organization ISO such as ISO 14001:2015, ISO 9001:2015, ISO 22000:2018, and many more. ISO 22000
HACCP was introduced to establish food safety management systems. These standards adhere to the
guidelines under ISO 9001 and might be introduced as a quality management system since we are talking
about food quality. Both the standards are based on high-level structures; however, there are many
differences and similarities between the two systems.
ISO 22000 is the global approach that combines the ISO 9001 Quality Management System approach to
the Food Safety Management Systems and the HACCP ensuring food quality on all the levels of the
global food chain.
ISO 22000 HACCP creates and executes guidelines guaranteeing global food chain safety where HACCP
means ‘Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point System.’ ISO 22000 HACCP sets out global standards
that each organization should follow to co-exist and sustain peacefully maintaining healthy and rich
relationships with its customers, thus increasing consumer reliability. HACCP principles are the ground
basis on which ISO 22000 standards are established.
Both of these standards set out rules and regulations regarding food safety management systems;
however, ISO 22000 and HACCP are different for certifications. An ISO 22000 certification is not legally compulsory for
the companies, and it completely depends on whether the company or organization is willing to get certified for the
same.
On the other hand, HACCP certification is a legal obligation to guarantee food safety to consumers. ISO
22000 involves risk analysis while HACCP follows a penetrative and traditional approach to ensure the
food quality to the consumers.
This system incorporates internationally accepted guidelines providing a raw framework to develop,
analyze, and check the improvement regarding food safety. These standards also incorporate the other
sections of ISO management systems such as ISO 9001 QMS or ISO 14001 EMS, including customer
focus, leadership, people engagement, and many more.
Besides developing a universally accepted food safety policy, ISO 22000 in food safety management
systems includes several other policies like formulating emergency plans, setting targets, strategic
planning involving food safety for consumers, and many more.
Just like ISO 14001 EMS, ISO 22000 HACCP also follows the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle to improve its
sustainability. ISO 22000 also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, thus being an
asset to our guidelines book.
