2. LANGUAGE
The music video begins with an animation effect in black and white. The animation movement
is edited to the beat of the music which is conventional to a music video. By using an animation
of moving lines as apposed to actual footage, it reflects how abstract the song is. Also, it makes
the video more interesting to look at as your eyes almost follow every movement the lines and
drawings make. There is a variety of cinematography used when the actual video footage begins
as there are pans and upward tilts to show the surroundings and every band member
performing the song. There is also animatic drawings used in place of the instrument which
again reflects how abstract the video is. There is also the use of fast paced editing to cut from
shot to shot which gives the video a ‘jagged’ feel as it doesn’t flow smoothly from shot to shot.
This goes with the beat of the music and portrays how edgy the song is in a sense. The colours
used in the music video stay black and white throughout which creates a steady theme
throughout and makes the white animation stand out even more. Whilst the band are
performing the song, there are white squiggly lines around the band. These could represent the
sound waves surrounding the band as they become engulfed in their performance and music, as
the indie genre is known to be fully involved in the production of their music and don’t follow
the mainstream idea of music videos.
3. Kasabian formed in Leicester in 1997. They are a rock band that are mostly
known in England. Their lead singer is Tom Meighan, and guitarist and singer
Sergio Pizzorno, as well as the other band members. They are signed to Sony,
RCA records and Columbia. In 2010 they won ‘Best Act In The World Today’ by
Q. Although Kasabian are typically known for not wanting to be perceived as
‘indie’, they are recognised as an indie rock band by many. There music has
varied throughout their 5 albums, as some has more of a rock sound and some
are more of an ‘indie’ sound. Their new album 48:13 has a new sound to it with
songs such as ‘bumbleebeee’ and ‘Eez-eh’. They are known for their specific
image especially on their latest tour for wearing black and white with a pink
background behind them. This represents how edgy the band are and how they
want to stand out.
INSTITUTION
4. Kasabian are quite an edgy rock band with specific styles and
sounds. This is made apparent in their music videos, especially in
‘Days are Forgotten’ as they used animation to create the
instruments. A typical feature in their music videos is performance
which shows how the band want to be perceived as different to the
mainstream pop artists. Drugs and alcohol are referred to in their
songs a lot which also explains why some of their videos appear to
be showing strange alter-realities almost and not true to life
experiences. By mentioning drugs and alcohol they are going against
what is seen to be acceptable and conforming to the expectations of
the rock genre.
IDEOLOGY
5. As Kasabian are a rock band, they appeal to a niche audience. However, in
todays society, rock and indie music is slowly becoming more popular, so in time,
the rock genre could appeal to more mass audiences due to its popularity
increasing. Audiences will enjoy watching Kasabian’s music video’s as it mainly
shows the band performing and they can imagine what it would be like to see
them live in concert as they have ‘audiences’ in the music video. The
stereotypical members of the audience would probably be people who are quite
individual or listen to the rock genre predominantly.

Kasabian
6. As mentioned in the language section of my analysis, I think that Kasabian want
to be perceived as a genuine band who are doing what they enjoy. This is
apparent by their down to earth music videos and also, they do not follow the
stereotypical mainstream pop culture which can sometimes be seen as fake. In
this video, the band use a simple black and white theme which shows how they
like to keep things simple and focus purely on the performance. However, they
add an abstract element to the video by adding the animation in. The video
focuses on the band performing and using the instruments made from animation,
which could represent how they interpret and mould the instruments they use to
adapt to their personal style and reflect their personality.
