Dual Coding Theory By Jared
What is the Dual Learning Theory? One of many theories on human cognition, Allan Paivio developed this theory in the 1970s. In the theory humans process information in two different ways Visually- processes events and images(i.e. pictures and movies) Verbally –process linguistic information(i.e. speeches and writing)
Allan Paivio Was born on March 29,1925 in Thunder Bay, Ontario. In 1959 he received his PH.D. in psychology from the McGill University. From 1963 until he retired he taught at the University of Western Ontario.
Key Point of the Theory There are three way to process information according to Paivio- Representational- verbal and nonverbal is directly influenced. Referential-the verbal system is activated by the visual communication form or vise-versa. Associative-text and images can influence a mental trigger.
Classroom Implications:The Teacher Under this learning theory the teacher lectures the class while showing pictures or videos of the topic of discussion. A way teachers can implement technology into this learning theory is by showing a power point presentation. Within the presentation there should be many different pictures and videos to go along with the lesson. By showing images along with a lecture the students should be able to maxims learning potential.
Classroom Implications:The Student Under this theory of learning the student actively listens to a lecture while views images and videos about the lesson. Technology can play a vital part in this theory of learning by having students either look up videos and images pertaining to the lesson. Or having the images already prepared for the students to view.
Use in my own classroom This theory is one that many teachers knowingly or not incorporate into their lesson plans. Power Point presentations have become widely used in many different classrooms and the majority of power point slide presentations included images. By including these images along with a lecture a teacher is partaking in the dual-coding theory. I would use this theory of learning within my own classroom. I would have students either look up images and videos that pertain to my lecture before hand, or have the images already presentation in a power point slide.
