Journal of Nursing Scholarship, 52(5), 536- 543.

Editor's Notes

  1. Concerning certification description, the certification specifically tests neonatal nurses registered in the US and Canada with a minimum of two years specialty experience in attending to critically ill patients in intensive care units. Regarding the cost of application, $275 is testing fee and $50 is non-refundable registration fee. Incomplete registrations are charged $30 for reprocessing. Regarding requirements prior to certification, the registered nurse has to have worked for a minimum of 2000 hours. Specialty experience can include experience in working in direct patient care, administration, research, or education.
  2. Concerning the exam description, the 175 questions comprise 25 questions that are unscored and gather statistical information on how to improve future examinations. Moreover, the exam results are released by electronic mail within 21 days after exam sitting. Concerning renewal, the nurses have to upload continued earned education to their portal as developed in the education plan.
  3. Regarding why the certification was selected, many nurses are not aware of the additional advantages that certification comes along with. Therefore, they end up committing medical errors in their nursing practice. Concerning why many nurses are not knowledgeable about the certification, nursing profession attracts few individuals. Therefore, the number of registered nurses is very low and many of them feel no need to get accreditation because their services are highly demanded.
  4. Concerning the key points, the scholarly article uses the Perceived value certification tool to determine significance of getting accreditation. After thorough analysis of gathered data, the article concludes that certification positively influences the productivity and quality of services rendered by the certified nurses. Moreover, certified nurses are highly valued and recognized by employers and patients. Consequently, certified nurses attain high levels of self-fulfillment and are often paid higher salaries.
  5. Concerning the improved quality of care, the nurses are able to deliver high quality services with minimal errors hence improving patient safety and patient lives concurrently.
  6. Regarding RNC-NIC certification, the National Certification Corporation is the organization mandated to test and accredit nurses with the RNC-NIC certification. The certification serves to ensure that the knowledge and skills of practicing nurses are top notch and the nurses are kept up to date with changes in their area of practice.
  7. Concerning what was learned, the primary goal of nurses is to improve patients’ lives and safety by rendering quality services. Through certification, a nurse’s skills and knowledge are tested and updated continuously. Ultimately, nurses are able to render enhanced quality services.
