1. Thriller Sub Genre Homework
1) Action Thriller
An action thriller would be one to show violent displays of action and
danger. This meaning the use of weapons, such as guns, knives
explosions, armies, swords etc. To determine an action thriller the
use of dialogue from the actors is very important. The actors can tell
the audience what is going on as well and push the story onward. The
general plot for an action thriller would be one of a hero trying to
stop a villain from committing a crime that will have major impacts on
the rest of the world. Some of the conventions used would be to have
the fate of the hero and possibly the world counted down in seconds
and have the hero save the day on the last second. Some of the
techniques used in creating an action thriller would be the use of
close ups, intense music, vfx including explosions, mise en scene of a
threatening area, and quick cuts to create suspense for the viewer.

3. 2) Science Fiction Thrillers
Sci Fi Thrillers are a combination of what is real and not real.
Filmmakers around the world have use vfx to create unrealistic
creatures to use in their films to tell a story of a parrell universe
where these creatures or "things" exists. Sci Fi thrillers use
thoughts and ideas of the future and can be put up on the big screen.
The conventions of Sci Fi films often use the ideas of the future as a
base to build the story off, or they can go back and use vfx to create
unrealistic creatures for the film.

5. 3) Crime Thrillers
Crime thrillers are much like the action thrillers I discussed
earlier. These films often include weapons to show as a convention to
the audience. Crime thrillers often take the path of showing the
audience a crime and then having a detective go into the crime and try
to solve it. This could link well to mystery thrillers. As the
detective uncovers more of the crime the scale of the offence grows as
the film progresses. This not only pushes the story along but also
create suspense for the audience. Some crime thrillers show from the
perspective of the criminal or from the law. Some crime thrillers show
from both. The techniques used in these films include, quick cuts,
tracking and close up shots, intense soundtrack, and a mise en scene
to show the audience that this is a crime thriller.
Some Examples:
7. Adventure thrillers are based mainly on an exploration,
rescuing, or adventure around a certain subject. Mise en scene
plays a huge role in telling the story of an adventure thriller
due to how the audience can determine based on stereotypes about
what will happen next. Adventure thrillers also use a lot of
weapons and dangerous scenes in order to create suspense.
8. 5) Mystery Thrillers
Mystery Thrillers link very well with all the other sub-genres
of thrillers and can work with anyone, however they work very
well with "crime thrillers." Mystery thrillers can use weapons
and the sense of the "unknown" to provoke suspense in the
audience's feelings. Mystery thrillers work so well with crime
due to the fact of crime often being a mystery as to "who did
it?" Camera shots can be close-ups and lots of shot-reverse-shot
when confronting a mysterious character. Creepy music, props
like weapons and knives, mise en scene in abandoned areas or
scary scenarios can build tension within the audiences minds.
Some Examples:
10. Drama Thrillers can often tie into mystery and crime thrillers
as the drama can come out of either the mystery or the crime.
Drama thrillers often include a shortlist of main characters to
try not to confuse the audience with multiple characters'
stories. Drama thrillers can also often go to the extreme by
having the death of a main character in order to stir more drama
and therefore push the story along. Some of this drama can also
come out of romance and then turn south and become violent.
Conventions used could include, weapons, mise en scene,
relatable scenarios for the audience to relate to, and dark
imagery.
