3. Statistics
In 2012, over 10,300 fatalities were
caused by instances of drunk driving.
This figure marked an increase of close
to 5 percent from the previous year. In
2011, the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration revealed that a drunkdriving-related injury occurs every 90
seconds, and that drunk driving in the
United States is responsible for nearly 28
deaths per day. Additionally, statistics
indicate that one in three people will
somehow be involved in a crash related
to drunk driving in their lifetime.
4. Conclusion
The most common offenders are young
people: 23.4 percent of drunk drivers are in
their early twenties, and the majority are
male. Drunk driving is also expensive, costing
the United States approximately $132 billion
annually, translating to a yearly cost of
around $500 per adult. Organizations such as
MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), the
National Commission Against Drunk Driving,
and the International Drunk Driving
Prevention Association are constantly
working to reduce these statistics and make
roads safer for the community.
