2. CINEMATOGRAPHY
• Begins with zooming out shot of the yellow screen.
• The first scenes are made up of medium to long shots of Billie singing and
dancing.
• The close ups of Billie’s bruised knees and blood may be seen as
uncomfortable for some, hence adhering to that consistent theme of strange
images.
• Overhead shot of Billie on pink and yellow carpet.
• Long shot in front of a green screen when Billie is feeding someone milk.
• When Billie is shown in a close up wearing snorkeling goggles we are prone to
asking questions, an example of enigma codes, however the next shot leads us
to asking more questions when it is a medium shot of her and floating heads
behind her.
3. EDITING
• The sequence of shots will speed up and the composition will become shorter
as the music speeds up.
• Reverse video is used in the last shot. This shot is a repeat of the first shot and
creates a cyclical structure, as the video starts and ends with the same shot,
except in reverse.
• Throughout the whole video, crosscutting is used to cut from scene to scene
whilst still singing the song. This offers a fun variation while still keeping the
song consistent.
• When Billie is listing the different kinds of rough guys, a sequence of short
takes featuring many different guys is shown, therefore linking to the lyrics
said.
• Computer generated imagery is used to create images of men’s floating heads
in plastic bags filled with water. These images are created using editing
techniques and add to the creepy ambience.
4. SOUND
• The video begins with a dialogue of Billie removing her retainers. The
fact that this action creates a rather disgusting noise which some people
may respond to negatively simply conforms to Billie’s well known
personality as somebody who does not care about what others think.
• Shortly after the music begins with Billie’s monotonous and eerie voice
as well as some steady percussion and snapping of fingers which
becomes increasingly louder as the video goes on.
• Towards the end of the song, Billie is seen singing in a different more
conversational tone and her creepiness is amplified even more through
the lyrics “She’s scared of me”.
5. MISE-EN-SCENE
• Costume: Billie begins with a full yellow costume that features a hoodie and loose pants.
These colors represent happiness which creates a wonderful contrast between the eerie
lyrics of the song. After this, Billie wears an all white outfit that also does not shape her
form in any way. These non-form fitting outfits speak out on Billie’s statement against
conforming to society’s norms. Billie then wears a bright red outfit perhaps to reflect on
the blood that is bizarrely shed throughout the video. Next Billie wears an all blue outfit
which matches the setting she is in front of; a blue pool. She then wears a floral outfit
which is all matching patterns as well. This theme of all solid colored or patterns is unique
and can be seen as a trademark to her personality.
• Lighting: high key or natural lighting is used throughout the majority of the video, until the
end where she is seen in a red light room. The initial bright lighting contrasts the eerie
lyrics whist the red light at the end conforms to the creepy tone of the song.
• Acting: The performance of Billie is acting energetic yet creepy.
• Makeup: Billie does not wear any specifically noticeable makeup, however she does show
blood trickling down her face at one point.
• Props: no props.
• Setting: the setting is first in a studio then in front of a pool then in front of a house then
in a red room.
6. GENRE
• The genre of Bad Guy is pop or electropop.
• The song uses electronic beats as well as her pop lyrics and catchy style
to conform to this genre.
7. NARRATIVE
• The narrative structure follows the form of Billie appearing out of
nowhere then singing whilst performing strange and random activity
then disappearing from the same place she appeared from.
• The purpose of this narrative structure is to continue the theme of Billie
Eilish’s random character.
• This narrative will keep the audience entertained since they would not
have seen anything like it. Therefore classifying it as a form of
entertainment or escapism/diversion, strands of the uses and
gratifications theory.
8. REPRESENTATION
• Since Billie really strays from social norms and expectations, women are
not being represented through her use of image and costume as well as
her behavior.
• Despite this, I do feel that Billie is representing millennials as fun-loving
and out of this world people. She is a prime example of how each
person is different and should embrace those differences rather than run
from them.
• The stereotype of a ‘freak’ or weird person is used with Billie but her
laughter and occasional smiling destroys this stereotype and makes it
clear that stereotypes are now too dated since not everyone is the same.
9. AUDIENCE
• The target audience is any supporter of her genre, electro-pop, as well
as young teenagers all the way to middle aged adults.
• The use of bright and interesting visuals will catch the eyes and maintain
the entertainment of all ages of people.
• The music video is likely to have a shocking affect on its audience
however it will be a positive shocking effect as the mood of the song is
somewhat humorous and up-lifting.
