The document discusses a soundscape project created in the style of Bill Fontana using environmental sounds and displaced sounds. A group of students traveled to Liverpool to record sounds related to the lives and careers of The Beatles. They recorded fans blowing to represent fans at concerts and sounds from a Beatles museum to educate themselves. The soundscape included the sound of an airplane representing John Lennon airport, which was named after him. It also included the sound of a submarine from the song "Yellow Submarine" which was pitch bent to stand out. In conclusion, the soundscape took the main stages of The Beatles' lives and careers while keeping the theme less obvious to allow listeners their own interpretations.
1. Soundscape Justification
For this unit we were all set a tack of producing a soundscape in the style of
Bill Fontana and his technique of using environmental sounds and
displacement of sounds. We all went to Liverpool to complete this task, we all
picked a theme and our idea was The Beatles and a timeline of their lives and
their careers. As it was meant to be in the style of Bill Fontana we wanted it to
be not obvious what the theme was because then the audience would create
a narrative for the soundscape and it wouldn’t be up to their own interpretation
so we changed the idea slightly and just have the most significant parts of
their lives. Wee chose The Beatles as they are a very iconic band and they
were from Liverpool.
We went round the city of Liverpool recording different sounds that we thought
were interesting and unusual but that could also be related to The Beatles is
such a way for example I came up with the idea of recording some fans/vents
blowing which could be interpreted as their fans at their concerts. We also
recorded sounds from a museum in Liverpool, which has a Beatles section
where you can go and watch a little video about their lives, which was good
for us because it educated us on them and their lives. We only chose abstract
parts of the video as we didn’t want the audience to be spoon-fed and we
wanted them to listen to it with an open mind of what they think it was instead
of giving them a chance to form a conventional narrative.
This is a section in the soundscape,
which was the sound effect of an
aeroplane, which was to represent
the John Lennon airport in
Liverpool, which was named after
him when he passed away.
We experimented with the
dynamics of the sound and gave it
more attack and moved the ratio to
4:0:1, I did this so that the sound
came in quickly to shock the
listeners and give an element of
excitement.
We also collected the sound
effect of a submarine as one of
their most famous songs was
called “Yellow Submarine”.
With this sound we pitch bent it
to make the beep of the
submarine higher so it stood
out to the listeners.
2. In conclusion our soundscape reached our expectations with our initial idea.
We took the main stages of The Beatles lives and careers to make up the
soundscape, we tried to make it less obvious on what the theme of the
soundscape was so that when the listeners were listening to it they would be
able to have their own interpretation on what it was all about so we used a lot
of everyday sounds for example walking up stairs and aeroplanes taking of
and changed them slightly to see if the sounds would still be recognised. I
think that overall the soundscape met the genre and followed the style of Bill
Fontana very well.
