Gun control
1. Gun Control
In the peer review article titled Debate: Gun Control in the United States, Dr. Kates states,
“There are no studies supporting the fear that gun ownership would increase the likelihood of ordinary,
law-abiding citizens to commit murder. Rather, studies suggest [13] that individuals who are likely to
commit murder, do so in the course of long criminal careers consisting primarily of nonviolent
crimes...”. In another peer edited article title On gun control the editor makes the statement, “The rate
of gun violence, homicides, and suicides in the United States is declining and has declined for a
number of years in spite of the fact that more than 250 million guns are personally owned in the United
States by more than 50 million people.” That editor also bring into play that over four hundred percent
more of children under the age of 15 die of drowning rather than by a gun accident, but people are
protesting swimming pool or lake control. I agree with these writers one hundred percent. It's a fact that
in the “conceal and carry” states that rapes have decreased by 5%, murders by 8.5%, assaults by7 %,
and robbery by 3%. Maybe crime rate has increased, but there isn't any evidence at all that this law has
been the cause of that. I have also heard the argument that teen suicide is at a high right now and
approving gun laws would only increase it, but let me tell you something. Teens who are going to
commit suicide, will do it with or without a gun. Just like criminals will commit crime whether or not
they have access to a legal gun or not. THEY ARE CRIMINALS! They break the law. That's what they
do. Telling a criminal that they can't have a gun is not going to stop him/her. They've gotten access to
illegal guns all of these years and banning guns wouldn't keep them from doing it now. So, on the other
hand, why don't we let the civilians of the united states have the opportunity to protect themselves. I
can agree that permitting a gun should not be easy. There should be multiple tests, drills, and practice
involved before a person should be allowed access to a weapon. Frankly, as a college student in a town
that I'm unfamiliar with, I am often afraid for my life. In the article Guns and Gun threats at college,
there is information stating that 1.6% of college students are threatened with a gun. I work in a
2. Domestic Violence Shelter. That alone is a scary job. I'm the person that stands between a victim and
the abuser. Also, I work until midnight and have to walk through the parking lot back to my dorm in the
dark. So tell me, If I was your daughter, wife, or even close friend, would you want me in those
situations unable to protect myself? Crime will happen, whether we want it to or not. The one thing we
can control is, how we prepare for it.
