Adipic Acid
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1. HISTORY AND GENERAL INFORMATION ON ADIPIC
ACID 1. History on The Production Adipic acid is an important organic chemical raw material. In
China, it is used as raw material in the production of Nylon 6/6 salt, polyurethane, plasticizers,
high–grade lubricants and food additives. With the rapid growth of development, the application of
adipic acid keeps expanding. The production of adipic acid is controlled in the hands of
multinationals. An American chemical company (DuPont) is the biggest supplier in the world. On
2004, total capacity of adipic acid in the world was recorded to be as much as 2.74 million tons and
Du Pont alone caters about 1.1 million tons which is almost ... Show more content on

Currently in Malaysia, it is not producing or manufacturing any adipic acid but they only become
the supplier for the local industries. For this matter, Malaysia should build at least one manufacturer
plant of adipic acid to decrease the import of the adipic acid from other countries. There are not
many adipic acid plants in the world and therefore local manufacturer should grab this opportunity
and not just depending on outside sources. This would make Malaysia one of the largest productions
of adipic acid in the world. 2. General Description Generally, adipic acid has a structure of Carbon 6
straight–chain with two carboxylic acid (–COOH) groups. Due to its long aliphatic chain, it is
slightly soluble in water, alcohol and acetone. Adipic acid can also be called as 1,4–
butanedicarboxylic acid, 1,6–hexanedioic acid, adipinic acid, acifloctin, acinetten,
octafluorohexanedioic acid as well as hexanedioic acid. It is expected to have a chemical formula of
C6H10O4 and a structural formula of HOOC(CH2)4COOH with a total molecular weight of 146.14
gmol–1. Figure 1.2 is the structures of adipic acid: Figure 1.2: Molecular structure of adipic acid
Commercial adipic acid is one of the purest chemicals produced on a large scale (99.8%) because of
the extreme sensitivity of polyamide synthesis to impurities. Typical impurities include

Essay On South Floria
South Florida's ascendancy to the epicenter of the cruise industry began long before the modern
cruise lines were born. Early in the twentieth century, a group of daring visionaries and
entrepreneurs began to dream of expanding the local business community and creating new
industries to take advantage of Florida's climate with its sunshine and warmth. Chief among these
businesses they envisioned a winter tourism trade but to realize this dream they would require a
strong transportation infrastructure.
The coastal shipping trade along the United States' East Coast helped to bring the first visitors to
Florida spurred on by the growing railroad empires developed by Henry Flagler and Henry B. Plant.
By the 1890s, these railroad tycoons ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then in 1913, the Plant Line, now owned by Flagler's Peninsular & Occidental Steamship Company
(P&O), decided to send its new 3,786–ton steamer the ss Evangeline on winter pleasure cruises.
But, instead of sailing from the new ports, she cruised from Key West calling at Panama, Jamaica,
and Cuba. The following winter the cruises were repeated but this time sailing from Jacksonville.
All the remained was to link these new cruise efforts with the emerging South Florida ports.
After World War I, a flourishing trade developed with steamers such as the 1,700 gross ton ss City
of Miami and the 3,200 gross ton ss Northland, maintaining overnight runs between Miami and
Havana. However, sensing that the ports still lacked a proper infrastructure to maintain the shipping
industry, the first of many efforts began to improve the facilities. In Miami, a US$3 million project
was undertaken in 1925 to dredge and widen the channel. Similarly, to the north, the Mayor of
Hollywood was the driving force for a US$6 million project to deepen the harbor inlet, widen the
turning basin and build modern 35–foot piers at Bay Mable. Completed early in 1928, it is said that
more than 85 percent of the residents of Broward County turned out to witness the dedication of
their new port. At the same time, local women's groups led successful efforts to replace the
unpopular Bay Mable Harbor name which what they thought would be a

The United States and the Soviet Union were fighting against each other; the Cold War was
separated into three groups (Jerylin Watson). The nation's economy is a very difficult balancing act.
Cold War confrontations nearly always conducted through surrogates or economic pressure (David
Painter). This is what happened when the tensions of the Cold War affected the United States and
the world (Robert H. Dugger). The United States became the global consumer of last resort for
Germany, Japan, USSR, and China.
The Cold War began after World War II which had two main enemies which were the United States
and the Soviet Union. "The Cold War," got its name, began when the United States and the ... Show

An American U–2 reconnaissance airplane was shot down over the Soviet Union. American Central
Intelligence Agency had provided training for exiles. However, the United States failed to send
military planes to protect the Soviet Union from the invasion. The Cuban's missile crisis easily
could have resulted in a nuclear war. American's felt especially threatened, with those missiles just
one hundred fifty kilometers from the Florida coast. A major change in the Cold War would take
peace in nineteen eighty–five when Mikhail Gorbachev became the leader of the Soviet Union. The
Cold War years were also the time of the "Space Race" – when the United States and the Soviet
Union competed in space exploration (Jerilyn Watson).
Keeping a nation's economy going is a very difficult balancing act. Situations where economies
were hurt by new laws which were completely in the hands of the countries government. The
actions Russia had taken with the Ukraine's have caused the European Union to put sanction on
Russia. The country usually exports 45 million GPD of food and drink to Russia but 22 million
GPD was stopped by sanctions. This was a huge loss in revenue and had for reaching effects, the
normal trade of these countries. World War II created many issues on a worldwide scale; two
different forms of government were fighting for influence. This created a divide between communist
countries and democratic countries which set up the Cold War.

The Red Room: A Short Story
The humid evening breeze ruffles the white silk curtains, which makes it difficult to light the
candles. But, after six stubborn flames decide to materialize on the black wicks, the threatening
wind subsides, and she is ready to begin.
In the stillness of the red room, the wild seventh flame flickers and makes her way to the underneath
of the thick bed, reaching and searching.
Fingers settle. A wooden lettered board. A wooden teared pointer. The box is set on the table in the
middle of the auburn glow. In this reddish tint, she carefully places the tear with both hands on the
board's center. She closes her eyes. All is quiet, as the seventh flame becomes part of the stillness,
waiting for movement in the darkness.

They didn't care. Despite my efforts to be welcoming, I was cast the role some ill–mannered
redheaded pariah. I spent thousands of Henry's money to look my best, to wear the most beautiful
dresses, and no one cared. I was made a fool. The last party Henry hosted took place on a yacht, and
I almost killed everyone. In my efforts to make the party last longer, to maybe finally get a chance
to have a chat with the beautiful women in their gowns, I caused the party to get caught in a storm.
We almost didn't make it out alive. They were furious; he was furious.

We had spent our honeymoon a few years back in St. Augustine, an old, small remote Spanish–style

A playground for the rich, complete with the wired electricity technologies of Henry's friend,
Thomas Edison, and the mosaics and stained glass murals of Louis C. Tiffany. Built in the Spanish
Renaissance Revival Style, the Ponce de León Hotel is seemingly the ideal getaway during the
brutal cold winter. Currently, The Ponce is one of the nation's most exclusive and extravagant
hotels; the wealthy pay significant sums to stay here for the winter season. It is my current home,
my current palace, my current Hell. Oh, Nicholas, my love, why do you not answer

P1– Describe the travel and tourism component industries and provide examples of domestic,
inbound and outbound organisations within them.
There are three types of tourism which is domestic, inbound and outbound tourism.
Domestic tourism
When a tourist travels around the same country, as they live in. For example when you live in
London and decide to go for a tour in the palace of Westminster, then you are a domestic tourism. A
domestic tourism traveller does not have to book a place to stay because they can go home on the
day they went to visit.
Inbound tourism
Travelling around the UK from another country. The tourist comes from another different country.
For example, Joseph is going to visit the UK for his holiday but he lives ... Show more content on

Other roads are normal local roads linking to other local places such as Hayes to Uxbridge. This
would be used by some tourists who want to discover local areas and wanted to travel to another
local city or places.
Rail
Network rail operates and owns the national rail network in UK. People or tourists can travel from
different country by trains, such as Euro star which operates UK to France. This shows that you can
travel to some certain countries by train; it is cheaper than other ports and inbound and outbound
tourist would use euro stars. There are city trains such as virgin trains
(http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/) which link London to other major cities such as Manchester and
Birmingham; the cost depends on the destination. This train would be mostly used by domestic
tourist. On the other hand, there're London underground (http://www.tfl.gov.uk/) which operates
London to different and larger parts of London such as Northolt, leisure square, Oxford Street,
Marbella arch, Luton, Modern, Croydon etc. however it can be very busy in some times due to the
works times and etc. inbound and domestic tourists would use the underground because its faster
and it's a nice experience to travel underground trains.

The beginnings and ends of what we choose to call centuries are almost invariably years of little
significance. But there is little agreement over when the twentieth century c.e. arrived, and there
were several points both before the year 2000 (the collapse of the Soviet Union, the reunification of
Germany, the surge of globalization from the mid–1990s) and afterward (9/11, or the global
recession of 2008) when one could quite plausibly argue that a new era had begun. A compelling
case can be made for viewing the decades of the global scramble for colonies after 1870 as a
predictable culmination of the long nineteenth century, which was ushered in by the industrial and
political revolutions of the late 1700s. But at the same time, without serious attention to the
processes and misguided policies that led to decades of agrarian and industrial depression from the
late 1860s to the 1890s, as well as the social tensions and political rivalries that generated and were
in turn fed by imperialist expansionism, one cannot begin to comprehend the causes and
consequences of the Great War that began in 1914. That conflict determined the contours of the
twentieth century in myriad ways. On the one hand, the war set in motion transformative processes
that were clearly major departures from those that defined the nineteenth–century world order. On
the other, it perversely unleashed forces

Economic Impact Analysis on a High–Speed Railway System for Central Florida
Introduction
High–speed railway (HRL) systems have been used primarily over in such countries as Japan since
1964 and France since 1984. Recently the United States has generated interest in the high–speed
railway as well. The proposed system would stretch from Miami through Orlando and end in the St.
Petersburg/Tampa area. With bullet trains operating at top speeds of 220 miles an hour, the express
travel time from downtown Miami to Orlando would take approximately 2.5 hours. Intercity
travelers (trips between metropolitan regions) along with longer–distance commuters would enjoy

median home price increased by approximately 17 percent in 2004 yet is still around $170,000 – far
below that of most MSAs. Among more than 300 U.S. urban areas, the regional cost of living
remains about 6 percent lower than the average. (Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, 2004)

Orlando
The population area of Orlando experienced a 2.62 percent growth rate from 1998 to 2003. The
population estimate for 2004 was 1.84 million people and, according to the Metro Orlando
Economic Development Commission, Metro Orlando is expected to rank first in the nation in terms
of total employment growth and population growth through 2008. Between 2000 and 2010,
population is expected to grow by 21 percent, whereas employment is expected to grow by 22.1
percent. Furthermore, Metro Orlando is projected to be among the nation's fastest–growing regions
throughout this decade.
The Orlando population is young, diverse and well–educated, with a median age of 35. The
community's labor force exceeds 1,000,000 and boasts a 48.8% employment rate. As of 2004, the
Orlando MSA median household effective buying income was $39,285, as compared to the state
average of $36,599 and the national average of $38,035.

Henry Flagler
Henry Flagler was an American capitalist, entrepreneur and industrialist born in Hopewell, New
York who founded Standard Oil, an oil refining industry, and bridged and extended his Florida East
Coast Railway to Miami in order to make his hotel ventures more accessible. This extension became
apparent when Flagler visited St. Augustine, Florida with his second wife viewing it as an endearing
location, yet deficient in sufficient resorts and transportation systems. He invested and purchased the
Jacksonville, Halifax and St. Augustine railroad which led to the establishment of the Florida East
Coast Railway. Flagler saw probable prospect in Florida to be a major tourist attraction. As Flagler's
luxury hotels were expanding and reaching all parts of Florida, the citizens of Florida wanted to
acclaim Flagler for building channels, streets, introducing power and water structures/systems and
creating a name for Florida. They wished to name the town "Flagler" in honor of him; however he
respectfully declined insisting that the town be named Miami– an Indian name originating from the
river that the city was established around. Here Flagler opens the Hotel Royal Palm, one of his
many hotels stretching over his more than 2 million acres of land owned in Florida. During the next
few years of his life, Flagler dedicated himself in emerging and evolving Florida. He conceived the

U.s. Sugar 's Health Policy Implications Essay
U.S. Sugar is one of the largest producers of sugarcane in the country. Its farms lie in the Everglades
Agricultural Area (EAA), which consists of 700,000 acres of drained farmland that were formerly
part of the Everglades its self. (Duke University, 2016). U.S. Sugar's facilities process sugarcane
into about 800,000 tons of raw sugar annually (U.S. Sugar, 2016a). Agricultural production
generally requires significant amounts of water, but growing sugar cane in Florida's dry climate
requires even more. This paper will attempt to explain where U.S. Sugar gets its water and how
much it pays for it. There does not seem to be any readily available information on the source of its
water or how much it pays for it. Knowing more about U.S. Sugar's water usage could help explain
U.S. Sugar's stake in issues like the Everglades Restoration. But more importantly, these answers
could have significant public policy implications. Is it the case that U.S Sugar is accessing a critical
resource free of charge or at a lower cost that other users? If so, what conditions in public policy,
have and continue to allow for U.S Sugar to avoid paying for its water? This paper will fill a critical
research gap in answer these questions and making the information available.
Section II of this paper will provide a brief history of agriculture and sugar production in Florida.
Section III provides answers the two previous questions by utilizing primary sources. Finally,

Great Inventors Changed our World
1.Eli Whitney was born in Westborough, Massachusetts in 1765. As a child he had a talent for
machinery, he worked as a blacksmith, invented a nail–making machine, he then attended Yale
college and graduated with a degree in engineering. Eli Whitney is an American inventor who is
best known for his invention of the cotton gin as it was one of the most influential inventions during
the Industrial Revolution shaping the economy of the Antebellum North and South. The invention of
the Cotton gin made cotton into one of the most profitable crop, which it reinforced the economic
foundation of slavery in the United States. After his invention, he later turned his attention into
manufacturing muskets for the newly formed Army of the United States in where this time he made
sure to secured contracts with the government. Eli Whitney continued inventing and manufacturing
arms until his death in 1825.
2.Robert Fulton is an American inventor, an artist and an engineer. He was born on November 14,
1765 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Fulton started designing steam–powered ships by as early as 1793.
He invented the first commercially successful steamboat, he also managed to design a system of
inland waterways, created the first submarine in history as well as a steam warship including
numerous of the world's earliest naval torpedoes that were used in the British Naval. He designed
ships for both the French Navy and the British Navy.

I. Introduction To Maglev Technology And Application
1.1 Principle of Maglev System
Maglev is a system in which the vehicle runs levitated from the guideway (corresponding to the rail
tracks of conventional railways) by using electromagnetic forces between superconducting magnets
on board the vehicle and coils on the ground. The following is a general explanation of the principle
of Maglev.
fig. 1.1
1.1.1 Magnetic Levitation
The "8" figured levitation coils are installed on the sidewalls of the guideway. When the on–board
superconducting magnets pass at a high speed about several centimeters below the center of these

"It happens almost like magic," one scientist said. Q. Does low–speed Maglev have advantages over
light rail or a rubber–tire "people mover" system? A. Supporters cite lower capital costs, lower
operating costs, tight turning capabilities, virtually no noise pollution, smooth rides because
levitated vehicles create no friction, less intrusion on land and an opportunity to showcase the city
and establish it as world leader of transit technology.

Critics of the Pittsburgh project are questioning the use of public money, the philosophy of
building the largest parking garage in Pittsburgh near Downtown rather than on the outskirts,
competing with the Port Authority for funds and riders and whether any short transit system to the
Civic Arena serves a worthwhile purpose. Q. What happens if I'm aboard the Civic Arena Maglev
shuttle and it breaks down? A. If there's a real emergency, riders could open car doors manually to
reach a combination emergency/maintenance walkway between the parallel Maglev "tracks." The
Maglev plan proposes using a customized tow vehicle in case a car dies because of lost power or a
mechanical problem. It could go out on the track to push or tow a crippled car. Meanwhile, Maglev
would maintain service on the opposite track. Maglev cars are to contain recessed emergency
wheels, so if the cars lose their levitation, they can still ride on the guideway. Plans for the Civic

The Continent of North America
CHAPTER TEN THE CONTINENT OF NORTH AMERICA North America is the fourth largest
continent of the world. It occupies the next place to Asia, Europe and Africa. Financed by the king
and queen of Spain the famous navigator Columbus of Italy discovered America miraculously
instead of India in 1492. Many small and large islands surrounding North America are included in
this continent. The islands close to North Canada, Greenland, Newfoundland and West Indies are
remarkable. Location : The triangular continent extends from north of 830 North Latitude to the
south of 80 North Latitude and from east of 520 West Longitude to the west of 1700 West

Lakes to the north of the continent and the Salt lake to the west of the United States of America are
also notable. The lakes of Canada remain frozen during winter. CLIMATE The physiography of
North America influences the climate of this continent to a great extent. The sea breeze can not enter
the central part of North America due to presence of the Rocky Mountains at the west and the
Appalachian highlands at the east. During winter, the cold wind from north directly blows to the
Gulf of Mexico in the south due to the non–existence of any mountain extending from east to west.
As a result, the central plain land keeps frozen. Again during summer, the hot wind blowing from
the Gulf of Mexico upto the Hudson Bay keeps the climate hot. Climatic regions : Different types of
climate exist in North America according to the influence of various factors of climate. These

Flagler Global Logistics Analysis
Flagler Global Logistics, a logistics service provider, created a logistics center in South Florida that
has and continues to bring a significant improvement to the transportation industry in this area of the
country (Urban Land Institute, 2012). The main goal of this infrastructure project is to provide
companies engaged in national and international trade with a large facility that can be used to
transfer merchandise to and from this region by road, rail, ocean, and air (Urban Land Institute,
2012). The South Florida Logistics Center is strategically located close to the Miami International
Airport, the Port of Miami, the Palmetto Expressway, and the Florida Turnpike and is connected by
railway to an intermodal transfer facility located in the Port of Everglades (Urban Land Institute,
2012). Companies like The Florida East Coast Railway, CSX, Norfolk Southern, FedEx, Seaboard
Marine and others will benefit the most from this project because it will improve their ability to
transfer goods in and out of the region (Urban Land Institute, 2012). ... Show more content on

Due to the large quantity of freight and the long distance that it must travel to arrive to its
destination exporters and importers alike have found logistic service providers essential to engage in

only on the area of transportation others specialize in freight consolidation, distribution
management, and warehousing (Robinson, 2014). They have enough market knowledge,

Essay on The Vietnam War
The Vietnam War is truly one of the most unique wars ever fought by the Unites States of by any
country. It was never officially declared a war (Knowll, 3). It had no official beginning nor an
official end. It was fought over 10,000 miles away in a virtually unknown country. The enemy and
the allies looked exactly the alike, and may by day be a friend but by night become an enemy
(Aaseng 113). It matched the tried and true tactics of World War Two against a hide, run, and shoot
technique known as "Guerrilla Warfare." It matched some of the best trained soldiers in the world
against largely an untrained militia of untrained farmers. The United States' soldiers had at least a
meal to look forward to unlike the Communist Vietnamese soldiers ... Show more content on

A large portion of Vietcong troops were killed, and major Vietcong outposts were discovered. Most
of the overtaken cities, including Saigon, had been regained. Unfortunately for the United States the
timing of the Tet Offensive couldn't have been worse. For the past three years the Americans at
home had been promised a swift defeat of the (so called) nearly destroyed Communists, which, after
the retreating of the French, had become the main goal of the United States. Worst of all, election
year was approaching, and the incumbent Richard Nixon was promising a swift plan of
"Vietmenization" in which the war was supposed to be placed in the hands of the South Vietnamese
and allow for the retreat of American soldiers. Johnson was so unconfident he didn't run for
reelection. Finally, in 1972 the last United States foot soldiers were removed from Vietnam, and in
1975 the North Vietnamese over took Saigon, renaming it Ho Chi Mien City after their brilliant
military leader. At this time the United States Embassy was surrendered, marking the end of the war
(Winthrop, 861–865).
As the soldiers returned home they had to adapt from a war in which over one million people were
killed. There were no banners or celebrations, and as the news of events such as the My Lai
Massacre spread, they were seen as ruthless killers. When these soldiers risked their lives every
minute for a reason they were not told and seemingly was purposeless, and then returned to a

Essay about The Everglades: Florida's Unique Landscape of...
The Everglades is a diverse ecosystem located in southern Florida, yet urbanization has created a
considerable amount of impact that has altered the physical landscape of the region, resulting in a
symbiotic environment between humans and nature. Based on geographical research, the original
Everglades spanned an area of approximately 12,000km2, and now because of urbanization and
agricultural growth in this sub–region the area of the Everglades has been condensed to half of its
original size (Willard et al 1–2). The Everglades is actually a sub–region of the Southern Coastlands

Evapotranspiration (evaporation and transpiration from plants) and rainfall also circulate the water
within the Everglades and power the frequent thunderstorms that the region encounters (Tramontana

and mixing the low water levels aid in varying nutrient quantities and locations are ways that regular
thunderstorms and hurricanes also serve the Everglades in a positive way (Tramontana and Johnson
1–2). Moss and peat layers also conceal a limestone plate that formed during the Pleistocene era of
glaciers and an increased sea level deposited sediment between 1.8 million and 11,000 years ago

Chinese Immigration Of The United States
Chinese Immigration to the United States in the nineteenth century until 1870 was shaped by a
combination of factors including internal political turmoil and financial instability throughout
China, growing western Imperial and economic influences in South East Asia, China 's deepening
trade deficit with European nations, and industrial and technological innovations. Concurrently, the
rising demand for inexpensive labour during the California Gold Rush, (1848–1858) development
of national railway projects, and the range of economic possibilities in America provided many
Chinese Sojourners with the opportunity to support their families and villages at home. Therefore,
an understanding of the international context of Chinese immigration to America is necessary to
fully understand the dynamics and complexity of the period. From 1800 until 1870 there was a
period of world–wide political change. This included a political transformation for the French
Empire following the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte (1804–1814, 1815), a shift away from slave
labour and the reign of Queen Victoria over the British Empire (1837–1901), the rising international
influence of Russia, the slow collapse of the Ottoman Empire following the Crimean War (1853–
1856), the faltering control over Latin America by Spain, as well as the growth of European
Imperialism and trade in Southeast Asia. In addition, the growth of market capitalism and
international trade dominated by corporations such as the East

Rutland Case Study
Ever since I moved to Vermont, I knew that drugs were a problem in this state, and Rutland was the
spotlighted capitol of that problem. An article published earlier this week by CBS News highlights
Rutland's newly found label as the "place that has become the poster child for heroin epidemic
sweeping America." Although most of the drugs in Vermont stream in from larger cities in the
Northeast such as New York City, Boston, or states along the East Coast such Florida, it is Rutland
that has been deemed the "drug capitol."Just ealier this week, on October 16th, 88 pounds of heroin

High–speed railway (HRL) systems have been used primarily over in such countries as Japan since
1964 and France since 1984. Recently the United States has generated interest in the high–speed
railway as well. The proposed system would stretch from Miami through Orlando and end in the St.

travel time from downtown Miami to Orlando would take approximately 2.5 hours. Intercity

Gadsden Purchase
The Gadsden Purchase of 1853 is one of the most monumental land purchases in United States
history. In basic terms, the Gadsden Purchase was an area of land that was acquired by the United
States from Mexico in order to build a railway for the transportation of goods in the South from East
to West in order to fulfill Manifest Destiny. Throughout this paper, I hope to accurately navigate
through the events prior to the Gadsden Purchase as well as the early life of James Gadsden.
Although many topics relate to the purchase itself, I will offer a historical view into Gadsden's life
before, after, and during the purchase as well as a more in depth look into the Treaty of Guadalupe
Hidalgo. I shall also touch base on why the land was so ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They called it the Gadsden Purchase, which the United States agreed to pay Mexico ten million
dollars for thirty eight thousand square miles of land. Ten million dollars back in 1853 is equivalent
to two hundred and eighty million dollars today. The Southern transcontinental railroad that James
Gadsden had dreamed up was never built.
The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican American war in 1848 was a very
important decision in our history. We allowed the Mexican government to keep Mesilla Valley in
place of them giving us the Santa Rita Mountains. We believed that we would profit off of this
compromise due to the fact that we thought there was rich copper deposits, and some silver and gold
which had not yet been mined. Little did we know that the Mesilla Valley was essential for the
construction of a Southern Transcontinental Railroad. The reason it was important for the railroad
was because it consisted of flat desert land about fifty miles north to south and 200 miles wide, east
to west. There were two parcels of the land that President Pierce instructed Gadsden to try and buy.
The Baja California Peninsula was the first for fifty million dollars or the thirty eight thousand
square miles of dry arid desert. Santa Ana needed money badly to help build up his army to defend
against the very people wanting to pay him, the United States. He thought the best solution was to
sell as little land as possible for the most

Escape from Industrialization in Wells' The Time Machine
Our society craves an escape from life. When our tedious jobs bog us down, we escape into a hobby.
When the responsibilities of school tire us, we escape in a vacation. When world affairs take a
frightening turn of events, we escape in a good movie or absorbing book. There are countless
distractions available to lighten our heavy minds and ease our anxieties. But it was not always as
easy as it is today. What if distractions such as these were available only to a leisured class? What if
the average person did not have the means to escape, even in small ways? This was the dilemma in
late Victorian England. The people who needed and craved escape the ... Show more content on

The changes involved with industrialization had lead to an increased struggle between the classes,
driving the working class and wealthy class further apart. The wealthy could have afforded many
different means of escape, from traveling to the countryside to enjoying the theater. Their lives were
relatively painless compared to the difficult lives of the poor. Factory work, made possible and
necessary by industrialization, was a huge part of the lives of the working class. The poor did not
enjoy the same benefits as the rich, while they did contribute the backbreaking labor necessary to
drive industrialization.
This relationship between the rich and poor is explored in The Time Machine. Using his knowledge
of science and technology, the Time Traveller creates a working time machine. Full of excitement
and expectation, the Time Traveller speeds into the future, eventually stopping in the year 802,701
AD. The world he encounters is not the technologically–advanced society he expected to find and
he quickly formulates a theory about the strange beings that he meets. Instead of being greeted by a
human, the Time Traveller meets "a very beautiful and graceful creature, but indescribably frail. His
flushed face reminded me of the more beautiful kind of consumptive–that hectic beauty of which we
used to hear so much" (Wells 19–20). The frailty of this angelic invalid is its most distinguishing
feature.

developed cities and resorts along the way. Flagler's railway entered West Palm Beach in 1894. In
the following year, two freezes caused extreme damage to the crops in Florida but luckily didn't
reach Miami. These freezes resulted in Flagler meeting with Julia Tuttle, who purchased Fort Dallas
in 1891, and making a deal to extend his railway down to Miami in exchange for hundreds of acres
of pristine land. Flagler also agreed to establish the building blocks for a city on both sides of the

then a city was growing on both sides of the Miami River. Back then Avenue D, which is today's

Panama into two sections and contributed little to the Panamanian economy. The reason for this
being is that those who lived within the Canal Zone, a five–mile–wide strip on either side of the
canal, belonging to the U.S. and were either U.S. citizens or were West Indians working for the
canal. Furthermore, the canal is 48 miles long and with a width of 10 miles, with the U.S.
government having permission to acquire more land, the people of Panama are losing a vast strip of
land which could be used for agriculture or other purposes.
John Latane wrote his article The Effects of the Panama Canal on Our Relations with Latin America
in 1914 and claims that since the Panama Canal, new policies are being formed, "The building of
the canal has, in the first place, rendered inevitable the adoption of a policy of naval supremacy in
the Caribbean Sea, and, in the second place, it has led to the formulation of new political policies to
be applied in the zone of the Caribbean..." He goes on to say how these policies have given the U.S.
control of canal routes, ability to acquire naval bases in the area, set up satellites, and requires
governments to be constitutional and have the consent of its citizens. The scope the Panama Canal
goes beyond just the simple control of a waterway. By having the canal, the U.S. was inserting
greater dominance in the Caribbean Sea and in Latin American countries. The Monroe Document

Adipic Acid

  • 1. Adipic Acid CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1. HISTORY AND GENERAL INFORMATION ON ADIPIC ACID 1. History on The Production Adipic acid is an important organic chemical raw material. In China, it is used as raw material in the production of Nylon 6/6 salt, polyurethane, plasticizers, high–grade lubricants and food additives. With the rapid growth of development, the application of adipic acid keeps expanding. The production of adipic acid is controlled in the hands of multinationals. An American chemical company (DuPont) is the biggest supplier in the world. On 2004, total capacity of adipic acid in the world was recorded to be as much as 2.74 million tons and Du Pont alone caters about 1.1 million tons which is almost ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Currently in Malaysia, it is not producing or manufacturing any adipic acid but they only become the supplier for the local industries. For this matter, Malaysia should build at least one manufacturer plant of adipic acid to decrease the import of the adipic acid from other countries. There are not many adipic acid plants in the world and therefore local manufacturer should grab this opportunity and not just depending on outside sources. This would make Malaysia one of the largest productions of adipic acid in the world. 2. General Description Generally, adipic acid has a structure of Carbon 6 straight–chain with two carboxylic acid (–COOH) groups. Due to its long aliphatic chain, it is slightly soluble in water, alcohol and acetone. Adipic acid can also be called as 1,4– butanedicarboxylic acid, 1,6–hexanedioic acid, adipinic acid, acifloctin, acinetten, octafluorohexanedioic acid as well as hexanedioic acid. It is expected to have a chemical formula of C6H10O4 and a structural formula of HOOC(CH2)4COOH with a total molecular weight of 146.14 gmol–1. Figure 1.2 is the structures of adipic acid: Figure 1.2: Molecular structure of adipic acid Commercial adipic acid is one of the purest chemicals produced on a large scale (99.8%) because of the extreme sensitivity of polyamide synthesis to impurities. • 2. Essay On South Floria South Florida's ascendancy to the epicenter of the cruise industry began long before the modern cruise lines were born. Early in the twentieth century, a group of daring visionaries and entrepreneurs began to dream of expanding the local business community and creating new industries to take advantage of Florida's climate with its sunshine and warmth. Chief among these businesses they envisioned a winter tourism trade but to realize this dream they would require a strong transportation infrastructure. The coastal shipping trade along the United States' East Coast helped to bring the first visitors to Florida spurred on by the growing railroad empires developed by Henry Flagler and Henry B. Plant. By the 1890s, these railroad tycoons ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then in 1913, the Plant Line, now owned by Flagler's Peninsular & Occidental Steamship Company (P&O), decided to send its new 3,786–ton steamer the ss Evangeline on winter pleasure cruises. But, instead of sailing from the new ports, she cruised from Key West calling at Panama, Jamaica, and Cuba. The following winter the cruises were repeated but this time sailing from Jacksonville. All the remained was to link these new cruise efforts with the emerging South Florida ports. After World War I, a flourishing trade developed with steamers such as the 1,700 gross ton ss City of Miami and the 3,200 gross ton ss Northland, maintaining overnight runs between Miami and Havana. However, sensing that the ports still lacked a proper infrastructure to maintain the shipping industry, the first of many efforts began to improve the facilities. In Miami, a US$3 million project was undertaken in 1925 to dredge and widen the channel. Similarly, to the north, the Mayor of Hollywood was the driving force for a US$6 million project to deepen the harbor inlet, widen the turning basin and build modern 35–foot piers at Bay Mable. Completed early in 1928, it is said that more than 85 percent of the residents of Broward County turned out to witness the dedication of their new port. At the same time, local women's groups led successful efforts to replace the unpopular Bay Mable Harbor name which what they thought would be a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The United Bone, Ambria English 11 B April 17, 2017 The United States and the Soviet Union were fighting against each other; the Cold War was separated into three groups (Jerylin Watson). The nation's economy is a very difficult balancing act. Cold War confrontations nearly always conducted through surrogates or economic pressure (David Painter). This is what happened when the tensions of the Cold War affected the United States and the world (Robert H. Dugger). The United States became the global consumer of last resort for Germany, Japan, USSR, and China. The Cold War began after World War II which had two main enemies which were the United States and the Soviet Union. "The Cold War," got its name, began when the United States and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An American U–2 reconnaissance airplane was shot down over the Soviet Union. American Central Intelligence Agency had provided training for exiles. However, the United States failed to send military planes to protect the Soviet Union from the invasion. The Cuban's missile crisis easily could have resulted in a nuclear war. American's felt especially threatened, with those missiles just one hundred fifty kilometers from the Florida coast. A major change in the Cold War would take peace in nineteen eighty–five when Mikhail Gorbachev became the leader of the Soviet Union. The Cold War years were also the time of the "Space Race" – when the United States and the Soviet Union competed in space exploration (Jerilyn Watson). Keeping a nation's economy going is a very difficult balancing act. Situations where economies were hurt by new laws which were completely in the hands of the countries government. The actions Russia had taken with the Ukraine's have caused the European Union to put sanction on Russia. The country usually exports 45 million GPD of food and drink to Russia but 22 million GPD was stopped by sanctions. This was a huge loss in revenue and had for reaching effects, the normal trade of these countries. World War II created many issues on a worldwide scale; two different forms of government were fighting for influence. But, after six stubborn flames decide to materialize on the black wicks, the threatening wind subsides, and she is ready to begin. In the stillness of the red room, the wild seventh flame flickers and makes her way to the underneath of the thick bed, reaching and searching. Fingers settle. A wooden lettered board. A wooden teared pointer. The box is set on the table in the middle of the auburn glow. In this reddish tint, she carefully places the tear with both hands on the board's center. She closes her eyes. Despite my efforts to be welcoming, I was cast the role some ill–mannered redheaded pariah. I spent thousands of Henry's money to look my best, to wear the most beautiful dresses, and no one cared. I was made a fool. The last party Henry hosted took place on a yacht, and I almost killed everyone. In my efforts to make the party last longer, to maybe finally get a chance to have a chat with the beautiful women in their gowns, I caused the party to get caught in a storm. We almost didn't make it out alive. They were furious; he was furious. He needed to get me away. We had spent our honeymoon a few years back in St. Augustine, an old, small remote Spanish–style town in northeastern Florida. Midst the dreamy Spanish moss and orange groves, it was here he decided to build a palace: the Ponce De León Hotel. A playground for the rich, complete with the wired electricity technologies of Henry's friend, Thomas Edison, and the mosaics and stained glass murals of Louis C. Tiffany. Built in the Spanish Renaissance Revival Style, the Ponce de León Hotel is seemingly the ideal getaway during the brutal cold winter. Currently, The Ponce is one of the nation's most exclusive and extravagant hotels; the wealthy pay significant sums to stay here for the winter season. There are three types of tourism which is domestic, inbound and outbound tourism. Domestic tourism When a tourist travels around the same country, as they live in. For example when you live in London and decide to go for a tour in the palace of Westminster, then you are a domestic tourism. The beginnings and ends of what we choose to call centuries are almost invariably years of little significance. But there is little agreement over when the twentieth century c.e. arrived, and there were several points both before the year 2000 (the collapse of the Soviet Union, the reunification of Germany, the surge of globalization from the mid–1990s) and afterward (9/11, or the global recession of 2008) when one could quite plausibly argue that a new era had begun. A compelling case can be made for viewing the decades of the global scramble for colonies after 1870 as a predictable culmination of the long nineteenth century, which was ushered in by the industrial and political revolutions of the late 1700s. But at the same time, without serious attention to the processes and misguided policies that led to decades of agrarian and industrial depression from the late 1860s to the 1890s, as well as the social tensions and political rivalries that generated and were in turn fed by imperialist expansionism, one cannot begin to comprehend the causes and consequences of the Great War that began in 1914. That conflict determined the contours of the twentieth century in myriad ways. On the one hand, the war set in motion transformative processes that were clearly major departures from those that defined the nineteenth–century world order. On the other, it perversely unleashed forces ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Henry Flagler Henry Flagler was an American capitalist, entrepreneur and industrialist born in Hopewell, New York who founded Standard Oil, an oil refining industry, and bridged and extended his Florida East Coast Railway to Miami in order to make his hotel ventures more accessible. This extension became apparent when Flagler visited St. Augustine, Florida with his second wife viewing it as an endearing location, yet deficient in sufficient resorts and transportation systems. He invested and purchased the Jacksonville, Halifax and St. Augustine railroad which led to the establishment of the Florida East Coast Railway. Flagler saw probable prospect in Florida to be a major tourist attraction. As Flagler's luxury hotels were expanding and reaching all parts of Florida, the citizens of Florida wanted to acclaim Flagler for building channels, streets, introducing power and water structures/systems and creating a name for Florida. They wished to name the town "Flagler" in honor of him; however he respectfully declined insisting that the town be named Miami– an Indian name originating from the river that the city was established around. Here Flagler opens the Hotel Royal Palm, one of his many hotels stretching over his more than 2 million acres of land owned in Florida. Its farms lie in the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA), which consists of 700,000 acres of drained farmland that were formerly part of the Everglades its self. (Duke University, 2016). U.S. Sugar's facilities process sugarcane into about 800,000 tons of raw sugar annually (U.S. Sugar, 2016a). Agricultural production generally requires significant amounts of water, but growing sugar cane in Florida's dry climate requires even more. This paper will attempt to explain where U.S. Sugar gets its water and how much it pays for it. There does not seem to be any readily available information on the source of its water or how much it pays for it. Knowing more about U.S. Sugar's water usage could help explain U.S. Sugar's stake in issues like the Everglades Restoration. But more importantly, these answers could have significant public policy implications. Is it the case that U.S Sugar is accessing a critical resource free of charge or at a lower cost that other users? If so, what conditions in public policy, have and continue to allow for U.S Sugar to avoid paying for its water? This paper will fill a critical research gap in answer these questions and making the information available. Section II of this paper will provide a brief history of agriculture and sugar production in Florida. Section III provides answers the two previous questions by utilizing primary sources. Finally, Section IV analyzes the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Supporters cite lower capital costs, lower operating costs, tight turning capabilities, virtually no noise pollution, smooth rides because levitated vehicles create no friction, less intrusion on land and an opportunity to showcase the city and establish it as world leader of transit technology. 3 Critics of the Pittsburgh project are questioning the use of public money, the philosophy of building the largest parking garage in Pittsburgh near Downtown rather than on the outskirts, competing with the Port Authority for funds and riders and whether any short transit system to the Civic Arena serves a worthwhile purpose. Q. What happens if I'm aboard the Civic Arena Maglev shuttle and it breaks down? A. If there's a real emergency, riders could open car doors manually to reach a combination emergency/maintenance walkway between the parallel Maglev "tracks." The Maglev plan proposes using a customized tow vehicle in case a car dies because of lost power or a mechanical problem. It could go out on the track to push or tow a crippled car. Meanwhile, Maglev would maintain service on the opposite track. Maglev cars are to contain recessed emergency

Worst of all, election year was approaching, and the incumbent Richard Nixon was promising a swift plan of "Vietmenization" in which the war was supposed to be placed in the hands of the South Vietnamese and allow for the retreat of American soldiers. Johnson was so unconfident he didn't run for reelection. • 26. Chinese Immigration Of The United States Chinese Immigration to the United States in the nineteenth century until 1870 was shaped by a combination of factors including internal political turmoil and financial instability throughout China, growing western Imperial and economic influences in South East Asia, China 's deepening trade deficit with European nations, and industrial and technological innovations. Concurrently, the rising demand for inexpensive labour during the California Gold Rush, (1848–1858) development of national railway projects, and the range of economic possibilities in America provided many Chinese Sojourners with the opportunity to support their families and villages at home. Therefore, an understanding of the international context of Chinese immigration to America is necessary to fully understand the dynamics and complexity of the period. From 1800 until 1870 there was a period of world–wide political change. This included a political transformation for the French Empire following the rule of Napoleon Bonaparte (1804–1814, 1815), a shift away from slave labour and the reign of Queen Victoria over the British Empire (1837–1901), the rising international influence of Russia, the slow collapse of the Ottoman Empire following the Crimean War (1853– 1856), the faltering control over Latin America by Spain, as well as the growth of European Imperialism and trade in Southeast Asia. The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican American war in 1848 was a very important decision in our history. We allowed the Mexican government to keep Mesilla Valley in place of them giving us the Santa Rita Mountains. We believed that we would profit off of this compromise due to the fact that we thought there was rich copper deposits, and some silver and gold which had not yet been mined. Little did we know that the Mesilla Valley was essential for the construction of a Southern Transcontinental Railroad. The reason it was important for the railroad was because it consisted of flat desert land about fifty miles north to south and 200 miles wide, east to west. There were two parcels of the land that President Pierce instructed Gadsden to try and buy. The Baja California Peninsula was the first for fifty million dollars or the thirty eight thousand square miles of dry arid desert. The wealthy could have afforded many different means of escape, from traveling to the countryside to enjoying the theater. The poor did not enjoy the same benefits as the rich, while they did contribute the backbreaking labor necessary to drive industrialization.
