This document provides guidance for tutors on conducting before reading activities with tutees. It instructs tutors to show the book cover and read the title to the tutee. The tutee is then asked to make predictions about the story based on the title and picture without reading the pages. Tutors should compliment the tutee's predictions and provide assistance if needed to make a prediction relevant to the title and picture. Role playing the before reading activity will help prepare tutees for the upcoming reading passage.

2. Using the Picture and TitleCaptain’s Cat Show your tutee the cover of the book Read the title of the book Ask the tutee to make predictions about what they think the story will be about. Have them make up a story, be sure not to let them read the pages!

3. Predicting Story Content Fifth Grade-”To Tell the Truth” (Lesson 7) Fourth Grade-”The Cat and the Bell” (Lesson 6) By looking at the picture and reading the title make a prediction about the story. Tell your prediction to your partner. Did you both have the same story? Is it okay to have different predictions?

4. Things to Remember It is likely that the prediction will not match the story. Compliment the tutee on his/her ideas! If the tutee makes a prediction that is not relevant to the title or picture it should not be accepted. Assist the tutee if it is hard for them to make a prediction by giving instruction such as: Look at the picture again, What do we see in the picture, and read the title again.
