Probably my favorite book that we read in BIFL this semester was Ali–Karamali's "The Muslim Next Door". Before reading this book, I had no clue
what Islam was or what sort of traditions Muslims practiced (I have done an extremely poor job of being informed with the events and people of the
world). Reading about a totally different religion than my own gave me the opportunity to question the religious practices that I participate in. Hajj
seemed like such a silly thing when we first started reading about the 5 pillars of Islam, but once we watched the National Geographic video,
something clicked for me. I began to realize how incredible it must feel to be surrounded with people from all over the globe that gather together to do
the same religious–based activity. Further, I began to recognize just how beneficial the Qur'an was for women of that age. Ali–Karamali states that, "if
Islam so greatly raised the status of women fourteen centuries ago, when women's rights were inconceivable and implementation of them was a
Herculean task, then the message of Islam itself must be feminist" (123). Here I am, a privileged, intelligent, white female trying to raise the bar for
women all over the world like I was the first one to think of that. It's incredible to think that religious texts were trying to do this work at a time it was
unheard of!

12 Million Americans are sociopaths that means every time you find yourself in a group of 25 people you can expect there is at least one
individual without a conscience. Contrary to popular belief, according to Martha Stout in her book The Sociopath Next Door, only about 20% of

Like many people, my belief system is core to my daily life processes. The way I think and how I perceive the world is shaped by both outer
influences and inner processes. On reading The Universe Next Door, I feel as though I was able to understand myself more, and hopefully understand
others better. More specifically, I believe that my upbringing in theism is shifting to the broader worldview of postmodernism while still holding on to
some old values. Whatever I choose, though, I hope that I will be able to do what is right, and more importantly, continue growing within myself.
Theism is deceptively simple. At its core, theism denotes that everything begins and ends with God. Unfortunately, theism's simplicity is its greatest
weakness, because it leaves many questions unanswered. That is why I've found it difficult to form a solid worldview. While I still subscribe to a
theistic worldview, reading this book made me realize that it is and will always be important to question ourselves and others about their belief
systems. God is good. According to Dr. SIre, the principle "God is Good" is theism's most basic preaching. As a child, it was easy for me to drink
in this belief. For me, and for many other children, God was quite simple. Within His world there is only good and evil. What is good is God's, what
is evil is not. It's an easy explanation, and before we start questioning things, it's quite simple to grasp. As we grow older, however, trying to
understand God and his moral principles is nearly, if not entirely impossible.
Naturally, it was easy to place my faith in a singular God from above. But as I grew older, this single point where I had once rested my faith grew into
a tangled web. My belief system became a precarious place no longer steady enough to lay my religious foundations. I am still a firm believer in a Holy
God, but the role of this God in my life is still up in the air.
At a church retreat I attended a few years ago, a guest speaker lamented what a pity it was that as people get older, they question God. I tried to alter
my worldview to fit the speaker's agenda after I heard the sermon. I felt guilty for not fully accepting God as I once had. Therefore, I tried to believe in

In fact, the typical millionaire is a 57 year old male, self–employed, with an average income of $247,000. They are fairly well educated, wear
inexpensive suits, and drive late model American made cars. On average, these millionaires live in modest homes and work in occupations such as:
contractors, auctioneers, farmers, owners of mobile home parks, and stamp and coin dealers. These individuals are organized, live within a budget, and
spend considerable time and energy investing. These individuals are also self–described tight wads. In lieu of receiving money directly for their time,
the authors offered to donate money in the interviewee's name to a favorite charity. The reply of most of the millionaires was "I am my own favorite
charity," and kept the money for themselves.
The authors place the millionaires interviewed for their research into three categories: prodigious accumulators of wealth (PAW), average accumulators

A Critique on "The Sociopath Next Door"
Down the street, in our workplaces, seemingly under our beds– Harvard Medical Professor Martha Stout's Sociopath Next Door: The Ruthless vs. The
Rest of Us sends the reader into a state of frightful paranoia when she mentions that a staggering 1 in 25, 4%, persons is, in fact, a sociopath. A
sociopath, as Stout asserts, is a person with the lack of a conscience, thus a person not concerned with the suffering of others, to worry only about
itself. She goes on to tell us that, because the rate of sociopaths in our society is so high, we must have already met hundreds without knowing it, due

Moving on, any skeptic reading this book would surely have a plethora of questions for the professor. How, exactly, does one come up with the
statistic of 1/25 in regards to the ratio of sociopaths to "normal people?" This question is rather baffling because, in the book, Stout states that there are
many sociopaths which feign emotion for the sole purpose of progressing in life. How, then, do these people, faking a conscious, admit themselves to
being a full–fledged sociopath when they have been lying to themselves and others around them for the bulk of their lives? Stout either did not factor
these individuals into her statistical evaluation, which would mean a great number more of sociopaths than perceived through this book, or that Stout,
with this knowledge, made a conjecture. In any case, especially in the latter, this statistic cannot be trusted and should therefore not be taken as hard
fact. Another gaping problem in this book is the lack of perspective provided by Stout in regards to a true sociopath, one that admits they have not
remorse, no conscience; one who only wants to win. It would have been an eye–opening experience to truly view the world through the eyes of a
sociopath, which could have been accomplished through the course of a simple question and answer style interview. While this book is clearly not

In the "Millionaire Next Door" written by Thomas J. Stanley, Ph.D. and William D. Danko. This book goes into detail in explaining different stories
and examples of how millionaires made their millions. Throughout this book, I learned five points and I'll be explaining how I want to include these
points in my life from everything takes time and energy, why being frugal is important, why you aren't your vehicle, whether I'm a PAW or a UAW
and why education is important. In taking these points and the ways that I will add them to my lifestyle when it comes to financial needs of myself
and my family.

We as human beings consciously and unconsciously take variables from our own lives to come up with our own definition of a worldview. We
make life decisions based on our morals and values that we have put into place because of our views. These views are not always necessarily

The Resident Officer Program of Elgin (ROPE) program is operated out of Elgin, IL (Dempsey & Forst, 2016). The program provides housing to
officers in an effort to create safer communities through working as well as living within areas of distress throughout the city. Currently, there are four

As I come to the close of this course, Philosophy and Worldviews, I must admit that my thoughts regarding the many worldviews have been
enlightened and enhanced. Studying the book by Sire, "The Universe Next Door" provided me with a great deal of knowledge on how other view

The second part of The Slave Next Door, is a lot different than the first part. The second part is more about the ways in which human trafficking can
come to an end or ways to prevent it from occurring. One of the main things that the second part talks about is on the need for more drastic state and
federal laws to discontinue human trafficking and to hold the government accountable for the persecution of perpetrators and the assistance for victims.

opportunities. The border has been set to protect illegal immigrants from crossing the border. Despite the protection of the borders, several

In the essay "The Worker Next Door" written by Dr.Chris Chiswick, the author addresses the illegal immigrant problem in America, and gives

The Millionaire Next Door
The book of "The Millionaire Next Door" is written by Thomas Stanley and William Danko, and it uses lots of case studies and statistic data to tell us
how the actual millionaires live in the society and how can normal people become millionaires. The book shows a unique insight of millionaires and
base on the authors' research in last twenty years, thus the result is convincing. The authors try to tell us two things: wealth is what you accumulate but
not what you spend; and there are some ways you can use to get wealth. For me, this book is interesting and useful. In the first part, the book talks
about prototypical millionaires live next door and starts with describing an odd situation: Some people live in expensive neighborhood and drive
luxurious cars but with less income, while some people do not live in upscale neighborhoods but accumulate a lot of wealth. The later ones are the true
millionaires. The authors then talk about seven common characteristics about these millionaires: "they live below their means; they allocate their time
and money efficiently; they believe that financial independence is more important than displaying high social status; their parents did not provide
economic outpatient care; their adult children are economically self–sufficient; they are proficient in targeting market opportunities; they chose the

With the book "Millionaire Next Door" written by Thomas J. Stanley, Ph.D. and William D. Danko goes into detail in explaining different stories and
examples of how millionaires made their millions. Throughout this book, I learned five points that I'll be explaining in how I want to include these
points in my life from everything takes time and energy, why being frugal is important, why you are not what you drive, whether I'm a PAW or a
UAW and why education is important and how I'll be adding them into my and my family lifestyle when it comes to financial needs.

When looking at UAW or a PAW I really looked at my upbringing and saw that my parents where UAWS. They worked a lot, which made them good
money, they spent a lot, they charged a lot of debts, if we needed something we bought it, and most things we wanted, we bought, didn't save much. As
my parents got older they had to become PAWs from not working as much they really look at their money, they save, really budget and really think
about their spending habits. They buy their basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter and save for the extra stuff they may need. For myself,
because of my parents and with not working full time and being a full–time student. I have had to be a PAW it's something I'm still working on, by
saving more and watching my spending. The fifth and last point I learned from "The Millionaire Next Door" was the one thing they kept saying all
throughout the book. That every millionaire had a good education and if they didn't they made sure that their children and grandchildren got a good
education. I think this is so important as well getting an education is a must nowadays with any career field and it's important that women and their
daughters go to college. It encourages one to want
