Chapter 2
Discussion
9 | P a g e
2.1 What is Soft Skill? :
A soft skill is a personal attribute that supports situational awareness and enhances an
individual's ability to get a job done. The term soft skills is often used as a synonym for
people skills or emotional intelligence.
Examples of soft skills include communication skills, emotional intelligence,
teamwork, adaptability, problem-solving, time management, leadership, and creativity.
Unlike hard skills, which describe a person's technical ability to perform a specifically-
defined task, soft skills are broadly applicable across job titles and industries. It's often
said that while hard skills might get someone an interview, soft skills will help that
person get and keep the job.
Soft skills are important in the workplace and can often make the difference between
success and failure in one's career. Soft skills are also important in everyday life,
helping individuals to build strong personal relationships and navigate social situations
with ease.
2.2 Importance of Soft Skills:
Soft skills play a big role in career success, Employers recognize the importance of soft
skills in the workplace, so it's important to showcase these skills when applying for
jobs. Soft skills show employers a person’s personal attributes and qualities to help
succeed in corporate world.
Here are some reasons why soft skills are important:
1. Effective Communication: Soft skills such as effective communication, active
listening, and empathy are essential in building strong relationships and working
collaboratively with others. Effective communication skills can help individuals to
express their ideas clearly, understand the perspectives of others, and resolve
conflicts peacefully.
2. Better Job Performance: Soft skills such as problem-solving, time management,
and adaptability are critical for job performance. These skills help individuals to
10 | P a g e
prioritize tasks, work efficiently, and adapt to changing situations, which can lead
to better job performance and increased productivity.
3. Strong Leadership: Soft skills such as leadership, teamwork, and motivation are
essential for individuals in leadership positions. Effective leaders must be able to
inspire & motivate their teams, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively
to achieve common goals.
4. Increased Employability: Soft skills are increasingly important in the job market.
Employers are looking for candidates who have a strong combination of hard and
soft skills, and individuals with excellent soft skills are more likely to be hired and
promoted.
5. Personal Growth: Soft skills are not only important for professional success but
also for personal growth. Developing soft skills can help individuals to build better
relationships, improve their communication, and navigate social situations with
ease, which can lead to a more fulfilling and satisfying life.
6. The future workplace will rely on soft skills: Advances in technology have caused
tasks that require hard skills to decline, making soft skills a key differentiator in the
workplace.
As the cost of robots decreases and the performance of artificial intelligence improves,
jobs such as manufacturing line workers, will become automated. Traditional skills like
teamwork, communication and critical thinking will be more important than ever.
7. Customers and clients demand soft skills: Consumers these days have a huge number
of choices of where to buy from, bought about by the internet and smartphones. For
these consumers, convenience and low prices are easy to come by, so customer service
is often what influences the choice to use a particular business. The ability to
communicate at a human level with customers is therefore a vital factor in an
organization’s success.
8. The modern workplace is interpersonal: Skills such as active listening, collaboration,
presenting ideas and communicating with colleagues are all highly valued in the modern
workplace. Strong soft skills ensure a productive, collaborative and healthy work
11 | P a g e
environment, all crucial attributes for organizations in an increasingly competitive
world.
9. Soft skills are hard to automate: Following on from the previous point, soft skills such
as emotional intelligence are hard to automate and unlikely to become automated
anytime soon. This means they're expected to become more desirable in the near future.
However soft skills can be difficult to teach and track improvements on. Companies
such as Virtual Speech are tackling this by using VR as a way to improve soft skills.
In summary, soft skills are essential for success in both personal and professional life.
They enable individuals to interact effectively with others, work collaboratively, and
achieve common goals, making them an indispensable asset in today's world.
2.3 Seven essential Soft Skills:
Based on the qualities of top employees, there are seven essential soft skills. These are
given below:
1. Leadership Skills: Companies want employees who can supervise and direct other
workers. They want employees who can cultivate relationships up, down, and across
the organizational chain. Leaders must assess, motivate, encourage, and discipline
workers and build teams, resolve conflicts, and cultivate the organization’s desired
culture. Understanding how to influence people and accommodate their needs is an
essential element of leadership.
2. Teamwork: Most employees are part of a team/department/division, and even those
who are not on an official team need to collaborate with other employees. An employer
may prefer to work alone, but it’s important to demonstrate that he/she should
understand and appreciate the value of joining forces and working in partnership with
others to accomplish the company’s goals. This shows that an employer possesses
the soft skills necessary to engage in productive collaboration.
3. Communication Skills: Successful communication involves five components.
Verbal communication refers to your ability to speak clearly and concisely. Nonverbal
communication includes the capacity to project positive body language and facial
expressions. Written communication refers to the skillfulness in composing text
12 | P a g e
messages, reports, and other types of documents. Visual communication involves the
ability to relay information using pictures and other visual aids. Active listening should
also be considered a key communication soft skill because it helps to listen and actually
hear what others say. An employer needs to be able to listen to understand how to best
communicate with someone. Without strong listening skills, any communication efforts
will be one-way and probably ineffective.
4. Problem-Solving Skills: Employers value individuals who can identify problems
and find creative solutions. It requires critical thinking, analysis, and the ability to make
sound decisions. Many applicants try to minimize problems because they don’t
understand that companies hire employees to solve problems. Glitches, bumps in the
road, and stumbling blocks are all part of the job and represent learning opportunities.
The ability to use knowledge to find answers to pressing problems and formulate
workable solutions will demonstrate that an employer can handle and excel in job.
Discussing mistakes and what are learned from them is an important part of building
a soft skills resume.
5. Work Ethic: Work ethic is considered a soft skill because it is a personal attribute
that is not necessarily taught in a formal setting but is developed through experience
and personal values. It refers to an individual's attitude towards work, their level of
dedication and commitment, their ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines, and
their overall sense of responsibility towards their work.
Having a strong work ethic is essential in any work environment as it can lead to
increased productivity, improved job satisfaction, and a better reputation among
colleagues and supervisors. Employers often value work ethic as a critical soft skill in
their employees because it is an indicator of reliability, dependability, and a willingness
to work hard to achieve desired results.
6. Adaptability: The ability to adapt to changing circumstances and situations is
essential in today's rapidly evolving work environment. It involves being open-minded,
flexible, and willing to learn new skills. In the 21st century, companies need to make
rapid changes to remain competitive. So, they want workers who can also shift gears or
change direction as needed. So, it’s more important than ever for employees to be able
13 | P a g e
to handle many different tasks and demonstrate a willingness to take on responsibilities
that might lay outside their area of expertise.
7. Interpersonal Skills: This is a broad category of “people skills” and includes
building and maintaining relationships, developing rapport, and using diplomacy. It
also includes giving and receiving constructive criticism, being tolerant and respectful
regarding others' opinions, empathizing with them. This is among the most important
of all the soft skills examples because it is central to building teams with a strong
foundation of trust and accountability.
2.4 How to learn Soft Skills:
Learning soft skills can take some time and effort, but it is definitely worth it. Here are
some ways to learn Soft Skills:
❖ Seek feedback: Ask for feedback from colleagues, supervisors, or mentors to help
identify areas where we need improvement.
❖ Practice: We have to seek out opportunities to practice our soft skills, whether it's
through joining an organization, or participating in team projects.
❖ Observe others: We have to observe people, admire or who are skilled in the soft
skills we want to improve in. Pay attention to how they interact with others and
learn from their behavior.
❖ Read and learn: There are plenty of resources available online and in books that
can help us to learn about specific soft skills and techniques.
❖ Take courses or workshops: There are courses or workshops that teach soft skills,
such as communication, leadership, or conflict resolution.
❖ Use technology: There are plenty of apps and online tools that can helps to practice
and improve soft skills, such as mindfulness or public speaking apps.
14 | P a g e
❖ Be open-minded and willing to learn: Soft skills are not something we can master
overnight, so we have to remain open to feedback and new ideas.
In conclusion, learning soft skills is an ongoing process that requires dedication,
practice, and a willingness to learn and grow. By seeking feedback, practicing,
observing others, reading and learning, taking courses or workshops, using technology,
and being open-minded and willing to learn, anyone can develop and improve their soft
skills. We have to remember that mastering soft skills takes time, but with persistence
and effort, we can become a more effective and successful professional.

  • 9. 9 | P a g e 2.1 What is Soft Skill? : A soft skill is a personal attribute that supports situational awareness and enhances an individual's ability to get a job done. The term soft skills is often used as a synonym for people skills or emotional intelligence. Examples of soft skills include communication skills, emotional intelligence, teamwork, adaptability, problem-solving, time management, leadership, and creativity. Unlike hard skills, which describe a person's technical ability to perform a specifically- defined task, soft skills are broadly applicable across job titles and industries. It's often said that while hard skills might get someone an interview, soft skills will help that person get and keep the job. Soft skills are important in the workplace and can often make the difference between success and failure in one's career. Soft skills are also important in everyday life, helping individuals to build strong personal relationships and navigate social situations with ease. 2.2 Importance of Soft Skills: Soft skills play a big role in career success, Employers recognize the importance of soft skills in the workplace, so it's important to showcase these skills when applying for jobs. Soft skills show employers a person’s personal attributes and qualities to help succeed in corporate world. Here are some reasons why soft skills are important: 1. Effective Communication: Soft skills such as effective communication, active listening, and empathy are essential in building strong relationships and working collaboratively with others. Effective communication skills can help individuals to express their ideas clearly, understand the perspectives of others, and resolve conflicts peacefully. 2. Better Job Performance: Soft skills such as problem-solving, time management, and adaptability are critical for job performance. These skills help individuals to

Strong Leadership: Soft skills such as leadership, teamwork, and motivation are essential for individuals in leadership positions. Effective leaders must be able to inspire & motivate their teams, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively to achieve common goals. 4. Increased Employability: Soft skills are increasingly important in the job market. Employers are looking for candidates who have a strong combination of hard and soft skills, and individuals with excellent soft skills are more likely to be hired and promoted. 5. Personal Growth: Soft skills are not only important for professional success but also for personal growth. Developing soft skills can help individuals to build better relationships, improve their communication, and navigate social situations with ease, which can lead to a more fulfilling and satisfying life. 6. The future workplace will rely on soft skills: Advances in technology have caused tasks that require hard skills to decline, making soft skills a key differentiator in the workplace. As the cost of robots decreases and the performance of artificial intelligence improves, jobs such as manufacturing line workers, will become automated. Traditional skills like teamwork, communication and critical thinking will be more important than ever. 7. Customers and clients demand soft skills: Consumers these days have a huge number of choices of where to buy from, bought about by the internet and smartphones. For these consumers, convenience and low prices are easy to come by, so customer service is often what influences the choice to use a particular business. The ability to communicate at a human level with customers is therefore a vital factor in an organization’s success. 8. The modern workplace is interpersonal: Skills such as active listening, collaboration, presenting ideas and communicating with colleagues are all highly valued in the modern workplace. Strong soft skills ensure a productive, collaborative and healthy work
  • 11. 11 | P a g e environment, all crucial attributes for organizations in an increasingly competitive world. 9. Soft skills are hard to automate: Following on from the previous point, soft skills such as emotional intelligence are hard to automate and unlikely to become automated anytime soon. This means they're expected to become more desirable in the near future. However soft skills can be difficult to teach and track improvements on. Companies such as Virtual Speech are tackling this by using VR as a way to improve soft skills. In summary, soft skills are essential for success in both personal and professional life. They enable individuals to interact effectively with others, work collaboratively, and achieve common goals, making them an indispensable asset in today's world. 2.3 Seven essential Soft Skills: Based on the qualities of top employees, there are seven essential soft skills. These are given below: 1. Leadership Skills: Companies want employees who can supervise and direct other workers. They want employees who can cultivate relationships up, down, and across the organizational chain. Leaders must assess, motivate, encourage, and discipline workers and build teams, resolve conflicts, and cultivate the organization’s desired culture. Understanding how to influence people and accommodate their needs is an essential element of leadership. 2. Teamwork: Most employees are part of a team/department/division, and even those who are not on an official team need to collaborate with other employees. An employer may prefer to work alone, but it’s important to demonstrate that he/she should understand and appreciate the value of joining forces and working in partnership with others to accomplish the company’s goals. This shows that an employer possesses the soft skills necessary to engage in productive collaboration. 3. Communication Skills: Successful communication involves five components. Verbal communication refers to your ability to speak clearly and concisely. Nonverbal communication includes the capacity to project positive body language and facial expressions. Written communication refers to the skillfulness in composing text

Active listening should also be considered a key communication soft skill because it helps to listen and actually hear what others say. An employer needs to be able to listen to understand how to best communicate with someone. Without strong listening skills, any communication efforts will be one-way and probably ineffective. 4. Problem-Solving Skills: Employers value individuals who can identify problems and find creative solutions. It requires critical thinking, analysis, and the ability to make sound decisions. Many applicants try to minimize problems because they don’t understand that companies hire employees to solve problems. Glitches, bumps in the road, and stumbling blocks are all part of the job and represent learning opportunities. The ability to use knowledge to find answers to pressing problems and formulate workable solutions will demonstrate that an employer can handle and excel in job. Discussing mistakes and what are learned from them is an important part of building a soft skills resume. 5. Work Ethic: Work ethic is considered a soft skill because it is a personal attribute that is not necessarily taught in a formal setting but is developed through experience and personal values. It refers to an individual's attitude towards work, their level of dedication and commitment, their ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines, and their overall sense of responsibility towards their work. Having a strong work ethic is essential in any work environment as it can lead to increased productivity, improved job satisfaction, and a better reputation among colleagues and supervisors. Employers often value work ethic as a critical soft skill in their employees because it is an indicator of reliability, dependability, and a willingness to work hard to achieve desired results. 6. Adaptability: The ability to adapt to changing circumstances and situations is essential in today's rapidly evolving work environment. It involves being open-minded, flexible, and willing to learn new skills. In the 21st century, companies need to make rapid changes to remain competitive. So, they want workers who can also shift gears or change direction as needed. So, it’s more important than ever for employees to be able
  • 13. 13 | P a g e to handle many different tasks and demonstrate a willingness to take on responsibilities that might lay outside their area of expertise. 7. Interpersonal Skills: This is a broad category of “people skills” and includes building and maintaining relationships, developing rapport, and using diplomacy. It also includes giving and receiving constructive criticism, being tolerant and respectful regarding others' opinions, empathizing with them. This is among the most important of all the soft skills examples because it is central to building teams with a strong foundation of trust and accountability. 2.4 How to learn Soft Skills: Learning soft skills can take some time and effort, but it is definitely worth it. Here are some ways to learn Soft Skills: ❖ Seek feedback: Ask for feedback from colleagues, supervisors, or mentors to help identify areas where we need improvement. ❖ Practice: We have to seek out opportunities to practice our soft skills, whether it's through joining an organization, or participating in team projects. ❖ Observe others: We have to observe people, admire or who are skilled in the soft skills we want to improve in. • 14. 14 | P a g e ❖ Be open-minded and willing to learn: Soft skills are not something we can master overnight, so we have to remain open to feedback and new ideas. In conclusion, learning soft skills is an ongoing process that requires dedication, practice, and a willingness to learn and grow. By seeking feedback, practicing, observing others, reading and learning, taking courses or workshops, using technology, and being open-minded and willing to learn, anyone can develop and improve their soft skills.
