1. Greece Abstract
Catherine Parks
My time spent in Greece allowed me to expand my knowledge of Greek history, art, and culture. By participating in the KIIS program I was able to travel with other students and also professors from the Kentucky area. The KIIS program did not remain in one place, and traveled to multiple islands as well as Greece’s mainland. This aspect of my trip played a large role in contributing to the amount that I was able to learn. As we traveled to a new destination, my literature and art class would shift the subject material to correspond to the new portion of Greece. This allowed me to learn a wide variety of history, literature, and art that matched the museums, archeological sites, and ancient cities that the group visited. Class periods gave travels a new sense of importance, because I knew the history and significance of each location.
The timing of my trip also contributed to the amount I was able to learn about Greek culture. I was in Athens as demonstrations continually took place, as people spoke out against changes being discussed by the government. Greece is currently facing immense debt issues, and while I was in the country the government was looking to formulate a plan to decrease the nation’s debt. It was interesting to see the reactions of people on the streets, as well as the discussions of government officials seen on the news.
Greece was a beautiful place to visit due to the scenery, but also the people. Interacting with the people gave me an immense respect for the positive outlook and relaxed lifestyle followed by the Greeks. My trip allowed me to become a more global citizen, through an enhanced learning of tradition and culture in Greece. I not only learned about the people of Greece, but also learned more about myself. In Greece I learned the importance of kindness and a simple smile. People throughout the country were incredibly helpful and responsive to any demonstration of kindness or hospitality. This trip also showed me that stepping out of my comfort zone is sometimes the best way to learn. By traveling in a group with others I had never met, I was able to make new friendships that will last a lifetime. My time spent in Greece was an incredible experience that allowed me to develop life skills, discover passions, and enlarge my knowledge of Greece. I would like to thank the Brown Fellows Foundation for the opportunity to explore the world.
