KEY POINTS
• PPM is increasingly becoming a critical component for driving innovation
Increasingly, product development leaders recognize the need for better business/innovation alignment, resource utilization and reduced time-to-market
Our ultimate goal is to help our customers maximize their return on innovation and in doing so contribute to the sales and profits from new products
This presentation is an initial overview of the most common innovation challenges and takes a closer look at the leading solution CA offers to address these issues.
So what is New Product Development?
Some companies call New Product Development Research & Development or Product Development or just Engineering. But they all mean the same thing – the process of coming up with the ideas for products, creating them and then launching them into the marketplace.
The process for NPD can be summed up as five high-level steps: 1) coming up with the overall ideas and strategy for what products you want to make 2) figuring out the designs and what the product should do 3) actually developing the product 4) producing the product and finally 5) launching the product with marketing and sales.
When we talk about the “product” in New Product Development, it should be noted that not all products are things you can touch and feel. While many people think about products as something you can buy at a local store, like a cell phone or soda, many other products are things that you can’t touch, like a home loan product form a local bank or a video game with its bits and bytes on a CD-ROM.
We can think of the product innovation process in terms of three distinct disciplines:
Business leaders are responsible for establishing the business strategy, setting targets and DECIDING where to compete, which customers are to be served, what the revenue and profit targets should be and the products and services that are needed.
Based on this direction, product leaders then DEFINE the products needed to support the business strategy. They do this through pure research, ideas captured from customers, employees and partners and analysis of customer requirements.
These product roadmaps and requirements drive the DELIVERY of new products and services that require the management of complex cross-functional New Product Development and Introduction projects that involve multiple projects, cross-functional resources, and countless project documents.
Callouts describe needs of each role.
