2. ■ I believe this mid shot fish bowl camera angle fromTove Lo’s – Habits is extremely effective. I
believe it portrays the protagonist in a very effective way and the use of natural lighting and the
protagonist being the centre focal point highlights her dismay whilst intoxicated. The constant
movement of surroundings in this shot allow for a chaotic mise-en-scene and successfully portray
the protagonist in an effective way. This is an impacting shot that I plan to use in my own music
video.
3. ■ I consider this opening shot from Kiesza’s – Hideaway effective. It immediately displays the mise-
en-scene of the music video. It is an interesting shot that allows the audience to get a feel of the
surroundings before being introduced to the main protagonist – allowing an element of suspense.
Shots such as these I intend to use in my own music video.
4. ■ This is another shot that has intrigued me from Gotye – SomebodyThat I UsedTo Know. This is an
impacting two shot of the two main protagonists in the video. The female protagonist is not
introduced until later in the video where she is seen to not blend as well with the background as
the male protagonist – suggesting she is the dominant of the two. It is also apparent this two shot
of the protagonists is reflective of their emotions and consequently impacting and interesting.
This is a shot I will consider using in my own music video.
5. ■ This shot is taken from Naught Boy – La La La ft. Sam Smith. I believe use of aerial shots is not a
common shot used in the majority of music videos and consequently is effective. Many different
shots such as aerial shots, close ups, mid shots and long shots are used throughout this video. The
use of varied shots allows the audience to remain engaged with the music video. It is also apparent
that this shot shows a mysterious element to the music video as the protagonists choice of clothing
and main focal point is the strange bright hat – an unusual focal point. The protagonist is also placed
at an inferior angle, suggesting the camera is potentially looking down at them through the eyes of
something else.
6. ■ I consider this shot from Ed Sheeran – Shape ofYou an interesting shot. The use of an extreme close
up of the two protagonists from this angle presents them as emotive and loving. The use of the
protagonist looking directly up at the male protagonist suggests an element of admiration and
comfort. This is a shot I will consider using in my music video as I intend to have a large element of
emotion in my own music video. This is an interesting angle used to show the two protagonists
emotions towards one another in a warming light.
7. ■ Use of focus pulls in James Arthur’s – SayYouWont Let Go is an effective technique used to create
variation across the different shots. It is also an effective way to create specific focus on the two
protagonists for effect. The camera focuses on the two protagonists closer up and presents them
as vulnerable and loving towards one another. Emotion is effectively portrayed throughout the
shots and focus pulls and consequently focus pulls are a technique I will consider using in my music
video to allow variation across the music video.
8. ■ Another effective shot used is a close up from Chainsmokers – Closer. This shot gives an insight into
the protagonists life and gives a narrative aspect to the music video. Introducing the protagonists
before they are met. This is an effective technique used and it is one I will consider using in my
music video through use creating an idea of memories an reminiscing.
