Editor's Notes

  1. I will discuss the cause of a broken home. As well as how living up in a broken home can effect a child's life all the way into his/her adult years. I also will be discussing different ways children can deal with their emotions outside of the home.
  2. The leading cause of divorce is lack of communication, when communication fails you can not have an effective relationship. Illness, whether it is a death of a family member or a deadly illness of someone in the immediate family can cause constant arguing between couples. Abuse whether it is sexual, emotional, drugs, alcohol or excessive gambling. One partner might seem to actively be harsh on another physically or just by using harsh language. Things with money tend to cause arguments and disagreements between couples. One partner may have cheated on the other which is an unforgivable mistake that causes a big hole in a relationship.
  3. Which leaves about a million American children suffer from the divorce of their parents. Blame themselves for the break-up, blame themselves for not being able to stop it from happening. If divorce is sudden may blame the parent who left. If in house of constant bickering the blame often shifts from parent to parent everyday. Become sad that they are either motherless or fatherless. Often sad that life will never be the same. Get angry that one parent could leave them for whatever reason, feeling of betrayal. May get mad because feel like a victim. Signs of anger: not eating, acting rebellious, not sleeping well, changing study habits, hanging out with new people (bad influences), experimenting with tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. Common to fear the unknown of what is coming next, will your life be the same? Often children try tell themselves that they don’t really care and do not wanna show anyone how much it hurts. Denial is a way to ease the pain. Find it hard to trust others in your adult life, typically men if your father left and women if your mother left. In adult life may find it hard to have good healthy relationships particulary romantic relationships because you can not trust properly, fear long term relationships, trouble making adjustments. Finally once gone through different stages will reach the stage of acceptance. It is important that they face their feelings in a healthy way.
  4. Mood swings that parents exhibit may confuse the child and make them insecure. Inconsistent care by parent can lead to a child that has to grow up quickly and assume adult responsibilities. Rebel and give up trying to do well in school or life. Figue if heir parents do not care about them then why should they? Children in these situations may be withdrawn and have trouble bonding with others. Blame themselves for family’s problems and that it is their responsibility to conceal the problem. Find it normal when it comes to using substances. Know that parents drink too much but over time, the child may not know what other families are like. Adapt incorrect ways to handle stress because of parents example. Children of alcoholics or drug abusers often develop an inner strenght that helps them get through tough times at home.
  5. Can either be inflicted on them by their mother or father. And can occurs at moments of great stress. Many who abuse were abused themselves as children. Child abuse is fairly high (neglect). Causes people to abuse love ones close to them is alcoholism, drug abuse, being a single parent, lack of education, poverty.
  6. In 2002, 20 million children lived in a household with only mother or father. more than 1/4 of children in the United States. Single-parent families are challenged with money because the only have one incompe coming in. Least likely to have health insurance coverage for their children.
  7. In 2007 nearly 29 million families live with low incomes. Utility shut off, no health care, running out of food. Not able to make friends as easily due to the constant moving. Schools where they attend does not have correct funds to properly teach students such as a school in the suburbs. Parents do not have money to give them things that they want, that all the kids at school have.
  8. Know that they are different than those around them and are scared that no one will appreciate them for who they are. Children thrive on stability, uncertainty and emotional turmoil can increase the chance of psychological pitfalls.
  9. Playing sports can teach teamwork, responsibility, character and high self-esteem. Exercising is a good way to get rid of tension or angry feelings in a positive way. Drawing pictures can be a easier way for children to express how they truly feel inside. Many children enjoy writing/illustrating stories. Can help the children put the current events in their lives in perspective. Allow them to experience good things in the past and the many years they have ahead of them to have fun and happy times with their families.
  10. It is important that kids know how to compete so they know how to react in life, because competition is in every aspect of our society (classroom, work force) In life you will work as part of a team, family, corporation it is an important skill to have to learn how to deal with different personalities and abilities. It also teaches them to look to others for help. Allows children to interact with kids their own age and allows them to make long lasting friendships throughout difficult times in their lives. Obesity is a big issue in today’s society with practices and games, kids stay active instead of sitting in front of the tv. Children in sports are less likely to abuse illegal substances. Helps keep them focused on their goals and free from dangerous distractions. Sports is much more then about who is more athletic it is about strategy, plays. Thinking ahead, problem solving. Athletics creates a feeling of accomplishment, of feeling strong and capable .

  13. Develops skills in communication, negotiation, refusal, empathy, cooperation and teamwork and advocacy. Learn different ways to communicate with different people. Involve children to creatively and critically examine a problem and make a decision that not only benefits themselves but others and their environment. Hae a general concenses. learn the different roles each child played. Develops skills that will manage feelings and manage stress. (internal motivation, Learn to deal with others who are all different and diverse. How to handle disappointment when things don’t go exactly the way you’d like. (when you lose), how to handle that and not be angry, not to disappointed in one’s self and be able to move on to the next opportunity. Learning to take direction is very important because it enables children to learn how to work well with others.
  14. Communicate effectively with coaches and teammates, in order to understand the team’s vision or objectives. Display respect for coaches, teammates, opponents, and officials Is able to take responsibility of one’s own actions and not place blame on others. Such as, solving performance-related problems, or resolving conflicts among teemmates.
  15. There is no I in Team. If everyone does their job well, it increases what the team can accomplish. Important to know that great things can happen if individuals master the fundamentals and work together as one unit. Each person must be dedicated to the whole team and be willing to act unselfishly.
  16. Those who emphasize sportsmanship see winning as just another goal. Help athletes take pride in their accomplishments and improving skills. So they see themselves as winners. Encourage kids to play fair, no cheating, no bullying on the field and help an opponent up when their down.
  17. Can be applied to sports teams, school groups and other contexts. Focuses to bring out the best in a team to ensure self-development, positive communication, leadership skills and ability to work closely together as a team to problem solve.
  18. About $1 billion in full and partial scholarships are awarded each year by the NCAA. Increases knowledge about the world, different cultures, customs and habits of eople from all over the world. Enhancing respect for rules and regulations. Increases self-confidence, if you have confidence on your side oyu are motivated to give your best. It is a way to get out of the bad environment that they grew up in and they are not subject to poverty and misery anymore. Motivated to do better at school to seek a place for themselves in college. Decreases depression, a good stress buster. Doing an activity that you enjoy and gives a good workout and gets you in a good mood can not be a bad thing. And brings you to a peace of mind and allows to concentrate on schoolwork and such.
  19. Make sure that you are eating for the right reasons, not for the promise of looking better in clothes. Make a commitment to eat foods that boost your energy level and keep your system running smoothly. If you do not have an adequate amount of sleep you may be less productive, less mentally sharp, more prone to the effects of stress. Make sure you have eight hours to let your body restore itself at night. Avoid putting unhealthy substances into body (nicotine, excess alcohol, and excessive caffeine) find healthy ways to manage stress Creates feeling of accomplishment, happiness and feel good about yourself.
  20. Exercise is a natural part of life, even though in today’s word we have to consciously include it in our daily routine. Historically it was built into daily life, as regular hours of physical work or soldiering. Which is now considered a form of exercise, walking, was originally a form of transportation.
  21. Regular physical activity can help control blood lipid abnormalities, diabetes and obesity. Aerobic physical activity can help reduce blood pressure. Aerobic activities help the heart by making it work more efficiently during exercise and at rest as well as increase endurance. To help the heart, lungs and circulation for at least 30 minutes everyday of the week, make sure it is a part of your regular routine. The 1996 Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity also suggests that active people have a lower risk for stroke.
  22. When compared with active children, weigh more, have higher blood pressure and lower levels of heart-protective high-density lipoproteins. In 2005 Youth Risk Factor Surveillance Study indicates that 9.6 percent of youth don’t engage in moderate or vigorous physical activity. Tracks fitness among 9.7 million people between ages 6-17 show that children are getting slower in endurance running and weaker.
  23. Attended physical education classes daily, 5 days in an average week when they were in school.
  24. Does not stimulate the brain as well as physical activity because physical activity works the different parts of the brain. Our society is based on the fastest and easiest way to do things (aka lazy). Which is a real health crisis.
  25. Mood is corespondent to how someone feels, therefor that determines someone's happiness in life and their mentality. This is good to have increased because children will be able to focus on better things that will in fact make their lives happier and healthier.
  26. Extreme increase since years such as 2001, the most obese children are children from the ages of 6-11 years old. Factors http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/full/303/3/242?ijkey=ImvVL7s53Zyps&keytype=ref&siteid=amajnls
  27. As a member of society it is important that you give back to those around you to contribrute to the common good. There is always local organization that need an extra pair of helping hands. Gives you a pleasant feeling of connectedness and the satisfaction of trying to make the world a better place. At least your trying to make the world better, by helping out those who may not of had it as well off.
  28. Right to Play uses sport and play programs to improve health, build life skills, and foster peace for children and communities affected by war, poverty, and disease. Supported by an international team of top athletes from over 40 countries. Right to Play has projects in more than 23 countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The program targets the most marginalized children including girls, the disabled, children affected by HIV and AIDS, street children, former child combatants, and refugees. When kids play the world wins.
