1. LABORATORY SAFETY MEASURE
1. Always wear an apron before entering the laboratory
2. Clean your workbench before and after laboratory work with disinfecting solution. (with
phenol 1:100 or 90% alcohol)
3. Never smoke or eat or drink in the laboratory.
4. Never place pencil labels or any other materials in your mouth.
5. If live culture is spilled cover the area with disinfectant for 15 mins and then clean.
6. In the event of personal injuring such as cut or burn inform your instructor immediately
as bacteria entered open wounds.
7. Long hair should been tide back to minimize contamination of culture and fire hazards.
8. All cultures and prepared solution should be properly labeled or marked.
9. Before using any culture ensure that you are using the right culture.
10. If any culture has to be used see that further stock of culture is available for future work
before giving culture please check for purity.
11. Before discarding any culture, the organism must be killed. Never allow the organisms to
go out of the laboratory.
12. Do not allow the culture whether it petridish or in tubes or flasks left open. It remain
open, mites may pick up the colonies and spread whole laboratory.
13. Put off the burners when they are not in use.
14. Microbial cultures should be used carefully as they are potentially pathogens.
15. Wash your hands with soap before leaving laboratory.
16. Broth cultures should never be pipette out.
17. Label all plates, tubes, cultures, properly before starting an experiment.
18. Materials such as stain and reagent bottles, petridishes, and pipettes must be returned to
their original place after use.
19. Always clean microscopes before and after use. Clean lenses with lens paper.
20. Keep the laboratory doors and windows closed when the experiments are in progress.
21. Aseptic conditions should be strictly followed at all times.
22. Always keep culture tubes in upright position in a lack on basket.
23. It is advisable to wear gloves when working with chemical hazardous to eyes and skin.
24. Protect yourself from exposure of eyes and skin to UV light by wearing goggles and
clothing respectively.
