2. Music Video research
We researched videos of a similar genre to our track and found a variety of music videos who use
different types of effects to suit their music.
La Roux โ In For the Kill (remix)
This video is for the remix of
La Roux โ In For the Kill. The
music was slowed down, as
was the video.
The video included weird
people moving about in
strange ways and dark
effects.
A video was created for the song by a fan; using herself as the main moving image for the video in
which she then used various effects to capture the mood of the song. It was interesting to see
someone else's interprestation of the song

3. Audience Research
For our audience research we handed out music video questionnaires to find out what
type of music people are interested in.
These questionnaires were given out to a variety of ages, ethnicities, and also to both
genders.

4. Artist Research
Josiah Wolf & Liz Hodson
Josiah Wolf & Liz Hodson are unknown artists
produce folk/ indie music. They also cover songs of a
blues genre and make it their own by changing the
speed of the track and combine more than one track
together.
Bill Withers
The original of "Ain't No Sunshine" was by Bill Withers.
5. The Killing advert
Our chosen track was featured in an advert for a TV drama which is about a murder of a
young girl which launches an extended police investigation.

they use this track to enhances these themes.

6. Final Idea
For our music video, weโve come up with a final idea as to what we
want to include in it. Our video will be a gloomy interpretation of the
song so it will suit the mood of our track. In order to get this across to
our audience, we will use the codes and conventions of a negative
narrative video.
Weโve chosen a white female with brunette curly hair who will play
our main character. Her role is to mime the lyrics of our chosen track
whilst acting. The images above will give you a sense of what our video
will embrace.
7. Location and Props
Location
The reason for choosing a stage for
one of our locations is so we can
manipulate lighting and experiment
with the spatial area.
Using a subway as a location will
give the audience and immediate
sense of feeling trapped which is our
intention.
Also, we will be using a room where
our main actress will be filmed in.
The aim for this location is to create
a sense of depression.
8. There have been other renditions of Ainโt No
Sunshine and other interpretations of the video. A
recent video changed the tempo the video and
changed it from a sensitive love song to a up
tempo dance song the images then also changed
as so did the genre.
The performer uses his selling point which is
dancing to complement the song this changes the
audience to someone who enjoys soul music to
someone who prefers an up tempo feel good
track.

Ain't No Sunshine" is a song by Bill Withers from his 1971 album Just as I Am
The original video of aint no sunshine used a series of different shots including close ups
and long shots. This allowed the audience to feel a connection to the band and the main
performer. Close-ups are used for distinguishing main performer from the rest of the band,
also designed to focus attention on an actor's expression. A close-up of a person emphasizes
their emotional state this is meant to complement the genre, theme or message in the song/
lyrics. Whereas a mid-shot or wide-shot is more appropriate for delivering general
information, a close-up exaggerates facial expressions which convey emotion. The viewer is
drawn into the subject's personal space and shares their feelings.
The mid shots used are really to show off the rest the band, in the 1970s this was really the
selling point of the video images that really allowed the audience to feel the emotion that
the band was try to emote through facial expressions and body language
10. We are attempting to be
symbolic, using things
such as spot lights this
connotates a
performance taking
place but when the
lights go out the
performance ends, as
the lyrics clearly state
โaint no sunshine when
sheโs goneโ this is a
suggest the lyrics
without being so literal.
11. Our aim is to make our video visuals engaging
and aesthetically pleasing without being so
literal we want the visuals to suggest the lyrics
overall being ambiguous.
Our genre is soul and r&b we want to isolate
our performer putting her in strange places
where you would often feel claustrophobic for
instance a cellar, basement, in the corner of a
van, and/or under the table . With this we will
experiment with shots, there will be shots such
as extreme close up and close ups this will
allow her emotions to be heightened which
the audience will find allot more interesting
and engaging.
12. We will experiment with colour
and the choice of shots, without
completely confusing the
audience, we will suggest sunshine
through our choice of colour and
miss en scene. We will attempt to
engage the audience with visuals
that contrast the lyrics this will
suggest the feelings and emotions
that the performer will be feeling
that the song may not necessary
suggest.
13. We might experiment with the colour of
the video. We might have a collaboration
of black and white and colour this is
because black and white can exaggerate
an emotion a lot more than colour. The
focal point in the video would be the
performer if the video was in black and
white the most interesting thing would be
the performer this would also be
accomplished through shots and
framework.
