German Immigration To The United States And Their...
In the United States of North America ethnic groups are easily found everywhere. As a result, the
American culture is a combination of many other cultures such as Irish, Latin, African, British, etc.
However, one of the most significant of these is the German culture. German influence over this
country is so strong that it goes through science, to architecture, to music, to sports and
entertainment.
Germans left their homeland for several reasons such as, looking for an improved standard of living,
and later looking for freedom from military connection and political oppression (1796–1815), etc. It
is possible to say that Germans have been present in America since the United States belonged to
Great Britain.
According to Eltis (2002), as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the revolutions failed and resulted in even stricter regulations being placed upon the
people." (German Immigration, 1999) In order to avoid dictatorial governments, many people fled
Europe and; consequently, America was a good option for them.
Germans, as many other ethnic groups, where willing to arrive in the "promised land" at any price,
which can be noticed in what they had to do to come here. Eltis notes that since the voyage was
long, difficult, and expensive, "indentured servitude [...] allowed emigrants in effect to charge the
price of the transatlantic fare until after their arrival in America."(2002) At the time, it was pretty
common that immigrant groups were bound to their ethnic lines; for example, German immigrants
were bound mostly to German–American masters. In effect, German colonists financed the surge of
German immigration –families and single young men, "Merchant with interests in developing the
shipping of immigrants across the Atlantic into profitable business introduced the innovative
adaptation of indentured servitude –a strategy which depended in large part on the willingness of
German settlers to invest in the future labor of kin and former neighbors." (Eltis, 2002)
Although German–speaking immigrants complained about indentured servitude concerning

Phillis Wheatley Analysis
Anne Bradstreet once wrote, "If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not
sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome." This quote summarizes much of
what her and fellow female writer Phillis Wheatley's lives were like during their fights for social
change. Throughout their lives, these women were forced to live through challenges and injustices
on levels that are unimaginable to many of members of today's society. With the Bradstreet and
Wheatley did much to counter these challenges, even directly addressing the masses in their writings
as forms of protests. This is precisely the element of which both unites and distinguishes the two
women on a very grand scale. In Phillis Wheatley's "On Being ... Show more content on

She uses her writing to express her ideas on women being significant figures in the world, or at very
least the field of writing. She makes note of the history of writers and how strongly women have
been involved in the process for a number of years, "But sure the antique Greeks were far more mild
/ Else of our sex, why feigned they those nine / And poesy made Calliope's own child" (Bradstreet
31–33).Bradstreet includes this line to establish the belief to her readers that women have been and
should continue to be significant figures in the world of writing and the arts. With the muses of the
famed Greeks being women and successful poets themselves, Bradstreet hopes to argue that women
were important and proficient in the trade that men laid claim to in her time. In all of her piece,
Bradstreet's main idea that she hopes to convey is that since women have been such staples in the art
for so long that it only makes sense for them to be allowed to still. While both authors write in ways
that express "radical" ideas for their respective time periods, they were sure to write in methods that
did not serve to be inflammatory to their largely opposing audiences. This is the point in which their
differences truly shine: their execution of this

INTRODUCTION
Diaspora is the deracination of society from one earthly region to another earthly region. It deals
with the issues and problems of homelessness and integrity crisis. The term ''Diaspora" was mainly
used for exile of JEWS from their homeland. The Diaspora gained values in peopel;s mind with the
result of globalization. In our literature diaspora has no of meanings which actually express the pain
and sufferings of expatriate peoples. The term has many synonymous like migration, immigration,
emigration exile, dispersio also lingers over alienation, loneliness, homelessness, existential
rootlessness, nostalgia, questioning , quest for identity. It also includes the term of ammalgamation
of cultures. In this peopels feeling the clashes of singular and multicultural and past and present and

Analysis Of Maya Angelou 's ' Champion Of The World '
In the United States, there are people from all over the world who come from different backgrounds
and have faced horrendous things. Some of these people feel that their race is inferior to others, but
deal with it in different ways. Although the tension between whites and minorities was at it's
strongest in the 1950's, today's world still deals with racial discrimination. The question "Is one race
superior to all others?" Some overcome this by believing one person can change how other races
perceive them or by confronting the public and shining light on what's going on in the world.
Throughout this paper I will discuss how every person overcomes the stereotypes they face
everyday. I will then analyze how stereotyping and discrimination ... Show more content on

Angelou uses descriptive language to draw the readers in, she gives detail by detail of how the
boxing match took place and all the emotions that were running through her. For the most part the
writer is credible, she explains how the black community in her town came together to listen to the
radio, but after some research it was found that Joe Louis and Primo Carnera only fought once and it
was not a championship fight. Perhaps she was referring to that same fight, but simply made a
mistake. Within any type of ethnic community, people will always find an icon they can believe in,
People use these icons to seek power and acceptance as a way to hide their inferiority complex.
People all over the world are tearing eachother down for meaningless racial competition. It isn't
difficult to see that there are more important things in life than to be boasting about one's race. In
Gloria Naylor's essay, "The Meanings of a Word" (1986), proves that the language of stereotypes
can be powerful and painful to encounter. Naylor supports this statement by providing small
anecdotes of how the first time she truly "heard" that derogatory term compared to when she heard
people of her neighborhood using it. Naylor's purpose is to discuss how a word can go from a
positive connotation to a negative one simply by how it is spoken and by whom in order to

Similarities Between Alice Walker And Maya Angelou
Alice Walker and Maya Angelou are two contemporary African–American writers. Although almost
a generation apart in age, both women display a remarkable similarity in their lives. Each has
written about her experiences growing up in the rural South, Ms. Walker through her essays and Ms.
Angelou in her autobiographies. Though they share similar backgrounds, each has a unique style
that gives the readers, the gift of their exquisite humanity, with all of its frailties and strengths, joys
and sorrows. Tragedy struck both of these women at the age of eight. Ms. Walker lost her sight in
one eye. Ms. Angelou was raped. Each described the incident as part of a larger work. Ms. Walker
related her experience in the body of an essay published ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They encourage the reader to see hope in the midst of sadness. Instead of trying to elicit a particular
emotional response, Angelou invites her audience to share in her thoughts and feelings. For instance,
having given an account of the rape, she writes, "I thought I had died––I woke up in a white–walled
world, and it had to be heaven." The reader feels a connection with her pain, yet realizes redemption
lies close at hand. Whereas Walker tells how she was confronted by her parents, Angelou explains,"
she [mother] picked me up in her arms and the terror abated for a while." There is no impression of
combativeness. There is only tenderness and care. Once again, she invites the reader in. Walker
wants the reader to feel for her; Angelou wants her audience to feel with her. They achieve their
objectives by directing the reader 's attention to specific emotions. The emotional focus of Alice
Walker 's story is rage, red–hot and isolating. As I read this piece, I became livid, not only at the
thought of her devastating injury and her family 's apparent disassociation, but also at Ms. Walker
herself. It appeared to me that she never let go of it. Instead, she seemed to embrace her anger. On
the other hand, Ms. Angelou 's anger is subtle and short–lived. Though I was incensed by what
happened to her, she quietly insisted that I leave it behind. She concentrated less on her anger and
more on the warmth and support of her family. It

Symbolism In Steinbeck's 'The Chrysanthemums'?
In Leroy Thomas' critique of John Steinbeck's "The Chrysanthemums," Thomas draws attention to
the physical shape as well as the gender of Elisa. Thomas does that by referring to Elisa as "totally
unsexed" (Thomas). What Thomas is referring to is Steinbeck's description of Elisa when he says,
"her figure looked blocked and heavy in her gardening costume" (Steinbeck). Thomas also describes
the satisfaction Elisa feels as a woman merely from her conversation with the tinker. Thomas states,
"She has now become a fulfilled woman – proud of her womanhood, her body. Whereas she was
once barren, she now brought forth new life" (Thomas). Thomas explains this further by referring to
the moment after she leaves the tinker, draws herself a bath, admires herself including her body and
symbolizes her beauty by putting on her prettiest dress. Thomas retells when Elisa discovers that the
tinker threw her chrysanthemum sprouts along the side of the road, and justifies that "he had to keep
the pot" (Steinbeck) making the astonishing point that this symbolizes that "her partner in coition
wanted only her body symbolized by the pot; thus the product of their 'love' is merely cast aside"
(Thomas). Steinbeck uses the plot to show gender ideologies by demonstrating what was considered
socially acceptable for a female. Steinbeck's unadorned sentences are crammed with meaning,
demonstrating what was appropriate for Elisa, as a woman. A woman didn't work with her hands
and live like the tinker. It

John Burgoyne Research Paper
John Burgoyne was born February 24, 1722 and died on August 4, 1792. John's well–known
nickname was "Gentleman Johnny." His parents were John Burgoyne and Anne Marie Burgoyne. He
was also the father of 4 children. Burgoyne received his education at Westminster and then went into
the military. He was remembered for his defeat by superior American forces in the Saratoga
campaign of 1777. He got married to the daughter of Lord Derby. Burgoyne was elected to the
House of Commons in 1761. He was assigned to Canada in 1776 as a major general. THE
AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR: Burgoyne's force captured Fort Ticonderoga, New York,
on July 6, 1777 but, after reaching the Hudson River, was fought to a standstill by a much larger
army commanded successively by General Philip Schuylar and General Horatio Gates, who were
brilliantly assisted by Brigadier General Benedict Arnold. General Howe chose to fight
Pennsylvania but left the men with no food and no medical help. St. Leger was defeated at Oriskany,
New York and headed west. Burgoyne surrendered to the gates of Saratoga Springs on October 17,
1777. He left along with his troops and returned to England where he faced horrible criticism. ...

Sexual Rhetors In Response To The Tweeden Scandal
In 2006, Leeann Tweeden was a performer alongside Al Franken on a U.S.O tour abroad. During
transportation from one location to another, Ms. Tweeden fell asleep, Mr. Franken took advantage of
her sleeping state and took a picture with his hands placed over her breasts. She was not made aware
of the pictures existence until she was back in America for quite some time. According to Tweeden,
Franken also forced himself on her while they were rehearsing. Tweeden came forward after
discussing her experience with Democrat Representative Jackie Speier, a leading voice in ending
sexual harassment on Capitol Hill. Sexual misconduct among political leaders in our nation "has
long been a part of work life on Capitol Hill" (Fandos), especially in light of the prior conduct of our
President, the conversation surrounding this topic has never been more pressing. After examining
the rhetoric used by Al Franken and respective media groups in response to the Tweeden Scandal, it
can clearly be observed that the differing motivations of the rhetors drastically shape the rhetoric
produced even though the exigence and audiences are the same.
Firstly, for rhetoric to be established, there must be something to which rhetors respond. The event
must be significant and present (for both the rhetor and audience), so that the response envisioned
by the rhetor can occur. The sexual misconduct of Al Franken is both significant and present because
it enters into the dialogue surrounding the "post Harvey

50 Essays Discussion Questions
1. "Why Don't We Complain" Question 2 Employing simple anecdotes, William F. Buckley argues
in his essay "Why Don't We Complain", that as people continue to ignore rudimentary issues, their
passivity is transferring into political indifference. Buckley begins with a simple story of how "train
temperatures in the dead of the winter... climb up to 85 degrees without complaint" and how "For
generations, Americans who were too hot, or too cold, got up and did something about it". Although
there were many passengers on the train, all visibly uncomfortable, no one said a word to the
conductor about the issue. Buckley implies that the recent disinclination of Americans to speak up
about a problem with a simple solution is only the beginning of a ... Show more content on

Her descriptions of people's content being the same through images of junk in old bags allows her to
drive home the point that people aren't all the different, no matter the appearance. The small detail of
Hurston claiming she has no race allows her to plunge into the powerful bag metaphor, effectively
portraying her conception of race. Hurston's simple details followed by powerful yet perceptible
images powerfully portray her thoughts and points on racial conflict. 4. "No Name Woman"
Question 2 In "No Name Woman", Maxine Kingston's ancestral line serves as a life lesson, whereas
in "In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens", Alice Walker inherits culture and hope. Kingston recounts
the first time hearing of her aunt "who killed herself" due to the fact that she was pregnant, and
"could not have been pregnant... because her husband had been gone for years"; the mom adds a
reminder: "Don't humiliate us. You wouldn't like to be forgotten as if you were never born".
Kingston's aunt disrespected the honor of her family and her village by her lack of faith to her
husband, and creating another person dependent on the village for food, which is always scarce. Her
ancestry and aunt serve as a lesson to always respect family and their well being, or risk being

Review on Mrs Trollope's Domestic Manners of Americans Essay
Mrs. Trollope depicts her seemingly pleasurable exploration in America with caricature which
grounded on the constantly comparison between the American domestic life with her own
experience in Europe with pretension. I have to say that to some extent, this is good travel narrative
full of exaggerated anecdotes rather than real description of Domestic manners of the Americans as
the reader expected. Mrs. Trollope amused herself largely by sneering at the system of new nation
America and its people and enjoyed her ascendency over the folly Americans. Why did she show
such scornful attitude to American style?
The first reason I assume is that she was so eager to settle down in America to start her new life with
her children there. Her real ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Similarly, Mrs. Trollope's fortune did not grow rapidly as she wished, which make her more
resentful to American so–called "free political institutions".
As Mrs. Trollope failed to fulfill her previous dream before she left for America here. She has to
enjoy it. And she did trying to find some follies of Americans to laugh at. Meanwhile she found
some poor people to show her sympathy to make herself believe that she is still leading a better life
over those wretched people. Mrs. Trollope amused herself with coming through the Phrenological
society's ephemeral fate on the 3rd day when subscriptions were expected to be paid. She shows
great contempt on Miss Wright's "ridiculous" conception on giving the blacks equal education to
prove the human are equal. "Could this fact be once fully established, she conceived that the Negro
cause would stand on firmer ground than it had yet done, and the degraded rank which they have
ever held amongst civilized nations would be proved to be a gross injustice." (Chapter 2) For
example, Mrs. Trollope is trying to convince us that she is just a traveler. And Mrs. Trollope also
deceives us the most convincing reason for why we should visit America is we will "feel the more
contented with our own town"(Chapter 5) Moreover Mrs. Trollope arrogantly showed her sympathy

My Favorite Poems On The Theme Of Poetry
Together with four classmates in my English class, I created an anthology of five poems on the
theme of Death. The authors of these poems are Alan Seeger, Emily Dickinson, Henry Scott
Holland, Pablo Neruda, and Sylvia Plath. My favorite poem is Death is nothing at all and my
favorite authors are Emily Dickinson and Sylvia Plath.
While going over the poems and learning about the poets, my favorite poem is "Death is not all" by
Henry Scott Holland. This poem caught my attention because it evokes my thinking. What this
poem is trying to say is that even when you die; your soul stays alive. One of my favorite lines in
this poem is "Nothing is past; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before only
better, infinitely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other work that I enjoy from Emily is "Success is Counted Sweetest"; this poem talks about not
knowing what you have until it is gone, and not appreciating the things you have. I enjoy this poem
because it is true. It tends to be that those who struggle more to get what they want, tend to
appreciate it more than those who get everything easy. Not everyone appreciates success all the way
because once they have the success they lose the ability to care. I think that when you struggle and
go through rough paths you appreciate more because you will always remember those tough times
you had to go through to be successful.
Another one of my favorite authors in this Anthology was Sylvia Plath. I thought it was amazing
how interested she was in writing, and how she started off with just a journal. Something admirable
about Sylvia is that even though her relationship wasn't great because of personal problems with her
husband; she was still able to publish her first poetry collection, and have her first child. Even
though her relationship was falling apart, she was still able to welcome her second child. What is
even more amazing to me is that even after her husband left her for another woman. She was going
through depression and mental illness, she was able to publish her only novel (The Bell Jar.) It is
astonishing to see how she was able to talk about her life experiences while dealing with a mental

Summary Of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr, And James...
Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr, and James Baldwin have some of the most well–known African
American writers. Although they lived during the same time and agreed that race was an enormous
problem, they all had different approaches. For example: King believed in nonviolent protest and
integration, Malcolm X wanted a separate society for blacks and violent protests, and Baldwin knew
that white people were the key to solving inequality if they learned their history of oppression and
wanted integration. While having different ideas, all of them played a key role in the civil rights
movement. None of this would be possible without the works of Phillis Wheatley, David Walker,
and Frederick Douglass. Similarly to the future leaders, Wheatley, Walker, and Douglass have
different ideas on how to combat the oppression in that time. Phillis Wheatley broke the mold when
she had her work published, being not only a woman, but also the first African American author to
be published. She is also oldest of the three like before Walker and Douglass were even born. This
translates into her writing and stylistic choices. In order to be published, Wheatley needed to be
conservative and "safe" in her writing but of course; she found a way around that restriction. At first
glance, her poems may seem thankful to her captors; after a closer look, she disguises the hypocrisy
of her captors and their religion with thankfulness. Wheatley questions, "I, young in life, by seeming

The Stereotypes Of Superman And Me By Sherman Alexie
The Underdog Growing up as a Native American boy on a reservation, Sherman Alexie was not
expected to succeed outside of his reservation home. The expectations for Native American children
were not very high, but Alexie burst out of the stereotype and expectations put by white men. Young
Native Americans were not expected to overcome their stereotypes and were forced to succumb to
low levels of reading and writing "he was expected to fail in a non–Indian world" (Alexie 3), but
Alexie was born with a passion for reading and writing, so much so that he taught himself to read at
age three by simply looking at images in Marvel comics and piecing the words and pictures
together. No young Native American had made it out of his reservation to become a successful
writer like he did. This fabricates a clear ethos for Alexie, he is a perfect underdog in an imperfect
world. In "Superman and Me", Alexie explains his socio–economic status in the reservation and
outside of the reservation. This creates a sense of sympathy and connectedness with the audience
because they pity Alexie's past. Alexie mentions his parents struggles with jobs, "We were poor by
most standards, but one of my parents usually managed to find some minimum wage job or another"
(Alexie 1). The audience now can see how unlikely Alexie is to succeed in comparison to another
child outside of the reserve, this creates a sense of sympathy for Alexie. In a study conducted, it was

Steven Nolt's Approach to the Immigrant Story in the Early...
Steven Nolt takes a different approach the immigrant story during the early Republic. Nolt argues
that German immigrants were in fact the first true immigrants of the United States because they
were the first to struggle culturally to a new country. The immigrants before them were border
countries to England, such as the Irish and Scottish. These groups had minimal problems fitting in
because they were so similar. The Germans on the other hand had quite a bit more difficulty
adapting because their first language was not English and their cultures were drastically different
than their new neighbors. Nolt focuses on a different era than most historians, which gives great
insight into the struggle and times. Instead of focusing on the ... Show more content on

Americans of all ethnicities were struggling to fit in to this new idea of being American. The
German Lutherans began to resemble American Protestants to ease their way into the local
community. Germans would defend their rights just as the other immigrants would. Unsure whether
they were part of this new country and ideal yet or still just immigrants biding their time until
citizenship. One struggle that Nolt faces in Foreigns in Their Own Land would be that he doesn't tie
together the change from peasant republicanism from the Old World to the New World American
ideals. One question Nolt could have discussed would be why peasant ideals were republican and
how did that convert to the new American thoughts. One side that Nolt points out would be that the
Germans saw the separation of church and state a way for them to keep their German heritage when
it comes to church. The Lutherans wanted to keep German speaking worship and since there was a
freedom of religion they were allowed to. Nolt showcases the necessity of ethnicity in the
unification of Lutheran and Reformed. The new generations coming into the waves of religion made
Lutherans and Reformed focused on not only what someone believed but their ethnicity as well.
This would be so that their culture thrived even though their religion had begun to fall into the
American norm of evangelicalism. This rise of

Summary Of Sherman Alexie's Metaphor?
Writers write for a reason, they try to tell a story, describe an image or an emotion or an idea. And
they do this to share a message. Metaphor is more than a 65 point scrabble word, it's a decision that
an author makes in order to further a message that the author is trying to share. Writing has a point.
Both sherman alexie and joy harjo wrote for a reason, in their pieces " a drug called tradition" and "
the women hanging from the thirteenth floor window" they talk about individuals relationships with
their own future and past and the relationships of others. Sherman Alexie speaks about how native
americans relate to their history by shifting from the present to the past, using the same speaker for
both settings. The short story is told by victor, who remembers a time he and two other boys on his
reservation got high. Throughout the story the boys have visions that entail the three of them playing
roles of indians throughout history. First victor is seen stealing a horse, Alexie writes: " crawling
more quickly now, i make my way to the corral, right between the legs of a young boy asleep on his
feet, he was supposed to keep watch for men like me" (15) this shift from the present to the past
introduces both the concept of time, and specifically history, to the story. After the vision about
victor, junior sees thomas dancing. "I dance one step and my sister rises from the ash. I dance
another and a buffalo crashes down from the sky onto a log cabin in nebraska. With

Holden Caulfield Innocence
Innocence may be preserved in a child indefinitely. However, influences from both family and
society impose standards of maturity on children which gradually strip the youthfulness away from a
child. Additionally, children may isolate themselves or face ostracization, which leads to the
degradation of a child's purity as he begins creating his own unique worldview apart of his
community. Parents are the closest influence on a developing child. Therefore, their mature actions
are bound to accumulate over the child, instigating his growth from childhood innocence. This is
especially true when parents perform their intense habits in front of their kids. This is outlined by
Theodore Roethke who recalls his father through a poem. He states how ... Show more content on

This leads to a loss of innocence as the child begins maturing individually and creating their own
unique worldview. J.D. Salinger Highlights this in Catcher in the Rye through Holden Caulfield, and
then reveals the huge remorse which this character faces for isolating himself. Near the end of the
novel Salinger reveals that Holden "sort of [misses] everybody [he] told about..." (Salinger) his life
and with whom he interacted. This demonstrates that Holden did have some meaningful connections
in his life at one time, but eventually lost them because of his isolation, which caused a large amount
of regret and loss of his innocence. This is most evident as Holden states that he even "missed that...
Maurice..." who was a pimp that solicited Holden earlier in the book. That scene, in which Holden
hired a prostitute, was the penultimate indicator that Holden was isolating himself. Even though he
is a teenager, Holden traveled to a city alone to perform mature tasks in order to prove that maturity
to himself. These grown up activities ultimately lead to Holden's dissatisfaction with adulthood. By
the end of this novel, Holden is stuck reminiscing about his past and yearning to go back his
childhood. Because of his isolation and desire to be mature, Holden essentially lost all of his
innocence and fully transformed from a child to an adult. Similarly many children lose their
innocence as a result of their own changing views of the world. Seamus Heaney outlines this in
"Blackberry Picking" where he states that, "each year [he] hoped [his blackberries would] keep" but
" knew they would not." (Heaney) This is an important reminder that time is the ultimate thief of
childhood. Despite a lack of outside influences, Heaney compares his childhood to blackberries to
convey that eventually, both would rot. In time, he knew that nothing completely pure in his

The Importance Of German Immigrants In The United States
The United States has often been referred to as a global "melting pot" due to its assimilation of
diverse cultures, nationalities, and ethnicities. Every year, hundreds of thousands of immigrants,
legal and illegal, from around the world, come into the United States. These immigrants have many
different motivations; some enter the U.S. hoping to get a chance at a chance at a better life; others
are refugees, escaping persecution and civil wars in their home country. Many of these people
believe the United States is the best place to go. There is more freedom, protection, and benefits,
which are important issues with to immigrants. However, while immigrants ran from the problems
of their native land, they were running into new problems in America. Americans feared the
immigrants would take their jobs. This fear caused discrimination against the immigrants due to
their backgrounds which will we see happening to the German and Iran. In the United States of
North America ethnic groups are easily found everywhere. As a result, the American culture is a
mixture of many cultures. However, one of the most significant of these is the German culture.
German influence over this country is so strong that it goes through science music, and

Would World Affairs Be More Peaceful If Women Dominated Politics?
A recent addition to the study of international relations is the idea of gender and the difference it
may have on political beliefs and actions. The argument is rooted in the concept that women are not
as prone to violence and war as men, and therefore would lead the world in a more peaceful
direction than it is currently going. To make this assumption, one would have to suppose that there
are fundamental biological differences between men and women and that these differences result in
behavioral variations as well. This is exactly what Francis Fukuyama does in his article "Women
and the Evolution of World Politics" in the Taking Sides text. For the counter side of ... Show more

In his essay, a study was cited that concluded boys were more aggressive than girls. Psychologist
Judith Bardwick has conducted studies and also found this to be true. However, she contends that
this research does not lead to the findings that girls are passive and nonaggressive (Bardwick). She
states that "to say boys are more aggressive does not mean that girls are not" (Bardwick).
Nonetheless, Fukuyama declares that "a truly matriarchal world, then, would be less prone to
conflict...than the one we inhabit now." Mary Caprioli argues against Fukuyama's claims that a
female dominated society would be more peaceful. She says that though there may be a gender gap
in the support for war, this is not due to women's natural instincts to be passive and non–violent.
Traditionally, women have not had the power, or even the choice, to act violently. Violence is simply
not an option for them. This is why it may appear that survey results show that a majority of women
are anti–war. The outcome of these polls are used by many to assert the idea that all or most women
are more pacific and are opposed to violence. But there are flaws in this evidence. First, a survey
conducted of solely western countries can hardly represent women on a worldwide scale. Second, in
these polls women are likely to express "no opinion" rather than supporting war; this is not the same
as being opposed to it. Most women are noticeably less interested or knowledgeable about war

Across The Atlantic Case Study
At Sea: Across the Atlantic Once the emigrants were aboard the ships that would take them to their
new home, they had to make the most of what was available to them. The ships of the eighteenth
and nineteenth centuries would take several months to reach their destinations, depending on the
weather. This meant that supplies had to be rationed and even then, emigrants might have had to try
and buy food from the crew members on the ships. Even if an emigrant were wealthy enough to
obtain a cabin for himself and or his family, the living conditions were still not very pleasant. With
these conditions in mind it is unlikely that passengers could have performed any religious rites or

The first Lutheran Church in Wisconsin, Trinity Lutheran Church, was built by the first German
Lutherans who arrived in Milwaukee in 1839. New churches continued to be built as more
immigrants settled in Wisconsin, each church built for a specific community of people with similar
ethnic and religious background. In the case of Catholics, there were missionaries in Wisconsin as
early as the seventeenth century and continued to move through the state until the 1730s at which
point the missionary activity stopped. Since this time, Catholic life in Wisconsin has had a German
character to it as more and more German Catholic immigrants came during the peak of German
immigration in the mid–nineteenth century. The last of the major religions from Germany, the
Reformed Church, came to Wisconsin through Pennsylvania in 1793. The first German Reformed
Church was organized with the Swiss of New Glarus in 1840 but later shifted to Lippe–Detmond
and Sheboygan County. As the generations continued the Churches gained more traction as the
number of parishioners increased. The Churches built schools and seminaries where they educated
people, and hospitals as the field of medicine began to develop on the frontier. The Churches, like
the synods, were a way for settlers to interact and socialize with their community. Church life itself

Importance of Early American Women Writers Essay
What could be said to early American women's writers except, thank you? The first American
women's writers opened doors and laid the foundation for future women's writers and readers.
Today's women raise children, supervise households, and work outside the home with every modern
convenience available, and as you would expect do not find the time to write, except for a grocery
list. Early American women raised children and supervised households without the modern
conveniences of today and in some way made time to write the first poetry of the "New World." For
example, Everette Emerson gives a picture of Anne Bradstreet a housewife who stole hours from
sleep for writing gave women American writers their start (4). Different styles of ... Show more

Bradstreet poetry was considered "plain style." She offered the reader a look into the private world,
her world. "Upon Burning in Our House" was a simple style poem about the truth put into simple
words, as were all of Bradstreet's poems. Bradstreet tells about faith in God and belongings lost in
the poem. Bradstreet addressed her husband, children, God, and community in her poems. Her
maternal instinct and dedication were present in her writing. In the poem, "The Author to Her
Book," Bradstreet compares the poem itself to a child, her child:
Thou ill–formed offspring of my feeble brain,
Who after birth did'st by my side remain,
Till snatched from thence by friends, less wise than true,
Who thee abroad, exposed to public view,
Made thee in rags, halting to th' press to trudge,
These errors were not lessened (all may judge).
At thy return my blushing was not small,
my rambling brat in (in print) should mother call,
I cast thee by as one unfit for light,
My visage was so irksome in my sight;
Yet being mine own, at length affection would
thy blemishes amend, if so I could:
I washed thy face, but defects I saw,
And rubbing off a spot, still made a flaw...(Meridian 33.1–14)

Summary Of Emma Lazarus'sThe New Colossus
Originally published in the year 1883, Emma Lazarus' poem The New Colossus portrayed the
United States as a beacon of hope and safety for individuals who found themselves at a disadvantage
throughout the world. Lazarus wrote this poem in an effort to raise money for the construction of a
pedestal at the base of the Statue of Liberty, which eventually came to symbolize the welcoming of
immigrants to the United States in an idealistic fashion. Coincidentally, the Statue of Liberty, a gift
from France, did not act as a symbol for immigrants until after The New Colossus was inscribed on
the base of the statue in the early 1900s. Unfortunately, Emma Lazarus' poem did not represent the
version of the United States that existed between the 1890s and the 1920s. During these years, the
United State was a safe haven for few, if any, non–native and/or non–white groups. Practically any
societal faction that did not fall into the collective category of white, upper–class, American–born
men faced varying degrees of prejudice and discrimination. Perhaps the most targeted and attacked
non–native groups of this time included both Chinese and Western European immigrants. While the
suffering of individuals cannot be quantized or compared, the cumulative experiences of European
and Chinese societal sects demonstrated the various ways in which The New Colossus inaccurately
represented the United States during the 1890s to the 1920s.

The Political, Feminist, and Religious view of Frances E.W. Harper, Phllis Wheatley, and Alice

Phillis Wheatley, Alice Dunbar–Nelson, and Francis E. W. Harper were all groundbreaking and
poignant authors whose works have remained influential throughout time. Feminism, politics, and
religion are three aspects evident in their personal lives an d literature.
Wheatley was considered a feminist icon because she was the first published African American
female poet. However, her writing did not deal with feminist issues, rather, they focussed on
religious and political themes. Unlike Wheatley, Harper's femi nist views are incorporated into her
work. She uses religion as a method to express her political and social views. ... Show more content

CRITICAL ANALYSIS
Phillis Wheatley's political poems have been largely ignored even though she lived in Boston and
was a witness to many events that led to the revolution. Poems such as "To Samuel Quincy, Esq; a
Panegyric," "To the King's Most Excellent Majesty," "To t he Right Honorable William, Earl of
Dartmouth," "To His Excellency General Washington," and "Liberty and Peace" all describe
political events and figures. Each poem dramatizes a decisive moment in America's struggle for
independence. Wheatley writes a l ot of political praise poems, which means this, was probably a
very important subject to her. Since Wheatley was a domestic female slave she was very bold to
compose such commentaries which suggests that maybe an African tradition taught her that politic
al praise was the most important to all poets (Robinson, 93).
Phillis Wheatley was a minority because of her race and her sex. In the eighteenth century woman
writers were the visible minority and black–female writers were non existent. Male critics felt that
there were to many female writers and that they wer e a threat to

African Americans During Ww1
America's False Freedoms During World War One, as America continued to grow in numbers, much
of the new American population was made up of immigrants. America was still working on the path
to grant freedom to all who considered the United States their home. Many immigrants primarily
came to America in search of true freedom and to gain opportunities that they otherwise could not
have access to in their homeland. World War One; however, made it extremely difficult for some
immigrant Americans and African Americans to receive the true freedom that they came in search
for. Not only did WWI make it difficult for certain groups to live in America, it also gave rise to
contradictions between the language of freedom and the reality of restrictions made on individual
freedoms. Immigrants were being treated poorly and protecting the U.S. from the enemy was
becoming more important than providing all Americans with the individual freedoms that they had
come to the U.S. in search for. On top of that anti–immigration movements were intensifying. The
freedom the United States had promised to many, was either being limited or simply not being
given. The repercussions of WWI had a larger effect on some immigrant groups than others. One of
the groups that was affected the most by WWI in the United States, was the German population.
Germany's role in the war made life increasingly difficult for German Americans. During the war,
the whole German race was being painted as the enemy.

The Characteristics Of Media Feeding Frrenzy By Larry Sabato
The media is a citizen's gateway to the world of politics. For the majority of Americans the news is
their primary source of information and the substance of that news very often is based on the
number of viewers it will draw, not the importance of the story. Basically the media shows you the
stories that it wants you to know, but it also shows the stories it wants you to get upset about. A trait
that the general media has developed for the past double decades is that of jumping on a story
particularly about political figures and going into frenzy for as long as the public's attention span
will allow them to. Often times it is because of something a person did wrong or controversially, but
that is not always the case as it could be over something very ordinary but just surprising. Media
feeding frenzies can sometimes be warranted, and other times they just seem to happen because
there's nothing else for them to latch onto at the time. Billygate, Jimmy Carter's "killer rabbit" and
Sarah Palin being announced as John McCain's running mate in 2008 are just a few examples of
media feeding frenzies. In "Feeding Frenzy" by Larry Sabato he is critical of the characteristics of
the media in situations where they openly ridicule and attack a widely known person for some sort
of wrongdoing, or past indiscretion. According to Sabato, journalists and the media now fit snugly
into their newfound role as gatekeeper, which he says enables them to basically screen people who

Taking a Look at African American Poets
Who continues to ring bells when African American poets are mentioned? The legends who have
influenced the path in which our ancestors fought hard to obtain in past generations. Booker T.
Washington, Rita Dove, Richard Wright, Zora Hurston and Langston Hughes were a few among
various highly influential poets during the 1900s. One of the biggest accomplishments of blacks
today is that literature has developed from these African American poets. These individuals have set
a tone and path to allow writers of any ethnicity to express themselves in various ways. Through
poems, plays, novels, and alternative means of presentation, these famous African American poets
are still being presented through present work. African American poet, Booker Taliaferro
Washington, born in Virginia April 5, 1856 to November 14, was not only an author, but the
educator of his time. Washington excelled in education at Hampton and later used the skills to
further his aspirations. With these skills he founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute on
the Hampton model in the Black Belt of Alabama. Becoming the spokesman for these organizations,
Washington was able to convince employers of the Caucasian ethnicity that these programs would
keep blacks on the farm to work. In reality, this idea would enable blacks to escape, have goals, and
be free. From these ideas, Washington was able to make the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial
Institute one of the best support systems for African American

How The Germans Influenced Modern Day Slavery Essay
Bruce R. Kokubun
Mr. Black
7th Grade World Studies P.2
16 November 2016 How The Germans Influenced Modern Day Slavery Today I will be talking
about how Germany influenced slavery, war, peoples' perspective on immigrants, and many more
things and how it affected modern day life. I think Germany greatly affected today partly because of
Hitler. I think he greatly influenced the world because of his personality. I also think that the
German army was very strong making them feared, powerful, and united. I also think that Germany
still has lots of power and is still feared today as a torture and powerful country. I think that many
people today and maybe even countries think that Germany is a bad country. If you are one of those
people, I hope today I can change your mind because Germany is a very intelligent and cool country
because without them, our world would be greatly changed. I think Germans influence on slavery
and many more things greatly changed people's perspective on immigrant's and ideas. Germanys
background is very unique and very engrossing. With Germany being the third largest country in the
European Union, following the Boot, France and finally Spain, Germany has a lot of power.
(Countries of the World) Germany also had a history of being divided, which means they are not
very united but can make strong comebacks. A little after A.D. 436, Germany was divided and ruled
by tribal leaders. Because of this, some of the tribes called themselves holy. By taking

He becomes distracted which opens him up as an easy target. Contradistinctively to Ellison's "Battle
Royal," W.E.B. Du Bois' "Of Mr. Booker T. Washington," contains a more positive and supportive
aspect. Du Bois states, "First it is the duty of the black men to judge the South discriminatingly. The
present generation of Southerners are not responsible for the past, and they should not be blindly
hated or blamed for it" (De Bois 1166). By stating this, the author is defending the African race by
claiming that the punishment for the actions of their ancestors should not be burdened with them.
We read that the sons of a black person's master will sometimes want to help rise and benefit the
individual. Du Bois claims, "National opinion has enabled this last class to maintain the Negro
common schools, and to protect the Negro partially in property, life, and limb" (1166). This tells
readers that the African race is beginning to receive their rights, along with having opportunities to
access them. During "The Lesson," it is the children who display the majority of the profanity, along
with the rude and cruel actions. When they arrive at a toy store on the other side of town, Sylvia, the
protagonist, and her friends discover a microscope which spark their interest. Their care giver, Miss
Moore, attempts to interact with the children. As a result, Sylvia quotes her

Figurative Language In The King Of The Bingo Game
Jamaica Kincaid's short story Girl and Ralph Ellison's King of the Bingo Game display prejudices,
insecurities, and African Americans' struggle to find their own identity in the mid to late 1900s. In
Girl, an unnamed daughter receives critical instructions and harsh advice from her mother about
how to take care of a home, behave like a respectful woman, and have a proper, loving relationship.
In the King of the Bingo Game, an unnamed middle–aged man plays a bingo game that will

stories, the authors utilize different style elements in order to convey a similar theme. By cleverly

(437). Slut is a powerful word referring to a woman of dirty habits or appearance; therefore, the
repetitive use of this word displays the negative, hostile relationship between them. Instead of
repeating phrases like Kincaid, Ellison utilizes polysyndeton and alliteration to create a similar,
devastating effect. To describe the protagonist's anxiety and stress in regard to the bingo game,
Ellison portrays him as a "long thin black wire that was being stretched and wound upon the bingo

children, her goal was to open their eyes and make them aware of how much more there is out there

on it? Where we are is who we are, Miss Moore always pointin out. But it don't necessarily have to

life they have to work at it, but not as in individual but as a whole, a class. The only way for them to
make a difference to change societies view of their class and become part of the rest of societies.

characters' lives are illuminated and transformed by the mundane household details. The 'Girl'; is

Indian Boy Love Song Analysis
The poems "New Orleans" by Joy Harjo and "Indian Boy Love Song (#2) by Sherman Alexie have
two very similar themes. Themes are underlying message, or main ideas, basically the theme is the
lesson you learned after you read a story, or in this instance a poem. The theme in "New Orleans" is
that you should put forth the effort to find out about your culture's history. While the theme of
"Indian Boy Love Song(#2) is that you should, try your hardest to become close to your elders, don't
be distant. While both themes are focused on their culture, "New Orleans" is actually looking for
information on her Creek culture, but "Indian Boy Love Song (#2)" is apologizing about how he's
distant from his culture. In the poem "New Orleans" the theme is that to learn more about your
culture, you should put forth the effort. To get this message Harjo used compare and contrasting. For
example " They caught him in blue rock, said don't talk. I know it wasn't just a horse that went
crazy." This is showing development because it's showing how her people got caught, and they
attacked any and everything. Another way the author shows this is by saying "I have a memory. It
swims deep in blood, a delta in the skin." This shows that her heritage runs deep through her. In
addition to these two quotes, another quote that shows relation toward this development is " Nearby

German Immigration And The Development Of The Beer Industry
German Immigration and the development of the Beer Industry in America Many Germany's
immigrated to the United States in 1840. Repression initiated the emigration, due to the political
unrest and the failed revolution of 1848, economic distress and political aggression forced many to
flee Germany. Many that fled were young, educated or skilled from well to do families seeking
political freedom, opportunity, land, and the wealth that the United States offered. The largest
locations of German immigration in 1848 were New York City, Baltimore, Milwaukee, St. Louis
and Cincinnati which constituted the so called "German Triangle". By 1860, over 1.3 million
German immigrants had entered the United States, the population grew to nearly 3 ... Show more

During the Pre–Civil war period breweries such as Jacob Best's which later became Pabst Brewing
and Joseph Schlitz –Miller Brewing began to operate in brewing plants. This period of technological
revolution begin with the introduction of the steam engine led to changes in transportation and
production (Stack 2000).
The local demands were too small to absorb the output of the plants and the cost for production and
transportation to ship to further away locations were expensive. Also with transportation being slow
and beer having a limited shelf life long distance shipping was not feasible.
The answer to the problem came by way of Adolphus Busch, a wholesaler who had immigrated to
St. Louis from Germany in 1857, he married Eberhard Anheuser 's daughter, Lilly, in 1861. Busch
began working as a salesman for the Anheuser brewery. Busch purchased shares of the company in
1869 and after the death of his father in–law he began to run the company. Adolphus Busch was the
first American brewer to use pasteurization to keep beer fresh he was also the first to use mechanical
refrigeration refrigerated railroad cars, which he introduced in 1876, and the first to bottle beer
extensively. By 1877, the company owned a fleet of 40 refrigerated railroad cars to transport beer.
Expanding the company 's distribution

Impact Of Atlantic Crossing Immigrants On U.s. Education
Impact of Atlantic Crossing Immigrants on U.S. Education
From the 19th century to present many immigrants have come to the United States seeking a better
life. These immigrants have had a profound impact on the United States. The school system was
especially affected by these immigrants and was faced with the difficulty of integrating the influx of
immigrants into the educational system. The effects of integrating these immigrants such as the
Irish, German and Italian immigrants has had a profound and far reaching impact on education, even
up to the present day. Their experiences in coming to the United States helped us to develop private
Catholic schools and establish kindergarten classrooms,
In the early 19th century many Irish people immigrated to the United States. There were several
reasons why Irish people came to live in America. During the American Industrial Revolution, many
immigrants from all over, including Ireland, came to The New World to find new opportunities.
There were also great religious opportunities from the largely Roman Catholic influence in Irish
culture to the various Protestant religions here. All was well and good as Americans and immigrants
worked together to expand the railroad and canals in the New England States, primarily New Jersey,
Pennsylvania, and New York (Irish American Journey). In 1819, 43 percent of immigrants to
America were Irish (Immigration). In Ireland at the time, most people were farmers and lived off
potato crops for

Analysis Of Angelou 's I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings
The world of literature has been dominated by males throughout most of history; this is due to the
fact that women we're thought of as inferior to men. Over the last 100 years women have been
proving themselves in this sexist society, especially in the world of literature–poetry, to be more
specific. Two names come to mind when thinking of great female poets: Maya Angelou and Emily
Dickinson. Even thought both of these women we're outstanding poets, they had quite different
styles of writing due to the difference in time periods, experiences, and culture. As time goes by,
society is influenced in different ways due to human evolution. This was true for both Maya
Angelou and Emily Dickinson. Maya Angelou was born April 4, 1928. This means she was born
right in the middle of segregation. This influenced Angelou because she was an African American
woman who wrote about freedom for her people. The best example would be her famous novel and
poem "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings." The book is about her life struggles and the poem is a
metaphor about a bird that seeks freedom. The final stanza of the poem reads "The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for
the caged bird sings of freedom." This excerpt of the poem demonstrates how she yearned for her
people to get the freedom they deserved. The comparison of the caged bird and the bird that's free
can be seen in many different ways. The first one

  • 1. German Immigration To The United States And Their... In the United States of North America ethnic groups are easily found everywhere. As a result, the American culture is a combination of many other cultures such as Irish, Latin, African, British, etc. However, one of the most significant of these is the German culture. German influence over this country is so strong that it goes through science, to architecture, to music, to sports and entertainment. Germans left their homeland for several reasons such as, looking for an improved standard of living, and later looking for freedom from military connection and political oppression (1796–1815), etc. It is possible to say that Germans have been present in America since the United States belonged to Great Britain. According to Eltis (2002), as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the revolutions failed and resulted in even stricter regulations being placed upon the people." (German Immigration, 1999) In order to avoid dictatorial governments, many people fled Europe and; consequently, America was a good option for them. Germans, as many other ethnic groups, where willing to arrive in the "promised land" at any price, which can be noticed in what they had to do to come here. Eltis notes that since the voyage was long, difficult, and expensive, "indentured servitude [...] allowed emigrants in effect to charge the price of the transatlantic fare until after their arrival in America."(2002) At the time, it was pretty common that immigrant groups were bound to their ethnic lines; for example, German immigrants were bound mostly to German–American masters. In effect, German colonists financed the surge of German immigration –families and single young men, "Merchant with interests in developing the shipping of immigrants across the Atlantic into profitable business introduced the innovative adaptation of indentured servitude –a strategy which depended in large part on the willingness of German settlers to invest in the future labor of kin and former neighbors." • 3. Phillis Wheatley Analysis Anne Bradstreet once wrote, "If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome." This quote summarizes much of what her and fellow female writer Phillis Wheatley's lives were like during their fights for social change. Throughout their lives, these women were forced to live through challenges and injustices on levels that are unimaginable to many of members of today's society. With the Bradstreet and Wheatley did much to counter these challenges, even directly addressing the masses in their writings as forms of protests. This is precisely the element of which both unites and distinguishes the two women on a very grand scale. In Phillis Wheatley's "On Being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She uses her writing to express her ideas on women being significant figures in the world, or at very least the field of writing. She makes note of the history of writers and how strongly women have been involved in the process for a number of years, "But sure the antique Greeks were far more mild / Else of our sex, why feigned they those nine / And poesy made Calliope's own child" (Bradstreet 31–33).Bradstreet includes this line to establish the belief to her readers that women have been and should continue to be significant figures in the world of writing and the arts. With the muses of the famed Greeks being women and successful poets themselves, Bradstreet hopes to argue that women were important and proficient in the trade that men laid claim to in her time. In all of her piece, Bradstreet's main idea that she hopes to convey is that since women have been such staples in the art for so long that it only makes sense for them to be allowed to still. While both authors write in ways that express "radical" ideas for their respective time periods, they were sure to write in methods that did not serve to be inflammatory to their largely opposing audiences. This is the point in which their differences truly shine: their execution of this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Analysis Of Maya Angelou 's ' Champion Of The World ' In the United States, there are people from all over the world who come from different backgrounds and have faced horrendous things. Some of these people feel that their race is inferior to others, but deal with it in different ways. Although the tension between whites and minorities was at it's strongest in the 1950's, today's world still deals with racial discrimination. The question "Is one race superior to all others?" Some overcome this by believing one person can change how other races perceive them or by confronting the public and shining light on what's going on in the world. Throughout this paper I will discuss how every person overcomes the stereotypes they face everyday. I will then analyze how stereotyping and discrimination ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Angelou uses descriptive language to draw the readers in, she gives detail by detail of how the boxing match took place and all the emotions that were running through her. For the most part the writer is credible, she explains how the black community in her town came together to listen to the radio, but after some research it was found that Joe Louis and Primo Carnera only fought once and it was not a championship fight. Perhaps she was referring to that same fight, but simply made a mistake. Within any type of ethnic community, people will always find an icon they can believe in, People use these icons to seek power and acceptance as a way to hide their inferiority complex. People all over the world are tearing eachother down for meaningless racial competition. It isn't difficult to see that there are more important things in life than to be boasting about one's race. In Gloria Naylor's essay, "The Meanings of a Word" (1986), proves that the language of stereotypes can be powerful and painful to encounter. Naylor supports this statement by providing small anecdotes of how the first time she truly "heard" that derogatory term compared to when she heard people of her neighborhood using it. • 9. Similarities Between Alice Walker And Maya Angelou Alice Walker and Maya Angelou are two contemporary African–American writers. Although almost a generation apart in age, both women display a remarkable similarity in their lives. Each has written about her experiences growing up in the rural South, Ms. Walker through her essays and Ms. Angelou in her autobiographies. Though they share similar backgrounds, each has a unique style that gives the readers, the gift of their exquisite humanity, with all of its frailties and strengths, joys and sorrows. Tragedy struck both of these women at the age of eight. Ms. Walker lost her sight in one eye. Ms. Angelou was raped. Each described the incident as part of a larger work. Ms. Walker related her experience in the body of an essay published ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They encourage the reader to see hope in the midst of sadness. Instead of trying to elicit a particular emotional response, Angelou invites her audience to share in her thoughts and feelings. For instance, having given an account of the rape, she writes, "I thought I had died––I woke up in a white–walled world, and it had to be heaven." The reader feels a connection with her pain, yet realizes redemption lies close at hand. Whereas Walker tells how she was confronted by her parents, Angelou explains," she [mother] picked me up in her arms and the terror abated for a while." There is no impression of combativeness. There is only tenderness and care. Once again, she invites the reader in. Walker wants the reader to feel for her; Angelou wants her audience to feel with her. They achieve their objectives by directing the reader 's attention to specific emotions. The emotional focus of Alice Walker 's story is rage, red–hot and isolating. As I read this piece, I became livid, not only at the thought of her devastating injury and her family 's apparent disassociation, but also at Ms. Walker herself. It appeared to me that she never let go of it. Instead, she seemed to embrace her anger. On the other hand, Ms. Angelou 's anger is subtle and short–lived. Though I was incensed by what happened to her, she quietly insisted that I leave it behind. She concentrated less on her anger and more on the warmth and support of her family. It ... • 11. Symbolism In Steinbeck's 'The Chrysanthemums'? In Leroy Thomas' critique of John Steinbeck's "The Chrysanthemums," Thomas draws attention to the physical shape as well as the gender of Elisa. Thomas does that by referring to Elisa as "totally unsexed" (Thomas). What Thomas is referring to is Steinbeck's description of Elisa when he says, "her figure looked blocked and heavy in her gardening costume" (Steinbeck). Thomas also describes the satisfaction Elisa feels as a woman merely from her conversation with the tinker. Thomas states, "She has now become a fulfilled woman – proud of her womanhood, her body. Whereas she was once barren, she now brought forth new life" (Thomas). Thomas explains this further by referring to the moment after she leaves the tinker, draws herself a bath, admires herself including her body and symbolizes her beauty by putting on her prettiest dress. Thomas retells when Elisa discovers that the tinker threw her chrysanthemum sprouts along the side of the road, and justifies that "he had to keep the pot" (Steinbeck) making the astonishing point that this symbolizes that "her partner in coition wanted only her body symbolized by the pot; thus the product of their 'love' is merely cast aside" (Thomas). Steinbeck uses the plot to show gender ideologies by demonstrating what was considered socially acceptable for a female. Steinbeck's unadorned sentences are crammed with meaning, demonstrating what was appropriate for Elisa, as a woman. A woman didn't work with her hands and live like the tinker. It ... His parents were John Burgoyne and Anne Marie Burgoyne. He was also the father of 4 children. Burgoyne received his education at Westminster and then went into the military. He was remembered for his defeat by superior American forces in the Saratoga campaign of 1777. He got married to the daughter of Lord Derby. Burgoyne was elected to the House of Commons in 1761. He was assigned to Canada in 1776 as a major general. THE AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR: Burgoyne's force captured Fort Ticonderoga, New York, on July 6, 1777 but, after reaching the Hudson River, was fought to a standstill by a much larger army commanded successively by General Philip Schuylar and General Horatio Gates, who were brilliantly assisted by Brigadier General Benedict Arnold. General Howe chose to fight Pennsylvania but left the men with no food and no medical help. St. Leger was defeated at Oriskany, New York and headed west. During transportation from one location to another, Ms. Tweeden fell asleep, Mr. Franken took advantage of her sleeping state and took a picture with his hands placed over her breasts. She was not made aware of the pictures existence until she was back in America for quite some time. According to Tweeden, Franken also forced himself on her while they were rehearsing. Tweeden came forward after discussing her experience with Democrat Representative Jackie Speier, a leading voice in ending sexual harassment on Capitol Hill. Sexual misconduct among political leaders in our nation "has long been a part of work life on Capitol Hill" (Fandos), especially in light of the prior conduct of our President, the conversation surrounding this topic has never been more pressing. After examining the rhetoric used by Al Franken and respective media groups in response to the Tweeden Scandal, it can clearly be observed that the differing motivations of the rhetors drastically shape the rhetoric produced even though the exigence and audiences are the same. Firstly, for rhetoric to be established, there must be something to which rhetors respond. The event must be significant and present (for both the rhetor and audience), so that the response envisioned by the rhetor can occur. The sexual misconduct of Al Franken is both significant and present because it enters into the dialogue surrounding the "post Harvey ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Buckley argues in his essay "Why Don't We Complain", that as people continue to ignore rudimentary issues, their passivity is transferring into political indifference. Buckley begins with a simple story of how "train temperatures in the dead of the winter... climb up to 85 degrees without complaint" and how "For generations, Americans who were too hot, or too cold, got up and did something about it". Although there were many passengers on the train, all visibly uncomfortable, no one said a word to the conductor about the issue. Review on Mrs Trollope's Domestic Manners of Americans Essay Mrs. Trollope depicts her seemingly pleasurable exploration in America with caricature which grounded on the constantly comparison between the American domestic life with her own experience in Europe with pretension. I have to say that to some extent, this is good travel narrative full of exaggerated anecdotes rather than real description of Domestic manners of the Americans as the reader expected. Mrs. Trollope amused herself largely by sneering at the system of new nation America and its people and enjoyed her ascendency over the folly Americans. Why did she show such scornful attitude to American style? The first reason I assume is that she was so eager to settle down in America to start her new life with her children there. Her real ... Meanwhile she found some poor people to show her sympathy to make herself believe that she is still leading a better life over those wretched people. Mrs. Trollope amused herself with coming through the Phrenological society's ephemeral fate on the 3rd day when subscriptions were expected to be paid. She shows great contempt on Miss Wright's "ridiculous" conception on giving the blacks equal education to prove the human are equal. "Could this fact be once fully established, she conceived that the Negro cause would stand on firmer ground than it had yet done, and the degraded rank which they have ever held amongst civilized nations would be proved to be a gross injustice." The authors of these poems are Alan Seeger, Emily Dickinson, Henry Scott Holland, Pablo Neruda, and Sylvia Plath. My favorite poem is Death is nothing at all and my favorite authors are Emily Dickinson and Sylvia Plath. While going over the poems and learning about the poets, my favorite poem is "Death is not all" by Henry Scott Holland. This poem caught my attention because it evokes my thinking. What this poem is trying to say is that even when you die; your soul stays alive. One of my favorite lines in this poem is "Nothing is past; nothing is lost. Other work that I enjoy from Emily is "Success is Counted Sweetest"; this poem talks about not knowing what you have until it is gone, and not appreciating the things you have. I enjoy this poem because it is true. It tends to be that those who struggle more to get what they want, tend to appreciate it more than those who get everything easy. Not everyone appreciates success all the way because once they have the success they lose the ability to care. I think that when you struggle and go through rough paths you appreciate more because you will always remember those tough times you had to go through to be successful. Another one of my favorite authors in this Anthology was Sylvia Plath. I thought it was amazing how interested she was in writing, and how she started off with just a journal. Something admirable about Sylvia is that even though her relationship wasn't great because of personal problems with her husband; she was still able to publish her first poetry collection, and have her first child. Even though her relationship was falling apart, she was still able to welcome her second child. What is even more amazing to me is that even after her husband left her for another woman. She was going through depression and mental illness, she was able to publish her only novel (The Bell Jar.) • 23. Summary Of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr, And James... Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr, and James Baldwin have some of the most well–known African American writers. Although they lived during the same time and agreed that race was an enormous problem, they all had different approaches. For example: King believed in nonviolent protest and integration, Malcolm X wanted a separate society for blacks and violent protests, and Baldwin knew that white people were the key to solving inequality if they learned their history of oppression and wanted integration. While having different ideas, all of them played a key role in the civil rights movement. None of this would be possible without the works of Phillis Wheatley, David Walker, and Frederick Douglass. Similarly to the future leaders, Wheatley, Walker, and Douglass have different ideas on how to combat the oppression in that time. Phillis Wheatley broke the mold when she had her work published, being not only a woman, but also the first African American author to be published. She is also oldest of the three like before Walker and Douglass were even born. This translates into her writing and stylistic choices. In order to be published, Wheatley needed to be conservative and "safe" in her writing but of course; she found a way around that restriction. At first glance, her poems may seem thankful to her captors; after a closer look, she disguises the hypocrisy of her captors and their religion with thankfulness. "Confronted" is a combative word. When people are confronted by others, they want to launch an attack. Her style and choice of words make the reader aware that she is alone and fearful. She is left to fight her battles by herself. Maya Angelou narrates her account in a conversational tone. She uses the past tense which tells her audience "it's over" for her. Her words are free from severity. Whereas Walker tells how she was confronted by her parents, Angelou explains,"she [mother] picked me up in her arms and the terror abated for a while." There is no impression of combativeness. There is only tenderness and care. Once again, she invites the reader in. Walker wants the reader to feel for her; Angelou wants her audience to feel with her. The Stereotypes Of Superman And Me By Sherman Alexie The Underdog Growing up as a Native American boy on a reservation, Sherman Alexie was not expected to succeed outside of his reservation home. The expectations for Native American children were not very high, but Alexie burst out of the stereotype and expectations put by white men. Young Native Americans were not expected to overcome their stereotypes and were forced to succumb to low levels of reading and writing "he was expected to fail in a non–Indian world" (Alexie 3), but Alexie was born with a passion for reading and writing, so much so that he taught himself to read at age three by simply looking at images in Marvel comics and piecing the words and pictures together. No young Native American had made it out of his reservation to become a successful writer like he did. This fabricates a clear ethos for Alexie, he is a perfect underdog in an imperfect world. In "Superman and Me", Alexie explains his socio–economic status in the reservation and outside of the reservation. This creates a sense of sympathy and connectedness with the audience because they pity Alexie's past. Alexie mentions his parents struggles with jobs, "We were poor by most standards, but one of my parents usually managed to find some minimum wage job or another" (Alexie 1). Nolt argues that German immigrants were in fact the first true immigrants of the United States because they were the first to struggle culturally to a new country. The immigrants before them were border countries to England, such as the Irish and Scottish. These groups had minimal problems fitting in because they were so similar. The Germans on the other hand had quite a bit more difficulty adapting because their first language was not English and their cultures were drastically different than their new neighbors. One struggle that Nolt faces in Foreigns in Their Own Land would be that he doesn't tie together the change from peasant republicanism from the Old World to the New World American ideals. One question Nolt could have discussed would be why peasant ideals were republican and how did that convert to the new American thoughts. One side that Nolt points out would be that the Germans saw the separation of church and state a way for them to keep their German heritage when it comes to church. The Lutherans wanted to keep German speaking worship and since there was a freedom of religion they were allowed to. Nolt showcases the necessity of ethnicity in the unification of Lutheran and Reformed. • 31. Summary Of Sherman Alexie's Metaphor? Writers write for a reason, they try to tell a story, describe an image or an emotion or an idea. And they do this to share a message. Metaphor is more than a 65 point scrabble word, it's a decision that an author makes in order to further a message that the author is trying to share. Writing has a point. Both sherman alexie and joy harjo wrote for a reason, in their pieces " a drug called tradition" and " the women hanging from the thirteenth floor window" they talk about individuals relationships with their own future and past and the relationships of others. Sherman Alexie speaks about how native americans relate to their history by shifting from the present to the past, using the same speaker for both settings. The short story is told by victor, who remembers a time he and two other boys on his reservation got high. Throughout the story the boys have visions that entail the three of them playing roles of indians throughout history. First victor is seen stealing a horse, Alexie writes: " crawling more quickly now, i make my way to the corral, right between the legs of a young boy asleep on his feet, he was supposed to keep watch for men like me" (15) this shift from the present to the past introduces both the concept of time, and specifically history, to the story. However, influences from both family and society impose standards of maturity on children which gradually strip the youthfulness away from a child. Additionally, children may isolate themselves or face ostracization, which leads to the degradation of a child's purity as he begins creating his own unique worldview apart of his community. Parents are the closest influence on a developing child. Therefore, their mature actions are bound to accumulate over the child, instigating his growth from childhood innocence. This is especially true when parents perform their intense habits in front of their kids. This is outlined by Theodore Roethke who recalls his father through a poem. He states how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This leads to a loss of innocence as the child begins maturing individually and creating their own unique worldview. J.D. Salinger Highlights this in Catcher in the Rye through Holden Caulfield, and then reveals the huge remorse which this character faces for isolating himself. Near the end of the novel Salinger reveals that Holden "sort of [misses] everybody [he] told about..." (Salinger) his life and with whom he interacted. This demonstrates that Holden did have some meaningful connections in his life at one time, but eventually lost them because of his isolation, which caused a large amount of regret and loss of his innocence. This is most evident as Holden states that he even "missed that... Maurice..." who was a pimp that solicited Holden earlier in the book. That scene, in which Holden hired a prostitute, was the penultimate indicator that Holden was isolating himself. Even though he is a teenager, Holden traveled to a city alone to perform mature tasks in order to prove that maturity to himself. These grown up activities ultimately lead to Holden's dissatisfaction with adulthood. By the end of this novel, Holden is stuck reminiscing about his past and yearning to go back his childhood. Because of his isolation and desire to be mature, Holden essentially lost all of his innocence and fully transformed from a child to an adult. Similarly many children lose their innocence as a result of their own changing views of the world. Seamus Heaney outlines this in "Blackberry Picking" where he states that, "each year [he] hoped [his blackberries would] keep" but " knew they would not." (Heaney) This is an important reminder that time is the ultimate thief of childhood. Despite a lack of outside influences, Heaney compares his childhood to blackberries to convey that eventually, both would rot. In time, he knew that nothing completely pure in his ... • 35. The Importance Of German Immigrants In The United States The United States has often been referred to as a global "melting pot" due to its assimilation of diverse cultures, nationalities, and ethnicities. Every year, hundreds of thousands of immigrants, legal and illegal, from around the world, come into the United States. These immigrants have many different motivations; some enter the U.S. hoping to get a chance at a chance at a better life; others are refugees, escaping persecution and civil wars in their home country. Many of these people believe the United States is the best place to go. There is more freedom, protection, and benefits, which are important issues with to immigrants. However, while immigrants ran from the problems of their native land, they were running into new problems in America. Americans feared the immigrants would take their jobs. This fear caused discrimination against the immigrants due to their backgrounds which will we see happening to the German and Iran. In the United States of North America ethnic groups are easily found everywhere. As a result, the American culture is a mixture of many cultures. However, one of the most significant of these is the German culture. German influence over this country is so strong that it goes through science music, and entertainment. A recent addition to the study of international relations is the idea of gender and the difference it may have on political beliefs and actions. The argument is rooted in the concept that women are not as prone to violence and war as men, and therefore would lead the world in a more peaceful direction than it is currently going. To make this assumption, one would have to suppose that there are fundamental biological differences between men and women and that these differences result in behavioral variations as well. In his essay, a study was cited that concluded boys were more aggressive than girls. Psychologist Judith Bardwick has conducted studies and also found this to be true. However, she contends that this research does not lead to the findings that girls are passive and nonaggressive (Bardwick). She states that "to say boys are more aggressive does not mean that girls are not" (Bardwick). Nonetheless, Fukuyama declares that "a truly matriarchal world, then, would be less prone to conflict...than the one we inhabit now." Mary Caprioli argues against Fukuyama's claims that a female dominated society would be more peaceful. She says that though there may be a gender gap in the support for war, this is not due to women's natural instincts to be passive and non–violent. Traditionally, women have not had the power, or even the choice, to act violently. Violence is simply not an option for them. This is why it may appear that survey results show that a majority of women are anti–war. The outcome of these polls are used by many to assert the idea that all or most women are more pacific and are opposed to violence. But there are flaws in this evidence. First, a survey conducted of solely western countries can hardly represent women on a worldwide scale. Second, in these polls women are likely to express "no opinion" rather than supporting war; this is not the same as being opposed to it. • 46. Summary Of Emma Lazarus'sThe New Colossus Originally published in the year 1883, Emma Lazarus' poem The New Colossus portrayed the United States as a beacon of hope and safety for individuals who found themselves at a disadvantage throughout the world. Lazarus wrote this poem in an effort to raise money for the construction of a pedestal at the base of the Statue of Liberty, which eventually came to symbolize the welcoming of immigrants to the United States in an idealistic fashion. Coincidentally, the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France, did not act as a symbol for immigrants until after The New Colossus was inscribed on the base of the statue in the early 1900s. Unfortunately, Emma Lazarus' poem did not represent the version of the United States that existed between the 1890s and the 1920s. During these years, the United State was a safe haven for few, if any, non–native and/or non–white groups. Practically any societal faction that did not fall into the collective category of white, upper–class, American–born men faced varying degrees of prejudice and discrimination. Perhaps the most targeted and attacked non–native groups of this time included both Chinese and Western European immigrants. While the suffering of individuals cannot be quantized or compared, the cumulative experiences of European and Chinese societal sects demonstrated the various ways in which The New Colossus inaccurately represented the United States during the 1890s to the 1920s. Wheatley used to live with and demanded the manuscripts for the second volume of works. Unfortunately these manuscripts disappeared with Peters never to be recover ed. CRITICAL ANALYSIS Phillis Wheatley's political poems have been largely ignored even though she lived in Boston and was a witness to many events that led to the revolution. Poems such as "To Samuel Quincy, Esq; a Panegyric," "To the King's Most Excellent Majesty," "To t he Right Honorable William, Earl of Dartmouth," "To His Excellency General Washington," and "Liberty and Peace" all describe political events and figures. Each poem dramatizes a decisive moment in America's struggle for independence. Wheatley writes a l ot of political praise poems, which means this, was probably a very important subject to her. Since Wheatley was a domestic female slave she was very bold to compose such commentaries which suggests that maybe an African tradition taught her that politic al praise was the most important to all poets (Robinson, 93). Phillis Wheatley was a minority because of her race and her sex. In the eighteenth century woman writers were the visible minority and black–female writers were non existent. Male critics felt that there were to many female writers and that they wer e a threat to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 50. African Americans During Ww1 America's False Freedoms During World War One, as America continued to grow in numbers, much of the new American population was made up of immigrants. America was still working on the path to grant freedom to all who considered the United States their home. Many immigrants primarily came to America in search of true freedom and to gain opportunities that they otherwise could not have access to in their homeland. World War One; however, made it extremely difficult for some immigrant Americans and African Americans to receive the true freedom that they came in search for. Not only did WWI make it difficult for certain groups to live in America, it also gave rise to contradictions between the language of freedom and the reality of restrictions made on individual freedoms. Immigrants were being treated poorly and protecting the U.S. from the enemy was becoming more important than providing all Americans with the individual freedoms that they had come to the U.S. in search for. On top of that anti–immigration movements were intensifying. The freedom the United States had promised to many, was either being limited or simply not being given. The repercussions of WWI had a larger effect on some immigrant groups than others. One of the groups that was affected the most by WWI in the United States, was the German population. Germany's role in the war made life increasingly difficult for German Americans. During the war, the whole German race was being painted as the enemy. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This indicates that he has an intention to conceal the bad news that his house is haunted. In addition, after water leakage in the basement, he was just trying to deal with it as soon as possible so that he could sell his house as soon as possible instead of telling the buyer. In fact, he had an obligation to disclose such material facts to John, but he did not. Therefore, it was an act of deliberate concealment. • 54. The Characteristics Of Media Feeding Frrenzy By Larry Sabato The media is a citizen's gateway to the world of politics. For the majority of Americans the news is their primary source of information and the substance of that news very often is based on the number of viewers it will draw, not the importance of the story. Basically the media shows you the stories that it wants you to know, but it also shows the stories it wants you to get upset about. A trait that the general media has developed for the past double decades is that of jumping on a story particularly about political figures and going into frenzy for as long as the public's attention span will allow them to. Often times it is because of something a person did wrong or controversially, but that is not always the case as it could be over something very ordinary but just surprising. Media feeding frenzies can sometimes be warranted, and other times they just seem to happen because there's nothing else for them to latch onto at the time. Billygate, Jimmy Carter's "killer rabbit" and Sarah Palin being announced as John McCain's running mate in 2008 are just a few examples of media feeding frenzies. In "Feeding Frenzy" by Larry Sabato he is critical of the characteristics of the media in situations where they openly ridicule and attack a widely known person for some sort of wrongdoing, or past indiscretion. According to Sabato, journalists and the media now fit snugly into their newfound role as gatekeeper, which he says enables them to basically screen people who are fit for ... The legends who have influenced the path in which our ancestors fought hard to obtain in past generations. Booker T. Washington, Rita Dove, Richard Wright, Zora Hurston and Langston Hughes were a few among various highly influential poets during the 1900s. One of the biggest accomplishments of blacks today is that literature has developed from these African American poets. These individuals have set a tone and path to allow writers of any ethnicity to express themselves in various ways. Through poems, plays, novels, and alternative means of presentation, these famous African American poets are still being presented through present work. African American poet, Booker Taliaferro Washington, born in Virginia April 5, 1856 to November 14, was not only an author, but the educator of his time. Washington excelled in education at Hampton and later used the skills to further his aspirations. With these skills he founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute on the Hampton model in the Black Belt of Alabama. Becoming the spokesman for these organizations, Washington was able to convince employers of the Caucasian ethnicity that these programs would keep blacks on the farm to work. In reality, this idea would enable blacks to escape, have goals, and be free. Kokubun Mr. Black 7th Grade World Studies P.2 16 November 2016 How The Germans Influenced Modern Day Slavery Today I will be talking about how Germany influenced slavery, war, peoples' perspective on immigrants, and many more things and how it affected modern day life. I think Germany greatly affected today partly because of Hitler. I think he greatly influenced the world because of his personality. I also think that the German army was very strong making them feared, powerful, and united. I also think that Germany still has lots of power and is still feared today as a torture and powerful country. I think that many people today and maybe even countries think that Germany is a bad country. If you are one of those people, I hope today I can change your mind because Germany is a very intelligent and cool country because without them, our world would be greatly changed. I think Germans influence on slavery and many more things greatly changed people's perspective on immigrant's and ideas. Germanys background is very unique and very engrossing. With Germany being the third largest country in the European Union, following the Boot, France and finally Spain, Germany has a lot of power. (Countries of the World) Germany also had a history of being divided, which means they are not very united but can make strong comebacks. The first factor is due to the profanity, along with the rude and cruel actions displayed throughout the stories which emerge from the side characters that interact in dialogue with the protagonists. The present generation of Southerners are not responsible for the past, and they should not be blindly hated or blamed for it" (De Bois 1166). By stating this, the author is defending the African race by claiming that the punishment for the actions of their ancestors should not be burdened with them. We read that the sons of a black person's master will sometimes want to help rise and benefit the individual. Du Bois claims, "National opinion has enabled this last class to maintain the Negro common schools, and to protect the Negro partially in property, life, and limb" (1166). This tells readers that the African race is beginning to receive their rights, along with having opportunities to access them. During "The Lesson," it is the children who display the majority of the profanity, along with the rude and cruel actions. When they arrive at a toy store on the other side of town, Sylvia, the protagonist, and her friends discover a microscope which spark their interest. Figurative Language In The King Of The Bingo Game Jamaica Kincaid's short story Girl and Ralph Ellison's King of the Bingo Game display prejudices, insecurities, and African Americans' struggle to find their own identity in the mid to late 1900s. In the King of the Bingo Game, an unnamed middle–aged man plays a bingo game that will determine his well–being and the life or death of his wife Laura. • 72. Indian Boy Love Song Analysis The poems "New Orleans" by Joy Harjo and "Indian Boy Love Song (#2) by Sherman Alexie have two very similar themes. Themes are underlying message, or main ideas, basically the theme is the lesson you learned after you read a story, or in this instance a poem. The theme in "New Orleans" is that you should put forth the effort to find out about your culture's history. While the theme of "Indian Boy Love Song(#2) is that you should, try your hardest to become close to your elders, don't be distant. While both themes are focused on their culture, "New Orleans" is actually looking for information on her Creek culture, but "Indian Boy Love Song (#2)" is apologizing about how he's distant from his culture. In the poem "New Orleans" the theme is that to learn more about your culture, you should put forth the effort. To get this message Harjo used compare and contrasting. For example " They caught him in blue rock, said don't talk. I know it wasn't just a horse that went crazy." This is showing development because it's showing how her people got caught, and they attacked any and everything. Another way the author shows this is by saying "I have a memory. It swims deep in blood, a delta in the skin." This shows that her heritage runs deep through her. • 78. Analysis Of Angelou 's I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings The world of literature has been dominated by males throughout most of history; this is due to the fact that women we're thought of as inferior to men. Over the last 100 years women have been proving themselves in this sexist society, especially in the world of literature–poetry, to be more specific. Two names come to mind when thinking of great female poets: Maya Angelou and Emily Dickinson. Even thought both of these women we're outstanding poets, they had quite different styles of writing due to the difference in time periods, experiences, and culture. As time goes by, society is influenced in different ways due to human evolution. This was true for both Maya Angelou and Emily Dickinson. Maya Angelou was born April 4, 1928. This means she was born right in the middle of segregation. This influenced Angelou because she was an African American woman who wrote about freedom for her people. The best example would be her famous novel and poem "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings." The book is about her life struggles and the poem is a metaphor about a bird that seeks freedom. The final stanza of the poem reads "The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom." This excerpt of the poem demonstrates how she yearned for her people to get the freedom they deserved. The comparison of the caged bird and the bird that's free can be seen in many different ways.
