History personal state
1. History is pivotal in helping us to understand our society today, as we must learn from the past to
improve the future. This can be related to my interest in current affairs as the origins of conflict
between ISIL Middle East and the West can be predated back ancient history. My love of history has
stemmed from a younger age when my parents became members of the National Trust and I was
able to see history for the first time. Being a part of the National Trust enabled me to explore a new
way of life that I was previously unaware of from looking at the Victorian to the early medieval eras.
Coupled with being a member of the National Trust, I have also visited Rome, Pompeii and
Herculaneum which has deepened my passion for history as well as providing a wider chronological
framework to my understanding outside the confines of the school curriculum. If I was unable to
visit these historic landmarks I do not think that history would of arguably came to life for me as
much as it has by experiencing history first time. Higher education is the right step for me as it will
allow me to explore new areas in history and expand my understanding as a historian.
My main interests are ancient history reading as I am very intrigued in documentaries on ancient
history such as Pharaohs of Egypt, on the History Channel supported by studying Medicine through
Time at GCSE level have intensified my fascination with ancient history and how those eras have
help to mould the society that we know today. Visiting historical cities such as Rome and seeing
world famous landmarks such as the Coliseum has made the concept of history more real and vivid
as I have been able to identify the history behind the people that lived in that era through exploring
the cities and seeing historical sites. Whilst on my trip to Pompeii I realised how much the Roman
Era has influenced the way our society is today for example, in developing sanitation.
As I have matured as a student, I have developed an interest in politics which has come from
watching various television shows with my parents such as ‘The Andrew Marr Show’ which has
enabled me to understand global current affairs. My Granddad has been a part of his local Labour
Party for over 50 years, so he often educates me on his political views. Having an interest in current
affairs has helped to develop my understanding in modern political history.
Studying Media at A-level has developed skills such as time management due to having to meet
deadlines, research skills and helped me to structure coherent and clear essays. Studying Biology at
A level has helped me develop skills in handling data and data analysis.
My past skills and experiences in my history will improve my future. I have Duke of Edinburgh bronze
award which has gave me skill such as team work which have allowed me to become the committed
individual that I am. Duke of Edinburgh award has strengthened my ability to plan and use time.
