About the film Drama/Comedy. Real Life? Released 2007 Directed by Steph Green
Micro elements: Camera angle, movement and position Position- behind Joseph (over the shoulder shot), then camera turns to face him  Medium shots- at the beginning of the film to introduce Joseph to us, almost as if he is being revealed Close-ups- intimate shots, shows their facial expression so we can work out their emotions  Camera zooms on Joseph- as he begins to daydream Long shot- show us more of the locations Low angles- give characters appearance of more power
Depth of field Lots of narrow depth of fields- used to put the focus on certain characters Beginning of the film- when we first meet Joseph, only he is in focus
Framing  Mainly just characters in the frame, with background out of focus Facial expressions of other pupils can still be made out Just character’s face in frame- if its more emotional Rule of thirds has been followed
Editing and Special Effects Continuity editing Match on action Editing and sound used together- sound bridge on change of scenes from Irish school to African school Transitions-simple cuts Composition-mainly characters in the foreground
Mise-en-scene Film set 2 locations- Ireland and Africa Costume-used to show the difference in the two locations of the film and mean different things about the characters  Props-Irish school- books, pictures and drawing on the walls etc, school in Africa-basic furniture, chairs and tables and a blackboard, walls are bare, no books  Colour-different types of colours used in each location, to reflect Joseph’s feelings Lighting- contrasting lighting in each location to show the moods of the film
Sound Mainly diegetic sound Non diegetic sound- mood music Sound of school children laughing and chatting- one of the first indications to where the film is set Different music for when Joseph begins to daydream- repetitive, has a beat, hypnotic, dream like Silences-add tension
Script Important to help develop the narrative Dialogue-reflects how the children feel about Joseph Regional dialogue- all the children are from Ireland except for Joseph, so it singles him out
