Application Note – Crude Oil Tank Cleaning
Tanks onboard vessels must be cleaned from time to time for
various reasons. One reason is to change the type of product
carried inside a tank. Protocols for entry into confined space are
required as there is a risk of the presence of toxic gases such
as Benzene, H2S, Mercaptans , Hydrocarbons, etc. Referrals
should be made to the MSDS (Marine Safety Data Sheets) and
precautions for toxic gases as listed in ISGOTT.
Entry should not be permitted without
appropriate personal protective
equipment if statutory or recommended
exposure limits are likely to be exceeded.
Checks for toxic gases should be made
prior to entering a tank using appropriate
detector equipment, such as detector
tubes.

Application Note – Confined Space Entry
Confined space refers to an area which is enclosed with limited access
which making it dangerous. An example is the interior of a storage tank,
which workers may enter for maintenance but which is not ordinarily a
habitable space. Hazards in a confined space often include suffocation by
gases which may be present but not identified by visibility or smell.
In September 2012, three men died suffering from the effects of fume
inhalation after falling into a slurry tank on a farm at Hillsborough, County
Down, Ireland.
Had they been wearing a personal gas detector to detect present gases,
an alarm would have given them an indication that the tank was not safe to
enter and death would have been prevented.

Application Note – Hot Works Maintenance
Within ATEX areas it is sometimes necessary that hot works i.e. welding
is required especially during shut downs. Due to its nature, welding is an
ignition source and in normal operation would not be allowed within an
ATEX area. Even though during shut downs great care is taken to ensure
that no explosive gases are present, it is still necessary to monitor for any
unexpected gas clouds.
A typical use for the BM25 would at a gas custody transfer station where
natural gas releases are possible especially during plant scheduled
maintenance.

Application Note – Wastewater treatment plants
When transporting and treating wastewater, the breakdown of organic matter within sewage releases Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S),
which causes a number of environmental issues odour complaints from local residents.
To help control the levels of H2S cultivation, odour control chemicals are added to the sewage. The Odalog is used to monitor the
H2S levels within the pipelines and the effectiveness of chemical dosing. Odalogs are used by 80% of wastewater companies across
the UK, they are chosen because of their superior IP rating and excellent battery life and data capacity.

14. Fixed Gas Detection Equipment
Application Note – Oxygen Depletion
When inert gas is allowed to escape into atmosphere, the oxygen level becomes depleted. Gas alarms are
triggered when the levels of oxygen measured reach set alarm levels. Oxygen levels are continually measured
by fixed gas detectors positioned around the risk area, which provide the central control system with
continuous readings. Alarm levels are set so that indication can be provided to key personnel via the control
panel of a potentially unsafe situation, coupled with alarms/beacons which are usually provided to ensure all
risk areas are covered with a clear signal to personnel.
In many industrial applications, safety is ensured around the clock by a fixed gas
detection system. Hazards can have several origins: the release of toxic gases, oxygen
deficiency or enrichment as well as the presence of combustible gases and vapours.
With most systems having 4-20mA, digital, or relay outputs, a signal can be used to trigger industrial processes if a
situation becomes dangerous. For example starting extractor fans or turning off supply lines. When detected at an early
stage, counter-measures can be initiated to protect personnel, workplaces and plant.
a1-cbiss offer a range of control panels and detectors from the market’s leading manufacturers.

Application Note – Tunnel Construction
During the construction phase of rail tunnels, a build-up of toxic
vapours, exhaust fumes given off by MEWP’s (mobile elevating
work platforms), or the build-up of potentially explosive gas, are the
main sources of hazardous gas which will risk worker safety.
As the application is classed as a confined space, the importance
of continuous gas detection is required to ensure workers safety.
As stipulated by the HSE and the BTS (British tunneling society),
they have specified monitoring of Oxygen (O2), Nitrogen Dioxide
(NO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Nitrogen Oxide (NO), and to
include data logging and reporting software.
a1-cbiss supplied a gas detection system to continuously monitor
for all four gases and log their readings every 60 seconds. The PLC
controller and data logger operator is able to easily download the
data on a weekly basis via a USB key and download the data to
their laptop.

23. Testimonials
“We have recently decided to change from drager tube analysis to Gastec.
The main drive for the change is the competitive price of the Gastec tubes and the next day delivery as standard.
In addition after a trial of the Gastec pump the user found it easier and quicker to use as most of the time the Gastec
pump requires only one pull against 10 strokes on the drager pump”.

Team Leader Process Control Laboratory, Vale Europe Ltd
“a1-cbiss have supplied Ricardo UK with both fixed and portable gas detection. The service and support has been
good, quickly resolving any product issues that were no cause of their own. Overall I would happily contact them
again if and when we have another gas detection requirement”.

Museum application note
The natural history museum’s newest exhibition, the giant squid, called Archie, is 8.62m long and was caught off the
coast of the Falkland Islands in March 2004. The final home for Archie is a specially made acrylic tank filled with a
10% solution of formol-saline as a preservative. The tank was constructed in California, by the people who made the
tanks for Damien Hirsts’ various artworks of animals in formaldehyde. The tank is 9m and 45cm long and stands on
a 1-metre stainless steel stand so that the giant squid can be viewed from any angle. The risk assessment indentified
the possibility of potential formaldehyde leakage, anything above 0.3ppm release to atmosphere is considered a risk
to health, therefore, low level gas detection was installed as a first point of detection for formaldehyde leakage.
a1-cbiss were chosen to supply the gas detection and sampling system. Due to the size of the area and the low
detection levels required, a1-cbiss engineered a solution that included two Innova 1412 Photoacoustic Gas Monitors
which detects formaldehyde down to 0.1ppm as well as their own Mark IV Samplers, which samples from over 70
locations across the museum.
a1-cbiss offers design, engineering, manufacturing, project management, installation and commissioning with all
major projects keeping quality control all in house to ensure trouble free project completion.
Shipping Vessels application note
To satisfy parts of ‘The Merchant Shipping and Fishing Vessels (Health and Safety at Work) (Chemical Agents)
Regulations 2010’, a1-cbiss were chosen by Stena Line to supply multi-gas detectors for each of their vessels.
The detectors had to monitor for CO, CO2, LEL, O2, H2S SO2. It was critical that the gas detectors were easy to
use, offered functions for datalogging recording and reporting software and were fully maintained via service, repair
and calibration.
Captain Andy Humphreys, Safety and Environmental Manager, Stena Line says
“Since the beginning of the project, we are very happy with the close contact support that we received from the sales
and service teams at a1-cbiss, which has ensured that we have bought the most cost effective and suitable solution
to meet the legislation and protect our employees. We chose to use a1-cbiss to service the gas detectors every 6
months as we have a very good relationship with the team there and they are always available to give me the expert
advice I require”.
