly to the main idea.
Coherence
A coherent paragraph is one in which
all of the sentences logically fit
together
When a paragraph has coherence,
your reader can easily see how all
of the details are connected
How can we create coherence?
Organizing your details in a specific
order is one way to make your
paragraph clear and coherent.
Elaboration
To add more detail so that your
reader can get a clear picture of what
you mean
Ways to elaborate
 highly descriptive words
 definition
 example
 comparison
 contrast
 Fact
 statistic
 cause & effect
Process to Write a Paragraph
1. Brainstorming
 Think and write down any ideas about a topic
2. Organizing Ideas
 Organize ideas by creating an outline
